02:11Tonight here, we hear from the newly engaged and why they want to find that other couple.
02:19From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:27Good evening, and we begin tonight with the breaking news coming in from a Colorado courtroom at this hour.
02:31The verdict of the case making national headlines.
02:33A well-known dentist accused of killing his wife of 23 years by slowly poisoning her protein shakes with cyanide.
02:41Authorities say his slow, methodical plan landed his wife in the hospital three times over 10 days.
02:46Tonight, James Craig has been found guilty of killing his wife, Angela, the mother of his six children, now convicted of first-degree murder.
02:52The jury deliberating for more than eight hours.
02:55And just moments ago, the judge sentencing James Craig to life in prison.
02:59It was a story that made national headlines.
03:07A community dentist who authorities say was secretly and systematically poisoning his wife to death.
03:13Lacing her protein shakes with cyanide and a drug found in over-the-counter eye drops.
03:19Pink top shaker bottle.
03:20This is a murder weapon.
03:21This is one of the murder weapons.
03:23Puzzling symptoms sending her to the hospital three times over 10 days in March of 2023 until prosecutors say James Craig administered the fatal dose as the mother of his six children lay dying in her hospital bed.
03:38Late today, the dentist in a Colorado courtroom as the judge read the jury's verdict.
03:43We, the jury, unanimously and beyond a reasonable doubt, find the defendant, James Craig, guilty of murder in the first degree.
03:51Craig also found guilty of trying to fabricate evidence to make his wife, Angela's death, look like suicide, asking others to lie for him, including one of his own children, and asking a fellow inmate to kill the detective investigating him.
04:07The defense argued Angela actually took her own life after she learned her husband was cheating on her.
04:13But the jury, not convinced.
04:15Angela's family, emotional in court.
04:18None of us could have imagined that the person she chose as her companion, the father of her six children, and the man we welcomed into our family, as our trusted brother-in-law, would callously and grueling without mercy take her life.
04:35And David, we know Craig will spend the rest of his life behind bars, one of his children saying in court that her father will forever be a villain.
04:45David.
04:45Kena Whitworth leading us off tonight.
04:46Kena, thank you.
04:47Now to the new images tonight after one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded of magnitude 8.8, striking off the coast of eastern Russia.
04:55You likely got the alerts last night on your phone, triggering tsunami warnings for millions from Japan to Hawaii to California and much of the west coast of the U.S.
05:03The quake and falling pieces of ceilings.
05:06This is the airport near the epicenter.
05:08Doctors performing cancer surgery, trying to protect the patient right there in the O.R. as the earthquake hit.
05:14Tsunami waves and flooding along Russia's coast while in Hawaii, tsunami warnings going off.
05:19Residents and tourists there seeking higher ground.
05:22And, of course, the alerts in California right up the west coast.
05:25And tonight here, what scientists now say could be coming next.
05:29Trevor Ault on the California coastline.
05:31This was the moment one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded triggered tsunami waves and panic around the Pacific Rim from Russia to Japan to the U.S.
05:41That 8.8 magnitude quake striking just before 1130 a.m., 85 miles off the Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia's far east coast.
05:50Fielding shaking violently.
05:53Doctors at this cancer hospital forced to brace their patient in the middle of surgery.
05:57The front of this kindergarten completely sheared off.
06:01The tremor setting off tsunami alerts from Russia to Japan, Alaska, Hawaii, and the west coast.
06:07Terrified Japanese residents taking refuge on the roof of a fire station in Hokkaido, our Brit clinic in Tokyo Bay.
06:14People in Japan have been advised to stay away from the water.
06:17And coastal defenses have been bolstered, like here around the Tokyo Bay, since the last major tsunami in 2011.
06:24Sirens blaring on the beaches in Honolulu.
06:27All the lifeguards will be leaving at 5 p.m.
06:30Lifeguards urging people to evacuate.
06:33The rush to higher ground resulting in a massive gridlock.
06:36So there's the beach as it stands right now.
06:40Parking lot is completely empty.
06:43Let's see how this goes.
06:44Some flights to Hawaii forced to turn around and go back.
06:48It's best for us to turn around and go back to Vancouver.
06:51This animation showing dozens of ships and boats racing out of Honolulu Harbor and out to sea to ride it out.
06:59In Hilo, a cruise ship having to depart early, leaving some passengers behind.
07:04We are on our way to a shelter and higher ground.
07:08We did not make the ship.
07:09In California, this time-lapse showing boats bouncing in Half Moon Bay.
07:14The harbor in Crescent City near the Oregon border sustaining damage.
07:17And as the west coast braced back in Russia, waves up to 13 feet high crashing ashore near the quake's epicenter.
07:25Rocks raining down, sea lions diving into the water.
07:29And in Japan, these images of massive sperm whales washed ashore in Chiba Prefecture making headlines.
07:35But officials say it's not related to the tsunami.
07:38The quake occurring on what's known as a megathrust fault.
07:41So-called megathrust quakes can be among the most powerful.
07:44And the ensuing tsunami waves can travel up to 500 miles an hour.
07:48And the seismic activity also resulted in the eruption of Russia's largest volcano.
07:53A research camera showing the glowing lava.
07:57And David, seismologists are now expecting aftershocks to continue for weeks or more.
08:02And they say they can't rule out the possibility of another quake that's even larger than this one.
08:06But given this magnitude, 8.8, it is stunning that so far there has been no reported loss of life.
08:12David, that is very true.
08:14Trevor, all tonight.
08:15Trevor, thank you.
08:16This evening here in New York City, the stunning story now emerging after that deadly rampage on that Park Avenue high-rise building.
08:22One of the workers who was shot and what he did.
08:25Crawling through a doorway after being wounded and then calling several floors up.
08:28What he told his co-workers, what he told his friends on that call.
08:32Here's Aaron Katursky tonight.
08:33Tonight, we're learning about an extraordinary act by one of the workers shot inside this Park Avenue skyscraper.
08:40People just f***ing running.
08:42The man who worked for the NFL shot by the suspect in the lobby.
08:45And instead of calling 911 to get help for himself,
08:49authorities say he somehow crawled through a door and called his friends and colleagues several floors up
08:54to alert them of the danger headed their way as the suspect headed for the elevators.
09:00The workers, one of five people shot, the only one to survive.
09:04These guys are coming.
09:05Tonight, authorities say that selfless act to call others, to tell them to get to safe rooms,
09:10to get to panic rooms instead of begging for help for himself, makes him a hero.
09:15He didn't call 911.
09:17He called his friends to tell him upstairs what was happening.
09:21You guys, like, I just got shot downstairs.
09:24Get covered.
09:25You got to fortify those doors.
09:26Hit those panic rooms.
09:27Like, he's letting his team know, like, this guy's a hero.
09:31The shooter, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, seen here walking into the building with an M4-style assault rifle,
09:36never made it to the NFL offices that authorities believe were his target.
09:40Police found a three-page note in the shooter's pocket claiming he had a traumatic brain injury
09:45and blaming the NFL for concealing the dangers to players' brains to maximize profits.
09:50Definitely had to stay disciplined.
09:52The shooter played high school, not professional football, and his coach in Southern California
09:56told us he did not recall Tamura getting hurt.
09:59That was a complete shock.
10:01I did not witness any injuries.
10:03Sources tell ABC News Tamura left another note at his Las Vegas home apologizing to his parents.
10:09When I look into you and Dad's eyes, I see complete disappointment.
10:13I love you, Mama.
10:14I'm sorry.
10:15And tonight, David, NYPD detectives are talking to the shooter's parents in Las Vegas
10:19to learn more about his mental health history.
10:22David.
10:22Eric Gaturski on this again tonight.
10:24Aaron, thank you.
10:25Next tonight, hear that disturbing headline from Danville, Virginia.
10:28A city councilman intentionally doused with flammable liquid and set on fire.
10:32Here's Pierre Thomas.
10:34Tonight, a horrific crime in broad daylight.
10:37A city councilman from Danville, Virginia, doused with gasoline and set on fire.
10:43What's up, guys?
10:44This is Lee Vogler.
10:44Councilman Lee Vogler confronted inside the office of a local magazine where he also worked.
10:50An individual forced his way into our office carrying a five-gallon bucket of gasoline
10:56and poured the gasoline on Lee.
11:00Lee attempted to flee, ran to the front of the building.
11:04The individual followed him and set him on fire.
11:08Vogler elected in 2012, then the youngest member of the city council.
11:11As you guys know, for 13 years, I've never missed a meeting.
11:15Tonight, witnesses say that before the councilman was airlifted to a North Carolina hospital,
11:20he identified his attacker as 29-year-old Shotzi Buck Hayes.
11:24Police arrested Buck Hayes after he allegedly fled the scene.
11:28Authorities say the suspect's motive involves a personal matter not related to the victim's position
11:33on Danville City Council or any other political affiliation.
11:37Tonight, this suspect is being held without bond in the Danville City Jail.
11:42He's facing a charge of attempted first-degree murder.
11:45David?
11:46What an awful story, Pierre Thomas, tonight.
11:48Next this evening, with this dangerous heat and now this sudden temperature drop soon coming,
11:52the Northeast, New York City included, now bracing for potential for dangerous storms
11:57and possible flash flooding.
11:58Let's get right to Chief Meteorologist Lee Goldberg from WABC, tracking it all again tonight for us.
12:02Haile.
12:05Hey, David.
12:05We're extinguishing the heat wave right now in New York City with a heavy shower that's just formed on top of us,
12:10and more of this to come tomorrow.
12:12Meanwhile, we still have heat alerts from Texas all the way up to New England.
12:15Let's track the relief.
12:16New York City goes from feeling like 100 degrees to 60s as we go into the day on Friday.
12:21That relief will get down to the I-20 corridor.
12:23It'll still be blazing along the Gulf Coast.
12:25Again, the heat goes out swinging, a rare moderate risk for flash flooding from D.C. to New York tomorrow,
12:30two inches in less than 30 minutes possible.
12:33David?
12:33We'll be watching that right here with you.
12:35Thank you, Lee.
12:35Now to the new images tonight of that crash over the Potomac,
12:38the final moments of that American Airlines flight colliding with the U.S. Army Blackhawk
12:42and what the pilots of the passenger plane said in those final moments.
12:46Here's Mola Lenghi.
12:48Tonight, newly released video showing the moment of the deadly crash
12:52between an American Airlines flight and a Blackhawk helicopter over the Potomac River.
12:57The bright lights of the passenger plane seen as it makes its descent,
13:00the military helicopter heading directly towards the jet, the two colliding.
13:0567 people killed, their loved ones, wiping away tears as they watched the video
13:10during the first day of NTSB hearings on the investigation.
13:14The agency revealing the final conversations of the American Airlines pilots recovered
13:18from the cockpit voice recorder, sharing their words, but not their voices.
13:22Both pilots hesitating about air traffic control's last-minute switch to land on runway 33.
13:28One pilot at first saying,
13:30I really don't want to, but I guess, uh, tell them.
13:34Then, changing their mind.
13:36Nah, it's fine. We got the numbers for it.
13:38Yeah, tell them we're fine.
13:39Then, two seconds before impact,
13:41the pilots swearing and attempting, in vain, to pull up the plane.
13:47The NTSB finding the helicopter was flying above the altitude limit
13:51and that the crew was likely not aware of their height
13:53due to notoriously faulty altimeters on the Blackhawk.
13:56Well, David, the NTSB chair also saying that there was only 75 feet of separation
14:03between helicopters and passenger jets at a very critical point near runway 33.
14:08The FAA has since suspended and even restricted some flight routes near DCA, David.
14:14Mola Lenghi tonight. Mola, thank you.
14:16We turn overseas tonight into the hunger crisis in Gaza.
14:19Tonight, hear the faces of the children and the families in desperate need.
14:23Here's our chief foreign correspondent, Ian Pannell.
14:25Tonight, pressure for a ceasefire and an end to the suffering in Gaza growing.
14:33The images shocking the world.
14:36The children of Gaza, skin and bone, wasting away.
14:40The cruelty of hunger striking the weakest.
14:44This baby girl tested for malnutrition and you can see it clearly.
14:48Red. It means she's acutely malnourished.
14:51A tiny syringe, her only sustenance.
14:53Over the last 24 hours, at least seven people have died due to malnutrition.
14:58A sea of Palestinians carrying aid as more humanitarian assistance is airdropped today.
15:04Lining up for aid, often chaotic and deadly.
15:09Today, at least 37 people killed and 270 injured, attempting to get food.
15:15The desperation is acute.
15:17Crowds rushing to the water's edge to retrieve airdropped aid.
15:21Others frantically crowding just for a ladle full of soup.
15:25Two boys left scraping the empty pot, not knowing when they'll eat again.
15:30Those scenes fueling the growing pressure to end the war.
15:33Two leading human rights groups accusing their own governments of genocide in Gaza.
15:38A claim Israel strongly rejects.
15:40Why did you decide, as an organisation, to use the word genocide to describe what's happening in Gaza?
15:47What we've seen in the last 22 months is the wholesale destruction of Gaza's health system.
15:55And when you destroy the health system, you destroy the people.
15:59David, momentum for a ceasefire and hostage deal growing.
16:03Arab nations calling for Hamas to disarm.
16:05And now Steve Witkoff, the special envoy, heading this way for talks.
16:09David.
16:10Ian Pannell with us tonight. Ian, thank you.
16:12Back here in the U.S. tonight, a political note.
16:14Former Vice President Kamala Harris announcing she will not run for governor of California next year.
16:18Harris says she gave serious thought to running for governor of her home state.
16:22She now says she will not run.
16:23Those close to Harris tonight reportedly saying this decision does now leave open the potential for another presidential run in 2028.
16:31When we come back here tonight, the deadly explosion.
16:33Two children and an adult killed.
16:35The children waiting to be taken to the doctor's office.
16:38Also tonight, a tearful Sharon Osbourne as thousands lined the streets.
16:41And in the northeast tonight, swimmers sent from the waters at two major beaches.
16:46The shark sightings in a moment here.
16:50Tonight, we're learning more about that deadly explosion at a plant in Fremont, Nebraska.
16:54Two children and a worker all inside were killed.
16:56Authorities say two girls were waiting to be taken to a doctor's appointment.
17:00When we come back here in the northeast, sharks spotted near two major beaches.
17:04Also tonight, the proposal.
17:06The boyfriend setting up his camera.
17:07They were not expecting this.
17:09And they really need your help tonight.
17:11To the index tonight, thousands in the U.K. remembering Ozzy Osbourne.
17:19A marching band performing Black Sabbath's Iron Man.
17:22His wife, Sharon Osbourne, their children, Kelly and Jack, laying flowers at a memorial.
17:27Osbourne died following a battle with Parkinson's.
17:29He was 76.
17:30Back here at home in the northeast, shark sightings keeping swimmers out of the water on Long Island.
17:34Video showing multiple spinner sharks close to shore near Flying Point Beach in the Hamptons.
17:39Potentially more dangerous bull shark spotted right off Fire Island.
17:42When we come back here tonight, the proposal.
17:44The perfect setting.
17:45The beautiful couple.
17:47And then it took a turn.
17:48You have to see this.
17:49ABC World News Tonight with David Muir.
17:53Sponsored by Aleve.
17:55Just want to leave.
17:56Up to 12 hours of pain relief.
17:57It was the perfect setting for the most romantic proposal.
18:03Until it wasn't.
18:04Tonight, it was supposed to be a dream wedding proposal captured on camera.
18:10The boyfriend had set up his camera for his proposal.
18:13But the couple was not expecting what would happen next.
18:16Kevin Arrieta and Natalie Melanie from Miami, dating for three years.
18:20They were in Greece on vacation.
18:21Kevin had picked out the perfect spot to propose, setting up his phone to record.
18:26Getting down on one knee at the top of these steps, overlooking the ocean.
18:31Natalie emotional, her head in her hands.
18:33And then, a woman steps into frame, right in front of them.
18:38And then, a man walks in, eating a chocolate bar.
18:43The newly engaged couple were so caught up in their own moment, and rightly so,
18:47that they had no idea they'd been photobombed until they later watched the video back.
18:52I don't know where they walk in perfectly into frame.
18:55She walks in, and then him, and then the chocolate bar.
19:00It just kept adding up.
19:01The newly engaged telling GMA this morning they're now on the hunt for the other couple.
19:07So, if you're watching at home tonight, and you recognize them, Natalie and Kevin are hoping you'll let them know.
19:13And here's why.
19:14We'd love to invite them to our wedding.
19:16And we hopefully think that they also think this is funny, like we did.
19:20Tonight, the newly engaged couple now back home in Florida, and telling us tonight they've shared their video,
19:25hoping it will now inspire others to have fun, enjoy every moment, even the ones that are unexpected, including that couple stepping in.
19:33We love them and want to thank them for making us laugh forever.
19:36Find the joy and humor in life that's a much lighter way to live.
19:41Let's find that other couple, and congrats.
19:45Good night.
