Need to remove concrete coatings, level uneven surfaces, or create a textured finish for better adhesion? A scarifier—also known as a surface planer—is the heavy-duty tool designed for serious surface prep. In this video, we’ll show you exactly how to use a scarifier safely and effectively.

💡 Pro Tip: Always start with a shallow cut—gradually increase depth to avoid gouging and maintain better control.

00:00Hi there it's Larry and today we're going to have a look at a scarifier. These machines are
00:16what's used outdoors normally to grind down sidewalks, high spots on concrete pads, say
00:22the doors can't get open in a commercial operation and you got to grind down the the pad from over
00:29the winter the concrete shifted or lifted and so as you can open the door again very common around
00:35a schoolyard and school buildings where the concrete pads have lifted at the doors and this
00:42is a different motion than using for grinders this is what's called a scarifier it uses teeth
00:48it's much more aggressive if you want to take off quarter half inch of concrete this is the
00:54kind of equipment you would use as opposed to a grinder it'll be much quicker although the
01:00surface that's left on the scarifier is like taking your fingers and dragging them very lightly
01:05through the sand it leaves a little cut edge which you could use a grinder afterwards and smooth it
01:10all out and make it smooth once you got the bulk of the concrete off and sometimes that surface is
01:16not a problem it's similar to a broom finish on a concrete driveway after they poured the concrete
01:22so what you want to do is give you an idea what the teeth look like on a scarifier much different
01:31than a grinder you can see they're loose teeth these spin around and they actually flick at the concrete
01:38and chip it off also you have the wheels that it rides on and you want to make sure they're clean so
01:44that you're going to have a clean grind as you're doing it scarifying it now machines fairly heavy so
01:55it holds itself firmly onto the surface and the way to use this machine is you make sure that the wheels
02:03in the middle are there solid you make sure you're pushing down on the handle and the back wheels are solid
02:08this is not a machine that you tip up and try to grind with or put up and drag you hold the
02:15machine down solid it has a lead a spin lever here that as you turn this you're dirt you're putting
02:24the you'll see the surf front of the machine going down where the cutters are and that's how you take off
02:31more or less of the concrete you keep one hand here on the handle pushing down on these back wheels to
02:38keep it solid and your other hand will be here moving this wheel up and down as you're pushing it
02:44and grinding all concrete is not perfectly flat it has some dips and valleys so this is why the lever
02:52is here to give you that control to go along the concrete and back off or grind to get the surface smooth
03:00again they're back down to the where you want it and that way you can take more or less off as well
03:05so don't take this machine and try to hold it there and try put it up and drag it because you're
03:13getting tired and you want to have be more aggressive you can either break the cutters off or break a shaft
03:19and if the wheel isn't turning and flicking and breaking the concrete off it's not doing its job use the
03:27machine for what it's intended and how it's intended to be used it'll be more effective so that's one
03:32don't do keep the wheels down always on the surface on the back and the other hand dialing of course if
03:39you're on the other hand you'll be dialing and turning with your left hand there is a good exhaust
03:44port on the back of these as well that you can hook something up but normally this machine with its gas
03:49engine would be used outdoors and not something you'd use in your basement or try to use it in an
03:57indoor of a factory or somewhere there are special mufflers you can put on them to suppress the exhaust
04:03but it is more of an outdoor thing like you've seen around sidewalks and everything talk to you soon
