Let's get a preview of this show today.
00:01
I didn't think we'd be starting off with this story,
00:03
but it seems to continue to have some legs
00:05
in the world of sports and sports betting.
00:07
There is a gambling ring that's currently
00:09
under federal investigation for its role
00:11
in two NBA betting cases.
00:12
It was now also revealed it has been involved
00:16
in that unusual wagering activity
00:18
on three men's college basketball games this season.
00:21
So are they correlated?
00:22
It does appear so.
00:23
Sportsbook accounts connected to the gambling ring
00:25
bet against North Carolina A&T,
00:28
Mississippi Valley State, and Eastern Michigan
00:30
in games this season.
00:31
Some of those same accounts also placed large wagers
00:35
back on those John Tay Porter props.
00:38
Remember him from the Toronto Raptors?
00:40
So the NCAA has released a statement surrounding this
00:43
saying they take sports betting very seriously
00:46
and is fully committed to the protection
00:48
of student athlete wellbeing and the integrity
00:50
of competition due to confidentiality rules
00:52
put in place by the NCAA's member schools.
00:54
The NCAA will not comment on current
00:56
or potential investigations.
00:58
So we'll see if indeed these are all correlated
01:01
and what comes from that, we will find out.
01:03
Meanwhile, last year, you may remember there was a story
01:06
about an umpire in Major League Baseball
01:09
that was asked to take a leave of absence
01:10
over some sports betting impropriety.
01:12
Apparently Pat Hoberg was not betting on baseball.
01:17
It was not his account,
01:19
but someone was actually using his account.
01:22
I spoke wrong there.
01:23
Someone was using his sports betting account
01:25
in order to place wagers, but it was not himself.
01:28
Needless to say, he did obstruct the investigation
01:31
Major League Baseball announced
01:33
by deleting some old texts and Hoberg was fired.
01:36
So no longer an umpire, one of the better ones,
01:37
by the way, in Major League Baseball, which is a shame.
01:39
Some breaking news in college basketball today,
01:41
not related to sports betting.
01:43
I'm happy to say Leonard Hamilton,
01:44
longtime head coach of Florida State University
01:47
is stepping down.
01:48
He's being sued by six former players
01:51
from the 23-24 team based on NIL promises
01:55
that were allegedly not kept.
01:56
$250,000 in NIL compensations.
02:00
The plaintiffs are Darren Green, Deontay Green,
02:03
Cameron Fletcher, Josh Nickelberry,
02:05
Primo Spears, and Jalen Warry.
02:07
This was filed in Leon County.
02:09
And needless to say, Hamilton had 456 wins in 22 seasons.
02:16
He's the winningest coach in FSU history
02:18
and also led Miami to a lot of success
02:20
when he was the head coach there as well.
02:22
We'll see if he ends up coaching again.
02:24
Meanwhile, looks like Cooper Cup indeed
02:26
is gonna be searching for a new home.
02:27
He posted on social media that he expects to be traded.
02:30
The Rams have informed him of such.
02:32
He doesn't know where he's going to end up.
02:34
It was a tough year for Cooper Cup
02:35
coming back off multiple injuries
02:37
where Puka Nakua certainly outshined him
02:40
and wasn't really a big part of the Rams' game plan,
02:42
let's be honest, toward the end of the season.
02:44
The Washington Commanders are going to be keeping their name,
02:48
at least for the time being, the owner of the Commanders,
02:51
Josh Harris, making the announcement yesterday
02:53
at the end of season press conference,
02:55
saying, I think it's been embraced by our team,
02:57
our culture, and our coaching staff.
02:59
Here is more on Harris deciding to keep the name Commanders.
03:03
So right now, and now in this building,
03:07
the name Commanders means something.
03:10
It means that, you know, it's about players who,
03:16
you know, love football, are great at football,
03:20
hit hard, mentally tough, great teammates.
03:24
And so it's really meaningful
03:26
that that name is growing in meaning.
03:28
And so, but as far as rebranding and bringing our past,
03:33
you know, which obviously I grew up with
03:35
and all the Super Bowl championships
03:37
and our future together,
03:39
you're going to see us head back towards, you know,
03:42
honoring our past and bringing it together with our future.
03:46
Houston Texans have found their new offensive coordinator.
03:48
Nick Kaley will be the new signal caller
03:51
for the Houston Texans.
03:53
They of course fired their offensive coordinator,
03:55
so he takes over.
03:56
He's never been an OC, 42 years old.
03:58
Meanwhile, University of Washington,
03:59
Brendan Carroll, a coach there.
04:01
Carroll, the last name, no surprise,
04:04
as what team he joins in the NFL?
04:06
With his dad, the Las Vegas Raiders.
04:08
He will be offensive line coach.
04:10
Chip Kelly is there as well.
04:11
All right, let's get to the NBA.
04:12
Whoa, what's going on with the Orlando Magic?
04:14
They are one and nine in their past 10
04:15
after a fantastic season.
04:17
They seem to be fading a little bit.
04:18
Andrew Wiggins had 25 points.
04:20
Steph Curry had 24.
04:22
The Warriors came all the way back
04:23
to beat the Magic 104 to 99.
04:25
All about halftime adjustments
04:27
in order to head coach Steve Kerr.
04:28
I thought we woke up, you know,
04:30
we were asleep in the first half.
04:32
And we had some possessions that made no sense.
04:36
And, you know, the guys locked in at halftime,
04:41
scored I think the first six or eight points.
04:43
Quentin was fantastic.
04:45
Those first few minutes of the third quarter
04:47
set a really good tone and that got us the lead.
04:51
And then, of course, they battled back
04:53
in the fourth, did a great job,
04:54
but we were able to hang on.
04:56
Was anything specific that was addressed
04:58
at halftime that you can share?
05:01
Just brilliant coaching, mainly, you know.
05:03
Key adjustments, I don't really remember
05:05
what those adjustments were, but I know they were key.
05:08
And I made them, so it was mainly about me.
05:13
Very funny there from Steve Kerr.
05:15
All right, you know who else is having fun?
05:17
The Portland Trailblazers.
05:18
Wow, are they on fire?
05:19
Eight and one in their last nine games.
05:22
They win again last night, 121 to 119.
05:23
Former son De'Andre Ayton with a huge game,
05:25
25 points and 20 rebounds.
05:28
Although in the loss by the Phoenix Suns,
05:30
Devin Booker talked about becoming
05:32
the Suns' all-time leading scorer.
05:35
Mina means everything.
05:38
You know, me and you have talked about it for some time.
05:41
You know, just being drafted to the franchise,
05:46
them believing me, taking a chance on me
05:48
as a 18-year-old kid and, you know,
05:51
going through a rebuild phase and just sticking with it.
05:56
You know, keeping my head down,
05:58
the love and the support's all the way been there.
06:01
And, you know, I don't take it for granted.
06:03
You know, I take it seriously,
06:06
putting Phoenix across my chest.
06:08
Yeah.
06:08
Yeah, it is quite a surprise to see the career
06:11
that Booker has had, outscoring all the great members
06:13
of the Phoenix Suns.
06:14
Meanwhile, guess who's outscoring everyone again?
06:16
No surprise for the Knicks is Jalen Brunson.
06:19
He had a 42-spot last night, also 10 assists.
06:21
The Knicks beat the Rockets.
06:23
Final score, 124 to 118.
06:25
Brunson, fantastic again.
06:26
17 points in the fourth quarter.
06:29
They trailed by 11.
06:30
He brings them all the way back.
06:31
And, of course, Ibe Udoka, the head coach of the Rockets,
06:34
was not pleased with the defensive effort.
06:37
I don't think it was rim protection.
06:38
I think it was one-on-one defense.
06:42
They had a 46-point quarter.
06:44
You know, we scored 29, we scored 118.
06:47
We scored enough points to win.
06:48
But, very soft and uncompetitive defensively,
06:53
just going at us one-on-one.
06:54
And we're complaining about offensive fouls,
06:56
not boxing out, not doing our assignment,
07:00
getting back cut, off-ball actions.
07:03
That adds up to 46.
07:04
And so, scored enough to win.
07:07
It seemed like you were trying to make some substitutions
07:09
and find somebody who could guard.
07:11
Did you see anything that you thought was working well?
07:15
I mean, a few guys, but not enough.
07:17
Even our supposed defenders got cooked tonight.
07:24
Let's go to the big upset in college basketball.
07:26
Last night, two teams ranked in the top 25,
07:29
but the lower team ranked gets the win.
07:31
Kansas defeats Iowa State 69-52.
07:35
Incredible defense last night from the Jayhawks.
07:38
Zeke Mayo had 17.
07:39
Hunter Dickinson had 14 as well.
07:42
It's certainly a 52-point outcome
07:45
for the defense of the Jayhawks,
07:47
is what Bill Self was talking about
07:49
after last night's game.
07:50
Yeah, I thought the first shot defense
07:52
was pretty good first half.
07:55
And we didn't rebound the ball like I thought we could've.
07:59
We really guarded them.
08:00
And we got them into the last 10 seconds of the shot clock,
08:03
I think, 10 out of the 30 possessions the first half.
08:06
So, that was good.
08:07
We did a good job and did a great job
08:13
on their victory, especially.
08:16
But yeah, guys, this storyline,
08:19
you guys can do whatever you want to the storyline.
08:22
You could say defense or whatever.
08:23
The storyline to me on tonight
08:25
is how the guys responded after a really crappy last 48 hours.
08:29
So, really proud of them.
