UN chief urges AI companies to focus on renewable energy

The head of the United Nations calls on the surging artificial intelligence sector to prioritize sustainable energy for running power-hungry data centers. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says a typical AI data center — sites where data is processed — uses the same amount of electricity as 100,000 regular homes. "This is not sustainable," Guterres says. "The technology sector must be out front. Today I call on every major tech firm to power all data centers with 100 percent renewables by 2030," he adds.

00:00Governments must aim to meet all new electricity demands with renewables.
00:05AI can boost efficiency, innovation and resilience in energy systems.
00:11And we must take profit of it.
00:13But it is also energy hungry.
00:16A typical artificial intelligence data center eats up as much electricity as 100,000 homes.
00:24And the largest ones will soon use 20 times that.
00:28By 2030, data centers could consume as much electricity as all of Japan does today.
00:37This is not sustainable unless we make it so.
00:42And the technology sector must be out front.
00:45Today, I call on every major tech firm to power all data centers with 100% renewables by 2030.
00:53For every dollar invested in renewable power, just 60 cents go to grids and storage.
01:01And the ratio should be one to one.
01:03We are building renewable power, but not connecting it fast enough.
01:09The energy transition is unstoppable.
01:13But transition is not yet fast enough or fair enough.
01:18OECD countries and China account for 80% of renewable power capacity installed worldwide.
01:25Brazil and India make up nearly 10%, Africa just 1.5%.
01:32All that president can improve.
01:36And now I'm talking about data Jakarta.
01:38But here, I'm glad to see you guys.
