02:22From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:30Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a very busy Thursday night.
02:33We'll have more on this break-in at actor Brad Pitt's home, smashing their way in.
02:36The latest in a series of high-profile break-ins.
02:39We're live on the scene.
02:40But we do begin tonight with these severe thunderstorms.
02:42The watch right now for New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C.
02:45Storms moving in just as the heat moves out.
02:48There is also a tornado watch in the Midwest.
02:50At this hour, the radar showing the extreme weather, that severe storm watch in the east,
02:54and the tornado watch for several states right in the middle of the country.
02:58In fact, remarkable scenes already.
02:59This is Largo, Florida, a tornado lifting this home right up off its foundation in the air for a time.
03:05And it tips over on its side.
03:07That home remarkably comes back down.
03:09A 76-year-old woman inside the home.
03:12She survived this.
03:14And a tornado in southern Minnesota, one of 15 reported tornadoes already.
03:18And in the northeast right now, this severe thunderstorm watch.
03:21Lee Goldberg standing by live with the forecast.
03:23And Stephanie Ramos with the remarkable images coming in tonight.
03:26Tonight, after tornadoes lifted homes into the air and tore across farmland, powerful storms
03:32again on the move, firing up in the northern plains.
03:36And you can see where the green skies.
03:39Sirens sounding outside our Rochester, Minnesota affiliate as KAAL's Robin Wolfram broadcast live.
03:45And of course, we're under a tornado warning.
03:48We want you to be safe.
03:49Be sure to get to your basements.
03:53Take cover.
03:55Overnight, a massive tornado southwest of Rochester tearing across Heartland, Minnesota.
04:00Watch as it crosses this road right in front of drivers.
04:05And in Largo, Florida, west of Tampa, unbelievable video from a security camera in the Renterro Village
04:11retirement community.
04:12The tornado lifting that home all the way up, hanging in the air, before it comes crashing
04:18back down to the ground.
04:21Authorities say a 76-year-old woman was inside at the time, miraculously surviving.
04:27Authorities say at least 50 homes were damaged in the area.
04:30And David, as those storms make their way into the northeast, the temperatures are plummeting.
04:34Here in New York City, yesterday afternoon, it was 96 degrees.
04:38Today, upper 60s, nearly a 30-degree difference.
04:42David.
04:43We'll take the change.
04:44Stephanie Ramos with us tonight.
04:45Steph, thank you.
04:46Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg of WABC back with us tonight.
04:49A big change indeed, but it does come with some really unsettled weather these next few hours.
04:55Yes, David.
04:56Storms just 90 miles to our south.
04:58In Philly right now, some severe thunderstorms closing in on the city.
05:02It's been midsummer extreme heat to mid-May temperatures in parts of the northeast.
05:06And that's why you have this potent front causing big storms.
05:09Severe thunderstorm.
05:10Watch from Philly to D.C.
05:11These storms could produce 60-mile-per-hour gusts, maybe even some quarter-size hail.
05:15They'll diminish in the evening hours.
05:16A tornado watch in similar places we saw yesterday near Rochester over into La Crosse, Wisconsin.
05:22That's Rochester, Minnesota.
05:23So these storms wind down, but there's still a lot of heat from the Mississippi to the mid-Atlantic,
05:27even an extreme heat warning in West Virginia.
05:29Triple-digit heat from Memphis to Nashville all the way to D.C.
05:33Now, that cool pocket is very strong over the northeast.
05:35It will tone down some of this heat.
05:37Look at what's going on.
05:38A massive drop in Boston and New York.
05:40Barely 70 tomorrow.
05:41It'll warm up again over the weekend, but not to the degree that we just saw.
05:44David?
05:45Lee, we always appreciate it.
05:47Now to the other news this Thursday night.
05:48Just in, news of a break-in at the L.A. home of actor Brad Pitt.
05:51Police say the suspects scaling the wall, smashing their way in, and what was done inside the home.
05:56This is the latest in a series of high-profile break-ins.
05:58This time, it happened while Brad Pitt was known to be away promoting his new movie.
06:03Trevor Alt is on the scene for us.
06:05Tonight, Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt is the latest celebrity victim in a string of brazen home burglaries.
06:12Law enforcement sources tell ABC News police responded to a call at the actor's home around 10.30 last night.
06:18They say three suspects scaled a fence to gain entry to the yard, then smashed through a front window.
06:24Pitt was not home at the time.
06:26The star has been on the road promoting his new movie, F1, seen here at the London premiere earlier this week.
06:32Police say the suspects ransacked the star's home with an unknown number of items taken.
06:38Investigators are now searching for any surveillance video from the home and the area.
06:42The break-in is the latest in a series of alarming crimes at the homes of Hollywood's biggest stars.
06:48Just last month, police say a man smashed his vehicle through the gate at Jennifer Aniston's property while the actress was home, and he was detained by private security.
06:57Nicole Kidman's house was burglarized in February, and Tom Hanks was victimized last year.
07:03And, David, this is the gate that police say these suspects scaled to get up to the house.
07:07It's not clear if Brad Pitt was targeted here specifically or if they simply thought this was just another luxury home.
07:13David.
07:13The latest in a series of break-ins. Trevor Ault on the scene for us tonight. Trevor, thank you.
07:18Now to the remarkable images. The mystery fireball over multiple states.
07:22Calls to 911 in several states, in fact.
07:25Some drivers startled by a bright light streaking across the sky.
07:28Some reporting shaking and hearing a boom.
07:30Was it a meteor or space junk?
07:32What the National Weather Service is now saying tonight.
07:34A piece of it came crashing through someone's roof, cracking the floor inside their home.
07:39Here's ABC's Victor Akendo.
07:40Tonight, this stunning sight caught on cameras across the southeast.
07:44A bright white fireball streaking across the sky.
07:48Part of it crashing down to earth.
07:50Witnesses from Georgia, North and South Carolina, Virginia, and as far west as Tennessee reported sightings around noon.
07:57911 call centers inundated.
08:00Some hearing a loud boom, saying they even felt shaking and thought it was an earthquake.
08:05Late today, the National Weather Service, saying it appears either a meteor or space junk, crossed the skies of North Georgia.
08:12Emergency officials in Henry County, Georgia, outside Atlanta, believe a piece of that object may have crashed through a resident's roof, smashed through the ceiling, before cracking the floor.
08:22You can see the hole and the damage left behind.
08:25Catherine Farr capturing it on dash cam video while driving down I-85 in Anderson County, South Carolina.
08:32That ball of fire falling in clear blue skies.
08:36I think it's just like a once-in-a-lifetime experience, you know.
08:39It's really, really cool to see, but just definitely out the ordinary.
08:42David, while it was a startling sight for sure, thousands of meteorites hit earth every year.
08:49No injuries reported tonight.
08:51David?
08:51But can you imagine that family that came right through the roof of that home?
08:54Victor Akendo tonight.
08:55Victor, thank you.
08:56Next tonight here, the U.S. strikes on Iran and now this heated debate over the damage from those attacks.
09:01Tonight, the Pentagon with new details.
09:03And the Defense Department also revealing they'd been studying this plan of a possible strike on Iran for 15 years.
09:10Now saying those 30,000-pound bombs exploded exactly as planned.
09:14Tonight, President Trump now insisting Iran did not remove its enriched uranium,
09:18even though early intelligence indicated much of it might have been moved.
09:22While Iran's Supreme Leader tonight is saying the White House is exaggerating the damage at those nuclear sites.
09:28Here's Rachel Scott.
09:29Tonight, the Trump administration dispatching the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
09:35to pump up the President's claim that the U.S. strikes obliterated Iran's nuclear program.
09:41Secretary Pete Hegssef angrily dismissing an early Pentagon intelligence report
09:45that sources say indicates the attack only set back Iran's program a few months.
09:51Anyone with, you know, two eyes, some ears and a brain can recognize that kind of firepower
09:57with that specificity at that location and others is going to have a devastating effect.
10:02Hegssef and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Cain insisted recent intelligence assessments
10:07show the sites were severely damaged, but offered no new evidence or intelligence
10:11to indicate Iran's nuclear program was in fact destroyed.
10:16Cain saying that's a question for America's spy agencies.
10:19Instead offering new details about the intricate attack,
10:22he says had been discussed and strategized for 15 years over the course of several administrations.
10:28The weapons were built, tested and loaded properly.
10:32Two, the weapons were released on speed and on parameters.
10:38Three, the weapons all guided to their intended targets and to their intended aim points.
10:43The general adding the massive bunker buster bombs exploded exactly as planned.
10:47We know that the trailing jets saw the first weapons function and the pilots stated,
10:53quote, this was the brightest explosion that I've ever seen.
10:57It literally looked like daylight.
10:59The early intelligence report indicated Iran removed much of its stash of near weapons
11:04grade uranium before the strike.
11:06Today, the president insisting that's not true.
11:08Posting nothing was taken out of facility would take too long,
11:12too dangerous and very heavy and hard to move.
11:15And tonight, new questions about the president's claims that Iran and the U.S.
11:19would be meeting next week.
11:20We're going to talk to them next week with Iran.
11:25We may sign an agreement.
11:26I don't know.
11:27To me, I don't think it's that necessary.
11:29But today, the White House press secretary says there is no meeting on the books.
11:33We don't have anything scheduled as of now.
11:35What is the hold up here in trying to schedule it?
11:37Are you experiencing any resistance from the Iranians?
11:40No, have some patience.
11:42It's true.
11:42And today in Iran, the supreme leader sounding defiant in his first public statement since
11:47the attack, claiming the U.S. failed to achieve anything significant and adding Trump, quote,
11:54grossly exaggerated.
11:56Today, the head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog said Ferdow, which is Iran's most important
12:01nuclear facility, suffered enormous damage and it was no longer operational.
12:06But they stopped short of saying that it has been completely obliterated, as President Trump
12:10has suggested.
12:11David.
12:12Rachel Scott on this all week for us.
12:13Rachel, thank you.
12:14Here in New York City, the prosecution's closing argument against Sean Diddy Combs today telling
12:18jurors it was all a climate of fear.
12:21What the defense now plans to say in its closing argument.
12:24And jurors could get this case tomorrow.
12:27Here's Aaron Katursky.
12:29Tonight, after a sprawling seven-week case, federal prosecutors tried to tie together all the
12:33evidence against Sean Combs, telling the eight-man, four-woman jury it's time to find the defendant
12:38guilty.
12:39His mother, twin daughters, and sons filing into the courthouse, where prosecutors delivered
12:43a nearly five-hour summation saying Combs used power, violence, and fear to get what he wanted
12:49and forced two women, Cassie Ventura and an ex-girlfriend known by the pseudonym Jane,
12:54to have sex with male escorts while he watched, directed, and filmed.
12:58Jurors saw graphic footage of those encounters and heard gripping testimony about hundreds of them.
13:03But today, a prosecutor said one single freak-off is enough.
13:07You only need to find the elements of sex trafficking are met on one occasion.
13:11Combs has denied charges of sex trafficking, transportation for prostitution, and racketeering
13:15conspiracy.
13:16Prosecutors pointing to allegations of arson, drugs, and the bribery of a hotel security guard
13:21following this 2016 assault of Cassie Ventura as proof Combs ran a criminal enterprise with
13:26a cadre of loyal lieutenants.
13:28It's his kingdom.
13:29Everyone was there to serve him.
13:31Defense attorneys will deliver their closing arguments tomorrow.
13:34David, they called no witnesses during trial, instead arguing Cassie Ventura and Jane were
13:39not trafficking victims, but long-term girlfriends who willingly took part in Combs' polyamorous
13:45lifestyle.
13:46David?
13:46Aaron Katursky has been covering this trial for us.
13:48Aaron, thank you.
13:49We turned now to the Supreme Court decision today, boosting efforts to defund Planned Parenthood.
13:54The conservative majority ruling that South Carolina can block the women's health clinics
13:57from Medicaid, cutting off funding even for non-abortion services, including contraception
14:02and cancer screenings.
14:03Other states could now do the same.
14:05Tonight, a special honor for the Army Rangers of World War II.
14:08House Speaker Mike Johnson presenting the Congressional Gold Medal to five Army Ranger veterans still
14:13alive.
14:14Only two were there to make the ceremony to accept.
14:17Five in all remained from the 6,500 Rangers who served.
14:20Speaker Johnson saying they were all ordinary men called to extraordinary valor.
14:25When we come back tonight, the end of an era at Vogue magazine, longtime editor-in-chief
14:29Anna Winter reveals she's stepping down, what she plans to do now.
14:32Also, we remember a famous composer behind so many iconic movies, Dirty Harry, Cool Hand Luke,
14:38Mission Impossible.
14:39We'll go back and listen tonight.
14:41And this evening, look at this, the terrifying moment, a worker to lift a bucket truck right
14:44there when an 18-wheeler smashes into the truck, the worker then dangling in his harness.
14:49Wear this plate out here in a moment.
14:53Next tonight, a terrifying incident in Denham Springs, Louisiana, outside Baton Rouge.
14:57Dashcam video showing the moment a worker in a bucket truck is hit by a tractor trailer left
15:02dangling in his harness.
15:03Police say the worker received only minor injuries.
15:06The driver has not been cited so far.
15:07The incident is under investigation.
15:10The NFL tonight suspending former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker for the first 10
15:14games of the season.
15:15The league saying he violated the NFL's personal conduct policy.
15:19Tucker, the most accurate kicker in the NFL, released by the Ravens last month after he
15:23was accused of sexual misconduct by 16 massage therapists.
15:26He has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
15:28Tucker is currently a free agent.
15:31When we come back here tonight, the end of an era at Vogue magazine.
15:34Longtime editor-in-chief Anna Wintour announcing she is stepping down, why and what she plans
15:39to do next.
15:40And tonight we remember a legendary journalist, a press secretary.
15:43He was right there on Air Force One the moment LBJ was sworn in.
15:47To the index of other news tonight, and a passing to note tonight, legendary journalist and President
15:54Lyndon Johnson's press secretary, Bill Moyers, has died.
15:57Moyers was Johnson's closest aide with him on Air Force One, when he took the oath of office
16:02after the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas.
16:05He did resign from the White House, though, at the age of 32 in a break with LBJ.
16:09The two never reconciled.
16:11Moyers, who then became an ordained minister, moved to journalism, first at CBS, later at PBS,
16:15exploring issues including poverty, violence, racism, threats to the Constitution, and climate
16:21change.
16:21Tonight, Moyers' son says he died after a long illness.
16:24Bill Moyers was 91.
16:26Tonight, the end of an era at Vogue magazine.
16:28Longtime editor-in-chief Anna Wintour is stepping down from her role as U.S. editor-in-chief.
16:33Vogue says she will still oversee the global publication.
16:36The search is on tonight for a new head of U.S. editorial content.
16:39Wintour began her career at Vogue in 1988.
16:42A profound impact there.
16:43When we come back on the broadcast, we learn late today the loss of a famous film composer.
16:48From Mission Impossible to Cool Hand Luke to Dirty Harry.
16:51We'll listen to his music in a moment here.
16:55And finally tonight here, we learn late today about the loss of a famous film composer.
16:59His work helped define a generation of movies.
17:02From Mission Impossible to Cool Hand Luke to Dirty Harry.
17:06Tonight, his work and the profound impact over many decades.
17:09He was behind some of the most iconic Hollywood music of a generation.
17:19With just a few notes, you could name it.
17:26The Mission Impossible theme.
17:31Written by composer Lalo Schifrin, playing it live right here on the piano.
17:35The soundtrack becoming a bestseller in 1968 and the theme reaching number 41 on the Billboard Pop Charts, earning two Grammys.
17:53A generation later, the song would come back from the Mission Impossible movie series with Tom Cruise.
18:07Originally from Argentina, Lalo Schifrin was a pioneer, weaving jazz and rock to compose film and TV scores.
18:14Composing the score for Cool Hand Luke with Paul Newman in 1967.
18:17Composing for Bullitt with Steve McLean in 1968.
18:28And for Dirty Harry with Clint Eastwood in 1971.
18:34Decades of music, dozens of movies and more than 40 TV movies and miniseries.
18:41We've learned late today Lalo Schifrin has died of complications from pneumonia.
18:45He was 93.
18:46In November of 2018, he became only the third composer to ever receive an honorary Oscar.
18:53Tonight, Lalo Schifrin, in his own words.
18:56Composing for movies has given me a lifetime of joy and creativity.
19:02Receiving this honorary Oscar is a culmination of a dream.
19:06It is a mission accomplished.
19:08Mission accomplished.
19:11Mission accomplished.
19:12One of our favorites, by the way.
19:13The incredible body of work.
19:14Cool Hand Luke, Bullitt, so many movies.
19:17Something to watch over the next few days.
19:18I'm David Muir.
