00:00So let's get started here as we begin the show, and truly an incredible performance once again at Royal Portrush.
00:07I mean, Scotty Scheffler is just the golfer that cannot be stopped at this point, wins another major championship,
00:14and this time takes home the British Open and the Claret Jug, as you can see there.
00:18It wasn't exactly wire to wire because there were some other golfers in contention on day one and day two,
00:25but Scheffler essentially dominated the field on Saturday, dominated the field again on Sunday,
00:31and is pulling off major wins like nobody else may be in the history of golf.
00:36I mean, that really is like Tiger Woods.
00:39Days in between Woods' first and fourth major championship, 1,197, and basically the same thing for Scotty Scheffler, by the way.
00:47First and fourth major win, 1,197.
00:50He's been dominant.
00:51He's been great, although he did have one issue on the golf course on Sunday,
00:55and actually mentioned that in his post-round championship media availability.
01:01Yeah, it's a very special feeling.
01:04It takes a lot of work to get to this point in my career, and this was a tough week.
01:08It was challenging.
01:09The golf course was playing really tough, and, you know, I had to focus very hard over the course of the weekend,
01:13and, you know, really the only blemish over the last 36 holes was the double on eight,
01:17but did a good job of kind of resetting and coming back with a birdie on nine,
01:20and, you know, I guess this one was different than the PGA in terms of, you know,
01:25I had a decent lead to start the day, but PGA I felt like I struggled a bit on the front nine
01:29and then was able to kind of push forward and win it on the back nine,
01:34whereas this one I felt like I built up a lead.
01:36It got a little close there after the double on eight, but, like I said, bounced back on nine
01:40and was able to keep a pretty sizable lead for most of the day.
01:44Big news in the National Football League off the field.
01:46Players Association President and Chief Strategy Officer J.C. Tretter announced that he's stepping down from the union,
01:53also removing himself from consideration to be interim executive director,
01:58saying that the toll on his family became too great and doesn't have anything left to give in the organization.
02:03Certainly the NFLPA has had their issues, league grievances, Howell's reimbursements for some reported strip club outings
02:12as mistruths cast against him, some internal backlash.
02:16Tretter leaves the NFLPA for good.
02:20Meanwhile, New York City pawn shop owner Dmitry Nazinski has pleaded guilty to conspiring to receive stolen property,
02:27including luxury watches, jewelry, and handbags from high-profile burglaries.
02:32You may have heard this happening all across the country, players playing in their games on the road
02:37and having their homes breaking into.
02:39One of them is Joe Burrow, whose home was ransacked on December 9, 2024, while he played in Dallas.
02:46He and a co-conspirator at this point are in some huge heat for selling a lot of the memorabilia,
02:53including some homes of athletes like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelsey, Luka Doncic, Mike Conley Jr. among them.
03:01In Major League Baseball yesterday, the best pitcher in the game just keeps on shoving.
03:05That is Tariq Skubal of the Detroit Tigers.
03:07Six and two-thirds yesterday, 11 strikeouts.
03:10The Tigers beat the Texas Rangers by a final of 2-1.
03:15Also, the Blue Jays have won their 10th straight home game as they defeat the Giants by a final score of 8-6.
03:21Toronto and New York battling toe-to-toe.
03:24Red Sox are in the mix for the East as well.
03:26Speaking of those Yankees, how about Aaron Judge yesterday going deep?
03:3036th home run of the season as the Yankees beat the Braves by a final of 4-2.
03:35The series did not get off to the start the Yankees wanted, but as Aaron Judge said,
03:38it doesn't matter how you start, manage how you finish.
03:41You know, that's what it's all about.
03:42You know, you want to win every game, but, you know, we didn't come out the way we wanted to the first night
03:45and kind of started a little slow the second night.
03:49But, you know, the team warmed up, got ready to go, and just a lot of gritty at-bats,
03:53a lot of gritty performances from our pitchers, you know, some big spots when we needed them.
03:57And, you know, a big series win, and, you know, especially going into Toronto,
04:00who's leading the division, you know, it's a good time to start getting hot.
04:04What was he going to see in Harkis throw the way he did today?
04:07Impressive.
04:08Just the way he's going to be able to command both sides of the plate.
04:10You know, I felt like he was really working the inside corner wall to lefties,
04:13which, you know, you go up and down that lineup, man.
04:15They've got some guys that can, you know, hit for power, hit for average, you know, make things happen.
04:19So, it's a tricky lineup to navigate, and he was on today, man.
04:25That was fun to watch.
04:27And also, the Houston Astros salvaged game three in Seattle,
04:31beating the Mariners by a final of 11-3.
04:34The hottest team in Major League Baseball right now, unequivocally, the Milwaukee Brewers.
04:39They go to Los Angeles and sweep.
04:40They've now won 10 straight games.
04:43The Brewers chasing down the Cubs in the National League Central for first place.
04:49Despite the heroics of Shohei Otani this weekend, the Brewers were just better.
04:53Meanwhile, Freddie Freeman exited a game yesterday after being hit in the wrist.
05:00But the good news, Dave Roberts said afterward, is that it looks like nothing is broken.
05:05X-rays were negative.
05:06So, obviously, when you see him walk off the field like that, very concerning.
05:12But the X-rays were negative, so that's a positive.
05:15I think just putting him in the day-to-day category is probably where we're at right now.
05:20I understand that, of course, the losing is frustrating and starting to build on each other.
05:24But when you have an injury scare like that, does it just feel like one thing after another right now?
05:29That one, I held my breath.
05:30I think we all did because, you know, when you're scuffling and to potentially lose a guy for four to six weeks
05:38is obviously very scary.
05:40But, you know, exhaled a sigh of relief after hearing that it was negative.
05:45And, yeah, to lose him longer would have been really tough to overcome.
05:51But so we dodged a bullet there.
05:53And I don't know how he's going to come out of today.
05:55But see how he comes in tomorrow.
05:57But if not, then we'll have rushing at first base.
06:00A quiet, successful season for Juan Soto continued on Sunday.
06:05He scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
06:07And the Mets end up beating the Cincinnati Reds by a final of 3-2.
06:12Soto talked about the game-winning run and what went into the outcome.
06:16What is the key in that spot to successfully completing that on a hard-hit ground ball there?
06:25For me, first of all, you've got to get the momentum going.
06:28I was going in contact, so I was trying to make sure I'm ready to, whenever he hit the ball, I'm just going.
06:36When you get that momentum, you know, Mendy was talking a little bit about the types of leads and the secondary lead.
06:41What is the process like for you to make sure that you get that momentum at the right time?
06:46I mean, you just keep your feet moving.
06:49Keep your feet moving.
06:50Be focusing on the contact, on the swing.
06:53Make sure whenever the swing is coming, your foot is landing and be ready to go.
06:57That's all you got.
06:59And then after that, just put your head down and try to score.
07:02In the American League West, the Angels continue to hang around .500.
07:06Maybe they'll stay in this thing from start to finish.
07:08Taylor Ward, four RBIs.
07:10The Angels beat the Phillies 8-2.
07:11A very rare scuffle from pitcher Ranger Suarez, who gave up six earned runs.
07:17Rob Thompson, manager of the Phillies, said his off-speed stuff wasn't good enough.
07:22Yeah.
07:23Or stuff.
07:24Couldn't find his changeup either.
07:25So, not a whole lot of swing and mess, which is unusual for him.
07:31But, yeah, basically it was his command.
07:34You've been asked about it a lot, but the velocity was down again.
07:36Is that of any concern?
07:38I mean, if it was down, it was down a tick.
07:41And I don't have concern if he's got his command because he can pitch.
07:44He just didn't have his command today.
07:46What did you take on that pitch at Toronto in a second?
07:50You know, looking at it now, it looks like it was a strike.
07:53I think a year from now, if that move comes in here, somebody's stopping to hang on with it?
07:58Probably.
08:02Rob, I know he didn't do much, but did the rain delay possibly affect him?
08:06I don't think so.
08:09No, I don't think so because he was just playing catch when it happened.
08:13Then he went and sat down and waited for the rain to stop and then got going again.
08:17Certainly didn't help Soriano or didn't hurt Soriano.
08:20What would a Monday be without Pat Evans from Legal Sports Report to dive into the latest sports wagering stories from the weekend
08:27and give us a preview of all of the information that you can read over at LegalSportsReport.com.
08:32Let's bring in Pat.
08:33Pat, great to have you back here on this edition of Newswire.
08:36Pat's favorite day of the week is Monday.
08:39Who doesn't love Monday, Craig?
08:41Who doesn't love a good Monday?
08:43All right, so sports bettors in Missouri are going to have the NFL preseason come and go and then the regular season and college football come and go.
08:55They're going to have to wait until December, but it does appear that any small fighting or I should say probably like infighting in the state to try and push things back or stop it.
09:05It feels like December 1st, the first bets will be placed in Missouri.
09:11I think that's a safe bet at this point, Craig.
09:14I mean, last week was a big week for the process to get to that legally defined day that it has to start by, which is December 1st.
09:22And that's when the Missouri Gaming Commission has said it will start.
09:25They've decided that they're going to take all the time it can to take to launch, which, you know, in a lot of other states we've seen, you know, expedite that and launch quicker.
09:36But here we are.
09:37But last week, again, was a huge step in the right direction.
09:40You had a couple of deadlines.
09:41You had the tethered or the untethered license applications that were due.
09:46I mentioned last week that we had DraftKings and FanDuel apply to those.
09:51Now, what actually happened, too, was later the Missouri Gaming Commission confirmed that Circa Sports also had turned in an application post-dated or post-marked for that July 15th date.
10:04So Circa is also in the running for one of those two untethered licenses.
10:08That, of course, means you don't have to partner with one of the state's casinos or sports teams and share revenue and the like.
10:15So you're looking at more money, ultimately, than if you were just a partner like that.
10:20So those two licenses will be issued probably August 15th is the date they've said they'll announce it.
10:28There's a hearing that those three operators will be able to go in front of the commission and discuss at that point.
10:33Also, last week in Missouri, written public comments for the rules were due.
10:39And that's interesting because, you know, back in February, Secretary of State Denny Hoskins, who had played the role of, you know, an opponent, a major opponent, killing it basically three years in a row in the legislature.
10:51He said, no, you can't have emergency rules, which would have allowed them to get it up and running probably this summer before the sports or the football season.
10:58So, you know, that's kind of a neat focus is now we're through that because then on Thursday there was a hearing that would have allowed the people who, you know, commented, submitted written comments to, you know, stand in front of the commission, explain themselves, maybe answer questions if they needed.
11:14And not one comment as they read line by line through all the rules was made.
11:20So, you know, it does look like, sure, there were probably quite a few written comments, which we'll know probably in the next couple of days.
11:27They probably weren't major enough that made, you know, all these operators stand up and say, hey, you know, this really needs to be changed.
11:34We or else, you know, it's going to be a big problem.
11:36So we're through that hurdle.
11:37Those rules go into effect August 30th.
11:40More, if an operator is tethered to a casino or sports team and wants to launch by that December 1 date, they have to get those in the applications in by September 12th.
11:49So all of these dates are quickly coming up and passing by.
11:53So, gosh, you know, for as long as I've been coming on this show, Craig, we've been talking about Missouri and when they're going to legalize sports betting.
12:00You know, back when I first started coming on, we were talking about who's going to legalize first, Kansas or Missouri.
12:06Well, Kansas got it done, what, three years ago, four years ago, almost now.
12:09So it's been a while for people in Missouri and here we finally are, right, knocking on the door for them to have sports betting.
12:17You know, they must be pretty excited.
12:19They should be a few months away and prime time in the National Football League and in college football as well.
12:25OK, so listen, we're probably going to go the whole year without legalizing any other state, but at least we have some updates when some things move in different directions.
12:33And another one to explore today is Oklahoma.
12:36I know that the tribes will be very heavily involved in some of these states in the Midwest and out West as well.
12:42If it does end up happening, what's the latest there?
12:46Yeah, so the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association is having one of their annual shows and they're talking about things.
12:52And, of course, sports betting is a big deal when it comes to the gaming community.
12:55And, I mean, the tribes in Oklahoma have gaming exclusivity.
13:00They have a say in what sports betting is going to look like.
13:04Now, if you've been listening to me when I come on the show, we talk a lot about Oklahoma, especially this year.
13:09The tribes do want it, but, of course, they want exclusivity, which is not a surprise as they do have gaming exclusivity.
13:16Governor Kevin Stitt, on the other hand, back in 2020 when he first took office or right after he first took office, said,
13:22You know what? I want to legalize sports betting. I'm going to do it through two compacts, and then we're going to see if we can open up the commercial market.
13:29Those amended compacts were later deemed illegal, and we've now been in kind of a stagnated stalemate between the tribes and Stitt,
13:38so much so that Stitt's own Republican Party have long gone kind of against him, said, you know,
13:43at one point maybe we'll even take over the negotiations and, you know, kick him completely out of the tribal relations situation.
13:52It doesn't matter. This year we got, you know, a couple bills that were introduced, largely supported by the Oklahoma Indian Gaming Association.
14:00Those got as far as they'd ever gotten, just short of a Senate vote out of the House.
14:04So, you know, it's probably 75% of the way there.
14:08Even so, Stitt said, you know what? If any of these bills get through, I'm going to veto them.
14:13Well, they didn't end up getting through, so it was not that big of a deal.
14:16One of them even would have kind of circumvented him and gone to the ballot instead, but it doesn't matter.
14:22Back to the Indian Gaming shows I mentioned, you know, they've been big discussions,
14:28and they're kind of putting the target to 2026 or 2027 when Stitt is voted out.
14:35You know, there was a recent local article that had, you know, comments from two different gubernatorial candidates for 2026,
14:41saying this is important. We need to give our tribes more leverage.
14:45We need to give them more assets to thrive and kind of looking towards, you know, okay,
14:51whoever is governor next understands the tribes want this, understand that's how it's going to get done,
14:56understand the Oklahomans probably want sports betting because most of the rest of the country has it.
15:01And so here we are at a spot where, you know, pretty much everybody except for Kevin Stitt,
15:06and even Kevin Stitt, the governor, has said, you know, I want it.
15:09I just want commercial entities involved. So, again, push-pull, but at this point,
15:13I think with him in office, it's not going to get done.
15:16We're going to have to wait until whoever is the new governor in Oklahoma comes in,
15:21and then you'll very likely, very quickly see sports betting in Oklahoma.
15:25Yeah, and not that far away either, so within reason.
15:29Okay, so let's get to California here, a state to watch to see if they just hang on to any kind of fun gaming,
15:34you know, like Sweepstakes gone and Daily Fantasy gone.
15:38It's a couple years ago, we're sitting here in the summer of July,
15:42all kinds of ads to legalize sports betting, which was the pinnacle of getting closer,
15:46and then everything has gone the other way since.
15:49Yeah, it's a really interesting kind of dichotomy there.
15:51You've got the tribes who want to control just like Oklahoma,
15:54and they've done a great job of keeping that monopoly there.
15:58And now this year, you're seeing a lot more.
16:00They do want eventually sports betting,
16:01but they want to control it mostly for the future of online casino.
16:05But and now you're seeing them crack down and push the government to say,
16:09hey, DFS needs to be like kind of cracked down.
16:12You've seen the attorney general come out and say, nope, those aren't legal.
16:14And now you've seen a lot of those operators go peer to peer.
16:18And here you have the DFS or the online sweepstakes prohibition bill that has now been introduced.
16:24It's passed two committees.
16:25Initially, it included something that the word person,
16:29which would have meant, you know, celebrities who endorse them,
16:32like Ryan Seacrest or even potentially players.
16:36Well, in a recent amendment that has passed into that bill,
16:41it eliminates person.
16:42So you're looking to say, hey, OK, the celebrity endorsers are probably OK.
16:47Players are protected.
16:48This is meant to go after companies largely offshore
16:51that are taking and going through loopholes to offer,
16:55you know, gambling for more or less or lack of a better term.
16:59And yeah, so here you are.
17:01You've already seen some suppliers who are legal operators or legal suppliers
17:05and do supply legal operators say, hey, wait,
17:08you can't offer these games and do things like that.
17:10So already without it even passing,
17:12you're seeing it kind of work in some of the ways it's meant to.
17:16Yeah, well, Pat, great stuff as always.
17:20Enjoy your week.
17:20I'm sure we'll catch up again soon.
17:22Thanks for coming on Newswire.
17:23Thanks as always, Craig.
17:25Thanks.
17:42Bye.
