00:00Tonight, we have breaking news just in. A partial verdict reached in the Sean Diddy Combs case.
00:05We'll go live to the courthouse. After just a day and a half of deliberating, the jury reaching this
00:09partial verdict in the Sean Combs case, what we've now learned at this hour, and Sean Combs'
00:15reaction in the courtroom. Eric Katursky is standing by the courthouse for us. Also at this
00:19hour, the dangerous storms and damaging winds across much of the Northeast. Flight cancellations
00:24in Washington, Philadelphia, New York City. A woman killed after an SUV collides with a down
00:29tree. Lee Goldberg timing out the storms tonight, and he has the Fourth of July weather for the
00:34nation. Tonight, President Trump's spending and tax cut bill passing in the Senate. The Vice
00:39President, J.D. Vance, with the tie-breaking vote, including cuts to Medicaid. More than 11 million
00:44Americans could lose their health insurance, roughly $4 trillion in tax cuts benefiting the
00:48wealthy, and estimated to add $3.3 trillion to the debt over 10 years. So Mary Bruce standing by,
00:54and what comes next? Tonight, a passenger arrested for allegedly attacking another passenger on this
00:59flight. Other passengers trapped, forced to witness the chaos. Tonight, the suspect to
01:04authorities say set a deadly trap for firefighters, and what we've now learned about the man.
01:09Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart has died, his ministry toppled by scandal. Millions, of course,
01:14will remember that tearful apology. The stunning upset tonight at Wimbledon, Coco Gauff out in the
01:20first round. Tonight, we also have news about Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson, his cause of death
01:25revealed tonight. And Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson are both here tonight. You don't want to miss this.
01:35From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
01:42Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a Tuesday night. We begin tonight with the
01:45breaking news in the Sean Diddy Combs trial. Late this afternoon, the jury telling the judge they have
01:50reached a partial verdict. They have decided on four of the five counts, telling the judge they are
01:55stuck on one of those counts, the racketeering conspiracy charge. The jury deliberating for just
02:00a day and a half and reaching this partial verdict, again, four of five counts. Their verdict not revealed
02:05at this hour because the judge telling them to keep going on that fifth count. The Combs trial went on for
02:10nearly two months with graphic testimony and disturbing sexually explicit images. Earlier today,
02:15the jury asking for a transcript from Cassie Ventura's testimony about this 2016 hotel attack
02:20captured on surveillance. She testified she was trying to escape when Combs assaulted her.
02:25The jury made up of eight men and four women. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
02:30Late today, the judge telling them to keep an open mind and to keep deliberating. ABC's chief
02:35investigative correspondent, Eric Kerski, he's live at the courthouse tonight and he leads us off. Aaron.
02:39After a day and a half of deliberations, David, we have an incredible cliffhanger here. A verdict,
02:46but no conclusion. A defendant who looked shaken and a jury told it's not done yet.
02:53Tonight, 13 hours into deliberations, jurors said they have reached a verdict on four of the five
02:59criminal counts against Sean Combs, but said they're stuck on the racketeering conspiracy charge,
03:04the judge instructing them to keep going. The eight man, four woman jury sent in notes,
03:08saying there are unpersuadable opinions on both sides. The note said the jury is prepared to
03:14release a verdict on the two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation
03:18for prostitution. When the note came in, Combs, who was denied all charges, looked stricken. He sat in
03:23a chair with his chin resting on his palm, defense attorney standing in a huddle around him. At one
03:28point, Combs wiped his eyes. His mother, sons and twin daughters sat stone-faced in the second row.
03:34Racketeering conspiracy requires jurors to find Combs led a criminal enterprise and agreed to
03:39commit at least two of eight underlying crimes, like arson, where prosecutors allege he jealously
03:44ordered the firebombing of rapper Kid Cudi's car, or bribery, where they say he tried to pay off a
03:49hotel security guard after surveillance cameras captured him attacking Cassie Ventura. The judge
03:54told jurors, I ask at this time that you keep deliberating. He reminded them of their duty to
03:59consult with one another and to deliberate with a view to reaching an agreement, adding they should
04:03not hesitate to change an opinion when convinced that it is erroneous. So let's get right back to
04:09Aaron Katursky live at the courthouse tonight. Aaron, again, as you've reported, the jury at this
04:13hour says it's reached an agreement on four counts, the charges of sex trafficking and transportation for
04:18purposes of prostitution. But again, as you have reported here, they are stuck on the racketeering
04:23conspiracy charge. So what happens now? And what are legal observers saying tonight, a day and a half
04:29in, a partial verdict on four of five counts against Sean Combs? What could this mean for Combs?
04:36Based on his demeanor alone, David, he didn't seem to think this is going very well for him.
04:41But there really is no way to know for sure. And it could cut either way, honestly, at this point.
04:48We do know there is consensus on four of the five counts. So the jury is working together.
04:54Maybe they're stuck on what it means to be part of a criminal conspiracy. The jury's going to come
05:00back, start fresh tomorrow, David, after more than 13 hours of deliberation so far. David?
05:06Aaron Katursky leading us off on the breaking news tonight. Aaron, thank you. In the meantime,
05:09we turn out of the dangerous storms, damaging winds across much of the Northeast late today and right
05:14into tonight. Flight cancellations and delays in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City.
05:19Powerful thunderstorms moving right up the I-95 corridor. More than 30 million Americans
05:23under severe weather threats, damaging winds and flash flooding ahead tonight. The storms have
05:28already turned deadly. Police say a woman was killed in an SUV that collided with a fallen tree.
05:33This is in Wilmington, Delaware. The storms tonight, just as millions travel for the fourth.
05:37Lee Goldberg times out the storms this evening and he has the 4th of July weather for the whole nation.
05:42And Stephanie Ramos on the images coming in now.
05:46Tonight, flight cancellations and delays increasing by the hour as powerful storms packing wind,
05:52hail and lightning target the Northeast for the second night in a row. Interstate 95 inundated
05:58amid a flash flood warning for Philadelphia late today. This is a reminder, turn around,
06:03don't drown. If you see water over the road, do not try to drive through it. White House flags
06:08rippling in the wind as the storms engulf the nation's capital. Overnight storms dumping half
06:14a foot of rain in parts of Pennsylvania, triggering a flash flood emergency in Lancaster County.
06:19And in Wilmington, Delaware, a 79-year-old woman was killed when a tree fell right in front of the car
06:25she was riding in. The driver swerved, but it was too late. Those storms also brought ground stops to
06:32most of the major Northeast airports on one of the busiest days to fly. Our Gio Benitez with teams
06:38from United Airlines early this morning as they tracked traffic in and out of Newark Airport.
06:43We are inside the United Operations Center here at Newark right now. It is very, very busy. More than
06:47half a million United passengers this week alone. And take a look. They are watching that weather very
06:53closely. With 300,000 flights scheduled nationwide, the FAA says this could be the busiest 4th of July
07:00holiday period in 15 years. And David, travel is a mess. More than 1,300 flights have been canceled.
07:08The most affected airports, D.C. Reagan, New York, LaGuardia, and right here at Newark. David.
07:13A lot of headaches. We see the lines there behind you, Stephanie. Thank you. Let's get right to
07:17meteorologist Lee Goldberg of our New York station, WABC. What do you see, Lee?
07:20David, I see storms circling New York City right now, but the severe staying to the south. We've had a rough
07:28afternoon evening in D.C. with trees knocked down. We've had flooding, still flood warnings in Philly
07:33and Baltimore. The severe thunderstorm watch until 9 o'clock tonight and ongoing flooding across parts
07:38of southern New Jersey. These storms for the next few hours can still produce some 70-mile-per-hour gusts and
07:43some flash flooding, especially across southern New Jersey, the Delmarva, and into eastern Virginia.
07:48Later on tonight, just some lingering showers. That'll move offshore. One more round of storms
07:52on Thursday, and the northeast gets a great 4th of July. That is not the case across Florida,
07:57unfortunately. A straddled front there, low pressure along it. Could be tropical. The next
08:02name would be Chantal, but regardless of named or not, you're looking at heavy downpours, potential
08:06flooding, and days of rain into the weekend. In terms of the 4th, dry in the southeast, dry in the
08:11northeast, but you're looking at heat building into the Midwest. Some showers from the northern
08:14Rockies to Texas. The west looks dry, but once again, for the Macy's fireworks, it couldn't be
08:19nicer. Low humidity, nice and dry, 80s by day, 70s in the evening hour. David, in the short term,
08:24just have to worry about a few more hours of storms in the northeast.
08:26All right. And then it clears. Thank you, Lee, very much. We turn now to the breaking news from
08:30Washington tonight. President Trump's spending and tax cut bill passing in the Senate. It was very close.
08:35Vice President J.D. Vance with the tie-breaking vote. The bill includes major cuts to Medicaid.
08:39More than 11 million Americans could lose their health insurance. It includes roughly $4 trillion
08:44in tax cuts benefiting the wealthy. And it's estimated it will add $3.3 trillion to the debt
08:49over 10 years. So what does it now face in the House? Here's Mary Bruce.
08:54Tonight, President Trump's sweeping bill slashing taxes for the wealthy and boosting spending for
08:59immigration enforcement squeaking through the Senate with a tie-breaking vote from the vice president.
09:05On this vote, the yeas are 50. The nays are 50. The Senate being evenly divided,
09:11the vice president votes in the affirmative. The bill as amended is passed.
09:16The bill features roughly $4 trillion in tax cuts, mostly for the wealthiest Americans.
09:21That will spur economic growth and more jobs and opportunities for American workers.
09:27It also fulfills the president's campaign promise to eliminate taxes on tips in overtime.
09:32And it includes deep cuts to Medicaid, which the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says will
09:37cause 11.8 million Americans to lose their health insurance over the next decade.
09:43The American people will not forget the betrayal, the betrayal that took place today.
09:50Three Republican senators voting no. Susan Collins of Maine, Tom Tillis of North Carolina,
09:55and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska delivering the deciding yes vote
10:01after negotiating an Alaska exception for some cuts to food stamps. She called her decision
10:06agonizing. Senator Paul said that this was, that your vote was a bailout for Alaska at the expense of
10:12the rest of the country. That's what Senator Paul said.
10:15And after a long pause. Do I like this bill? No. Because I try to take care of Alaska's interests.
10:32But I know, I know that in many parts of the country, there are Americans that are not going
10:41to be advantaged by this bill. I don't like it. But in Florida, where he was touring a new detention
10:47facility for undocumented immigrants, President Trump thrilled. The big, beautiful bill just passed.
10:53Oh, thank you. Wow. Thank you.
10:59Trump has repeatedly pledged he would not cut Medicaid. He now insists the cuts in the bill
11:04only target waste, fraud and abuse. Are you saying that the estimated 11.8 million people
11:10who could lose their health coverage, that is all waste, fraud and abuse?
11:13No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying it's going to be a very much smaller number than that. And
11:17that number will be waste, fraud and abuse. What number is that? What analysis are you seeing?
11:21I'm not seeing a number, but I know it's much less than the number you gave.
11:26And David, the president is also lashing out at Elon Musk, who's criticized the bill,
11:30which would eliminate the $7,500 tax credit for electric vehicles, which has benefited Tesla.
11:35Today, the president threatening to go after Musk using the very agency Musk himself created,
11:41saying perhaps it's time for Doge to take a hard look at his government contracts.
11:45As for the future of the bill tonight, it is now in the hands of the House,
11:48where it is already facing resistance from some Republicans. David.
11:52All right, Mary Bruce, I know you'll be watching it for us. Thank you.
11:55Next tonight, the suspect accused of setting that deadly trap for firefighters in Idaho and
11:59what we've now learned about the suspect. Matt Gutman is there again tonight.
12:02Tonight, ABC News has learned that the suspect in that deadly firefighter ambush in Idaho
12:07had a preoccupation with guns and Aryan and Nazi symbolism, according to a former classmate.
12:14Authorities say 20-year-old Wes Rowley ambushed firefighters at a popular trailhead in Coeur d'Alene
12:19on Sunday.
12:19Right now, there's an active shooter zone. They're shot.
12:22The shooter killing two firefighters, wounding a third before taking his own life.
12:27Investigative sources telling us the suspect grew up around guns in Arizona.
12:31And tonight, the suspect's former classmate, Dieter, who asked us only to use his first name,
12:36telling me the suspect had a passion for guns.
12:38He was very pro-gun. He would show us him shooting, whatnot, like send us videos.
12:44And Dieter also says that Rowley had gotten in trouble in high school for drawing swastikas in textbooks.
12:49You're saying he had an affinity sort of for the Aryan race?
12:53I would say yes, for the Aryan race, for Nazism.
12:56And tonight is that wounded firefighter, Dave Tisdale, fights for his life, the community coming together.
13:04David, officials tell me they've largely contained that fire.
13:06They've begun to process that scene.
13:08They also say nobody saw this coming.
13:11The suspect had no criminal history.
13:13They've now gotten into his phone working on that.
13:16They've also been poring over his social media.
13:18They found no links to any extremist organizations.
13:21All right, Matt Guppin in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, tonight.
13:24Matt, thank you.
13:25We learned today televangelist Jimmy Swaggart has died.
13:27Swaggart with millions of followers in the 1980s and 90s until his fall from grace.
13:32His confession after being defrocked for what the church called moral failure, seen by millions of Americans.
13:38I have sinned against you, my Lord.
13:42Swaggart never stopped preaching the gospel tonight.
13:44This post from the family of Jimmy Swaggart.
13:46I have fought a good fight.
13:47I finished my course.
13:49Jimmy Swaggart was 90.
13:50When we come back here tonight, we have news this evening about Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson.
13:55His cause of death has now been revealed.
13:57Also, Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson are here.
13:59You won't want to miss this.
14:00And the alarming images tonight.
14:01A passenger has been arrested for allegedly attacking another passenger on this flight.
14:06The other passengers trapped, forced to witness the chaos in a moment here.
14:09Next tonight, a New Jersey man has been arrested after allegedly attacking another passenger.
14:20The Frontier flight had just landed in Miami on Sunday.
14:23The two trading blows as other passengers watched.
14:26The video now emerging.
14:27Authorities say the man who was attacked was not hurt.
14:30The alleged attacker was taken to the hospital and then booked on a battery charge.
14:34When we come back here tonight, the stunning upset at Wimbledon for an American star and Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson are right here tonight.
14:41To the index of other news tonight, and we have now learned the cause of death for Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson.
14:46Wilson died June 11th at the age of 82.
14:49USA Today now reporting tonight that he experienced several minutes of respiratory arrest.
14:53Other contributing causes listed were sepsis and a bladder infection.
14:57He was cremated and buried in a cemetery in Southern California near UCLA.
15:01French Open winner Coco Gauff is now out at Wimbledon, losing in two sets to an unseated Ukrainian player.
15:07It's the second time in three years the number two ranked Gauff has been knocked out at Wimbledon in the first round.
15:12But of course, with that French Open win under her belt.
15:15When we come back here tonight, Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson are both here tonight.
15:19A personal note.
15:21Finally tonight here, a personal note about someone we will miss here at ABC News.
15:26There she is right there.
15:29The one person who is here every night who you don't see.
15:32Michelle Mayer has been standing right next to that camera,
15:35cueing me and so many other anchors, Peter, Charlie, Diane, for decades.
15:41She's been at ABC News for more than 30 years.
15:43And if you look closely, this wide shot of the studio before we go on,
15:47the camera pans, Shelly, with her hands on her hips.
15:50And I always call out for her.
15:52Shelly.
15:53And then, as Michelle knows more than anyone, in these chaotic times,
15:57right before we go on, our joke, I triple check we know what day it is.
16:01It's good to have you here on a Wednesday night.
16:04Wednesday.
16:05Michelle started as a prompter operator for Peter Jennings back in the mid-1990s.
16:09And then stage manager.
16:11Peter on his way to the studio there.
16:13Shelly on set there in the background, ready for him.
16:15She would travel with Peter to Hong Kong, the conventions, to Cuba,
16:19working with Charlie Gibson when he became anchor.
16:21She always knew that Charlie would walk up those stairs to the studio at the last minute.
16:27And then she was there for Diane Sawyer, her partner behind the scenes while Diane was on the air,
16:32guiding her as she has guided us all.
16:34And on this night when we now say goodbye, Diane wanted to make sure that everyone watching at home
16:39knows about the person we all count on behind the camera.
16:43I just want all the wonderful people who watch world news to know that when you're watching
16:49the person sitting at this desk, you're really also watching the coach behind the camera.
16:55Michelle, always there to say, move it along or slow it down or time to get out.
17:02Or in my case, she had signs printed up most often.
17:06And when Shelly says, sit up straight, you do.
17:10And when we reached out to Charlie to ask if he wanted to share a word or two about Michelle,
17:15his answer was, of course, yes.
17:18The first night the show was mine, not just filling in for Peter.
17:21I came into the studio and Michelle said to me,
17:24there may be some people around here a little bit afraid of you.
17:27I'm not.
17:29I'm the person who will tell you what to do.
17:30And she did in the nicest way for four years.
17:35She calls us all her anchors, from Peter to Charlie to Diane.
17:39And how lucky am I, more than a decade now, as my partner.
17:43But she says the time has come to catch her breath back home in Kentucky.
17:47I am still in denial about all this.
17:50I cannot believe that Shelly is leaving my partner in crime out there.
17:53She's the one who's cuing me every single night, standing next to that camera.
17:56But Shelly, only for you.
17:58Tonight, I hope you'll notice that you're going to see my cuffs.
18:01The only reason anyone ever sees cuffs is because Shelly's always saying, pull your cuffs.
18:06My watch, I've got my watch on, because Shelly likes when I show up with my watch on.
18:09It only happens like once or twice a year.
18:11I've got a full suit on today, only for you, Shelly.
18:13As you know, usually jeans from the waist down behind that desk.
18:17But for you, the full suit, because I know you don't dig the jeans.
18:20And I've got a haircut.
18:22I've got a haircut for you, Shelly.
18:23And Diane had a message on their shared love of home.
18:27We were just two Kentucky girls who got to the big city.
18:31She was hilarious, and you needed a laugh.
18:34And most of all, she is and always will be a person who cares passionately about what we do.
18:41And Michelle, that passion, helping us all be the best we can be for so long, this moment is yours.
18:47You deserve this, Shelly.
18:49Go home to Kentucky.
18:50You'll be back with your family and the horses and the beautiful countryside.
18:55And what an 11 years this has been with you by my side.
18:58I don't know what I'm going to do.
18:59You will be missed, but you've set the bar.
19:02We'll be pulling down our shirt sleeves and sitting up straight for years to come.
19:07Because we know if we don't, we'll be hearing from someone in Kentucky.
19:10All right, so let's show her.
19:13She doesn't let me do this.
19:14But on the last night, let's show Shelly over here cueing me off the air.
19:17How many seconds do I have left?
19:18Three?
19:19We love you, Shelly.
19:20Good night.
