Need to compact soil in narrow trenches or around foundations? A Jumping Jack Compactor (also known as a rammer) is designed for deep, targeted compaction in tight or uneven areas. In this video, we’ll show you how to safely and effectively operate a Jumping Jack for solid, stable ground prep.

💡 Pro Tip: Let the machine do the work—keep a steady pace and avoid tipping. It’s ideal for cohesive soils like clay where plate compactors struggle.

⚠️ Safety Reminder: Wear ear and eye protection, use both hands when operating, and avoid inclines or unstable surfaces. Always check fuel levels and inspect before starting.

00:00Hello! Today we're going to have a look at a jumping jack. It's a form of tamper for tamping
00:16dirt mainly. Now some people use this machine when they're tamping substrate or stone or
00:25anything but it's the purpose of this machine unlike the plate tampers which are over here
00:31which we've shown in other videos which have a big flat plate on the bottom that's your that's
00:36your tamper for tamping stone. Once you get into soil say digging around your foundation around
00:44the house or you got a trench or a ditch then you're back filling it with dirt you would put
00:50in some dirt and then you would use this to tamp the dirt down and pack it down tight and the reason
00:56is because this this jumping jack as the name implies jumps when it's on is making a much higher
01:04vibration and then you're it's able to walk along and jump on top of the soil whereas and if the soil
01:10softer this will actually move whereas your plate tampers have a very low vibration height and that's
01:18why they need a hard aggregate to be on top of like stone whereas this will do the dirt now they come
01:24in different widths this is about a 10 inch width pad on the bottom some will come with a 6 inch you're
01:32kind of restricted as far as how deep down in trench you can go by your bellows in the bottom portion of
01:38your of your jumping jack but you start this machine you start increasing the speed just like you do any
01:45tamper and that's we'll see as a very high jumping path and two people can hold it one on each end
01:53because sometimes it does get a little violent especially you're on dirt that's not very level
01:58or anything or you got some stone or something there and sometimes it'll be side to side so one
02:03person can get on either side and you can control it as you go along tamping your soil and the same thing
02:09with any compaction your compaction is a factor of your moisture and your hitting force so this can
02:17have a very hard hitting force they come in different sizes and do it in levels so much dirt tamp it down
02:24again so much dirt tamp it down and you'll get a a nice hard compaction you get much less by caving in
02:31like you might say after you've put your your trench down say a trench down down your lawn or something for
02:37a gas line or water line or maybe some drainage putting some weeping tile around your yard you
02:43can use it for that then you can tamp it down put your sod back on and it won't sink and you'll have
02:49a perfect job when you're done so that's it for that one and we'll see you in the next video
