00:56Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos. I'm from the Terrasour Studios in Havana, Cuba. We'll begin with the news.

01:18Este 25 de mayo, el pueblo de Venezuela vivirá otro ca...
01:21We'll begin with the information. In Palestine, the Israeli occupation forces have continued their aggression in the Gaza Strip, where in recent days, in a series of deadly attacks, at least 93 people were killed.
01:38The offensive targeted the Al-Adwa Hospital in north of the Palestinian territory, with tanks firing on buildings of the health center, including the specialized surgery department.
01:49In addition, earlier on Thursday, rescue teams recovered 13 bodies from under the rubble of two houses bombed by Israel in Javaliyah al-Balad, in the north of the Palestinian enclave.
02:01The number of Palestinians killed by the Zionist regime in Gaza since the onslaught of its offensive in October of 2023 has risen to over 53,600, while the number of wounded stands at over 121,950.
02:19The United Nations reported that it had gathered and shipped about 90 trucks of humanitarian aid inside the Gaza Strip in Palestine.
02:34The spokesman for the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, Estefan Dujarric, informed that on Wednesday, approximately 90 truckloads of supplies from the Karem Shalom crossing have been sent to the interior of Gaza.
02:49The government also confirmed that 87 truckloads of humanitarian aid have been delivered to various international organizations and to the civil association responsible for distributing to the population in various areas.
03:02Sources in the Palestinian region reported that the trucks that have arrived in Gaza throughout the Karem Shalom crossing have begun distributing flour to several bakeries in the Strip.
03:19Meanwhile, Israeli forces fired on a delegation of diplomats from Europe and Arab countries on Wednesday during their visit to Yan'in in the occupied West Bank.
03:28The army admitted that it fired shots in the air, however, they justified these as warning shots and that the visiting group had not followed the agreed route for the tour.
03:41Meanwhile, the Palestinian authorities maintained that the aim was to intimidate the officials.
03:46The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Galas, called for an investigation into the event.
03:53Separately, Spain, Italy, France, Turkey, and Belgium condemned the event and demanded an explanation from the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.
04:03In the United States, two Israeli embassy staff members were shot and killed on Wednesday in Washington, D.C.
04:14The deadly shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. local time near the capital Jewish museum in Washington, D.C., according to authorities.
04:23The Israeli Foreign Ministry named the two victims as Yaron Lechinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim.
04:31Paola Smith, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, stated that authorities had arrested a single suspect in the shooting,
04:38identified as Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old from Chicago, Illinois.
04:43Prior to the shooting, the suspect had been observed pacing back and forth outside the museum.
04:49He approached a group of four people, pulled out a gun, and opened fire, wounding both of the deceased.
05:02The preliminary investigation indicates that both victims were exiting an event at the Capitol Jewish Museum,
05:09located in the 500 block of 3rd Street Northwest, when the shooting occurred.
05:14We believe the shooting was committed by a single suspect, who is now in custody.
05:20Prior to the shooting, the suspect was observed pacing back and forth outside of the museum.
05:25He approached a group of four people, produced a handgun, and opened fire, striking both of our decedents.
05:33The preliminary investigation...
05:35We now move on to other topics in Australia.
05:48Floods caused by heavy rainstorms in the stage of the New South Wales have left at least three people dead and one missing.
05:56The body of a 60-year-old woman has been found in floodwaters on the NSW mid-north coast,
06:05bringing the death toll to three, with authorities still holding great fears for another person who is still missing.
06:12Earlier, emergency crews found the body of a man in his 30s as well.
06:16Another man, 63 years old, was found near the town of Tade, one of the area's hardest hit by the rainstorm.
06:24The regional commissioner of the emergency services, Michael Wassink, informed that the victim had asked for help.
06:31However, the rescue teams could not arrive in time.
06:34Authorities on Thursday called on the state's residents to remain prepared for an evacuation.
06:42How is Venezuela arriving?
06:44We've got an incredibly volatile situation.
06:47I said a few days ago that this will break some records, and these aren't the records that you want to break,
06:52but we've seen more rain and more flooding in the mid- and the north coast area than we've ever seen before.
06:58We've seen an impact that's affecting the tens of thousands of people.
07:03Now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tell Us for English,
07:07where you will find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
07:11We'll be right back. Stay with us.
07:12Welcome back to From the South.
07:31The government of Venezuela activated the Obedeton throughout the national territory with the objective of carrying out 130 works in 130 days
07:41and responding to the needs of the communities.
07:44The initiative is part of the policy of priority investment in strategic projects in social areas,
07:50such as the strengthening of health units with medical equipment and medicines.
07:54It also seeks the remodeling of educational centers and cultural spaces,
07:59the integral rehabilitation of the country's main road arteries, among other projects of interest.
08:06In this context, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro,
08:08toured the recovered and rehabilitated areas of the Eastern Maternal and Children's Hospital, Dr. Joel Valencia Parpacen,
08:16and reaffirmed the commitment with the guarantee of the right to health.
08:24We stay in Venezuela as the closing of the campaign of the governors and parliamentarians of the Great Patriotic Poll
08:32moves forward in Venezuela in view of the May 25th elections.
08:38On Wednesday, that campaign began in the state of Barinas,
08:41where the candidate for the governorship, Adán Chávez,
08:44was supported by the population ahead of Sunday's elections.
08:48Meanwhile, the candidate for the governorship of the state of Bolívar,
08:51Yulis Véz García, also carried out her campaign closing,
08:56while in El Vigía, state of Mérida,
08:58the closing campaign of the event for the candidate Arnaldo Sánchez took place.
09:04It is expected that in the next few days,
09:06the closing of the campaign for the Venezuelan parliamentary and regional candidates will continue.
09:11In other news, the Constitutional Court of Romania unanimously rejected on Thursday the requested file
09:23by former candidate George Simeone against the results of the May 18th presidential election.
09:29The leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians lost with 46.4% of the vote
09:36against the 53.6% obtained by pro-European Nico Sordán.
09:42Then on Tuesday, Simeone announced his demand for the annulment of the elections in court,
09:47citing interference from France as well as vote buying
09:51and the existence of a budget of 100 million euros allocated in Moldova.
09:57He alleged many citizens with dual nationality used to favor his opponent.
10:02The Constitutional Court unanimously rejected the request as unfunded,
10:06adding that its decision was final.
10:09Later on Thursday, Nico Sordán will assume the presidency of the country in a solemn ceremony.
10:15The acting president of the French Guyana Territorial Collectivity, Jean-Paul Ferreira,
10:26rejected the announcement by the government of France
10:28that it plans to build a high-security prison in the territory.
10:32The prison would have the capacity for 500 inmates
10:36and is intended to fight drug traffickers and Islamist prisoners.
10:40At a cost of 400 million euros, construction will begin soon,
10:45although there is no definite date yet,
10:48and the prison would open in 2028.
10:51France's strategy seeks to tackle drug trafficking
10:54in a key region of South American routes to Europe
10:57but generates local criticism for its impact.
11:00Critics compare this project to Nayib Bukele's anti-human mega-prison in El Salvador,
11:07questioning its impact on the region
11:09and its focus on housing high-profile criminals.
11:15The Shishan Autonomous Region of China celebrated the traditional Wangwu festival
11:32to welcome the next harvest.
11:35This event, which has more than 1,500 years of history,
11:41gathers the community to perform a ritual that includes dances, horsemen, and barley wine
11:47to wish for a bountiful harvest.
11:50This festival is celebrated when the crops are about to ripe,
11:53especially in the rural areas of the Yulanzangpo River and Lhasa.
12:00The dates of the festival can vary according to the region due to climatic variations.
12:05Therefore, the local monks are in charge of choosing an auspicious day for the celebration.
12:11On this day, families dress in festive attire and participate in a large procession.
12:16Everyone sings in praise for a successful harvest, surrounded by colorful flags and festive music.
12:30Senegal fills with art with a parade of giant puppets to raise awareness on climate change.
12:38This initiative, which is part of the Heard Project,
12:42seeks to raise public awareness on the dangers of climate change
12:45throughout a theatrical odyssey that begins in Kinshasa,
12:48the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
12:51The show incorporates more than 80 local artists
12:54in the creation of life-size puppets of animals such as giraffes and elephants,
12:59which parade through the streets of the city of Takara.

14:27Welcome back to From the South.
14:46In Argentina, the teachers organized in the National Historical Federation of University Teachers,
14:51Conadu, said for this week a 48-hour national strike to demand the reopening of bargaining negotiations
14:57and a salary increase.
14:59Meanwhile, the students will march on Thursday.
15:02This measure motivated the non-teaching staff to take the same measures
15:07but for 24 hours for this Friday.
15:09The students of the University of Buenos Aires are preparing for the mobilization of support
15:15that will take place this Thursday from Jose Square to the National Secretariat of Education,
15:21the classrooms where the country's future professionals are trained,
15:25mobilized with the firm decision to continue with the measures of struggle
15:30that had already begun last year against the first budget cuts.
15:35Also in Argentina, thousands of demonstrators mobilized this Wednesday in Tierra del Fuego
15:49during a general strike against the reduction of tariffs on cell phone imports promoted by President Javier Milei.
15:55The measure threatens the electronics industry of this province, which benefits from tax exemptions.
16:01The decree stipulates the reduction of tariffs from 16% to 8% in the fourth stage
16:07and from 8% to 0% for January 2026.
16:12The main trade unions grouped in the General Confederation of Workers
16:16and led by the Metal Workers Union are staging street demonstrations in the city of Ushuaia and Rio Grande
16:23as a protest against what they consider an attack against the way of life of the people of Tierra del Fuego.
16:31And the Argentine series El Eternauta, a story of an apocalypse in Buenos Aires due to toxic snow,
16:42has some singularities such as its message, its production and the relationship of its original author
16:48with the last Argentine civic military dictatorship.
16:51Our collaborator in Argentina, Aya Nessi, brings us the report.
16:55The Argentine series El Eternauta premiered on April 30th based on the science fiction comic strip
17:03created by Héctor Germán Oesterhead, who disappeared during the last Argentine civic military dictatorship
17:08along with his family except for his wife Elsa Sánchez de Oesterhead.
17:12In the tragic time of our country they removed my four daughters, my husband, my two sons-in-law
17:22and two grandchildren of whom I could never know anything
17:27because two of the girls were pregnant.
17:32To this day people are still demanding that those responsible say what happened and where they are.
17:37The series is directed by Bruno Estañaro and only a few days after its premiere
17:42it reached the number one position in non-English speaking views on the Netflix platform.
17:46Estañaro is an Argentine director known for other series reflecting different moments of the Argentinean
17:52economic and political crisis such as Pisa, Fidria and Faso and Ocupa.
17:57His career, like most of the actors, actresses, custom designers and technicians who participated
18:02in the super-production of El Eternauta, was forged through projects financed by the National
18:06Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts, which today is threatened with closure due to the
18:12funding and emptying by the management of Javier Milei.
18:27I am very happy it was made here, with the work of Argentines to tell and think about science
18:32fiction from our country and not as something from outside, for example from the United States.
18:37I am happy.
18:38El Eternauta takes up the Argentinean culture, language, customs, faith, musical variety locations
18:44and even the Maldivas war.
18:49This show is for me, as an Argentinean, a source of pride, almost as if it were the World Cup
18:54we won.
18:55And I felt like what we're going through now.
19:05All these things that are happening, that I don't like, then you identify how the whole
19:12system is now, with the new changes.
19:16While a cognitive battle that exacerbates individualism, dehumanization and personal salvation is being
19:22waged, the massiveness achieved by El Eternauta is a strong invitation to reflect on the human
19:27condition.
19:28In other news, hundreds of residents and miners marched on Wednesday in Trujillo, Peru, to demand
19:45greater security in one of the country's most crime-ridden cities.
19:48The peaceful protest took place 16 days after the murder of 13 workers at a gold mine in
19:55Patas.
19:56Some miners marched with white helmets as a badge and carried signs that read,
20:01no more death, no more crime and no more extortion.
20:0513 workers linked to the Poderosa Mine, one of the big mining companies in Peru, were found
20:10dead on May 4th in a gold mine shaft.
20:13Patas was declared in a state of emergency since February of 2024, due to the escalation
20:19of violence linked to gold mining.
20:27Organizations in Guatemala have denounced the murder of environmental defenders who systemically
20:31criticized the illegal extraction of natural resources in the Sierra de las Minas Biosphere
20:37Reserve.
20:37On May 9th, environmental defender Marco Antonio Zuleta Quevedo was attacked with a firearm.
20:44He had previously filed a complaint with the public prosecutor's office after receiving
20:49death threats via telephone.
20:51The Sierra de las Minas Biosphere Reserve denounced Zuleta's crime.
20:56It attributes it to people or groups with interests contrary to conservation and biodiversity who
21:02seek to exploit natural resources illegally and to the detriment of the Guatemalan people.
21:12And like this, we have come to the end of this news proof.
