00:00But let's start off with the big story of the day at the U.S. Open.
00:04Now, there's a couple of stories here percolating.
00:06The first one is J.J. Spahn has not teed off yet.
00:09He was leading yesterday at four under par.
00:12Thurston Lawrence, who I know a lot of you probably never heard of, is three under par.
00:15So story number one today is that Victor Hovland has made a charge to the top of the leaderboard.
00:20And he's currently two under par with a shot to be among the leaders.
00:24Because by the end of the day, Sam Burns doing well as well as Brooks Koepka, Colin Morikawa.
00:31But really, the biggest story of the day today is Scotty Scheffler, who is five over par currently at the U.S. Open
00:39and is in danger of missing the cut, the favorite to win the U.S. Open.
00:44A lot of people paired him up with other players over on FanDuel.
00:47As of right now, if the tournament ended immediately, as in right now, for the cut, he would not make it.
00:54So we will see.
00:54He's got to get cooking here.
00:55He's only got about six holes to play here.
00:58We'll see what happens.
00:59We'll update that for you later in the show.
01:00All right.
01:01Now, last night, another overtime game.
01:03Three out of the first four in the Stanley Cup Finals have gone to overtime.
01:08And Edmonton comes back down.
01:10Three nothing to tie.
01:12And then pushing this thing to OT.
01:13Actually, the Panthers pushed it to OT.
01:15They took the lead.
01:16And then Edmonton wins on a Leon Dryas title goal.
01:19And so they now head back to Edmonton with a chance to take the lead this weekend.
01:24Needless to say, it has been a fantastic series.
01:27Some are saying it's the best series ever.
01:29Here's Chris Knobloch on going to overtime again and picking up a win.
01:33I just wanted to maybe get a thought on, you know, changing your goaltender when, you know,
01:38Stewart played pretty well in that first period.
01:40But and then just a thought on what Calvin did and kind of what he's been doing in this playoffs
01:45and just the run he's been on.
01:47Yeah, it's unfortunate for Stewart to be pulled there.
01:51Our team was flat.
01:53It was, you know, didn't give him any opportunities.
01:56And again, taking three penalties in the first period.
01:59Two high stickings, which I'm hating.
02:01But, you know, unfortunately, we needed to change things up.
02:06And, you know, the change was it was great.
02:11The way he played picks, made some really big saves.
02:14You know, I don't think there was many shots in the second period,
02:17but there was a couple of really good quality ones that he came up big with.
02:20And then, yeah, as the game went on, obviously the one in the overtime,
02:27he got his glove on it just enough to keep that from going in.
02:30And, you know, it was great to see him make the saves when we needed him.
02:35Pulling Skinner could have been the key to Edmonton winning a title if they do.
02:39Meanwhile, the flip side, Paul Maurice, a little bit lost for words after taking a 3-0 lead
02:44and seeing his team blow it only to lose in overtime after the game.
02:48Paul, just another one of those games in the series, another tight one.
02:52Just what did you see from your team?
02:53You guys go up 3-0, and what did you see from Edmonton that got them back in?
02:56Just how the world goes over everything unfolded after that?
03:00Well, it was just a mirror of the first period.
03:02We got into a little penalty trouble there, and we took advantage of it.
03:07And the second period was just the opposite.
03:09I think we were plus three on the power play side early
03:13and minus three on the power play side in the second half.
03:16And then we came out in even tight games, right?
03:20Both teams had some chances there.
03:23Cracked some bars and had some chances they didn't go,
03:26and it's a bad break on the overtime winner.
03:28So three of the four games have gone to overtime,
03:31and I think that's probably the expectation of what we have going forward.
03:36Front left?
03:37When you have a game like this, the way it ends and everything,
03:40is it good to be on a flight tomorrow?
03:44I know it's a long flight, but just you guys are flying out and playing again.
03:49Better if we won it.
03:51But if you plan for seven games, that means you're losing three of them.
04:00All right.
04:02We'll see how the Panthers respond defending champs.
04:05Not on the ropes yet, though.
04:06All right.
04:07Now, the state of New York has made a landmark decision regarding sweepstakes games.
04:11This is casino gaming, slots, poker on video, bingo through a dual currency system.
04:16They're banning these in the state of New York.
04:18So now it moves to assembly for consideration,
04:21where it could make New York the most populous state to enact the ban.
04:24If that happens, they would join Louisiana, Connecticut, and Montana as well,
04:29with these sweepstakes being banned.
04:30We'll see how they decide to operate in other states.
04:33Meanwhile, the successor to Roger Goodell as NFL commissioner,
04:37obviously no time soon, 10, 20 years, who knows?
04:40Brian Rolap was his name.
04:42He is leaving the NFL.
04:43He's becoming the PGA Tour CEO after 22 years as an NFL executive.
04:48So the PGA Tour gains a new executive there.
04:53There's a loss, though, in Major League Baseball.
04:55This comes from the New York Mets.
04:57Kodai Senga yesterday, left with a hamstring strain,
05:01fell to the ground running to first base.
05:02The Mets do win the game, 4-3, and sweep the Washington Nationals.
05:07But Pete Alonzo, watching his teammate go down, was not what he expected.
05:12Pete, you know, we obviously saw how down you were on the field after that play.
05:17What's kind of the swing and emotions for you when that first happens?
05:20And then Mendoza said that Senga got word to you that he had felt it before the throw.
05:26I mean, I still feel awful because, like, I mean, for me,
05:30I just try to make a baseball play, just try to make a play for my pitcher.
05:34And, yeah, I mean, I tried to make the best throw I could, and it just sucks.
05:41I mean, it sucks to be involved in that.
05:42I mean, Senga, I mean, he's one of our guys here, and it sucks.
05:49You know, you hate to see anyone go down.
05:53And, yeah, I just, yeah, it sucks being a part of that.
05:57I mean, yeah, things happen during the season,
05:59but I wish it wouldn't have turned out like that.
06:02Senga's expected to miss multiple weeks.
06:05Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs keep rolling on.
06:08Seiya Suzuki hits a home run.
06:10So does Pete Crowe Armstrong.
06:12Armstrong's had a fantastic season.
06:153-2 the final as PCA, one of the favorites to win the National League MVP.
06:21Here he is on his performance after the game.
06:24You know, I'm just committing to being on time for it.
06:26But he's got a good heater at a low slot that presents itself with a lot of carry
06:31and, you know, a little upshoot.
06:33So we're already thinking on, or I'm already thinking on top.
06:36And, yeah, good to execute a pitch like that.
06:40How much does that work, you know, at 2 o'clock or 2.30 that you put in a lot
06:46add up to your success when you do have the heat?
06:51I mean, the game can go in any which way, any direction.
06:54So I don't know if, like, you know, there's days where that work works
06:59and then when it doesn't.
07:00So I think it's more so just having that as a part of my routine.
07:06Something that me, Males, and DK started doing last year.
07:09And I've had a really nice, like, little group every first day of a series usually.
07:14And it's just fun going out there with JT and Bushy
07:17and then those who sprinkle in like Bernie's out there today.
07:20So it's just fun to watch other guys hit and see the ball fly.
07:23And it's important when, you know, you've been in a cage for a while
07:27and you want to see the ball travel.
07:30So Milwaukee Brewers get a day to remember for a rookie.
07:35And Jacob Mizorowski is his name.
07:38Not sure if you've ever heard of him.
07:39Starting pitcher yesterday made his debut through five no-hit innings.
07:43And the Brewers beat the Cardinals 6-0.
07:46Also, the Brewers made a small trade today,
07:48sending pitcher Aaron Savali to the White Sox for former first-round pick Andrew Vaughn.
07:54Orlando Arcia had a two-run single in the ninth inning
07:56as the Rockies have their first walk-off of the season.
07:59They beat the Giants, come all the way back 8-7, 13th win of the year.
08:03How about the American League Cy Young Award?
08:05Chase seems to be open and shut at this point.
08:07Again, could it be back-to-back for Tariq Skubal?
08:10Seven shutout innings.
08:11The Tigers beat the Orioles 4-1.
08:13The Yankees beat the Royals 1-0 and complete the sweep.
08:17The Texas Rangers all of a sudden have started to hit the ball.
08:20Six home runs, 16-3 over the Twins.
08:22And Jose Altuve, a couple of doubles, a couple of RBIs.
08:25Astros defeat the White Sox 4-2-3.
08:28Welcome back to Newswire here on Sports Grid.
08:31Could be some breaking news here coming
08:32as we're going to have it for you with Sam McQuillen of Legal Sports Report.
08:35You may remember earlier this week, if you watched our show,
08:39that in the state of Illinois, FanDuel taking action
08:42essentially to say, hey, look,
08:43if you're going to take money away from our people
08:46who are betting on sports,
08:47we're going to add a surtax on our end
08:50so we don't lose money.
08:5125 cents is the surtax and could go up to 50 cents
08:55in the other one.
08:56It's some confusion here, honestly.
08:58But let's get to the latest here with Sam McQuillen,
09:00who basically has been following this story.
09:02So essentially, Sam, FanDuel added a tax to all sports bettors,
09:07saying that if you bet on our site,
09:08we're going to charge you a quarter
09:09to make up for the money that the state of Illinois
09:12is taking from us.
09:13No surprise, DraftKings said that they could be interested
09:16in doing the same.
09:17And Sam, it looks like they will follow suit.
09:21Yeah, it's probably the least shocking story
09:23we've talked about in a long time.
09:25You know, one company gets charged more money
09:28by the state and say, hey, we're going to pass the cost down.
09:31By the way, like they've been saying,
09:33they will for years if states do this.
09:34And then the other company, DraftKings,
09:37comes out and says, yeah, it's a great idea.
09:38We'll do the same thing.
09:40And it's being perceived a lot differently
09:42than it was a year ago when DraftKings
09:44announced that they were going to add this surcharge
09:47that they called at the time,
09:48which would have been about a 1.25%
09:51take out of all bets in five high-tax states.
09:55They got rid of that amid a lot of backlash.
09:58But then just a year later,
09:59Illinois raises their tax rate,
10:01effectively 15% to 50%
10:04for the largest companies like DraftKings and FanDuel.
10:06That's because you have a graduated tax they have to pay.
10:10So it's 15% to 40%.
10:11Only DraftKings and FanDuel take enough bets
10:14and make enough money in the state
10:15to trigger that 40% end.
10:18And then on top of that,
10:19it's the 50 cents per bet fee
10:22that gets taxed on on top of that.
10:26So what they're effectively paying now is 50%.
10:28And it used to be 15%, not just a year ago.
10:31So now we're seeing the cost passed down to bettors.
10:34DraftKings comes out saying,
10:36we're going to do the same thing FanDuel does.
10:38And pretty interesting that FanDuel
10:39was the first one to act here.
10:41Usually it's kind of DraftKings
10:42making big noise in the space.
10:44I guess this time around,
10:45they figured they'd let their competitor
10:47kind of take the heat.
10:48And we're going to see the biggest impact of this
10:51passed down to casual, everyday bettors,
10:54those people who are betting $10 to win nine,
10:58you know, $10 parlays.
10:59If you place a $10 bet on something
11:02that's like minus 120 odds, for instance,
11:04those odds are effectively now minus 128
11:06because you're having that 50 cent chunk taken out.
11:10Now, if you bet $500, a thousand,
11:12you're really not going to notice this as much.
11:14So it is good in a PR sense
11:17to kind of turn this back on the lawmakers.
11:21And both companies have come out and said,
11:22if they get rid of this tax,
11:23we'll get rid of the fee as well.
11:25But if you're a big bettor,
11:27if you bet a lot of money,
11:27you're not really going to notice it.
11:29And it's going to allow the companies
11:30to offset that tax in the meantime.
11:33So we'll see if this trickles down to other states
11:35and we'll see if other companies follow suit.
11:37Yeah, no, it's definitely one of the stories
11:39of the summer here.
11:40The other story of the summer
11:41are these prediction markets.
11:43The Senate getting involved
11:44to figure out whether or not these should exist.
11:47That's really the bottom line.
11:49What are prediction markets?
11:50Let's educate people here.
11:51These are companies that basically have listed
11:56the possibility of you putting money on something
11:58that can be predicted in the future.
12:00Does it sound like sports betting?
12:02Yes, it does.
12:04Do they say it's sports betting?
12:05No, they don't.
12:07So naturally, Sam, eventually this summer
12:09or in the fall, this is going to come to a head.
12:12One way or the other, Sam,
12:14prediction markets are going to either be eliminated
12:16or they're going to pop up everywhere
12:19around the United States
12:20and sports betting is going to be the wild, wild west.
12:25Yeah, and by the way, Craig,
12:27they already are popping up everywhere.
12:29If you open up a Robinhood app right now,
12:31you can not only pay for your finance
12:34or Uber Eats order or your DoorDash order,
12:36but you can be asked if you want to bet
12:38on the outcome of a game.
12:39But like you so eloquently put it,
12:41not actually betting.
12:42You just had to use a lot of words
12:44to explain what the actual process was.
12:46And then you have to take five seconds and say,
12:49wait, that sounds a lot like sports betting.
12:50And for lawmakers, it's the same.
12:52They just held a hearing this week
12:53on the new nominee to head the CFTC,
12:57which supposedly is going to be the agency
12:59that figures all this out
13:02when this comes to a head this summer.
13:03They've talked about having a hearing
13:05to be the first step of figuring out
13:07what the heck we do in this process
13:09because you've had companies like Kalshi,
13:11Polymarket, just launch these markets
13:13in 50 states and say,
13:16oh, we're not sports betting.
13:17And we can keep acting.
13:18And by the way,
13:19they don't have to get any of their markets
13:21approved by anybody.
13:21They can offer whatever, whenever,
13:23because they operate via a self-certification process.
13:27Meanwhile, the CFTC has done nothing.
13:29There's a new commissioner that's been nominated.
13:31The Senate is hearing the nomination.
13:34And as Pat hearing this come up,
13:38the nominee, Brian Quintin,
13:41is a member of Kalshi,
13:44which is the company in this space.
13:46He asked whether or not he's going to recluse himself
13:51once nominated.
13:52We'll get back to Sam here.
13:54Sam, just a second.
13:54We're getting some technical difficulties here.
13:57So let's hit that refresh button
13:58to see if we can get Sam back going here,
14:01talking about the prediction markets
14:03here in the United States.
14:05As Sam said,
14:05Robinhood and other companies
14:07are pumping their content out,
14:09pumping their prediction markets out.
14:11Not a way to bet on sports,
14:13but some of an alternate way as well.
14:15Sam, we lost you there about 10 seconds ago.
14:17So go ahead and continue.
14:18And then we'll get to this last story.
14:20Sorry about that.
14:21Yeah, the Trump's nominee to head the CFTC,
14:24which is supposedly going to figure out
14:26whether these prediction markets are sports betting
14:28or whether they are not,
14:29like you put it, Craig.
14:31He is actually a board member of Kalshi,
14:32which is the biggest company in this space.
14:34He was grilled by senators at the hearing this week
14:36about potential conflict of interest.
14:39He said he'll recluse himself if he gets nominated,
14:42but a lot of senators have brought up the fact that,
14:44you know,
14:44you'll still kind of have a bias against us.
14:47So on top of that,
14:49Donald Trump's son,
14:50Donald Trump Jr.
14:51is also a member of Kalshi
14:52and works for that company.
14:54So it'd be very favorable for the administration
14:56and the guy who has been nominated
14:58to figure this all out
15:00if this stuff continues.
15:01Meanwhile,
15:02other people have called for them
15:04to reject his nomination.
15:05I think only about nine cabinet members
15:07or federal agency members
15:08have ever been rejected in U.S. history,
15:10the last one being in 1983.
15:12So that would be very unlikely,
15:14but it is possible that he withdraws his name
15:17if this gets enough kind of attention
15:18about potential conflict of interest.
15:20So they're going to decide on this process
15:23in the coming weeks,
15:24whether he's confirmed or not,
15:25but it just adds to the growing uncertainty
15:27around this crazy prediction market stuff,
15:29which again,
15:30is technically not sports betting,
15:32but it kind of is.
15:33Yeah, technically, right?
15:36Okay, so let's close it out.
15:38Genius Sports,
15:39we've talked about them
15:40a bunch of times here on the show.
15:42Tech company that is extending their partnership
15:44with the National Football League.
15:46Tell us more about Genius Sports
15:47and why this matters in our industry.
15:51Yeah, you might not know the name Genius Sports
15:53if you're a better or a fan,
15:56but you do know what they do.
15:58They power the live stats
16:00behind the NFL broadcasts.
16:02So that's anytime they get into like the nitty gritty
16:05of here's how many miles per hour
16:06Patrick Mahomes is throwing here
16:08or the percentage of a catch on this play,
16:11all the cool stats you see on the broadcast,
16:13that's all powered by Genius Sports.
16:15And that's because they're the exclusive
16:16data rights provider of the NFL.
16:19Now they also do a lot with betting.
16:21So they give all that data to sports books as well.
16:24And that allows live betting to really exist
16:27for them to collect data,
16:28for them to offer these kinds of markets.
16:29So they just extended their partnership
16:31with the NFL through 2029,
16:34which is pretty big news in the tech space.
16:36It's going to allow Genius
16:37to potentially have ads in sports books,
16:41potentially through the live betting experience,
16:43potentially have more digital ads
16:45on the NFL broadcast.
16:47So investors are really happy
16:49about that news in Genius.
16:50The stock jumped about 3%,
16:52but what it could mean for us
16:54the consumers,
16:55the bettors is that we're going to have
16:56more real-time powered live stats,
16:59live betting on the broadcast.
17:01Obviously, technology is going to continue
17:02to get better.
17:03And because Genius has extended this partnership,
17:05it just signals that they're going
17:07to keep investing in this space.
17:09And we could see some really interesting
17:11new markets this NFL season.
17:12I'm still waiting on, you know,
17:15whether or not you can bet
17:15how fast a quarterback is throwing.
17:17And I don't think we're far away.
17:19And I think this partnership signifies it,
17:20especially with the commitment from the NFL.
17:22So, yeah, agreed.
17:24Sam, great stuff as always.
17:25Enjoy your weekend.
17:27Hockey, football, golf.
17:28It's better than that.
17:29Thanks again for coming on.
17:30Thanks a lot.
