00:55Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:56I'm Luis Alberto Matos from De JesĂşs Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:00We're being with the news, stay with us.
01:16The people of Nicaragua celebrate the 46th anniversary of the triumph of the Sandinista people's revolution.
01:21The date marks the beginning of the victory of the Sandinista revolution that overthrew the
01:25dictatorship of the Somoza family, which ruled the nation from 1936 to 1979.
01:31On Saturday, tribute will be paid to the thousands of men and women who gave their lives in defense
01:36of the popular revolution, building a new Nicaragua full of strength, security, and order.
01:41Co-president Rosario Murillo invited the people to celebrate the party's achievements.
01:52The government of Venezuela has sent a congratulatory message to the people of Nicaragua and to the
01:56government of reconciliation and national unity on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of
02:02the triumph of the Sandinista revolution.
02:03The statement reads,
02:05The Sandinista revolution represents one of the most genuine expressions of anti-imperiment
02:09in the continent.
02:11Its historical strength resides in the profound consciousness and in the unwavering vocation
02:15of a people who through all kinds of circumstances has defended its right to self-determination.
02:21Under the wise leadership of co-presidents, commander Daniel Ortega and camarader Rosario Murillo,
02:27the revolution has restored and guaranteed fundamental rights to its people and they have faced current
02:33challenges with love.
02:34Venezuela sees in the Sandinista revolution and in the people of Nicaragua a permanent source
02:39of inspiration.
02:40Our peoples have shared battles and victories, assistance and hope, weaving an indestructible
02:46brotherhood to champion peace, sovereignty and the right to pursue happiness despite permanent
02:52threats from the imperialism and its local supporters.
03:01In the United States, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that Brazilian Judge Alexander
03:05de Moraes' visa to the U.S. has been revoked and that the same applies to all other members
03:10of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court and to their immediate family.
03:14This measure was prompted by Judge Moraes ordering an electronic ankle bracelet for former
03:19President Jair Bolsonaro who is facing trial for attempted coup d'etat and other serious
03:24crimes.
03:25If found guilty, Bolsonaro will be facing a 40-year prison sentence.
03:29This is a new act of intervention by the U.S. Secretary of State who has deemed a sovereign
03:33country's court decision as a political witch hunt in violation of fundamental human rights
03:38which affects citizens of the United States.
03:41Meanwhile, in Ecuador, several organizations that defend digital rights filed an action of
03:51unconstitutionality against the intelligence law promoted by President Daniel Novoa.
03:56Organizations such as the Permanent Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, the Women's
04:01Communication Workshop, and the Regional Foundation for Human Rights Counseling, among others, presented
04:06before the Constitutional Corridor Action.
04:08The organizations claim that several articles of the law seriously violate fundamental rights
04:13enshrined, such as freedom of expression, access to public information, or the protection of
04:19social data and privacy, among a long list.
04:22Jonathan Finlay, one of the activists promoting the legal action, states that the law empowers
04:27the state to arbitrarily order the persecution and collection of mass data.
04:35We have a history of illegal espionage.
04:42We can remember the year 2014 when the Galileo software was purchased by the government of the day.
04:48At that time it was used against journalists, against human rights defenders, and it was acquired
04:54at that time by the intelligence agency of that time.
05:01Since then we have seen a series of events that have attracted a lot of attention, such as the harassment
05:08of human rights defenders, journalists, censorship, and recently during the case of Fernando Villavicencio,
05:15it became known that the software was being used for espionage tasks against political opponents.
05:26Even the then director Bolivar Tello said in the National Assembly that this emergency system
05:32had been used to spy on him.

06:07Welcome back.
06:23In Spain, eight aircrafts were added Saturday morning to the crews firing a wildfire in the
06:28southeastern province of Alicante.
06:30Ground teams have focused their efforts on security, paying special attention to the head
06:35of the fire and to its right flank, which has affected Font Roja Natural Park, an area of high ecological value.
06:42The use of aircraft is considered key to support containment and cooling work in hard-to-access areas,
06:48and it comes at a great expense to the Alicante Firefighters Provincial Consortium.
06:53Valencian Community Government Delegate Pilar BernabĂŠ said the starting point of the fire is a religious community
06:59near the forest area.
07:01The Civil Guard and the Nature Protection Office have opened an investigation to clarify the cause of the fire.
07:15According to local authorities, the fire has affected close to 1,500 hectares.
07:20Several families residing near the affected area have been ordered to evacuate as a preventive measure,
07:25given the fact that there are still active outbreaks.
07:28Thanks to the containment efforts of emergency crews and despite increased winds expected in the coming hours,
07:34so far only two people have been reported injured.
07:46And in Colombia and southern historical PAC party delegates from all over the country
07:50are meeting in Bogota to assess progress made in promoting unity within the party.
07:55Regional founding leaders are attending this meeting which gathers over 1,200 delegates to debate on how to promote party cohesion
08:02so as to come up with a sound platform for the next general election.
08:06High on the agenda is to agree on a schedule for a national campaign to nominate candidates to the presidency
08:12and to the Colombian Congress.
08:14And in Chile, university students are demanding that the government cover higher education food scholarships,
08:28known as VAES, for the benefit of more than 15,000 students.
08:32The Chilean Students Confederation demonstrated in front of the Chilean Monetary Institution
08:36to denounce the lack of budget to cover the food scholarship.
08:39This year, the amount assigned to each student beneficiary increased,
08:44a fact announced as a historical milestone by the current government of Gary Boric.
08:48However, the number of beneficiaries does not increase its ceiling,
08:52leaving thousands of students without this basic access.
08:55The Confederation also seeks the creation of a working table
08:58where they can participate and influence the budget discussion as soon as possible.
09:09If we consider that the VAES is a fundamental scholarship for the development and permanence of the student in higher education,
09:18and in this sense the fact that so many students are left at this moment without receiving the benefit,
09:24because of this manual, of allocation and of the lack of budgetary planning in the quotas for June, July, and onwards,
09:36is an extremely complex situation that affects, in effect, as many students as families.
09:42Because we understand that the food that should be guaranteed by the state on the permanence of higher education today,
09:47is not being effective, is not making reflected for the welfare of society and the student body as a whole.
09:57And in Mexico, the Navy has struck a significant blow against drug trafficking in the north of the country,
10:02a reason that due to its geographical location is a key focal point for this illicit activity.
10:08Specifically, in the state of Sinaloa, known to be a cartel stronghold,
10:12several laboratories were dismantled.
10:15In these operations, 4,800 kilograms of methamphetamine and more than 47,500 liters of chemical substances were seized,
10:24along with various laboratory items, demonstrating the magnitude of drug production in the area.
10:30Although these have revealed that this is not an isolated event so far in 2025,
10:3550 such facilities have been discovered throughout Mexico,
10:39underscoring the persistence and scale of the drug trafficking problem in the country.
10:54And over the last few hours, several people are presumed to have been wounded in a Ukrainian attack on the Russian city of Donetsk.
11:04According to local authorities, the Ukrainian missiles hit civilian areas with no military presence or weapons,
11:10shelling damaged houses, buildings and a clinic.
11:13So far, there is no official report on any victims, but at least one person was found seriously wounded at the site of the attack.

15:28For her part, the co-founder of Palestine Action prepared this Monday for a court hearing where she would request the repeal of the anti-terrorism law.
15:53The national armed groups signed an agreement of principles for a ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

16:07document orders an end to air, land, and sea attacks, as well as any propaganda that promotes hatred.
