A massive search is underway here in South Korea after one rescue worker was found dead and five remain missing when three boats overturned and were swept over a dam by surging floodwaters.
The capsize took place when two rescue boats tried to free a police boat stuck in wire by a dam near the city of Chuncheon, to the northeast of Seoul.
Arirang News' Kim Do-yeon leads our coverage tonight.
As the overturned boat floats down towards a dam... people are screaming that there are people onboard.
In Gangwon-do Province, three boats capsized Thursday morning, leaving at least one person dead and five missing.
Two others have been rescued as of 5 PM.
At around 11:30 AM, 500 meters upstream from Uiam Dam, a police boat started to sink after being caught on a wire while its crew were doing maintanence work on a man-made island.
People reported to be maintenance workers from the dam and another man... went to the rescue, taking two other boats, but all three boats ended up sinking.
One person was saved as the boats went down and another was rescued later, but one person's body was found 20 kilometers down river.
It's believed that they were swept away so fast because the nearby dam had been releasing water.
A search is underway, and as of 5 PM, it was reported that around 800 personnel had been sent with 7 helicopters.
But the search has been tough.
Rain has stopped in the area, but the discharge from the dam is causing the river to flow much faster than usual.
Plus, the rain has made the water murky.
In response, Prime Minister Chung Se-kyun ordered all efforts to be made to rescue the missing people, but he asked the rescue team to be safe as well.
