00:00
It's always exciting when the Breeders' Cup rolls around as we get ready to turn to November
00:08
tomorrow.
00:09
And it's time for the Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in SoCal-y Cal.
00:15
And the Surf and Turf Special, it is a magnificent spot.
00:20
It's time to hook up with our good friend.
00:22
It's me, Gino B. Gino Bacola from the Daily Racing Forum to set us up with everything
00:28
that's going down Friday and Saturday at Del Mar.
00:31
Yeah, when we think about championship events in sports, right, we just saw the World Series.
00:36
We think about baseball.
00:37
We think about basketball, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup, and hockey, and football,
00:42
the Super Bowl.
00:43
That's what the Breeders' Cup is for horse racing.
00:45
Two days, championship races, 14 races.
00:49
So it's kind of like a track meet, Scott, where we have different divisions of horses.
00:53
You have the young horses that are sprinters.
00:55
You have the young horses that want to go a little bit longer.
00:58
You'll have the girls, the best of the girls in the distaff.
01:02
You'll have the boys in the classic, the best of the boys, the young in the juvenile.
01:05
So it is really cool if you're a sports fan and you've ever been out to a track meet where
01:09
you get to see everybody line up against the best and go at it.
01:13
That's what the Breeders' Cup is.
01:14
We have, it kind of reminds me a little bit of March Madness, too, because you have qualifying
01:19
races all over the country and actually all over the world.
01:23
So you really do get the best of the horses from the West versus the best from the East
01:27
versus the best from the Midwest.
01:29
It's really, really cool.
01:31
And man, like, you know, Southern California, like the best place to go and play the ponies
01:35
and have a party is at Del Mar.
01:37
So that's what we're going to be doing over the next few days at Del Mar.
01:40
You know what I did?
01:41
Like, I've been to the Breeders' Cup several times, and I thought the best one I ever went
01:47
to was at Churchill Downs.
01:49
Like I thought, like, going to it there was like, it was better than going to the Kentucky
01:54
Derby there.
01:56
The bigger venues are so great on the big days like that.
02:00
Churchill is so massive.
02:02
Belmont's another place.
02:03
They're doing a lot of renovations over there right now.
02:05
Del Mar is kind of the opposite.
02:07
It's unique.
02:08
It's a small town, like, town area.
02:10
There's not a lot of space kind of coming in and out.
02:12
So it's going to be really crowded.
02:14
And of course, it never rains in Southern California.
02:17
It's actually supposed to rain on Saturday, which would be hilarious, because one of the
02:20
main reasons they have the Breeders' Cup out on the West Coast so often is to stay away
02:24
from the rain.
02:25
So if you were to have it right now at this time of the year, anywhere else, you would
02:28
have the possibility of there being rain if you were running in Saratoga or if you were
02:33
running at Churchill Downs.
02:34
So they try to keep it out West so that way it won't rain.
02:36
And of course, this week, it might rain.
02:38
Wait a minute, you're telling me that it's going to rain on Saturday all day?
02:43
Like 70% on Saturday.
02:44
Friday is not supposed to be quite yet, but I think a little early and late on Saturday.
02:49
So fingers crossed, it's still Thursday right now.
02:52
We have a couple days.
02:53
But you know what, Scotty?
02:54
If we're making money, they're not going to rain on my parade.
02:57
They're not going to rain on my parade.
02:59
I don't care what the weather is like as long as I'm making some Skrilla, as long as I'm
03:02
making some cash.
03:03
So let's get on into it.
03:04
We have a couple plays for you for Friday and a couple plays for you for Saturday.
03:10
Over on Friday, we're going to look at the juvenile fillies.
03:13
So I was going to say something about a young girl.
03:17
I felt like that would get me in trouble with you and me, Scotty.
03:20
So the fillies, the young girls here, Lakara is the horse that I'm going to play.
03:25
She's 12 to 1.
03:26
What I like about her in this spot, Scott, she's versatile.
03:30
She's a horse who's actually shown some speed, but she has shown that if she has a bad start,
03:34
if something happens at the beginning, she can overcome that.
03:37
And that's what I like with these young horses because they've shown me different dimensions.
03:42
Horses that are just really fast, I get worried about playing them when they face better horses
03:47
because everybody else has speed and they're just kind of used to beating up on horses
03:51
that they're better than.
03:52
In this juvenile fillies, we're going to go to Lakara because she has some versatility
03:57
and this might be a horse that we could see in the Kentucky Oaks next year, Lakara at
04:01
12 to 1.
04:02
All right.
04:03
What about the ninth race, the juvenile?
04:07
Yeah.
04:08
What's really fun about this one might be a Kentucky Derby horse next year.
04:11
So these are the horses that we're watching.
04:13
They're two years old right now and next year there'll be three trying to run in the
04:17
Derby, in the Preakness, in the Belmont and in those races.
04:20
I'm going to look to the number five, Jonathan's Way.
04:24
It seems like there is a lot of early speed in this race.
04:27
If you're looking at the pace projector on the graphic that we've shown, it says fast
04:31
early pace up there.
04:32
You can see the one, the five, the two, the four, the six, they're all in the mix.
04:37
Jonathan's Way is really fast, but he also can sit off the pace.
04:41
So that's the key for him in this race.
04:43
What type of tactics will they choose?
04:45
I think he went to the lead last time because that was what was best suited for that particular
04:49
field.
04:50
There wasn't as much speed in there.
04:51
This race, they're going to be going a lot faster early.
04:54
So I think he's going to take back.
04:56
He's going to try to make one late run and he's going to get the jump on the number 10,
05:00
Chancellor McPatrick.
05:01
So four and a half to one on Jonathan's Way.
05:04
That'll be our two plays for Friday.
05:07
Let's go to Saturday and start with the turf race.
05:10
Number seven.
05:11
Yeah.
05:13
I love this horse, Scott.
05:14
This might be my favorite one all weekend long.
05:15
I played Shari are last year because last year I was at Santa Anita in the mornings
05:20
and I got an opportunity to watch these horses work out in the mornings.
05:24
All of the days leading up to the Breeders' Cup, Shari are as a Japanese bred.
05:28
So this is a horse who I hadn't seen all that much and I could not believe how he stood
05:33
out to me on track.
05:35
When you go to watch any good athlete warmup or exercise, it's like you're watching Steph
05:39
Curry in the warmups.
05:40
You know what's good when they're good.
05:43
And when you watch good horses out on the track, they exude confidence like they look
05:48
you in the eyes.
05:49
They're trying to tell you like, I know what's up.
05:50
I'm a horse.
05:51
I'm here on the track.
05:52
It's workout time later.
05:54
I'm going to come run and I'm going to come win.
05:55
I felt like that when you're watching Shari are he had trouble when he finished third
06:00
in the Breeders' Cup turf last year.
06:02
That was a way tougher race.
06:04
I think he's coming into this race off of a nice prep to send him here 10 probably going
06:10
to be about 10 to 1.
06:11
When it's all said and done.
06:12
I think he'll get bet.
06:13
That's perfect for us.
06:14
We like Shari are one of our best bets of the weekend at a really big price in the seventh.
06:17
All right, the seventh race.
06:19
The turf is the three horse Shari are at 10 to 1 right now.
06:23
See if it changes by Saturday.
06:24
All right, the classic the eighth race who you going with here?
06:29
Yeah, we know a lot of these names.
06:31
We know fierceness who has been a really good three-year-old all year long Sierra Leone
06:35
who was the runner-up in the Kentucky Derby.
06:37
I'm going to go to the number one forever young linger a couple different songs.
06:42
I could sing to you on this one Scott if we wanted to say forever young, but I'll keep
06:46
the folks out there.
06:47
They probably heard me singing enough yesterday.
06:49
You guys have had about 15 hours of Gino on the on the shows this weekend.
06:53
So I think everyone's a little a little done with my voice, but forever young is in my
06:58
opinion the horse in this race that has the highest upside.
07:02
So if everybody were to run their best race, I think forever young is best and he's six
07:08
to one probably will be more like four to one.
07:11
I think when it's all said and done and that's fine.
07:12
That's where he should have been.
07:14
But this is a horse who is six for seven Scott his only loss came when he was third in the
07:18
Kentucky Derby and the reason why he was third in the Derby and didn't win was because when
07:23
they were closing Sierra Leone was leaning in on him was bumping him was getting up all
07:28
over him.
07:29
So I think with the smoother trip forever young very very interesting there and that's
07:34
the main event what they've done this year to Scott.
07:36
They put the Breeders Cup classic in the middle of the day because that way it's more primetime
07:40
for TV and what it does is it starts the late wagers.
07:44
So if you want to play like a late pick five it actually starts with the classic and goes
07:48
races eight nine ten eleven twelve if you play early races they end with the classic.
07:53
So that's the really important race that you want to make sure you're right about on Saturday.
07:57
Well it's interesting that two of the biggest races on Saturday is going with Japanese horses
08:02
back to back there in the seven great points because they brought in 19 horses this year
08:08
the most they've ever brought from Japan.
08:10
A lot of it has to do with the Japanese horse racing industry.
08:15
They're just very very smart.
08:17
They're ahead of the game.
08:18
They breed horses very sound and really well from the bottom up and they've taken a couple
08:23
American stallions and done great work with them out there.
08:26
So a lot of these horses that are like Japanese horses or have been running in Japan they're
08:30
actually bred to run well in the U.S. and you know Forever Young is one of them who
08:37
could be a winner in the classic.
08:38
All right let's go to the last one the ninth race the Philly and Mare turf full count Felicia.
08:46
She is fast and there is no other speed in this race Scotty.
08:50
She's going to do what they all want to do wave bye Felicia at twelve to one.
