Another stormy day in the Southeast on July 21 led to isolated flooding from Kentucky into the Carolinas and beyond.
Transcript
00:00As we move farther to the east, flash flooding continues to be the focus.
00:04It's been days of this at this point.
00:06I know if you're in this area, you don't need me to tell you that.
00:08But let's talk about the rainfall totals we've seen over the last 24 hours.
00:11So most of this yesterday afternoon and evening.
00:14Our top rainfall total coming in from Illinois here, 8.5 inches.
00:18That is the outlier here.
00:19Everyone else is seeing less than 4 inches of rainfall, really.
00:23But at this point, it almost doesn't matter.
00:26Because even these smaller rainfall totals, just about 2 inches, just about 1 inch or 1.25 inches,
00:32we're still getting flash flooding issues in these areas, again, because it's been days of this at this point.
00:39I want to show you our storm reports from yesterday.
00:41Yes, none of these are from today just yet.
00:43So that's a good sign that we aren't seeing these issues quite yet, but we're still seeing rainfall.
00:48Now, one of these reports coming in from Kentucky is talking about a creek out of its banks.
00:53I've been talking about the last couple of days that we could see this as an issue.
00:56Not really looking at river flooding, but some of the smaller waterways, streams, and creeks.
01:01With this amount of rainfall, this is not surprising that we're seeing creeks out of its banks.
01:06We're seeing some of these flooding issues.
01:08Other flood reports, flash flooding reports coming in, mainly flooded roadways.
01:12Some homes flooded.
01:14A lot of flooded roadways overall.
01:16We showed you those images of people trying to drive through flooded roadways,
01:20which, of course, we never recommend.
01:21Taking a look at radar zoomed in here, we do have a couple of flash flood warnings that have popped up,
01:26and even a severe thunderstorm warning or two.
01:28So, yes, these are smaller cells of thunderstorms, but they're carrying a lot of lightning,
01:32some damaging wind gusts, and, of course, that flooding threat.
01:35It really only takes an isolated downpour to end up with some flash flooding at this point.
01:40We'll continue to see this trend of isolated downpours through the evening.
01:43We're going to see things fizzle out, though, as we head into the overnight hours,
01:47and then we dry out for a couple days.
01:48That's the good news.
