02:11From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:22Good evening.
02:22It is great to have you with us here on a Monday night.
02:24Let's get right to it.
02:25There is a major flash flood threat as we come on tonight, including New York City from Connecticut to Pennsylvania, right down to Washington, D.C.
02:32More than 50 million Americans on alert at this hour.
02:35And take a look.
02:36This is the radar as we come on tonight.
02:38Heavy rain coming down three to four inches an hour in some places, falling on already saturated ground.
02:43Flooding roads.
02:44There have been rescues reported already.
02:46Thousands of flights canceled or delayed.
02:48The flooding, halting traffic in both directions on U.S. 30.
02:51This is Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
02:53Heavy rain tonight falling in Hoboken, New Jersey.
02:55You can actually see New York City way off there in the background.
02:59These pictures from Hoboken tonight.
03:00Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee leading us off this evening.
03:03She's tracking it all for us.
03:04Hi, Ginger.
03:06Hi, David.
03:07We've had to take cover here.
03:08So much lightning around.
03:09And those flash flood warnings have been going off on our phone.
03:12They read, this is a dangerous and life-threatening situation.
03:15Avoid travel unless you are in an evacuation order.
03:18Look at that map.
03:19The area is highlighted.
03:20Those are all flash flood warnings.
03:22Back through Pennsylvania, parts of New Jersey, Connecticut had them earlier.
03:25The problem with these storms, they are moving way too slow.
03:28That's why you're seeing those three to even four-inch per-hour rainfall rates, the training
03:33storms, as we call it.
03:34Many of these totals could end up in that half-foot range.
03:37So from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Wilmington, Philadelphia included, too, the next couple of
03:42hours are going to be awful.
03:43When so many people are on the roads, you see it moving through there.
03:46That flood watch going from Virginia through western Massachusetts and Connecticut.
03:51Watch as it moves.
03:52The next few hours are the worst.
03:53Then it kind of dwindles as we get closer to 11, all on that super-saturated soil.
03:58And speaking of super-saturated, one other area that knows that so well, Texas Hill Country.
04:02A flood watch extended through tomorrow morning.
04:04David.
04:05Ginger Z, leading us off here on a Monday night.
04:07We'll see you first thing in the morning on GMA.
04:08Thank you, Ginger.
04:09In the meantime, we turn now to the horrific images coming in.
04:12The rescues.
04:13Firefighters smashing down doors to rescue seniors in a deadly fire at a senior facility
04:17in Massachusetts.
04:18At least nine people killed, 30 injured the fire overnight in Fall River.
04:23It's about 50 miles south of Boston.
04:25Firefighters finding residents hanging from windows, crying for help.
04:29Inside, those rescuers going room to room, breaking down doors to pull people out.
04:34At least nine residents were found dead at the scene, 30 taken to hospitals.
04:37One person reportedly in critical condition tonight.
04:40And this evening, we hear from seniors who were inside as those flames broke out, and the
04:44terrifying moments as their friends cried for help.
04:47Marcus Moore on the scene in Massachusetts.
04:50Tonight, the harrowing rescues from a devastating fire at this assisted living facility in
04:55Massachusetts.
04:56It left at least nine people dead and more than 30 injured.
05:02Heavy smoke and flames tearing through the Gabriel House in Fall River overnight.
05:06First responders banging on doors, climbing ladders, carefully rescuing dozens of residents
05:11from windows as they scream for help.
05:13You can see the broken windows up there and the shattered glass on the ground.
05:17For so many, this was their only way out.
05:19Lorraine Ferreira trapped in her room.
05:21Swunk was heavy in there, and I opened the window, and I yelled, help, help, help.
05:27And the fireman came up the ladder, broke the window, and got me out.
05:32Fearing the worst.
05:33I thought I was dead.
05:34I really thought I was going to meet my maker.
05:37I did think that.
05:39One after another, the injured rushed away on stretchers, residents in wheelchairs treated
05:44on the street.
05:45Five firefighters among the injured.
05:47Captain Franco Reagan describing the horrific scene.
05:49They raised the ladder.
05:50I went in.
05:51I didn't have an air tank or anything.
05:53First room empty.
05:55Second door, I kicked in.
05:56Body.
05:57Next room, empty.
05:58Next room, body.
05:59I just kept yelling.
05:59Guys kept coming down.
06:00We kept dragging them out.
06:01I searched as much as I could, and then after a while, they just can't take that much smoke.
06:07David, some residents said the staff response to this fire was inadequate, and in a statement
06:11to the Boston Globe, the owner says he's devastated by this tragedy and is cooperating with the
06:15investigation, and late today, officials said the fire here at the center does not appear
06:20to be suspicious.
06:21David.
06:21What a terrifying scene, Marcus.
06:23We turn next tonight to the awful scene playing out at the Grand Canyon.
06:26Two major fires closing in on the North Rim, destroying historic parts of the park, including
06:30a lodge that had been there for more than a century.
06:33The Dragon Bravo fire, they're calling it, forcing evacuations and destroying that historic
06:37lodge, the Grand Canyon Lodge, more than 100 years old.
06:40And the stunning images tonight, a firefighter recording this firewall right there.
06:45ABC's Faith Abube is on the scene tonight, and the stunning images, a massive spiraling
06:49mix of smoke and flames.
06:51Tonight, campers, staff, and even firefighters near the Grand Canyon forced to evacuate after
06:57the Dragon Bravo fire exploded to nearly 6,000 acres.
07:01More than 70 buildings destroyed, including the nearly 100-year-old Grand Canyon Lodge,
07:06a national landmark.
07:07Kirsten Fong from Seattle had just checked in.
07:11And then our tour guide came over, and he was like, we actually have to hustle it up.
07:15Firefighters forced to retreat after a chlorine gas leak broke out at a damaged water treatment
07:19plant nearby.
07:21While 40 miles north of there, the White Sage fire now 50,000 acres.
07:26Fire officials, they were telling Melinda Marshall her family's 102-year-old inn is still standing.
07:31Right now, they've been able to secure that line in front of us that we're safe, and we
07:37hope it stays that way.
07:38The North Rim is our home.
07:40Extreme heat fueling extreme fire behavior across the bone-dry west.
07:44A firefighter capturing this massive vortex of fire and smoke, known as a fire whirl, working
07:51the Deer Creek fire near Moab, Utah.
07:53And David, the wind's picking up again, exactly the opposite of what firefighters were hoping
07:59for, meaning another tough night ahead as they try to get a handle on these raging wildfires.
08:04David.
08:05Faith Aboube on the scene for us.
08:06Faith, we appreciate it.
08:07Next, the deadly church shooting in Kentucky.
08:09Authorities say a man going and looking for the mother of his children.
08:12And when she wasn't there in the church, instead, police say he opened fire on the pastor's wife
08:17and daughter, killing them.
08:19ABC's Erin Katursky tonight, taking us inside that church.
08:23Tonight, this tight-knit community nestled in the rolling Kentucky bluegrass is grieving
08:27after a man opened fire inside a church, shooting the pastor, killing the pastor's wife and daughter,
08:33and injuring the daughter's husband.
08:34He shot over my son, who was in a bassinet, and killed my mother.
08:3972-year-old Beverly Gumm and her 34-year-old daughter, Christina Combs, were shot and killed
08:44by this man, Guy House.
08:45My mom died in the place that she loved the most.
08:50The only thing she loved more than her children was this church.
08:52The rampage began Sunday morning when House shot and injured a state trooper who had pulled
08:57him over.
08:57He fled, carjacked a vehicle, and drove to Richmond Road Baptist Church, looking for the mother
09:02of his children.
09:03He's like, where's Angel?
09:04I just want to speak to Angel.
09:06That's my sister.
09:07My mom was like, Angel's not here.
09:08He said, well, I guess someone's going to have to die then, and shot twice.
09:11Here inside the church, the pews are still filled with what people left behind on Sunday,
09:15a bag, a hat, pillow, finery, hymnals, even a pair of shoes, all signs of a frenzied exit
09:22once the gunfire started.
09:24Police rushed to the scene and fatally shot the gunman.
09:26House had open warrants for his arrest, and just five days ago was placed on the county
09:31sheriff's most wanted list.
09:33And we spoke to the woman he was after, the mother of his children.
09:36He could have done the same thing to me that he did to them.
09:40It's very possible.
09:42With an open warrant and a history of mental health issues and drug addiction, David, we
09:47asked the police today whether this suspect should have had a gun.
09:50State police did not say, but the family described him as a dangerous criminal.
09:54In fact, David, he was supposed to have been in court today for a hearing about domestic
09:58violence.
09:59David.
09:59Aaron Katursky in Lexington for us.
10:01Aaron, thank you.
10:02Tonight, President Trump is trying to quiet a revolt among many of his most devoted supporters
10:06of its demands over the Jeffrey Epstein case, the president defending Attorney General Pam
10:11Bondi, and why for some it hasn't been enough, and what they're still demanding.
10:15Here's Jonathan Karl tonight.
10:18Tonight, the White House is trying to defuse an explosion of anger among President Trump's
10:22core supporters.
10:23After the Justice Department and FBI announced it would not release any more information about
10:29the investigation into sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
10:32How many of you are not satisfied with the results of the investigation?
10:37For years, FBI Director Cash Patel and his deputy, Dan Bongino, stoked shadowy conspiracy
10:43theories surrounding Epstein.
10:45Shortly after becoming Attorney General, Pam Bondi promised the truth would come out, claiming
10:50she had a list of Epstein's clients.
10:52It's sitting on my desk right now to review.
10:55But last week, Bondi said there was no list at all.
10:58I was asked a question about the client list, and my response was, it's sitting on my desk
11:05to be reviewed, meaning the file along with the JFK, MLK files as well.
11:13That's what I meant by that.
11:14The president, like many New York celebrities, had some association with Epstein.
11:19When Epstein was arrested in 2019, Trump said they had had a falling out and hadn't spoken
11:24for 15 years.
11:26Now the president is calling out his own supporters, saying, what's going on with my boys and in
11:31some cases, gals?
11:32They're all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a fantastic job.
11:38Trump is urging them not to, quote, waste time and energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that
11:43nobody cares about.
11:44But today, his daughter-in-law, Laura Trump, said the president wants to, quote, set things
11:48right.
11:49Well, I do think that there needs to be more transparency on this, and I think that that
11:54will happen.
11:55Top Democrats say Trump and his team created the problem themselves.
11:59This was a conspiracy that Donald Trump, Pam Bondi, and these MAGA extremists have been
12:05fanning the flames of for the last several years.
12:08And now the chickens are coming home to roost.
12:12Trump worked the phones over the weekend trying to diffuse this controversy.
12:17Meanwhile, Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Cash Patel, were both here at the
12:23White House today for meetings.
12:24I am told this subject did come up.
12:27Some of President Trump's outside supporters are now calling for a special counsel to look
12:31into all this.
12:33But senior officials who I have spoken to here at the White House say the president has made
12:37it perfectly clear that he wants to move on.
12:40David?
12:40John Carl, right there in the briefing room for us tonight, John.
12:43In central Texas tonight, where those awful floods hit last week, killing so many, including
12:48those young girls at camp.
12:50Well, the new flooding and heavy rains tonight, and searchers who were still looking for victims
12:53from last week were told to get to higher ground.
12:56ABC's Maria Villarreal from Texas.
13:00Tonight, residents across the Texas Hill Country on edge after rivers and creeks burst their banks.
13:06And forced water rescues on Sunday.
13:10Crews battled a swift and powerful current to save this stranded driver stuck in waist-high
13:15water in McGregor, Texas.
13:17Trying to throw him a life jacket, eventually taking him to safety in a boat.
13:22Job number one is always saving lives, protecting lives, and finding those who have lost their
13:30lives.
13:31After that July 4th, flash flood killed at least 132 people along the Guadalupe River.
13:37Today, Kerr County on high alert with fresh rounds of rain urging search teams to move
13:43to higher ground.
13:44Officials say the number of people still missing has dropped from 160 to 101, as more victims
13:52have been identified and more of the missing accounted for.
13:57Officials today warning the search could last up to six months.
14:01We've heard accounts of trailer after trailer after trailer being swept into the river with
14:06families in them.
14:08Can't find the trailers.
14:09David, all of this rain obviously impacting the search crews.
14:12This river behind me rising several feet just today.
14:15The county is now saying they're bringing equipment to meticulously search the river,
14:19and they're also planning to drain two nearby lakes very soon.
14:24David?
14:24Extraordinary scene right there behind you again this week.
14:26Maria, thank you.
14:27Next tonight, President Trump signaling a seismic shift on Ukraine, now deploying new
14:32U.S. weapons, and what he's now saying about Vladimir Putin.
14:35Ian Pannell in Ukraine again tonight for us.
14:38Tonight, a major about face for President Trump, announcing he's selling U.S.-made air defense
14:43weapons to NATO to help defend Ukraine from Russia's relentless assault.
14:48The move comes after months of praising Vladimir Putin, saying he believed he wanted peace.
14:53Today, he threw in the towel.
14:55I'm disappointed in President Putin, because I thought we would have had a deal two months
15:00ago, but it doesn't seem to get there.
15:02It was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine.
15:06Russian missile strikes in major cities increasing from a year ago.
15:10Trump growing frustrated.
15:12We thought we had a deal numerous times.
15:14I'd get home, I'd say, first lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir.
15:20I think we're finished.
15:21And then I'll turn on the television, or she'll say to me one time, wow, that's strange, because
15:26they just bombed a nursing home.
15:29They said, what?
15:31Now, along with those Patriot missile systems, President Trump threatening severe tariffs within
15:3650 days, unless Russia agrees to a peace deal.
15:39President Zelensky, who met with a U.S. special envoy earlier, speaking to Trump tonight, welcoming
15:48the move.
15:49David, two defense officials telling ABC News the Pentagon's still working on what military
15:54aid is going to be approved.
15:55But many here underwhelmed.
15:57There's one Ukrainian analyst comparing it to giving morphine to a dying patient.
16:01David.
16:02Ian Pennell, live in Kiev again tonight.
16:04Ian, thank you.
16:05The Supreme Court handing President Trump a victory tonight, allowing the president to
16:08lay off nearly 1,400 workers at the Education Department.
16:11The ruling lifted a block on the president's executive order that a lower court judge had
16:15imposed.
16:16This new Supreme Court ruling tonight unsigned and gave no reasoning, but the three liberal
16:20justices dissented.
16:21About half of the workforce at the Department of Education now gone.
16:25In New York City tonight, former Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing he will stay in the race
16:30for mayor and run now as an independent.
16:32But Cuomo says if a September poll shows he's not the highest ranked challenger to the Democratic
16:37nominee, he will drop out of the race.
16:39Cuomo lost last month's Democratic primary to 33-year-old self-described Democratic socialist
16:43Zoran Mamdani.
16:45Current Mayor Eric Adams is also running as an independent.
16:49When we come back here tonight, the fight and chaos erupting on a passenger jet, this jet forced
16:53to make an emergency landing in Maine and what we've learned.
16:56Also, this surprise moment from Neil Diamond, you'll see it, and the images coming in now,
17:00the home surveillance showing a plane going down in a neighborhood, multiple injuries,
17:05neighbors racing to try to save those on board.
17:07Take a moment here.
17:10Tonight, the image is a small plane crashing into a neighborhood in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
17:14Home surveillance capturing the plane going down Sunday.
17:16Miraculously, everyone survived.
17:18Four people injured, unclear the extent of their injuries.
17:21The pilot trying to land at the time, neighbors using fire extinguishers and a water hose
17:25to put out the engine fire.
17:27A passenger flight from Cancun to London forced to divert to Maine because of two fighting
17:31passengers, the TUI Airways flight landing in Bangor.
17:34The crew reporting a passenger disturbance, authorities taking both passengers off that plane.
17:40When we come back tonight, there is news this evening about NFL legend John Elway and that
17:44surprise moment from Neil Diamond, and you'll see it.
17:47To the index, NFL legend John Elway has been cleared in that golf cart accident that killed
17:52his friend and former agent.
17:54Elway was driving when Jeffrey Sperbeck fell out of the cart at the Madison Club near Los
17:59Angeles in April.
18:00Well, seven years after he retired and revealed his Parkinson's, Neil Diamond surprising fans
18:05in L.A.
18:05He appeared right there at the matinee of A Beautiful Noise, the Neil Diamond musical,
18:13and by the way, he's now 84.
18:16Love seeing that.
18:17When we come back tonight, one team I am sure you'll be rooting for tonight, and they've
18:21just sent in their message for all of you at home.
18:23Finally tonight, one Texas team, America Strong.
18:28Tonight here, the young softball team determined to show up despite what they've endured, the
18:33Texas Voodoo Girls softball team from Kerrville, Texas.
18:36The devastating floods hitting their hometown just 10 days ago.
18:39They had been training all season long for a national competition in Oklahoma City.
18:44As a team, they decided to make that seven-hour drive north anyway.
18:48They were there for each other and just listened to the reason they made the trip.
18:52Hi, David.
18:53Hi, David.
18:54Hey, David.
18:55Their coach, Corey Traub.
18:56Thank you for reaching out to us.
18:58They'll tell you why.
18:59Macy Cobb on first base.
19:01Even through all the hardships, we still wanted to represent the Hill Country community.
19:05Right fielder, Bailey King.
19:07It helped take our minds off of the devastating floods happening in our hometown.
19:11Hi, David.
19:12Shortstop, Caden Sparbo.
19:13Even with all the heartbreak and devastation, we wanted to show that we can do it.
19:18Coach Traub's daughter, Kylie, a pitcher and second base.
19:21Our community has come together and we have been supported in so many ways.
19:24Hi, David.
19:25And catcher, shortstop, and pitcher, Callie Phillips.
19:27Callie and the whole team telling us they lost 3-1, then 3-2.
19:31It was close.
19:32But just getting there was the victory.
19:35And they are proud to represent their hometown.
19:37Even though we have suffered an unmeasurable amount of pain and tragedy,
19:41we will stay strong and rise above all of this.
19:46You will indeed.
19:47And we're cheering for you.
19:48Good night.
19:48Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Muir, America's most watched newscast.
