Well, but first let's begin with the story that is percolating around Major League Baseball right now,
00:04
but surrounding the Players' Union, as it looks like they have a new partnership,
00:07
Penn Entertainment has secured a deal with the Major League Baseball Players' Association to
00:11
make ESPN Bet and the ScoreBet brands officially licensed sportsbooks of the Players' Association's
00:17
arm. It's a non-exclusive licensing agreement giving ESPN Bet and the score permission to use
00:22
players' names, images, and likenesses on wagering websites and apps. So this is the first of its
00:29
kind. And again, non-exclusive, which means other companies can do the same if they pay the
00:34
Players' Association. Meanwhile, the National Basketball Association, regular season winding
00:39
down, also season winding down for the Philadelphia 76ers. That would include Joel Embiid. He's going
00:45
to undergo arthroscopic surgery next week on his troublesome knee. He'll be reevaluated in six
00:50
weeks and is expected to make a full recovery. Hopefully he gets to play a full season next year
00:55
for the Sixers. Meanwhile, contract extension season going on right now in the idea that every
01:03
single young player in Major League Baseball needs one. How about this? Kattel Marte, Jackson Merrill,
01:09
all these players are getting locked up. Already through 2028, Marte has signed a new agreement,
01:13
six years, $116 million, and includes a player option in 2031 for $11.5 million. And also
01:21
Christian Campbell, who's basically played a couple of games in Major League Baseball,
01:24
gets an eight-year, $60 million contract extension with the Boston Red Sox. So
01:30
why are these happening? We will touch on that on tomorrow's show, potentially. We're expected to
01:34
have former big league manager Buck Showalter on the program. Now, the top story in all of sports
01:40
last night had to be this. The Los Angeles Dodgers won again. They were trailing 5-2. They came back
01:45
to tie it. And then do I need to even ask you who hit the game-winning walk-off home run shot for
01:51
the Dodgers yesterday? It was Shohei Ohtani, bobblehead day. Of course, Shohei Ohtani hits
01:55
the walk-off shot, 6-5, the final. L.A. is 8-0 on the Major League season. The flip side of this,
02:04
by the way, folks, the Atlanta Braves are 0-7 to start the season, and no team that's ever started
02:09
0-7 has ever made the playoffs. This is true. Meanwhile, Dave Roberts is running out of words,
02:15
running out of compliments for Shohei Ohtani after another win, although he does say the team
02:20
hasn't played all that great. Hard to believe. I mean, it's, you know, I think if you look at
02:24
our club, we haven't, like I've said, we haven't really played great baseball. And tonight,
02:28
obviously, was the worst night, first game, worst game we've played. But the Penn has been
02:34
fantastic. And you get two young rookie pitchers coming up against a good ball club, not playing
02:41
great, but the 2-0, two innings apiece, shorten the game, give us a chance was huge. And, you
02:48
know, being down 5-0 early and to kind of deploy the bullpen, coming up on an off day,
02:55
resting some guys that needed it, so it allowed us to still manage the workload for these guys.
03:01
But I can't say enough about Dreyer and Penn as well. And also, Kirby hadn't pitched in three days,
03:07
four days, maybe, to pitch a clean seventh was huge to give us a chance and keep him relevant
03:13
and fresh. And so it was just collectively, you know, Shohei being Shohei at the end and,
03:19
you know, what better way to finish the game on his bobblehead night with Walker Homer.
03:25
All right. So Shohei with another home run. Jackson Merrill with a two-run home run as well
03:29
after signing his new contract extension. And by the way, the Dodgers are 8-0 and the Padres are
03:34
7-0. Dylan C struck out seven in six and a third. The Padres have never started 7-0 until yesterday.
03:42
Ivan Herrera, he's the catcher on the St. Louis Cardinals. He had his biggest game ever as a pro.
03:47
Three home runs as they beat the Angels by a final score of 12-5. He's the first catcher
03:51
in Cardinals history to hit three home runs in one game, which definitely impressed his manager,
03:56
Ali Marmol. He can hit. He can really hit. He puts together incredible at-bats, rarely swings
04:03
and misses, just takes a professional at-bat, man. But those were three really, really good swings.
04:12
So happy to see that out of him. Clubhouse is absolutely loving it right now. So very positive
04:17
day. Yeah, that's what I've really liked about our club, is they're not giving in. Even if you
04:23
think about yesterday, it was a frustrating loss, but you go down three in extra innings and you
04:27
come back and put a three spot on. Couldn't overcome it the second time, but I just like
04:31
the overall fight. And then, I mean, that game turned pretty quickly. It's a huge blow. You got
04:37
your number one on the mound, and that happens, and the guys answered back immediately. So
04:42
they're picking each other up, which is a big part of this.
04:46
All right, Garrett Crochet. We'll get to him in a minute. Another huge pitching performance for
04:50
Boston. But first, Jack Leiter, a 1-0 shutout. The Rangers shut out the Reds two days in a row.
04:56
Leiter struck out six in five innings. The Reds' offense has gone cold. Meanwhile, the Red Sox
05:02
have gotten a hot performance to start the season with their contract extension,
05:06
one of many, by the way. 3-0 the final. Crochet, eight innings as they pitched a 3-0 shutout in
05:13
the game yesterday, and Crochet talked about his performance after the win.
05:17
Yeah, yeah. I felt like there were a couple times where I lost it, but the pitches were
05:21
competitive enough. And you add in the fact that we were playing pretty solid defense,
05:26
you know, a couple double plays definitely help your cross.
05:29
This was the first time you pitched into the eighth.
05:32
Yeah.
05:32
How big a deal was that to, like, you know, was there a conversation?
05:36
No, no conversation. I think that I was just in control leading up to that point.
05:42
Yeah, my first start in college, I went eight, and I haven't sniffed it since. So that's,
05:46
it's funny. But, yeah, it felt really good.
05:48
I mean, you know, as ways go to celebrate a contract, like,
05:52
yeah, is that a pretty good one for you?
05:54
Yeah, I'd say so. Very excited, you know, about the long term, but also really focused on the
05:59
present. And, you know, it was nice to kind of have a day to let it breathe so that I could
06:04
really focus up for the start.
06:06
Another huge pitching performance in baseball yesterday from Arizona Diamondback starter
06:10
Zach Gallin. He tied a career-high 13 strikeouts. The Diamondbacks beat the Yankees 4-3. Pete
06:16
Alonzo with a monster series in Miami, a grand slam a couple of nights ago, a two-run or three-run
06:22
home run to tie yesterday as the Mets beat the Marlins 6-5 in 11 innings. Alonzo was on fire.
06:28
I was there. He talked about it after.
06:30
I mean, I'm just happy I was able to come through for the team right there. Yeah, it's just,
06:37
yeah, today was obviously a really important game for us. And, yeah, just happy to help contribute.
06:43
Take us through the home run. You're down three there with two guys on.
06:47
Was that one of the cases where you're looking to go home run?
06:50
No. For me, I'm just looking to just get a good pitch to hit over the middle of the plate.
06:55
And thankfully for me, I was fighting off some really tough pitches there. I mean, he came at
07:02
me with his best stuff. And he located some good ones, especially early in the count. But I was
07:08
able to just stand in control and let the ball show up where I wanted it to. And thankfully,
07:13
I was able to capitalize. Zach Wheeler struck out 10 for the Phillies yesterday. Trey Turner came
07:19
back, hadn't played in a bit with an injury. He had three hits. The Phillies beat the Rockies
07:23
final 5-1. Over in the National Basketball Association, a very competitive game last night
07:29
between Oklahoma City and Detroit. OKC wins this one 119-103, pulling away late. The Thunder are
07:36
now 64-12 on this NBA season, pushing 70 wins. An incredible year for them. Shea Gilgis Alexander
07:44
had 33 points in this one. He's about to get his first ever NBA MVP after the game. Talked about
07:51
making sure the team is focused as they head down the stretch. I would just say it was like
07:56
winning time. We knew having a lead, the only way they can get back in is if they score. And if we
08:02
stop from scoring, we'll win the game, at the least. So that's what we hung our hat. That's
08:06
what we focused on. That's why we got a dub. What is it about these Lou 3s? They just seem
08:11
to be such momentum turners sometimes in the course of a game. Yeah, he's a big shot maker.
08:19
His confidence never wavers. He steps into every shot like he's made his last five.
08:25
And that's why he's become the shooter he's become. He's confident. He works hard.
08:29
They trust his work. Cleveland Cavaliers also picked up a win yesterday against the Knicks,
08:34
124-105. The Houston Rockets have won their 50th game of the season over the Jazz, 143-105. And
08:43
back in the NBA playoff picture, they've won six games in a row, beating themselves at 124-103.
