00:00Today we're going to talk about a lawn thatcher. Some people call it a lawn
00:14comber, but the reason for the machine is to draw and comb out the dead grass out
00:20of your lawn so that the moisture can get in, the fertilizer can get down to
00:24the roots and the nutrients can get down and make the grass grow. A lot of the
00:30lawns after not using a mulching blade, which is common on lawnmowers, leaves the
00:35dead grass on your lawn and because it costs to get rid of grass now for the
00:40except for taking it to the dump, this builds up into your lawn and sometimes
00:45mats very hard into your lawn and doesn't let the moisture get through or the
00:49fertilizer get down to the roots. This machine will help you resolve that
00:53problem. Now you can do it with a rake by hand, but this is the motorized version
00:59of combing or thatching, dethatching your lawn and combing out the dead grass. Now
01:04the blades on this machine, I'll show you, are a little thicker than something you'd
01:09use in an overseeder, which we'll show you at another time, but the blades are a
01:13little wider. They're very loose. You'll see they can just rotate on the shaft and
01:18the reason is so that they'll comb and if they hit grass it's too hard, it won't, it
01:24won't ruin anything, it'll bypass, but it being thicker it'll comb out more grass out
01:28of the, out of the lawn. The way to use it is not much different than using your
01:34lawnmower. All you're gonna do is walk along with it, start the engine, walk along
01:43with the thatcher. See if you're pulling out any grass, dead grass, out of the
01:48lawn. Now if you're not, the machine is adjustable. That's what this lever is up
01:53on the top here. And what you do is push it aside and you'll see the front of the
01:59unit going down, getting closer to the soil. What you want to do is adjust it so
02:06that the grip, the blades just touch the top of the soil. Not to the point that it's
02:11too deep that you pull yourself along with the machine, then you're going too
02:15deep. Now what you want, don't want to do is get on your lawn too early in the
02:20spring when it's just mud. Or you're gonna, the roots are very tender, your grass, you
02:25want to wait till it dries out a bit so that when you do pull out the thatch out of
02:29the lawn, it's very easy to rake up and dispose of. So adjust it where you want to
02:35have it. Don't get on it too early. Don't have the blade down too deep so that
02:40you're scarring the soil and the machine's pulling you along. You want to
02:44just be, do have it so that you're just combing and you're just walking along
02:48very easily with the machine and going back and forth over your lawn. Sometimes
02:53you can go 90 degrees to your previous path as well to dig out more thatch, but
02:58don't get too aggressive. Take your time and this will do a perfect job and dig out
03:03that dead grass for you.
