00:00How is everybody this is a great way to spend a Tuesday right you guys rule we
00:16are here of course for Bush they have a new album they have a new album that's
00:21coming out on Friday called I beat loneliness put your hands together for
00:25Gavin Ross we go so far back with your band you told us in the studio once and I
00:47would like you to repeat it for the people here if you would the show that
00:51you played where the electricity went out and our program director Kevin
00:55Weatherly was in the crowd and you thought you had blown it yeah the power
01:01went out three times every time we got to a chorus it just cut out so we were like
01:05we'd come all the way from England thinking we got our big break and we'd
01:09heard this great thing about K rock and Kevin Weatherly put us on the radio and
01:13it's all exciting and so we played and then the power kept going out like not
01:18once but three times so I was in the backstage like going oh my god it's
01:23over it was that close close and he goes uh you're the real deal you're the real
01:30deal and I was like this guy he came back after seeing that yes and said you guys
01:34are the real deal he is usually not that bright and he's right over there give it
01:41up for Kevin Weatherly everybody yeah he got he I think it maybe was a good
01:46learning curve because ever since then the electricity anything to do with K rock
01:50has been perfect yeah sure actually K is kryptonite I would like to ask you a
01:57question about something that I found online that's really weird and I you were
02:02known as future primitive before Bush right right you did a song that I couldn't
02:07find last night no matter how hard I looked and it's called honky man child
02:11all right that's the song got us signed it's what that's the song what happened
02:16is the way that we got signed is um there was a show in England there was a week
02:21weekly show called the word it's really good music show and in the middle of the
02:26week they had the kind of review show and on that they had battle the bands and we
02:30sent our demo in and we got we played that song honky man child and that became
02:37like it's so weird and it was a that was that like it acted like a video for the
02:42guy that signed us in LA Rob Kahane he saw that yeah so we just and then we ended up
02:51weirdly we never did that song what was this song about honky man child yeah it's a
02:57really good question who knows it was a really good time I was living like Jim
03:01Morrison everything in my life was was based on what would Jim Morrison do so
03:06that's like a three tab of acid question no idea no memory of it but I know the
03:13riff it was brews very good it was it was a lively song I never know why we
03:18didn't carry it forward can you play it later today no okay I know how much money
03:24did you pay to have it scrubbed from the internet tell the truth oh it's okay
03:27because I really looked right yeah well amazing yeah we never we made a demo of it if I find
03:34the demo of it I promise you I will send it over to you it's not terrible it's just I guess
03:39not great it's just people go unless it's so cool we've discovered these lost records you know
03:46songs you never used it's like there's always a reason you know and the good ones float right
03:51out the top and then you got this like car boot sailor songs you failed on hey check it out
03:55so you're good to see that would go away all right well you know it's fine I remember this one because
04:02there's this really beautiful singer um polystyrene from a band called x-ray specs and I did a song
04:07with her called band the bomb and then one day I was listening we're gonna go through my stuff and I
04:11found it I thought I'd lost it and it was so cool and the verse was amazing and they just did it just
04:16there's some bit of it just failed to deliver it was like good not good then it was good
04:21so maybe if I edit that I'd be all right but you know sometimes things are best left in the memory
04:25like photographs yes exactly so tell us about your cooking show because that is fascinating I don't know
04:33any other rock stars that have a cooking show yeah uh good um well it's just it's um just a nice way
04:40to sit down and interview people and and you know I think that for well with you you give us a great
04:45voices here on the radio but you know traditionally musicians don't really get a chance to show who
04:50they are because I mean this is I began it try to get before podcasts now podcasts have changed it
04:55where you can watch someone drone on for two hours if you like to emulate but it used to be we always
05:00were we were edited out for whatever we said and I thought that I want to change that narrative a bit
05:05and so I thought well have a show and just be yourself and then make sure you're in the edit
05:10so you get that so they can't cut it out yeah so that's what it was but it's turned into this kind
05:16of really cool um uh journey into into interviewing these amazing people and getting an understanding
05:22of how they got there because I think it's good for people in these trying times it's really good
05:27for people to see that everyone has had to struggle it's not easy for anyone and all these great people
05:33I got on my show they not only do they uh struggle really hard to get you know against all the odds
05:38they still work really hard to get where they want to go and I think too much like now the message is
05:42just like the success without the process is forgotten and people are like oh man if it's
05:48take more than two weeks to get that together I ain't doing it you know right and it's okay to take
05:52that time is what it is was it different being on the other side of things and being the interviewer
05:58rather than being interviewed was that challenging yeah well I was like it was just fun to just delve
06:05into people's process how they did it and you find that all these different people that you talk to
06:09it was so weird because they actually um we're more similar than we then we realize you know you kind
06:16of think what am I going to have in common in common with the sort of you know common growing up
06:20there in Chicago Serena in in Compton Serena Williams but but you do yeah but you do see that
06:28that it's just everyone who was not in a way meant to make it and so it should give hope to people
06:33because on paper like life seems quite hard how to move forward and to make the right choices and
06:39so it's just a day-to-day thing and finding what you're good at and something you had told us when
06:45you came in studio was how there was certain foods that these people did not really like but you didn't
06:53find out about that until they actually arrived right well the whole thing was a learning curve
06:58right so um I started out asking questions about what people liked and then like Serena was the
07:03one because she just gave me like a list of five things but she failed to put in there like she
07:08put like chicken tacos fish cake and healthy I was like cake and healthy so I did like a weird like a
07:17deconstructed taco I think she liked with a bit of avocado and I made some tomato thing and she's like
07:21when we're walking through from one scene to another she goes by the way I really like that
07:25dish but I don't like tomatoes and I don't like avocado I was like oh my god so from there we
07:31changed the policy then because we were doing it ourselves of like now I was like can everyone
07:36just make sure they tell me what they don't like as well we need we're dislikes as well um that's kind
07:43of important yeah yeah yeah you don't want to find that out mid-show so you got the new album
07:48coming out on friday called I beat loneliness yeah and you were talking about everybody's creative
07:56process what is your process and how do you write a song is it usually the same do you start with
08:02chords do you start with words um well take that song for example so well there's a combination either
08:08I write uh on my own like I beat loneliness that song that I did myself or I write with make
08:14Chris might give me music uh work with Eric Ron Tyler Bates and and it's fun when I get the music
08:20because then I'm just like I feel like it's a bit of a holiday because I'm just doing the top line
08:24I'm just being Sia you know just she's amazing but I just mean that thing of like someone else does
08:30the work put the track together um but I think it's really important to do a couple of different ways
08:35so that it's something different in there as opposed to me doing every song or me you know it's just
08:40sort of changing it up and I always loved the David Bowie's it was you know he'd write a bunch
08:45of the records himself songs himself and then it'd be something you'd write with the producer or the
08:49some other musicians and that smattering of that so for me you know with the advent of studios and the
08:54way technology is you can really have a fun environment in which to write in on my own and then
09:01you know similarly it's really fun to get music in and just blast it in the car and drive and play so
09:06the more different ways the better for that particular song you wrote yourself did you come
09:11up with the title I beat loneliness yeah I had that right yeah it was it was really exciting because
09:16the the the kind of main feel of the song I was like I felt close to something good and um and I
09:22couldn't I was waiting when I write with other people I if I write in the room with him I write
09:27really fast um but if I write on my own I like to let the tracks kind of like you know like just
09:33play you know keep on loop walk around the house and um when I got that phrase I just thought oh
09:41man that's really gonna inform the whole record so and I thought that should be the title of the
09:45record or until I think of a better one and I never thought of a better one I have a better one
09:49it's 60 ways to forget people it's one of your songs on this album that's a pretty good title as well
09:55well I'm big on I'm big on loyalty you know so when people let me down um it's so upsetting you know
10:02so I just find it I I've never known if it's a curse to be um loyal or not you know sometimes
10:07they can get into trouble because you hang on to people that end up kind of biting you or or or is
10:13it a good thing I I believe in loyalty so when people um you know betray you feels like I don't know
10:20that song came about um speaking of songwriting I did see a quote from you and it was that you have
10:28constant self-doubts and bursts of confidence so that would make me normal that made me stand normal
10:36that would make me normal that mean I was standing normally isn't it do you have a time where you go
10:42I can't I can't what am I doing and then something comes through and you're like oh that was great
10:47so yeah regularly you know when you sort of write songs my process is that I have to
10:51beat myself up first and then once that once whoever wins that fight gets to write the song
10:57you had posted a video talking about how you know you always hear from your fans that they're so
11:05inspired by you um but in the video you're saying how big of an impact they have on you and do you
11:11feel like sort of what everybody's going through and with mental health that really helped inform the
11:16new album yeah the whole thing is based on that you know I I I sort of looked around and feel that
11:22life is really centered around um people's aspirations and we we look at social media and we we think
11:30we're kind of inadequate to the people we're following or they're having a better time there's
11:34that real sort of sense of FOMO and again going back to the thing I was talking about how people want
11:39instant success and instant thing so people get inevitably lost behind and ostracized or left you
11:45know feel they they fall off the grid and they they just they can't keep up and so I wanted to
11:50write a record so everyone knew that um it's difficult for all of us and if I wrote a really
11:56personal record about my own challenges I thought people would read that and just simply not feel
12:01alone that's it and then use the music as they see fit I have people here with music for so long and
12:07I think of you all the time when I write these records because I think of um the history I have with
12:14all these people Laura here she's been ever since the beginning and everything and so
12:17she wrote had one second bush the first ever website there was then you know of like incredible all the
12:24lyrics and all the songs and stuff I used to look up when I before the internet you know I had to look
12:29up sometimes her page of remember some lyrics I've forgotten if I remember lyrics you had to check out
12:34yeah yeah yeah one second bush uh just sometimes I'll be like what was that yeah what's that second
12:39verse because I'm good if I know the first line then I'm good for the song but if I don't have that
12:43first line there's so many songs that it gets really confusing like we mentioned I beat loneliness
12:48is the album that comes out Friday you're going to perform here are you good how many songs are you
12:52going to do from the album from the album there's two the single and I beat loneliness and trust me
12:59if it was up to me I'd play them all six new but I I get tempered by my my my crew
13:05and I saw uh the video on your socials doing a push-up contest with uh shine down and Morgan Wade
13:16right yeah so what was so what was that all about uh that was just a little bit of marketing fun we had
13:23a fun day and in some big estate in Tarzana and um Morgan really is into every morning 5 a.m
13:34wherever she is she goes works out she's super buff and strong I was like wow so and they had I
13:39cooked for them so the whole thing was a bit of workout Brent likes to work out he then had Morgan
13:45there and then I make made tacos and they had a few little we had a trainer um who would get us to do
13:53we had like a push-up competition and just dumb stuff like that you know and I would like to say
13:59that you kicked their asses so it's all the chopping I do it's all the chopping it's just
14:05just chopping when you shop like I can shop absolutely you can take on some some good push-ups
14:11and you are going on tour with shinedown so you'll be at the forum yeah Morgan yeah forum
14:18august 3rd you guys going to the show yeah are you guys ready to hear some music from bush

20:11Of many hearts
20:13Everyone is safe
20:17I try to sing
20:19As they will

23:24Hey!
23:50I'm ready to come out and get in, mate
23:54Gotta lose any blame
23:56This is a big one
23:58Blame it on cancer
24:01Try to do what you can
24:04Steady on suicide
24:07Everyone all the time
24:10My head playground
24:13What goes on
24:18This sadness is the emptiness
24:22With shadows in the rain
24:28She covered me in loneliness
24:33Like flowers on a grave
24:38Like flowers on a grave
24:43So stay in mind
24:49It's like a valentine
24:51Rubble around and make you mine
24:54I'm the one who's
24:57The animals won't move
24:59Tell what you're going to
25:02I can see you coming through
25:04Everyone all the time
25:08My head playground
25:11What goes on
25:15The sadness is the emptiness
25:20With shadows in the rain
25:25She covered me in loneliness
25:30Like flowers on a grave
25:35Like flowers on a grave
25:40Like flowers on a grave
25:43Like flowers on a grave
25:46Like flowers on a grave
25:48Like flowers on a grave
25:49I feel you in me
25:55Although your God has believed me
26:01I'm still alive
26:05I am alive
26:19The sadness is the emptiness
26:35With shadows in the rain
26:41Decovers me in loneliness
26:46Like flowers on a grave
26:51Like flowers on a grave
26:56Flowers, flowers, flowers, flowers
26:59Like flowers on a grave
27:01Like flowers, flowers, flowers, flowers
27:04Like flowers on a grave
27:07Thank you so much
27:12This takes us to the big part of the night
27:15We never played this song before, well it will be the first time we played this song that we're going to play many times, this is the title track for I Beat Loneliness, and so fun to play, I hope it's fun to listen to.
27:45Oh, come here to me, try to find the place where you'll believe, I'll wish you'd get love,
28:13all the fires around us run, all the bad weather, and in the ways that become undone.
28:24And when they came in, I'd be loneliness, like there's nothing left, we all fall down.
28:43Like some requiem, I'd be loneliness.
28:48Oh, I miss you so much, there's a violence between us I can trust.
29:15All the ways you reach me, all the ways I asked you to stop, said that you betrayed us, put me on a burning cross.
29:29And when they came in, I'd be loneliness, like there's nothing left, and we all fall down.
29:48Like some requiem, in a forbidden sign, I'd be loneliness, I'd be loneliness.
30:00I'd be so hollow, man, words of a dying man, I'm never even faked, man.
30:18Everybody lying, man.
30:21I'd be so hollow, man.
30:25I'd be so hollow, man.
30:27And the night came in
30:37I've been loneliness
30:40Like there's nothing left
30:44We all fall down
30:50Like some requiem
30:54El Forgotten Son
30:57And I feel alright
31:03I beat the internet
31:07I'm a civil man
31:11And I do not dance
31:17I've been loneliness
31:24I beat the loneliness
31:27I beat loneliness
31:36I beat loneliness
31:43We did it
31:56Ten records is pretty crazy
32:10Ten records is pretty crazy
32:11And it's pretty wild to be doing it here at K-Rock
32:14Because we say this a lot
32:16But it's important to recognize
32:17You know what I mean
32:18This band began at K-Rock in a way
32:20In many ways
32:21And they catapulted us into the entire world
32:24And so coming back full circle
32:26Ten records later
32:26Playing these songs
32:28Playing these songs for the first time
32:29It's a thrill for me
32:30So thank you so much
32:31Thank you for listening
32:32I'll be right back to you
32:32Thank you
32:32Thank you
32:32Thank you
32:34Thank you
33:08You're in control, not the government, not the government.
33:14Things changes, not the stops.
33:19Say what?
33:21Breathe.
33:23We are more than machines.
33:26We are because we feel.
33:29When everything goes down, it is how we come around.
33:33We are more than a dream, but this heart is made of steel.
33:39And I said I need you now.
33:41You are everything to me.
33:45More than machines.
33:47More than machines.
33:48Don't forget the code, let the wind blow.
34:03You can't be short of a window.
34:05Shame, bro.
34:06We know you've grown.
34:08Here is the news, in blood.
34:13Everything goes to be right.
34:15The earth dies.
34:17It's a money thing.
34:18It's a money thing.
34:20Nothing changes.
34:23Never stops.
34:26Say what?
34:28Breathe.
