00:00so let's get right to it here we're actually going to start off today with a big trade in
00:03the national basketball association this involves the los angeles clippers the miami heat
00:07and the utah jazz so a three-team trade not quite as big as the kevin durant trade but still three
00:13teams involved seems to me more for the miami heat which basically has them in a position to acquire
00:20norman powell who scored 22 points per game last season really good three-point shooter the heat
00:25looking to replace jimmy butler so the clippers jazz and heat are involved in the deal powell go to
00:31miami john collins to la kevin love kyle anderson and a 2027 clippers second round pick go to the
00:38utah jazz so that indeed is the trade miami looking to get better this offseason they've done virtually
00:44nothing to do so so this will be the first step toward that meanwhile the washington nationals
00:50shockingly one week before the first year major league baseball player draft where they have the
00:56number one overall pick end up firing their general manager and their manager mike rizzo is out and so is
01:03davy martinez right now the nationals are looking for someone to lead the front office and today they'll
01:10announce who their new manager is going to be of course martinez led the nationals to their first and
01:15only world series championship in 2019 and they won the nl east four times so a bit of a surprise
01:21although the nationals have really been dismal this season as they look to take their next step out of
01:27a rebuild which really did not happen here in 2025 also in case you missed it over the weekend pitcher
01:33luis ortiz is under investigation for sports wagering there were some egregious bets being placed on
01:40different pitches that he threw according to some safeguard websites and right now he's currently
01:45under investigation by meaning investigation no nothing guilty right now just basically there
01:51were a couple of pitches that ortiz threw way outside the zone it was very obvious for cleveland but
01:55correlating that to actual sports betting kind of impossible we have to wait for this
01:59investigation to come to fruition the padres had a bullpen game yesterday they beat the texas rangers
02:05four to one they win two out of three in the series this weekend in fact they used six
02:10pitchers to end up getting it done mike schilt after the game certainly likes the way the padres
02:16got the job done mike what do you see from the elephants particularly the last three games um more
02:22consistency of quality of bats um some days don't have anything to show for but man i love our bats
02:29um you know we we played really good a lot of really good baseball we pitched really well we played
02:35defense and um i was well played all phases you know we continue which i'm confident we will
02:41to do that offensively take those at bats one through nine contributions i was a toddy um louie
02:48bogey crony smally with big knocks but just tough at bats throughout just relentless it's good to see
02:54you know lighter up there and pitches early in the game and just running them out and just using the
02:59whole field and um you know we do that we're gonna um we're gonna go on a little tear for a while
03:06houston astros having a good weekend and really when you think about it one of the better months
03:13in baseball here in july jose altuve homers astros beat the dodgers five to one and they end up getting
03:18the sweep tough series for all-star show hey otani willie adams homers three rbis the giants beat the
03:24a's six to two one of the big stories in baseball this year has been the emergence of matthew boyd he
03:29struck out nine in five innings cubs signed him in the offseason wasn't really thought to be much he made
03:34the all-star team chicago wins by a final over st louis 11 to nothing here's boyd after the game
03:41on his success oh man that's uh it's definitely something super special um it was uh it's it's an
03:50honor um you know something that you get to dream that you dream about and uh it's pretty cool but i
03:56mean i'm a product of the people around me um like i'm having the year i'm having because
04:04of carson kelly and miguel amaya you know reese behind the plate because of the guys in the
04:11infield from maddie shaw and dansby and nico and bushy and birdie and making plays in the infield
04:18and happer and pca tuck and say i'm making plays in the outfield you know like those guys
04:23i'm a product of the people around me you know and uh i don't i don't get that honor without them
04:30i don't get it without the help that tommy and casey and z have poured into me you know so you
04:36know from the pitching side so i'm super thankful for the people around me um and uh and it's it's
04:43it's an honor subway series goes to the mets this weekend as they take two out of three yankees salvage
04:49one win on sunday six to four the final as the yankees are having a really tough time but at least
04:56they get this win yesterday here's aaron boone after the game on the salvaging of a win in the
05:00series it the both six game losing streaks that we that we had very different one was we weren't
05:07scoring this one we're having trouble preventing runs from scoring um but like all the games i don't
05:14know how many games came down to the kind of the wire but it kind of felt like all of them that's that's
05:19the frustrating part is you have chances to win games and we kind of haven't been able to push
05:24through on some of these so um it's a real gritty win you know we're going through it right now um
05:31and for the guys to just a lot of good things happen today withstand some punches back and them
05:38coming back a little bit being able to hang on um you know is is important and developing
05:44the character of your team you got to go through these things and you got to meet meet the moment
05:49sometimes and um and always you know we kind of eye in the off day you know to stop the bleeding a
05:59little bit get a w and the off day is always always better for the soul yeah no question the yankees
06:06needed that win bad meanwhile the blue jays just keep rolling kevin gossman nine strikeouts they beat
06:11the angels three to two looks like toronto's going to be in this thing from start to finish how about
06:15zach wheeler a complete game gives up just one run and the phillies beat the reds three to one
06:22almost a no hitter almost a perfect game for wheeler who just made one bad pitch in the game
06:27one above the minimum wheeler will be an all-star probably starting i would think in the all-star
06:32game as well here he is after the game um same zone as i'm always in but uh i was able to you know
06:39get early contact um kind of get in and out of innings quick and credit the jt um back there
06:46behind the plate as always he's carried me ever since i've been here so um you know it's an honor
06:50to sort of him but uh you know just the defense um made some good plays also boom stott um you know
06:57nick right so um it's all around good game today as good as you felt how much was it to go out there
07:02and go out there and the chance to finish the game um yeah i mean it was tomper just you know
07:08trusted me to go out there and what was a one one-to-one game and you know study changed that
07:13up right there at the end so um you know pulls a little uh stress off my shoulders going back out
07:19there for you know with a two-run lead um so uh yeah it was a good day what can't believe wheeler
07:26really considering retiring after next year is that really true tigers beat the guardians seven to two
07:31folks it's the longest losing streak in major league baseball for cleveland they've lost 10 games in a
07:36row and seem to be falling out of the playoff mix meanwhile on pga tour how about brian campbell he
07:42wins shooting an 18 under wins the playoff at the john deere classic scottish open coming up this week
07:49on the pga tour then the british open next week campbell became the sixth multiple winner this season
07:55uh 400 to 1 400 to 1 to win the john deere classic sort of an incredible finish for them all right pat
08:04evans looks solid didn't set off any fireworks he's got all his faculties in order they're looking good

08:16hearing this from pat i make up stuff for the show to make it sound okay have you not learned that by
08:22now i've been doing this for years here at sports grid thanks for coming on the show really
08:26appreciated good to see you here now that we've got that out of the way a public hearing in missouri
08:31on july 17th i don't want to i mean i read this i don't want to give it fully away i know we got
08:36sports betting coming it's like the only state this year where sports betting is coming to a new place
08:41this is not in jeopardy at all is it no not at all so what this is is last month uh the missouri
08:47gaming commission opened up the public hearing or public comment period for the sports betting
08:52rules now i mean just to rewind just to fill everybody in if you haven't been paying attention
08:56the last year um is you know last year there's a big ballot push an election push to get sports
09:02betting legal after multiple legislative failures in missouri it barely passed like barely over 50 percent
09:10at the ballot box and then we got moving and right afterwards the missouri gaming commission said you
09:15know we want to be up by the summer let's let's get emergency rules in place and let's go
09:19well the the secretary of state said whoa whoa no we're not going to do that you have to wait till
09:25august 31st to get the real rules in place before launching and so that's where we've got this slow
09:30roll process going now the rules have been published now you get the public comment period which is when
09:36anybody really can submit you know suggested changes requested changes what have you generally this is you
09:44know suppliers and the operators the fan duels draft kings the fanatics of the world saying hey we want
09:50this rule changed we want this tweaked you know generally it's to be more friendly to the industry
09:56for when you're reading through them um and and so that's what you know the period is those are all due
10:02on the 16th on the 17th there will be a public hearing which you know then they can come up and
10:08actually talk about it and say what they want and change and whatnot and from there uh you know
10:13they should get finalized shortly thereafter and then go into effect august 31st from there we know
10:19the missouri gaming commission has said a december 1st launch which is the latest it can possibly launch
10:25by law um so it is interesting to see them put that that far ahead um you know also the application
10:32period is open for operators we know there's two in already draft kings and underdog we know uh bet365
10:39is partnered with the cardinals we know um betmgm is with century casinos so we know a little bit of
10:45what's going on we don't know who and if underdog and draft kings are partnered those might be uh for
10:51the untethered licenses in the states which we'll know uh those will be awarded in the middle of august so
10:56we'll know then um so yeah everything's just kind of falling into line and yes it is taking a little
11:01bit longer than maybe initially hoped when it first passed uh at the ballot box in november
11:06but we're steamrolling right towards it and and missourians will have sports betting almost before
11:12you know it i think because this year's going by quickly i will say that it is it is it is december
11:18right around the corner december 1st i believe okay so man so dan so not only sports betting uh out of
11:26the mix in in california but now daily fantasy as well i mean not even like these prediction markets
11:32and calci like literal dfs gonna leave california too well i don't i don't understand why all the
11:38pushback with this what am i missing yeah so this dates all the way back to the fall of 2023 when a
11:44senator in california asked the attorney general to look at daily fantasy sports and tell us what is
11:50really going on uh and so it took almost two years uh for attorney general rob uh i'm blanking on his
11:58name at the moment uh but uh he came out and a huge report you can go read the details at legal sports
12:04report it's too much to really talk about here but he's said pretty much every form of daily fantasy
12:09sports is illegal and yeah it it goes through every single kind of version of daily fantasy sports you
12:18could imagine is not just the pick them uh which probably spurred this on back in the fall of
12:232023 um and yeah it's so it's him saying it's illegal now from there we don't really know what's
12:32going to happen i think there's going to be a lot of legal battles happening you know we've already
12:36seen some action from underdogs you know asking it for it to stop um we've seen prize picks change
12:42from against the house to peer to peer uh because they think that's part of the issue because you know
12:48gambling in uh california is tribal exclusive except you can have card rooms that are you know
12:55a pool of bets so it's an interesting situation and now just because he rules this illegal does not
13:02change the law so i think that's where the thing is you know you there's still a lot of interpretation
13:08left they do have to you know this was a senator that requested this so maybe that you know because
13:13he's ruled it illegal you go back and change laws there who knows it's again not enforceable yet
13:21or it he could i guess turn around and say it's he can try to enforce it but right now it's not it's
13:26in this little limbo area where we're not really sure what's happening he just says it's illegal
13:30but it can't change law again it's going to be likely a legal battle for a long time and we'll see
13:36what happens and this is just another piece of an interesting couple of weeks in california if you
13:41recall just i think it was two weeks ago a bill was or language was inserted into a bill uh that
13:48would outlaw or ban sweepstakes casinos and sports betting um which of course we've seen lots of that
13:54happen this year so california is an interesting market because as you've said there is no legal
14:00online casino there is no legal online sports betting um and now you've just you're seeing the
14:06lawmakers and and say you know what let's see what's actually legal let's tighten this up a little bit
14:10let's let's do some due diligence of course when you get right down to it uh about this ruling from
14:17attorney general is governor gavin newsom came out and said he doesn't agree with it but then you've
14:23got all the tribes who've come out and allotted uh the the the ruling so it's it's a very interesting
14:30kind of situation again more details at legal sports report that goes through everything and and how
14:36we ruled each different kind of uh model of dfs so certainly go go check that out okay and finally
14:44more cease and desist in the state of massachusetts reading out all of the offshore uh sports betting
14:51operators as we've seen and again in my in the in the prediction market for craig mish i had these uh
14:58offshore operators sticking around and saying you know forget you we're gonna still operate but man they
15:04are ceasing and desisting is that a word desisting they sure are and i think i mean this is a huge
15:10you know point of the regulated market is to shut down these illegal uh operators and try to get
15:17consumers betting on safe sites and generating tax revenue for the states and and i think it took a
15:23little while i think a lot of these states and the regulators and even the operators just wanted to
15:28kind of make sure the market was vibrant make sure that they were you know getting and securing
15:33customers before taking action against these these offshore operators last year we saw a huge amount
15:40of action against bovada including in massachusetts where the attorney general sent a seasoned assist and
15:44bovada to your point you know probably the best known offshore sports book has seasoned assisted every
15:52state that has sent them and even some others that haven't sent them seasoned assist letters now they've
15:57come out and the attorney general in massachusetts sent seasoned assist letters to uh bet online and
16:02sports betting.ag which you know i see it pretty regularly on you know so sports influencers saying
16:09you know go bet at bet online and so it's interesting they're still kind of infiltrating the the market and
16:15market acquisition areas um but in massachusetts they say no you can't and it is important to note that
16:21you know massachusetts is one of the most active regulators they they dole out fines a lot to
16:26you know official licensed uh operators and and so it is interesting to see the state actually come in
16:33and say nope if you're not licensed and you're not regulated you do need to get out for good here so
16:38um and this is just again just one state we've seen do a lot of this uh you know michigan arizona
16:44louisiana just last month sent out 40 which i know you are always surprised at how many illegal and offshore
16:50operators there are um but yeah the regulators across the country are getting more uh diligent about saying
16:56hey you're not licensed you're not regulated you're illegal get out please got it all right pat loud
