01:54You won't believe what happened.
01:59From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:07Good evening, and it's great to have you with us here on a Monday night.
02:09We do begin tonight with what authorities are now calling a deadly ambush.
02:12They say firefighters were lured into a deadly trap.
02:15Two firefighters were killed in Idaho.
02:17A third critically wounded.
02:18Police say they were lured into that trap by a sniper who intentionally set a wildfire
02:22and then waited for first responders to arrive.
02:25The sheriff says gunfire erupted just as those firefighters pulled up,
02:28saying these firefighters did not have a chance.
02:31Chilling radio calls tonight coming from the firefighting team under fire.
02:35Authorities launching an urgent manhunt.
02:37The suspect identified as 20-year-old Wes Rowley.
02:39His body was found with a weapon nearby.
02:42Tonight, agencies from across the region in a procession for the fallen firefighters.
02:46And what authorities revealed late today in this case.
02:49ABC's Matt Gutman leading us off tonight from Idaho.
02:52Tonight, authorities say the suspect who lured firefighters into that deadly ambush in Idaho
02:57may have dreamed of one day becoming a firefighter himself.
03:00There is information that we've received that he at one time wanted to be a firefighter.
03:05Late today, authorities identifying the suspect as 20-year-old Wes Rowley,
03:09releasing this image, saying he deliberately started this wildfire in Canfield Mountain
03:14and Coeur d'Alene Sunday and then opened fire on first responders.
03:18Two firefighters killed, a third badly wounded.
03:22Authorities say the suspect actually interacted with the firefighters before the shooting.
03:26They'd asked him to move his vehicle.
03:28The firefighters arrived on the scene and his vehicle was pretty close to where the firefighters parked.
03:34And they asked him to move it and there was some back and forth.
03:37We had to push that vehicle off the side of the mountain
03:40because we didn't want him to circle back and get in that vehicle and flee.
03:43Tonight, the suspect's grandfather, Dale, saying he's heartbroken.
03:47Nobody wants to think that their son or grandson is going to go do this.
03:51I feel more sad for the people that got killed than I do for him.
03:54Hopefully because they didn't deserve it.
03:56The horror unfolding around 1.21 p.m. Sunday afternoon,
04:00firefighters responding to a routine call-out for a brush fire near a popular trailhead.
04:05Crews racing right into a trap.
04:08By 2 p.m., 40 minutes later, gunfire and these panic calls began.
04:12We need law enforcement immediately.
04:14We've got two unresponsive battalion chiefs.
04:16First responders realizing they are under attack.
04:19I'm pinned down behind Battalion 1's rig.
04:22It's clear to me that this fire was intentionally to draw us in.
04:26Police exchanging gunfire with the suspect, later using cell phone data to pinpoint his location in a wooded area.
04:33And there, six hours later, authorities removing the suspect's body just as the wildfire closed in.
04:39Is there an indication that he used that shotgun that was found beside him on himself?
04:43Yes.
04:43Overnight, police and firefighters in that solemn procession to honor their colleagues.
04:49And tonight, officials revealing both of the fallen firefighters were beloved battalion chiefs who could have retired but stayed on.
04:56Chief Frank Harwood was 42 and the father of two.
05:00Chief John Morrison with Coeur d'Alene fire since 1996.
05:04And that third firefighter wounded, Dave Tisdale, is still in critical condition.
05:09And David, the sheriff telling me the suspect had no known criminal history, no ties to terrorism.
05:16They're pouring over his social media.
05:18I just want to give you a sense of how chaotic it was when the SWAT team pulled in to try to retrieve the bodies of those fallen firefighters.
05:26They were taking fire themselves.
05:28And at one point, they were so concerned that that suspect would wheel around and try to steal one of the vehicles that they actually pushed his vehicle off a cliff and then disabled the firefighter vehicle, slashing their tires and actually shooting into their engine blocks.
05:42David.
05:42Just extraordinary what they faced in that procession through that community deeply moving tonight.
05:46Matt, thank you.
05:47There's also news breaking at this hour in the Idaho College murders case, which sources are now telling ABC News at this hour what would be a stunning turn for defendant Brian Koberger.
05:56After pleading not guilty and after months of delays, what sources now say the defendant has agreed to.
06:01Here's ABC's Kana Whitworth.
06:04Tonight, breaking news in the University of Idaho murder case.
06:07Sources telling ABC News the man accused of the brutal slaying of four college students, Ethan Chapin, Zana Kornodel, Kaylee Gonsalves and Madison Mogan, has accepted a plea deal.
06:17According to sources, Brian Koberger will plead guilty to all four counts of murder and will be sentenced to four consecutive life sentences with no possibility of parole and is waiving all rights to an appeal in this proposed deal.
06:31This is all in exchange for the death penalty to be taken off the table.
06:35In a letter provided to victims' families, the state will seek restitution, saying this resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family.
06:45But for every person involved, justice can look different.
06:48Does justice lie in a conviction?
06:53I don't think there's going to ever be any justice.
06:55I mean, yeah, we can have justice for the conviction of it, but I don't get to still hang out with Ethan.
07:01And so they still don't get to, yeah, they don't have a son, they don't have a daughter anymore.
07:08So is that justice?
07:10Probably not.
07:11Now, David, a change of plea hearing is set for Wednesday, sentencing then expected later in July.
07:17And as you mentioned, simply a stunning turn of events, David, in a case that has gripped this nation.
07:23Kana Whitworth with what sources are telling ABC News at this hour.
07:26Kana, thank you.
07:27Now to Capitol Hill tonight, Senate Republicans trying to push through President Trump's massive tax cut,
07:31benefiting wealthy Americans, and the president's cuts affecting health coverage for more than 11 million Americans.
07:37Food stamps and college aid affect it as well.
07:39Tonight, some critics in his own party defying the president, refusing to support it.
07:43One senator saying he won't run again.
07:45And Elon Musk again warning against this bill now, now threatening Republicans who vote for it.
07:51Mary Bruce at the White House tonight.
07:53Tonight, Senate Republicans scrambling to push through the massive tax cuts and spending bill at the heart of President Trump's agenda.
08:00The bill includes roughly $4 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy, along with new funding for immigration enforcement,
08:12and fulfills some campaign pledges like no taxes on tips and overtime.
08:17It also guts Biden-era clean energy initiatives and slashes Medicaid, something Trump promised he would not do.
08:25A new estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicts some 11.8 million Americans would lose their health coverage over the next decade.
08:34It's the biggest Medicaid cut in history and represents the largest transfer of wealth in history.
08:41It is caviar over kids, hedge funds over health care.
08:46Trump insists the Medicaid cuts only target waste, fraud and abuse.
08:50But a member of his own party, Republican Senator Tom Tillis of North Carolina, says the president doesn't understand his own bill.
08:58So what do I tell 663,000 people in two years or three years when President Trump breaks his promise by pushing them off of Medicaid because the funding's not there anymore, guys?
09:14When the White House, which is advising the president, are not telling him that the effect of this bill is to break a promise.
09:23Trump furious with Tillis, threatening to primary him, but Tillis refusing to cave, instead announcing he won't run for re-election,
09:32saying leaders who are willing to embrace bipartisanship, compromise and demonstrate independent thinking are becoming an endangered species.
09:40Other Republicans alarmed by the bill's price tag, which by one estimate would add at least $3.3 trillion to the debt over the next 10 years.
09:49Tonight, at the 11th hour, Elon Musk swooping in again, declaring every Congress member who votes yes should hang their head in shame,
09:59threatening they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this earth.
10:05And Republicans in the Senate want to vote on this bill tonight.
10:08Reminder, they can only afford to lose three Republicans and still pass this.
10:12And right now, more than that remain undecided.
10:15And even if this bill ultimately passes the Senate, it then goes back to the House, where Speaker Johnson has that razor-thin majority.
10:22And already, some Republicans are opposing the changes made in the Senate.
10:25David.
10:26Mary Bruce tracking this into the night at the White House there.
10:28Mary, thank you.
10:29Now, just as millions travel for the July 4th holiday, the severe storms, damaging winds moving up the I-95 corridor.
10:35Philadelphia, New York City, all included in this.
10:38Ginger Zee is standing by with the forecast.
10:40Stephanie Ramos on the challenges already tonight.
10:42Tonight, families packing airports and highways, getting a head start on the 4th of July.
10:49If you thought last year was busy, AAA says buckle up.
10:521.3 million more of us will be hitting the road this year than last.
10:56Driving the increase?
10:58The lowest summer gas prices in more than four years, according to AAA.
11:02GasBuddy says the national average is just $3.14 a gallon.
11:07And experts say the busiest days to drive are July 2nd, that's Wednesday, and Sunday, July 6th.
11:14But it's not all smooth sailing.
11:16In Washington County, Maryland this morning, a wind turbine blade slid off a truck, blocking Interstate 70.
11:22One person was hurt.
11:23And southwest of Savannah Sunday, multiple Amtrak passengers rushed to the hospital with heat exhaustion after being stuck for hours.
11:30As always, weather is the X factor.
11:34Over the weekend, massive tornadoes tore across the northern plains.
11:38And dozens of planes at Atlanta's Hartfield-Jackson Airport were taken out of service after wind and hill storms.
11:45David, right now here at LaGuardia and other northeast airports, delays are starting to pile up due to thunderstorms in the area.
11:53David.
11:54And I fear that could get much worse in the next 24 hours.
11:56First, Steph, thank you.
11:57Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee, of course, tracking these storms moving right into the northeast.
12:02Hi, Ginger.
12:03Hi, David.
12:04The impacts from tonight's storms I would call the appetizer to the main dish of severe weather that's coming for us tomorrow afternoon.
12:11Let's go ahead and go through the maps.
12:13Those slow-moving storms could produce one to two-inch per-hour rainfall rates for Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
12:19are in a flood watch right now.
12:20Pittsburgh also in that.
12:21But watch as the cold front approaches, and by tomorrow afternoon, I'd say after 4 p.m., you really need to start paying attention to that area that we've highlighted.
12:29That's a level two out of five.
12:30Baltimore and Washington, D.C. are back in it.
12:32We stop the clock at 7 p.m. when this computer model has those storms coming through Philadelphia, New York City, and even into Connecticut.
12:39The damaging wind in excess of 70 miles per hour would be the main hazard with that.
12:44Lightning on those runways is never good either.
12:45And then by the holidays, looking much better, David, for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, just a stormy bit as we go toward the Gulf Coast.
12:52Yeah, just got to get through these next 24 hours.
12:54Everyone be safe out there on the roads.
12:55Ginger, thank you.
12:56We'll see you first thing in the morning.
12:57Here in New York City tonight, the dramatic moments involving the jury now in the Sean Diddy Combs trial, just five and a half hours now into deliberations and notes already for that judge.
13:07ABC's chief investigative correspondent, Eric Katursky, with what those jurors are already signaling tonight.
13:12Tonight, a potential snag as the jury begins deciding the racketeering and sex trafficking charges against Sean Combs.
13:19An hour into deliberations, the four persons sent a note saying they were concerned one of the jurors cannot follow your honor's instructions.
13:26That juror is a 51-year-old scientist with a doctorate in molecular biology.
13:30The note did not make clear what the issue was, and the judge sent back a note of his own, telling the jury to follow his instructions and return to deliberations.
13:39The eight men and four women are deciding whether Combs ran a criminal enterprise with employees who prosecutors said serviced the defendants' every desire through a methodical pattern of violence, coercion and manipulation, procured drugs, and stocked hotel rooms with baby oil and lubricant.
13:54Combs has denied all the charges, and the defense argued his employees were simply buying items for a celebrity boss, telling the jury, you know, I don't expect that we're going to see Beyonce and CVS.
14:05The jurors are now deciding five criminal counts. When there's a verdict, they'll fill out this form and deliver it to the judge.
14:13Late today, David, the jury sent another note asking about some of the drug allegations that support the racketeering conspiracy charge.
14:20Then they went home for the day after about five and a half hours of deliberations. They'll be back at it here tomorrow, David.
14:25Eric Katursky following this trial from the start. Aaron, thank you.
14:28The Dramatic Rescue tonight, the Disney Cruise rescue boat racing to a father and daughter after the girl fell overboard and that father then jumping in to try to save his daughter.
14:37Here's ABC's Victor Akendo now.
14:40Tonight, you're watching dramatic moments on the high seas, rescue boats racing to a father and daughter who went overboard.
14:46The pair, treading choppy waters, watch as the crew on that small yellow boat from the Disney Dream pulls the two on board.
14:54The Disney ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale Sunday after a four-night Bahamian cruise.
14:59Passengers tell us the girl somehow fell off and her dad jumped in after her.
15:04Gail Merrick was on board and heard from other passengers the girl fell from the fourth floor deck.
15:09I just saw a bunch of the staff running outside on the fourth floor deck and I figured something had happened.
15:14An emergency code for man overboard went out on the ship's intercom and the crew immediately went into rescue mode.
15:21I think it was really heroic. I mean, he jumped in after her and they were treading water and he was just holding on to her.
15:27Passengers thankful this wasn't worse.
15:29I felt sick to my stomach. I had goosebumps the whole time and I don't think I breathed until they returned to the ship. We all cheered.
15:37David, that ship is docked back in Florida tonight. Disney praising the crew for their swift actions.
15:42David, Victor Akendo with us. We're glad they're okay, Victor. Thanks.
15:46To the economy tonight, the stock market setting new records.
15:48The Dow Jones jumping 275 points, closing at 44,094.
15:52The Nasdaq hitting an all-time high, gaining 96 points, closing at 20,369.
15:57And a record day for the S&P 500, up 31 points, finishing at 6,204.
16:03When we come back here tonight, the deadly plane crash.
16:05At least six killed. Also, the NBA star and the gambling investigation tonight.
16:09What we're learning. And then the record heat on opening day at Wimbledon.
16:12The dramatic moment you'll see at star player Carlos Alcaraz racing to a fan in the stands in a moment here.
16:20Tonight, the NTSB is now investigating the deadly plane crash in Ohio, not far from Youngstown.
16:25Authorities say all six on board were killed, including two experienced pilots and four passengers.
16:30The twin-engine Cessna going down behind a home just after takeoff, just two miles from the runway, bursting into flames.
16:36Officials say the plane was headed to Bozeman, Montana.
16:39Tonight, ESPN is now reporting that Detroit Pistons guard Malik Beasley is reportedly under investigation for gambling related to NBA games.
16:47Beasley's attorney says his client has not been charged and is asking fans to reserve judgment.
16:51The Pistons say they are cooperating with the investigation.
16:54Beasley was in talks to extend his contract with the team.
16:57Those talks now reportedly on hold.
16:59When we come back here tonight, record heat on opening day at Wimbledon.
17:02What you'll see here in a moment, star player Carlos Alcaraz and what he suddenly had to do, rushing to the stands in a moment.
17:10To the index tonight, record heat taking its toll on players and spectators on the first day of Wimbledon in England, of course.
17:16The temperature hitting 91 today, shattering the previous record for the first day of 86.
17:21That was set in 2001.
17:22Players trying to cool off with ice today.
17:24And then one of the top players in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, racing to offer his water bottle after a spectator collapsed.
17:31Luckily, she'll get that water bottle now for life.
17:33When we come back tonight, America's strong.
17:35And it centers on this question tonight.
17:36Is 13 really an unlucky number?
17:39You're not going to believe what happened.
17:40Finally tonight, they were engaged on Friday the 13th, married on Friday the 13th.
17:45They thought 13 was their lucky number.
17:48In Pittsburgh tonight, April and Eric Schmidt married 33 years this fall.
17:53It turns out they got engaged on Friday the 13th in March of 1992.
17:57They would then get married on Friday the 13th, that November.
18:02And listen to this.
18:03April, recently flying home to Eric after a long work trip, landing at Pittsburgh International Airport.
18:08It was Friday, June 13th, just a few weeks back.
18:1130 minutes into her drive home, she realized something was missing.
18:15She had her ring on, but there was no diamond in it.
18:19She rushed back to the airport, retracing her steps around the American Airlines baggage claim B.
18:24But she knew it wasn't good, and she realized her luck might have run out on Friday the 13th.
18:30But six airline service technicians, Tom, Steve, Lindsey, Brad, Sean, Court, all using flashlights to search that carousel.
18:38But the diamond, nowhere to be found.
18:40She would go home, but those workers reassured her they wouldn't give up.
18:44Hours later, sending April this photo, they had found the diamond.
18:49And this is the moment April gets the diamond back.
18:52Wow.
18:55Incredible.
18:56Those technicians proud and proving that Friday the 13th isn't so unlucky after all.
19:02Here's Steve.
19:03The expression on her face and that, it, you know, it made it all worth it.
19:08And right here tonight.
19:09Hi, David.
19:10April, relieved and grateful to those airport workers.
19:13They were so invested in helping me, and it was, it just made, made me feel so grateful.
19:22It was indeed just one more piece of evidence that Friday the 13th is only as bad as you make it.
19:29We are so glad you have your diamond back.
19:32And those airport workers, we love Pittsburgh.
19:35I'll see you tomorrow night.
