Typhoon Wipha wreaked havoc across southern China on Sunday, forcing nearly 6.7 lakh people to evacuate as it battered Guangdong and Hong Kong with fierce winds and heavy rain.
Videos on social media showed families, children, and commuters struggling to stand as gusts toppled trees and collapsed scaffolding. Over 400 flights were grounded in Hong Kong, affecting 80,000 passengers, and hundreds more flights were delayed in nearby cities. Cathay Pacific suspended flights for much of the day, while ferries and other public transport services were halted.
At least 26 people were injured, over 250 people took refuge in temporary shelters, and more than 470 trees were uprooted in Hong Kong alone.
While less destructive than past storms like Mangkhut and Hato, Wipha caused widespread disruption to daily life and travel, with authorities still assessing the full damage.
