00:50Hello, welcome from the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dersu Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:55We'll begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:09Colombian social and political groups continue for the second day a national strike in support
01:13of the referendum promoted by Gustavo Petro's government. Those mobilized carry out sittings,
01:18rallies, and diverse cultural events in support of the government and the popular consultation.
01:25During the day, an open town meeting will take place in Bogota at Bolivar Square,
01:29which is a constitutionally recognized process of debate among a group of citizens. The 48 hour
01:35national strike began on Wednesday with rallies in several of the most important cities of the country,
01:39such as Medellin, Cali, Barranquilla, Bucanamanga, Tunja, and Bogota.
01:44In this context, the 48 hour national strike aims to support the social reforms promoted by the
02:00government of Gustavo Petro. The strike action demands the approval of the popular consultation
02:05and denounces the actions of the oligarchic right wing that seek to stop political and social changes.
02:11According to the United Workers' Central, next June 11th, there will be another national
02:15strike accompanied by four big caravans to Cali, Medellin, Barranquilla, and Bogota.
02:20In Mexico, the electoral silence came into force ahead of Sunday's June 1st judicial elections.
02:34The National Electoral Institute reported that citizens may reflect on the direction of their vote
02:40during this time. In the next three days, authorities do not allow the holding of
02:44or broadcasting of meetings or public acts of campaigning. Citizens are summoned to the polls
02:49to elect positions in the Supreme Court of Justice, Magistrates of the Court of Judicial Discipline,

03:04Meanwhile, in Argentina, researchers mobilized at the Scientific Poll in Buenos Aires in rejection
03:17of the Javier Millet government's brutal adjustment of the national scientific and technological system.
03:23Multiple researchers mobilized in front of the scientific poll to express their rejection to the
03:28cuts and the lack of income at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council. In this way,
03:33they denounced that budget cuts, layoffs, paralysis of funds for laboratories, frozen salaries,
03:40and the dismantling of agencies and institutes promoted by the government led to a critical
03:45situation for CONICET and the Argentine scientific system as a whole.
03:56And in Peru, the Health Minister reported Wednesday that pertussis cases
04:01soared in the country in 2025. Florida is registered 12 deaths and 650 infections in what is
04:07considered the worst pertussis outbreak in the nation's history. Regions with confirmed cases
04:13are Loreto, Lima, Cajamarca, Cusco, Arequipa, Callao, and Tacna. In the Loreto region, nine people have died,
04:20mainly in the Tatem del Marañón, one in metropolitan Lima and two in Lampalleque. So far,
04:26most of the deaths have occurred in children aged zero to four years. The six children did not have
04:31the complete vaccination scheme. We now have our first break coming up. Remember you can join us on

04:47We'll be right back. Stay with us.
04:58Welcome back. The government of China condemned the decision announced on Wednesday by U.S. Secretary of State
05:14Marco Rubio to revoke visas for some Chinese students. The far-right politician claimed that
05:19these are Chinese students linked to the Communist Party or with studies in sensitive areas. The action
05:25adds to many others that have raised uncertainty among over a million foreign students. The U.S.
05:32Secretary of State also instructed all U.S. embassies to immediately suspend all student visa
05:37applications. In this regard, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maonin said the action disrupts normal
05:43people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
05:45The U.S.
05:52The U.S.
05:52unreasonably revoking the visas for Chinese students under the pretext of ideology and national security,
05:58severely infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and disrupts
06:02normal people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. China firmly opposes it and has
06:07protested to the U.S. over the decision. This politically motivated and discriminatory move exposes their hypocrisy
06:13over freedom and openness and will further damage the image and reputation of the U.S. itself.
06:20In the United States, a federal trade court on Wednesday blocked Donald Trump from imposing
06:24sweeping tariffs on imports under an emergency powers law. The ruling by a three-judge panel of the New
06:30York-based International Trade Court followed several lawsuits arguing that Trump had overstepped his
06:36authority, left U.S. trade policies subservient to his whims, and unleashed economic chaos.
06:42According to reports, the Trump administration has filed an appeal, and White House officials
06:46responded to the ruling with public statements questioning the court's authority in the case.
06:51On the other hand, financial markets applauded the ruling as the U.S. dollar following the
06:56court's order rules against currencies such as the euro, the yen, and the Swiss franc in particular.
07:02On Wednesday, Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Bob Gray described President Trump's
07:13offer for Canada to benefit from the Golden Dome project as mafia extortion. After stating that his
07:19country does not accept blackmail or bribes of any kind, Bob said on his social media that in certain
07:25contexts, Washington's proposal would be qualified as mafia extortion. The U.S. President announced that
07:31he would offer his northern neighbors free membership in the Golden Dome in exchange for Canada agreeing to
07:37become the 51st State of the Union. The Golden Dome is a highly contested project which several governments
07:44say will contribute to sparking a nuclear war.
08:07China has pledged to support Pacific Island countries in addressing climate change by implementing a hundred
08:12small but impactful projects over the next three years. This commitment was announced by Chinese
08:18Foreign Minister Wang Yi during the third China Pacific Island countries Foreign Minister's meeting
08:23held in Xiamen. The projects will focus on areas such as clean energy, fisheries, ocean protection,
08:29low carbon infrastructure, tourism, disaster prevention, and mitigation to help these vulnerable
08:35island nations enhance their climate resilience and sustainable development. The initiative aligns with
08:40China's broader Belt and Road Strategy and its commitments to South-South cooperation, emphasizing fairness and equity in global climate governance.
08:56And in Vietnam, the government warns of the importance of natural disaster prevention as
09:00the rainy season begins. Authorities register at least 29 dead or missing people since the beginning of
09:062025 in natural disasters. In a statement, Prime Minister Fan Minxin called on ministries to keep emergency
09:13personnel focused on responding to the risks and effects of heavy rains. Disaster management services confirmed
09:19that in 2025 landslides destroyed at least 67 houses and affected more than 2,300 other buildings.
09:26And in Peru, the second water summit held in Lima concluded with guidelines for the correct conservation
09:39and management of water to benefit the planet. A roadmap with guidelines applicable at the internal level
09:45according to the conditions of each country was described by the ministers of the environment order
09:50equivalents as historic and a solid commitment to the protection of water resources. The document,
09:56according to Juan Bello, Regional Director of the United Nations Environment Program, will be presented at
10:02four international meetings, including the Forum of Environment Ministers and the Seventh United Nations
10:07Assembly to be held in December of this year.
10:10Nicaragua is preparing with the National Interinstitutional Plan Safe Winter 2025 with the objective
10:24of protecting the lives of its population from meteorological phenomena. Kenia Doña with the details.
10:29According to meteorological reports, an active hurricane season is expected, with the possibility of up to 17 events such
10:43as tropical storms and hurricanes, some of them with the potential to reach categories 4 and 5.
10:50Taking into account the experience of previous years, the country is recognized as being vulnerable both
10:56directly and indirectly to these phenomena, so the national authorities have assured that they will remain
11:02vigilant and in a constant state of alert. From the country's point of view, conditions are neutral,
11:12but we are going to have a greater probability of cyclones in greater numbers and with greater frequency.
11:18The National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Response presented the plan to
11:30the National Assembly, highlighting a series of strategic axes that will strengthen institutional
11:36and community capacities to respond effectively to any meteorological emergency.
11:41The vital thing is the safeguarding of life, therefore all the protection mechanisms,
11:50health care, shelters, food must be ready, that is why these plans also start from each municipality,
11:57and it is the next step, that we are going to review critical sites municipality,
12:03by municipality, because it is fundamental.
12:08In contrast to the neoliberal governments, where in Menagua alone there were more than 130 critical
12:26points, points highly vulnerable to rains and floods, since 2007 the Sandinistic government,
12:31has directed the execution of multiple works, and mitigation projects, significantly reducing these risks.
12:42We have been reducing the critical points of the city of Menagua, every year we have been advancing,
12:47the exposed population has also been reducing, let's remember that it was a city that had 130
12:53critical points, more than 30,000 families living in critical points in Menagua, and that has been reducing.
13:00At this moment we are locating a little more than 2,000 families of 30,000 that there were,
13:06and critical points, we only have 52 of them, that we are still working on.
13:11As part of the preventive approach, multi-hazard exercises have also been carried out throughout
13:33the country to prepare the population on how to act and evacuate in the event of a natural disaster,
13:39thus reinforcing a culture of prevention and effective response.

14:17Welcome back. Since October 7th, 2023, the Palestinian Health Authority reported that 22 of the 38
14:46hospitals in the Gaza Strip had closed due to the Israeli aggression. The Ministry of Health of the
14:52Enclave stated that only around 30 primary care centers are operational and that 50 operating
14:58theaters and 25 oxygen stations have been destroyed. The institution specified that functioning centers
15:04lack 47 percent of medicines and 65 percent of medical supply. It also denounced the collapse of the
15:13health system due to the lack of fuel and aesthetic sterilization equipment and surgical tools.
15:27In this context, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that treatment for cancer patients
15:32had been suspended due to a shortage of medication caused by the Israeli blockade. The Ministry stated that
15:3811,000 cancer patients are experiencing catastrophic health, economic and social conditions. The Ministry also urged
15:46the international community to demand that the Israeli occupational authorities allow Palestinian patients
15:51to travel abroad for treatment and permit the necessary medication to enter the Gaza Strip.
15:56In Palestine, citizens reaffirm their opposition to U.S. presence in Gaza aid centers, stressing that
16:11Washington seeks to impose a control mechanism under military custody. Palestinians underline that Israel is
16:18trying to forcibly displace them from the north to the south. They also expressed their reluctance to travel
16:24to aid centers supported by the United States. In this regard, they emphasize that Israel seeks to exclude
16:29international organizations such as the U.N. Agency for Palestine Refugees, and that such plans link
16:35humanitarian aid to military objective in violation of the country's sovereign rights.
16:40Israeli occupation forces have arrested an estimated 17,000 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since
16:55October 7, 2023. The Palestinian Prisoners Club reported that a total of 537 women and more than 1,360
17:03minors are among the detainees. The organization pointed out that the arrests involve a high-level violence,
17:10including physical abuse, threats against the families, and vandalism. The Palestinian Prisoners Club
17:15also denounced the lack of hygiene and all kinds of torture inside Saronis prisons, where at least 70
17:22Palestinian prisoners have been killed since the beginning of hostilities in Gaza.
17:33And during a United Nations Security Council session in New York on May 28, the permanent representative
17:40of Palestine, Riyad Mansoor, broke down in tears while describing the critical humanitarian situation
17:46in Gaza. Visibly shocked Mansoor appealed for international aid in response to the tragedy affecting
17:52thousands of Palestinian children and families, describing the situation as unbearable for any normal
17:58people. Gaza has been facing a devastating war with Israel for more than a year and a half. The
18:04situation has worsened in recent weeks due to a blockade preventing the entry of food and medicine.
18:10According to the Gaza Health Ministry, more than 54,000 people have died. Mansoor denounced the indescribable
18:18suffering of his people and criticized the world's inaction.
18:22Mansoor denounced the indescribable
18:28of Israel.
18:33Since Israel broke the ceasefire in March,
18:40over 1,300 Palestinian children have been killed and around 4,000 have been injured.
18:49These are children. Children.
18:57And still a war against barbarism. Children doesn't.
19:06Children are dying of starvation.
19:11The only the images of mothers embracing their motionless bodies,
19:18caressing their hair, talking to them,
19:24apologizing to them.
19:30This is unbearable. How could anyone
19:35to make this sound?
19:37Excuse me, Mr. President.
19:49Fulobor Mansoor highlighted the global standards of the United Nations,
19:52calling out the organization for ignoring the massacre of Palestinians.
19:56And to ignore the obvious, the huge elephant in the room, the Palestinian people.
20:08Nothing can justify attacking civilians,
20:12whether Palestinians or Israelis.
20:16Double standards no more.
20:18We are human beings.
20:20We are proud Palestinians.
20:23We sit around this table.
20:26We should be treated exactly like everybody else.
20:30Not to see what you want to see in the mirror,
20:33and to ignore the obvious, the huge elephant in the room, the Palestinian people.
20:38In the United States on Thursday, students, faculty, and activists held a demonstration
20:47outside Harvard University's commencement ceremony to condemn Israel's genocide in Gaza.
20:53Demonstrators lined the sidewalk of Massachusetts Avenue in Boston,
20:56carrying flags and signs protesting U.S. support of Israel amid its genocidal campaign in Palestine.
21:02Organized by local branches of several larger pro-Palestine organizations,
21:07the mobilization also condemned Harvard's ties to the Zionist regime,
21:11and called on the university to end its repression of pro-Palestine speech,
21:15arguing Harvard is being complicit in Israel's policy of extermination by repressing voices,
21:21calling for an end to the genocide.
21:22That is, we are close to the end of this news briefs.
