And in Palestine, Israeli occupation forces continue attacking Palestinians at eight distribution
00:38
centers. Nearly 40 civilians were killed in the last 34 hours in Gaza.
00:48
Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:53
We begin with the news.
01:05
In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro reiterated that the country does not need licenses to
01:10
continue promoting national hydrocarbon production and its economy. During his television program
01:16
Con Maduro Mas, the Venezuelan President highlighted that the country's hydrocarbons engine is
01:22
producing close to 1.1 million barrels of oil per day, despite the restriction of licenses
01:28
to oil companies by the United States government as part of its criminal measures of coercion
01:34
against the people. In that sense, President Maduro stated that Venezuela is a free, independent
01:39
and sovereign country that will not be coerced by the U.S. imperialism or its illegal sanctions.
01:54
The hydrocarbon engine has four components, oil, and we are producing, we are already close
02:00
to one million one hundred thousand barrels per day, with our own lung. That they say that such
02:07
and such a company left, that it returned, not that it left, not that they took away the license
02:13
of such and such a company, I am not going to name it. That they took it away, that they took it away,
02:19
that they put it away, that they put it away, take away what you want to take away. Put what you want to
02:25
put Venezuelan oil will continue to grow in its production with its own lungs, without depending
02:31
on anyone. Venezuela does not need licenses. Do we need a license to breathe? Imagine if we needed a
02:39
license, not that the United States has not approved the license for Venezuelans to breathe, one's eyes
02:45
would roll back in one's head. But they did approve it, thank goodness. We need a license to have two
02:52
hands to work and produce. There go the empires with their arrogance that believe that with a license
02:58
they can govern the world. Venezuela is not governed with a license, we are free, independent, rebellious,
03:05
and sovereign, and we will continue to grow in the production of hydrocarbons.
03:14
Venezuelan authorities held a press conference to provide updates ahead of the upcoming first
03:19
Agroalba Fair. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Hill announced preparations for the Great Agroalba
03:25
Expo Fair to be held this Thursday, June 5th, and Friday, June 6th. Hill explained that this innovative
03:32
integration mechanism of ALBA-TCP aims to promote productive investment and strengthen food sovereignty,
03:39
promoting sustainable development. According to the International Center for Productive
03:44
Investment, Agroalba lays the foundations for inclusive and sustainable economic development
03:50
for the benefit of the region, and the promotion of Petro-Caribe and ALBA-TCP.
04:08
Agroalba, as you know,
04:10
is an initiative that arose from the Presidential Summit on December 14, 2024,
04:18
when we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of our America.
04:24
The presidents, heads of state and governments, and prime ministers, called for the creation of this
04:30
initiative, which kicks off with all ALBA member, countries, and beyond to produce,
04:39
invest, and create the shield, we could say, of food security,
04:47
and sovereignty for ALBA, for the Caribbean, and for the Latin American region.
04:51
The Secretary General of the Bolivarian Alliance, Jorge Arreaza,
04:59
said they expect to meet Agroalba's goals to meet the needs of all ALBA countries.
05:08
As I say to the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, the ALBA Secretariat is very grateful for this
05:14
proposal from President Nicolas Maduro. We already had the President of Petro-Caribe as a great tool
05:20
for the development of countries, and for generosity and cooperation. In that same spirit,
05:27
Agroalba is being created so that we can use those 58 million hectares of land in all our countries,
05:34
and the waters of all our countries, to produce food and to meet our needs.
05:39
In other news, Brazil hosts the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum that will count on the
05:49
attendance of delegations from 31 legislative parties and some 150 parliamentarians from 15 countries.
05:56
From Tuesday, June 3rd to Thursday, June 5th, the Brazilian Parliament will be hosting international
06:02
debates on legislative initiatives in areas such as artificial intelligence regulation, global health,
06:08
climate crisis and economic development. The event kicks off with the encounter of BRICS women
06:14
parliamentarians, in which they will address the role of women in the digital era in the fight
06:20
against the climate crisis and their function as agents and beneficiaries of financing. Meanwhile,
06:26
the shares of the Foreign Affairs Committees of the BRICS Parliament will further meet to discuss
06:32
the strengthening of trade among the member countries.

07:00
Welcome back to From the South. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called on the Mexican people to look ahead
07:13
following the arrival of new members of the nation's Supreme Court of Justice. The head of state pointed
07:18
out that the work of those who leave the country's top court should be reviewed, but that it should not be a
07:24
matter of persecution. She highlighted the autonomy of the judiciary and that the new members must ensure
07:32
true access to justice without conditions or persecution. The president also declared that as of September,
07:40
the new members must ensure an environment of honesty, truthworthiness and true access to justice.
07:47
In Mexico, Mixteco indigenous lawyer Hugo Aguilar is said to become the next president of the Supreme Court of
07:59
Justice and the first to be elected to be to that position by popular vote. The National Electoral Institute
08:06
reported in its latest update that 87% of the votes for the presidency of the country's highest court have
08:13
been counted. The lawyer, who was an advisor to the Zapatista movement, has almost 5 million votes,
08:20
compared to over 4.6 million votes for Lenny Abatres. This Sunday, Mexico successfully held elections for
08:27
nine ministers, 386 federal judges, as well as magistrates and state judges in 19 states.
08:43
In Colombia, it has been 50 days since the trial of former President Álvaro Uribe began for the alleged
08:51
crimes of witness tampering, bribery and procedural fraud. The defense summoned Samuel Arturo Sánchez
08:57
Cañón, who would now be willing to testify for his alleged participation in the bribery of the witnesses,
09:04
Carlos Enrique Vélez. They also summoned Darley Guzmán Pérez, alias Jopra, held in the Palmyra
09:11
Prison and two investigators of the Technical Party of Investigation of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
09:17
The agency is trying to prove that the former president is responsible for having sought
09:22
through emissaries, witnesses to favor him in other processes in which he was linked to paramilitary
09:29
groups. This trial, which marks a historic event by bringing a former president before a criminal court
09:35
as a defendant for the first time, started in 2012.
09:47
In Argentina, former president and leader of the judicialist party PJ Cristina Fernández de
09:53
Kirchner announced her candidacy for deputy for the third electoral section of the provincial elections
10:00
to be held on September 7th. She confirmed so on an interview in the Minuto Uno program. In this context,
10:07
Fernández criticized President Javier Milei and expressed her concern for the future of Peronism.
10:14
Thus, the leader attached importance to unity within the party. Likewise, she warned that a defeat in the
10:20
province could bring about revocations nationwide. In addition, the former head of state rejected
10:25
criticisms of her decision to run for a seat in the Buenos Aires legislature, arguing that politics
10:31
must be seen as an opportunity for collective triumph.
10:42
In Panama, increased violence over the past 31 days has set off alarms, with 50 people killed
10:48
during this time. Authorities registered 46 men and 4 women killed violently.
10:53
All among the provinces most affected are Panama with 19 homicides, Colón with 12 and the district of San
11:00
Miguelito with 9. Most of the victims were young people. Gunshot wounds and stab wounds are the most
11:08
common injuries, according to official reports.
11:23
In Russia, the government's investigative committee confirmed on Tuesday that the recent explosions in
11:31
Bryansk and the Kursk regions have left seven people dead and 113 injured were terrorist attacks
11:38
ordered by the Ukrainian regime. The investigative committee of Russia classified the facts of
11:45
explosions on railway sections and bridge structures in Bryansk and Kursk regions, which led to the derailment of
11:50
several civilian trains as terrorist acts. It is evident that the terrorists, acting on the orders of the Kyiv regime,
11:57
planned everything with maximum precision so that hundreds of innocent civilians would come under their attacks.
12:02
So, a 5.8-magnetal earthquake hit western Turkey and nearby Greek islands on Tuesday in early morning hours,
12:23
before a quake struck off the south coast of Crete. In the resort town of Marmaris, the ensuing panic left one
12:32
person dead and at least 70 injured. The European Mediterranean Seismological Center said the quake happened
12:39
at a death of 68 kilometers. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerliykaya said the deadly victim was a 14-year-old
12:47
child in the resort town of Fetille. The teenager was brought to the hospital but could not be saved.
12:54
Disaster management teams were deployed to assess the damage.

13:44
Welcome back to From the South. The United Nations denounced Tuesday that Israel
13:54
confined the Palestinian people to 18% of the Gaza Strip territory. The multinational
13:59
organization said that the confinement of the Palestinians to that 18% of the territory was
14:05
the result of the increasing military expansion of the Israeli forces who control the remaining area.
14:11
The organization also indicated that almost 200,000 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced in the
14:18
last weeks due to the continuous bombardments. It also accused the Israeli forces to attack a
14:23
humanitarian aid distribution point in Rafah where at least three Palestinians were killed and 35 others
14:30
injured.
14:38
Palestinian health authorities reported that Israeli occupation forces killed nearly 40 civilians in the
14:44
last 24 hours in the Gaza Strip. The Gas and Health Ministry said that deadly victims and the more
14:52
than 200 injured were at the humanitarian aid distribution center in Rafah. According to eyewitnesses,
14:58
Sionist troops attacked the area with artillery and warplanes while civilians waited for the delivery
15:04
of supplies. Palestinian health authorities reported that the Sionist troops have killed over 54,470 people
15:13
and injured more than 124,000, mostly women and children, since October 7, 2023.
15:21
They leave them in a courtyard that is around one to two hectares. They throw the goods there and the goods
15:35
that are placed there are not enough for roughly 2,000 people. While around 10,000 had gathered there,
15:42
that is what I saw, two-thirds of us went through at the risk of death. I swear, it's like we died 500 times in an hour.
15:49
I swear, there are martyrs left inside there that no one can reach. And I swear two-thirds of the people
15:56
who went inside left empty-handed.
15:57
I start heading out at 3 a.m. and get there, then get shot at. So I lay low on the ground between the
16:05
others. When I turned 5, 3 a.m., I raised my head back up, to see people walking out with eight boxes.
16:11
But what about those martyrs left on the ground? Until when will we continue to live in humiliation,
16:16
oppression, and hunger? I swear, I can't afford to buy a kilogram of flour that costs 40 shekels.
16:22
Where would I get it from?
16:29
On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragishi arrived in Beirut reaffirming the
16:34
Persian nation's support for Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli aggressions. Foreign Minister Aragishi
16:40
underscored that Lebanon's independence and sovereignty continue to bear much significance
16:46
for the Islamic Republic and the broader West Asia region by extension. The Iranian Foreign Minister
16:52
arrived in Lebanon's capital following an official visit to Egypt. On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes on a
16:58
residential building in Beirut's southern suburbs killed several civilians, including an official with
17:05
the country's Hezbollah resistance movement and his son. The Islamic Republic of Iran completely supports
17:17
Lebanon's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We condemn the occupation of parts of
17:26
Lebanon by the Zionist regime and support all efforts by the government and the people of Lebanon to
17:34
expel the occupiers by any means, including through diplomacy.
17:42
In other news, the United States moved forward with the withdrawal of its military personnel after
17:47
abandoning two strategic bases in the Syrian province of Deir Esor. Armored vehicles and trucks
17:53
loaded with logistical equipment departed from U.S. bases in Syria, including the Al-Omar oil field,
17:59
the largest in the country. After the withdrawal, the armed group Syrian Democratic Forces deployed to
18:06
the abandoned positions with the aim of controlling the area. According to the U.S. Department of Defense,
18:12
the plan is to reduce the number of troops to less than a thousand and close at least eight military posts.
18:18
In South Korea, with nearly 95 percent of ballots counted in the snap presidential elections,
18:30
Liberal Democratic Party's candidate Lee Jae-min-yoon is set to become the country's new president.
18:36
Precisely, Lee has obtained 48.85 percent of the votes, while his main challenger,
18:43
conservative Kim Moon-su won 41.99 percent. Nearly 80 percent of the country's 44.4 million eligible
18:52
voters cast ballots, according to an interim tally, which represents one of the highest turnouts for
18:57
a presidential election in the Asian nation. As vote counting is still underway, Kim has already
19:04
conceded defeat and congratulated Lee. For his part, Lee has told supporters that one of his main tasks is
19:10
ensuring a peaceful Korean Peninsula, going to pursue dialogue with North Korea. The winning candidate
19:18
will be thrown in on Wednesday for a single, full term of five years without the typical two-month
19:23
transition period.
19:26
I will find a path for South and North Korea to co-exist and achieve mutual prosperity through dialogue,
19:43
communication, and co-existence.
19:47
I will stabilize the Korean Peninsula as soon as possible in order to minimize the risk for Korea
19:53
Korea and make sure that people's livelihoods are not worsened because of the security in the Korean
20:06
Peninsula. While politicians may clash over interests
20:11
and draw lines between factions,
20:21
the people are not bound to follow those divisions.
20:26
People are the master of this nation and politicians are workers
20:31
who are responsible for people's lives. Political quarrels may not be avoidable,
20:42
but people don't have to be divided and hate each other.
20:49
Let's now learn a bit more on who Lee Jae-myung is. Lee hosted the previous presidential election to
20:56
Yoon Suk-yeol and then went on to lead the Democratic Party to a landslide victory in last year's parliamentary
21:04
election and was the driving force behind the opposition-led campaign to remove Yoon from office.
21:11
The human rights lawyer turned politician served as governor of South Korea's most populous
21:17
Gyeonggi province and major of Seonnam city near Seoul.
21:22
On the other hand, Lee faces five ongoing trials for corruption and other criminal charges.
21:28
Most of his ongoing cases have been postponed by the courts until after the election and he was denied
21:35
any wrongdoing, insisting the charges are politically motivated. If elected, he will be the first person
21:41
to take high office in South Korea while under active prosecution.
