02:14Thanks so much for joining us on this Thursday.
02:16I'm Lindsay Davis in for David.
02:18We begin tonight with major developments
02:19in the race for the White House.

02:37but challenging Vice President Harris
02:39to meet for two others next month.
02:41Trump on the attack,
02:42criticizing the Vice President's intelligence
02:44and lodging complaints about coverage
02:46of the large crowds at her rallies.
02:48He also claimed abortion, a key focus of her campaign,
02:51will only be a small issue come November.
02:54And he was pressed,
02:55will there be a peaceful transfer of power if he loses?
02:58On the campaign trail today,
02:59Vice President Harris and Governor Tim Walz
03:02met with UAW members in Michigan.
03:04Their blitz of battleground states
03:05takes them to Phoenix, Arizona tomorrow.
03:08ABC's Selena Wang leads us off.
03:10Tonight, it's official.
03:12Former President Donald Trump
03:13and Vice President Kamala Harris
03:15will face off in a primetime debate on ABC next month.
03:19The debate, one of three that Trump agreed to
03:21during a Mar-a-Lago press conference,
03:23his first public appearance
03:25since the debut of the new Democratic ticket.
03:27I just look forward to these debates.
03:29I think it's very important that we have them.
03:32I think they'll be very revealing.
03:33I think they'll be very revealing.
03:36Trump challenging Harris
03:37to accept the other two proposed debates,
03:40insisting that he has not changed his campaign strategy
03:43to go after Harris and her vice presidential pick,
03:46Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
03:48We have somebody that hasn't received one vote
03:51for president, and she's running,
03:55and that's fine with me.
03:56Harris had previously committed to the ABC News debate
03:59after replacing President Joe Biden as the nominee.
04:02I'm glad that he's finally agreed to a debate
04:05on September 10th.
04:05I'm looking forward to it, and hope he shows up.
04:09Throughout the more than one-hour-long press conference,
04:12Trump repeating false and misleading statements,
04:15including that no one died on January 6th.
04:18According to the Department of Justice,
04:20five people died during or after the attack,
04:23including four protesters and one police officer.
04:28Trump also bristling at the idea
04:30that the Democratic ticket is gaining more support
04:32than his own, as Harris and Walz
04:34long-stormed the battlegrounds.
04:36They talk about, oh, the enthusiasm.
04:39Let me tell you, we have the enthusiasm.
04:41The Republican Party, and me as a candidate,
04:44but the Republican Party has the enthusiasm
04:48because people wanna see crime stopped.
04:50Trump even suggesting that he attracts crowds
04:53larger than Martin Luther King Jr. did
04:55for his I Have a Dream speech.
04:57I've spoken to the biggest crowds.
04:58Nobody's spoken to crowds bigger than me.
05:01If you look at Martin Luther King,
05:04when he did his speech, his great speech,
05:07and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything,
05:11same number of people.
05:12If not, we had more.
05:15And asked about President Biden's warning
05:16that there would absolutely not be
05:18a peaceful transfer of power if Trump loses in November,
05:21Trump falsely claimed that there was in 2020,
05:24and there would be again,
05:26as long as the election is honest.
05:28Of course there'll be a peaceful transfer,
05:31and there was last time,
05:32and there'll be a peaceful transfer.
05:34I just hope we're gonna have honest elections.
05:37And the vice president saying tonight
05:38that she's open to considering more debates,
05:41but only after the one on ABC News on September 10th.
05:44Harris also saying tonight
05:45that she wants to schedule an interview,
05:47a sit-down interview, before the end of the month.
05:50Lindsay.
05:51Selina Wang from the White House.
05:52Thanks so much, Selina.
05:52David Muir and I will moderate
05:54the ABC News primetime debate
05:55between Vice President Kamala Harris
05:57and former President Donald Trump on September 10th,
05:59right here on ABC.
06:01We move on now to Tropical Depression Debbie
06:03making its second landfall in South Carolina,
06:06spawning a deadly tornado and flood watches
06:08from South Carolina all the way to New York.
06:11The system expected to arrive in the Northeast by tomorrow,
06:14the storm triggering at least 12 reported tornadoes.
06:17Authorities say one person was killed
06:19when a tornado touched down
06:20in Wilson County, North Carolina.
06:22Dangerous flooding is expected from Washington, D.C.
06:25to Philadelphia, New York to Boston.
06:27ABC's Victor Acendo is in North Carolina.
06:31Tonight, as Debbie marches up the East Coast,
06:34the death toll is rising, and the roads are treacherous.
06:38Overnight on Highway 74,
06:39west of Wilmington, North Carolina.
06:42Take a deep breath.
06:43Um, I'm okay.
06:45Storm chasers and other drivers,
06:46including a Marine veteran, springing into action,
06:49racing to rescue a woman after her car
06:52hydroplaned and flipped over,
06:54carefully guiding her out of harm's way.
06:56It's a great relief.
06:57Yeah.
06:58I didn't expect to see somebody moving.
07:01Debbie blowing ashore just north of Charleston,
07:04its second landfall.
07:05Tropical, torrential rain inundating neighborhoods.
07:08East of Raleigh, in Lucama, North Carolina,
07:11this middle school taking a direct hit
07:13from a confirmed tornado.
07:14First responders searching the classrooms inside.
07:18Not far from there, this home collapsing.
07:21Search and rescue teams working to lift and stabilize it,
07:25finally finding the homeowner inside,
07:27who sadly did not survive.
07:29Norman Toler lives nearby and saw the tornado touch down.
07:33Look out the back door.
07:34And I dropped down to my knees and went to pray.
07:37I said, Lord, you know,
07:37I've worked all my life for what I've got here.
07:39Please don't take it.
07:41And it went right in the backyard.
07:44A devastating scene here in Lucama,
07:46and the threat is far from over.
07:47There's a tornado watch for the area until 8 p.m.
07:50and the possibility of flooding,
07:52even as Debbie makes her way straight to the Northeast.
07:55Lindsay.
07:56Debbie still lashing out on the weather.
07:57Weary Victor, thank you.
07:58That system is expected to hit the Northeast tomorrow.
08:01Let's get right to meteorologist Lee Goldberg
08:03from our partner station, WABC, here in New York.
08:05Lee, what's the latest?
08:08Well, Lindsay, Debbie's finally on the move.
08:10You know, downgraded to a depression,
08:11but that doesn't diminish the impact it'll have
08:13through the Mid-Atlantic and into the Northeast.
08:15We have flood watches that are out from the Carolinas
08:17all the way to New England.
08:18The tornado watch was now expanded from North Carolina
08:21all the way up into the D.C. area.
08:23So let's time this out for you.
08:25We have an active tornado warning north of Moorhead City.
08:27The heaviest rain over North Carolina
08:29and Western Virginia tonight.
08:31Into Baltimore and D.C. tomorrow morning
08:33and really hammering Central Pennsylvania,
08:35State College, Williamsport, even up to Elmira, New York.
08:38You do not want to be on I-87 during the afternoon hours
08:41tomorrow, very heavy rain,
08:42and then the threat for flash flooding, damaging winds,
08:44even isolated tornadoes,
08:46right down into the New York City area.
08:47The good news is it leaves the scene
08:49and we're back to beautiful weather,
08:50probably cleaning up though over the weekend.
08:52The highest risk of flash flooding
08:53from Harrisburg to Burlington,
08:54as Ginger always says, have two ways to get warnings.
08:57Lindsay?
08:58Right, Lee, thank you.
08:58Now to that stunning headline from the Summer Games.

09:03after winning the bronze medal in the 200 meter race.
09:05Medical staff then rushing to his side.
09:07Moments later, Lyles confirmed he tested positive for COVID
09:10but decided to run anyway.
09:12James Longman in Paris.
09:15A shocking upset for Noah Lyles tonight.
09:17The newly minted Olympic champion
09:19taking bronze in the 200 meter final.
09:21It's his best event and he was tipped for gold.
09:24But the Team USA star was running with COVID

09:29This is where he gets to show his speed.
09:31Botswana took gold.
09:32USA teammate Kenny Bednarik in silver.
09:35But moments after Lyles crossed the finish line,
09:37he was seen gasping for air on the ground.

09:41before wheeling him out of the arena.
09:43Lyles was fresh off that stunning 100 meter victory.
09:46He won by five thousandths of a second.
09:48Days earlier, he told ABC News
09:50he hoped to break the world record in the 200 meters.
09:53It's always the goal, being faster and faster.
09:56I have a desire that whatever I touch,
09:59I don't always want to be the best,
10:00but I want to change it by the time I leave.
10:02Team USA has now raked in over 100 medals.
10:05Gold today for Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone,
10:08who broke her own world record

11:51I told them to post guys over here.
11:54I wasn't even concerned about it
11:55because I thought someone was on the roof.
