In El Salvador, homage was paid to the victims of the El Mozote massacre perpetrated by the
00:15
army in 1981, where almost a thousand people were killed.
00:23
In Venezuela, citizens go to the polls on Sunday to elect over 15,000 justices of peace
00:29
in communal districts throughout the country.
00:35
In Gaza, injured people and dead bodies were transported to the Baptist Hospital after
00:40
overnight Israeli airstrikes targeted the Abu Iskander area.
00:56
Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana,
01:01
Cuba.
01:02
We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:03
In Argentina, a country with a high poverty rate, a soup kitchen organized a holiday event
01:09
for children from low-income households.
01:12
The project was sent in motion by the soup kitchen Los Chicos de la Villa, a community
01:17
space in Lomas de Zamora, outskirts of Buenos Aires.
01:20
The activity looked to stimulate a community that has over 66% of children under 14 living
01:27
in low-income households.
01:29
The non-liberal policies implemented by Javier Millet's government have pushed millions of
01:33
Argentinians into poverty and thousands depend on soup kitchens to survive.
01:47
This is the first time they get a present.
01:50
I'm excited because I was never able to buy them presents.
01:54
Next year, I start high school to give them a good future.
01:58
I will finish my studies and pursue a career.
02:01
From an economy standpoint, there are more and more hungry people.
02:04
You can see it in the streets.
02:08
In Bolivia, over 7.3 million citizens are called to the polls this Sunday to elect 19
02:13
judges to the country's high courts.
02:16
The Supreme Electoral Court set up at least 5,597 voting centres throughout the nation,
02:22
with over 33,000 polling stations.
02:25
The voting day began at 8 am local time and is expected to end at 4 pm.
02:32
Bolivians participate in the process to decide for the new magistrates of the corresponding
02:36
judicial entities.
02:37
At the same time, President Luis Arce exercised his right to vote in the city of La Paz, accompanied
02:43
by some members of the Executive Cabinet.
02:52
In El Salvador, homage was paid to the victims of the El Mozote massacre perpetrated by the
02:57
army in 1981, where almost a thousand people were killed.
03:01
Forty-three years later, the victims let relatives continue to demand justice.
03:06
Members and relatives of the 988 people executed, including 558 minors, commemorated the 43rd
03:15
anniversary of what has been labelled as one of the worst tragedies in the history of Latin
03:20
America.
03:21
In addition, representatives of humanitarian organisations from El Mozote and the lawyers
03:25
of the victims in the criminal proceedings against retired soldiers attended the ceremony.
03:37
This anniversary has motivated us and also the communities to maintain the slogan of
03:41
justice now, to demand that this evidence be exposed, so that there may be a debate
03:46
and ultimately a sentence in this case.
03:48
It is inadmissible that it's been 43 years of impunity, with the government, the army
03:53
and the justice system protecting war criminals.
04:10
On Saturday, at least two people were killed as fierce winds from Cyclone Chido lashed
04:15
a friendly Indian Ocean territory of Mayotte, authorities warned of severe damage.
04:20
The deaths have been confirmed so far, in Petite Terre, the smaller of the two main
04:25
islands of Mayotte.
04:26
The acting transport minister said the Bandazi airport suffered major damage, especially
04:32
to the control tower.
04:34
Cyclone Chido is reported to be the most violent and destructive storm in the territory since
04:39
1934.
04:40
On the other hand, acting Interior Minister Bruno Ritaliou posted that 140 French troops
04:46
and firefighters would be sent to the scene to help with the recovery efforts, doubling
04:51
the deployment sent earlier in the week.
04:59
It is a truly unusual situation.
05:02
There had not been such a climate event in Mayotte since 1934, which, as the Prime Minister
05:08
said, included wind, with wind gusts up to 226 km per hour, and then rain.
05:15
And you know that makeshift homes over there sit on hillsides.
05:19
And as rainwater ran downhill and the land became unstable, it obviously was a disaster.
05:25
All makeshift homes have been completely destroyed.
05:29
And then the third element was that powerful waves in some cases caused coastal flooding.
05:35
So this climate event was absolutely tragic, tragic.
05:38
The state, the agencies, the ministries are mobilizing.
05:44
While visiting the French island of Corsica, Pope Francis expressed his support for the
05:49
people suffering the consequences of Cyclone Chido in Mayotte.
05:55
And we are praying for the victims of the cyclone that has hit the Mayotte archipelago
05:59
in recent hours.
06:01
I am spiritually close to all those affected by this tragedy.
06:10
On Sunday, a sand and dust storm hit southwestern Iran, resulting in the closure of schools
06:15
and public buildings and the cancellation of flights due to poor visibility.
06:19
A thick yellow fog shrouded the Iranian provinces of Kuzestan and Burshehr, where buildings
06:25
were barely visible and residents had to protect themselves with face masks.
06:30
As a result of the storm, school and public services were closed in southwest Iran and
06:35
all flights were suspended until further notice.
06:38
In addition, in the city of Abadan in Kuzestan province, the air quality was considered hazardous,
06:44
exceeding by more than 25 times the pollution indexes considered acceptable by the World
06:49
Health Organization.
06:50
Dust and sand storms have long affected the region, but have become more intense and frequent
06:56
in recent years, mainly due to climate change.
07:03
Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique, bringing strong winds after passing through
07:08
islands in the southeastern Indian Ocean.
07:11
According to local authorities, Cyclone Chido made landfall near Pemba, in the province
07:16
of Cape Delgado, on the north coast of Mozambique.
07:20
It brought strong winds and rains that also affected the province of Nampula.
07:24
A preliminary report indicates that there was damage to buildings and power outages
07:29
in several parts of the country.
07:31
Cyclone Chido hit Mozambique after passing through the French department of Mayotte,
07:36
where it left more than 14 people dead and material damage.
07:39
The nearby islands of Comoros and Madagascar were also affected.
07:48
And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
07:51
TELUS in English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
07:56
We'll be right back, stay with us.
08:01
Welcome back to From the South.
08:09
On Sunday in Venezuela, for the first time, elections are being held to choose justices
08:13
of peace in communal districts throughout the country.
08:17
The Venezuelan National Electoral Council reported that 100% of the more than 4,000
08:22
voting centres in the country opened early in the morning.
08:26
People 15 years old or older can vote for up to three candidates.
08:31
Communal justices of peace will be mediators in matters such as family conflicts, neighbourhood
08:36
conflicts, among other situations.
08:38
In addition, their functions include promoting conciliation, harmony and preventing violence
08:44
in the communities.
08:50
Eternal strength, we will always win and we will push forward, Mr. President.
08:55
Count on our community today, December 15th, and on January 10th, trust that our community
09:00
will be there, with our justices of peace, to continue fighting for our communities.
09:06
Well, today we are choosing our justices of peace, people who are going to represent us
09:12
in the courts, in the prosecutor's office, any problem that may arise in our communities,
09:16
we will go to our justices of peace so that they may help us solve it in the communities.
09:22
We have chosen honest men and women, who side with the people, people who are going to help
09:27
us, and that should remain honest in everything they may do to defend us.
09:36
They would solve family conflicts and thus help clear up the courts a little.
09:42
The justices of the peace will be a very important figure, representing the law in your community.
09:51
One would no longer have to go to the prosecutor's office.
09:55
Now, we will be able to solve the problems within our communities.
10:04
This is something unprecedented and very important for our country.
10:11
Justices of the peace come to fulfill a very important role given the present situation
10:15
in the country.
10:16
Why do I say it is important?
10:21
Because conflicts from any standpoint must be mediated.
10:28
And the work that justices of the peace will do in Venezuela will be essential to help
10:34
strengthen community justice.
10:51
In Gaza, injured people and dead bodies were transported to Al-Ali, a refugee camp in the
11:21
Arab Hospital, also known as the Baptist Hospital, after overnight Israeli strikes targeted the
11:26
Abu Iskandar area.
11:28
Gaza's civil defence agency reported Sunday that overnight Israeli strikes across the
11:33
Palestinian territory killed at least 18 people, including four displaced individuals who had
11:39
sought refugee in a tent.
11:41
In this sense, rescuers worked through the night, recovering the 10-18 bodies, while dozens
11:47
more were injured in the ongoing Israeli aggression across Gaza.
11:51
In addition, another four were killed and eight injured when an Israeli missile struck
11:56
a tent sheltering dozens of displaced people in their Al-Bala city in central Gaza.
12:06
A large number of martyrs are still under the rubble in a three-storey house belonging
12:10
to the Al-Aruqi family in the Abu Iskandar area.
12:13
Civil defence crews are still working to retrieve the martyrs from under the rubble, but the
12:17
crews are unable to do so due to the lack of capabilities available to the civil defence
12:22
and medical crews.
12:26
This Saturday, thousands of Israeli troops stood due to the streets demanding an agreement
12:30
for the release of hostages held in Gaza.
12:33
Demonstrators in the city of Jerusalem carried 100 symbolic coffins in front of the residence
12:37
of the Israel President Isaac Herzog.
12:40
In the midst of the demonstration, Israeli police forces arrested four people.
12:45
Negotiations for the exchange of prisoners between the Palestinian Islamic Resistance
12:49
Movement, Hamas, and Israel have so far failed due to the systematic blockade by the Israeli
12:56
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
13:03
It is unthinkable that political considerations are preventing us from reuniting with our
13:09
loved ones and keeping our hostages from their freedom.
13:16
The Israeli public wants the hostages home.
13:39
Go away.
13:49
Welcome back to From the South.
13:51
Libya's National Oil Corporation has declared force major after Sawilla Refinery's reservoirs
13:57
were seriously damaged as a result of ongoing clashes between armed groups.
14:02
Situated in the west of the country, the refinery, which is key to Libya's energy needs and economy,
14:07
processes crude oil from the Sahara oil fields, one of the largest of the country, which produces
14:13
diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, and LPG, essential for domestic fuel supply.
14:18
Normally, the refinery produces over 100,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
14:23
Any disruption on its functioning is a direct assault to Libya's economy and finances.
14:29
On Sunday, Pope Francis arrived on the French island of Corsica for a one-day visit focusing
14:39
on the Mediterranean.
14:40
The visit will last nine hours and will include a 40-minute meeting with the French President
14:46
Emmanuel Macron.
14:47
The Pope attended the closing of the event Popular Religiosity in the Mediterranean and
14:52
delivered a speech focusing on migration, regional conflicts, and the climate crisis.
14:57
This is the first time a Pope visits the island which Genoa ceded to France in 1768
15:04
and which has a strong nationalist movement that seeks independence.
15:13
The Russian emergency minister reported that two fuel-carrying ships are currently sinking
15:18
off the coast of the Black Sea.
15:20
Russian tanker Volgoneft 212, carrying over four tons of fuel oil, is sinking in the
15:26
Kerch Strait.
15:27
Due to a heavy storm, the ship broke in half, the bow was torn off, and the crew was forced
15:32
to take shelter in the stern.
15:34
The Ministry of Emergencies reported that a helicopter with rescuers and a rescue tow
15:40
were dispatched to the scene, saving 13 crew members out of the 14 that were on board.
15:46
Subsequently, another vessel was damaged in the same area, the Volgoneft 239.
15:51
There were 14 people on board of the vessel, which was also carrying over four tons of
15:56
fuel oil.
15:57
The first vessel is reported to have run aground, while the second one is drifting towards Teheran.
16:03
Due to the incident, oil products have been spilled all over the area.
16:17
The prestigious International School of Film and Television of San Antonio de los Baños,
16:28
Cuba, celebrates on Sunday the 38th anniversary of its foundation.
16:32
The school was established on December 15, 1986, by the Committee of Filmmakers of Latin
16:38
America as a branch of the Foundation of the New Latin American Cinema.
16:42
Since then, each year it receives around 330 teachers and film specialists from various
16:47
regions.
16:48
Its academic program includes regular course modalities, international workshops and master's
16:54
degrees, from which 1,094 professionals from 64 countries have graduated.
16:59
The educational institution exhibits significant results, and it is worth highlighting that
17:05
over 400 students and graduates from this school have won awards at important international
17:11
film festivals, such as the Oscars, Goya and Cannes.
