02:19Good evening, and we begin tonight here with the breaking news, the stunning death of actor Malcolm Jamal Warner,
02:23known by millions of Americans who watched The Cosby Show, of course.
02:27He played Theo Huxtable.
02:28Tonight, authorities say the actor was reportedly on a family vacation in Costa Rica,
02:32swimming when he got caught in a strong current, and they say he was pulled out to sea.
02:36Malcolm Jamal Warner played the only son on The Cosby Show among four sisters.
02:41So many Americans watched him grow up on that show.
02:44He went on to act in dozens of other TV shows and films, and he won a Grammy as well.
02:48Tonight here, the heartfelt words pouring in, the touching words from the actor himself,
02:53what Malcolm Jamal Warner once said about life and about death.
02:57Here's ABC's Victor Akendo leading us off.
02:59Tonight, tributes are pouring in for actor Malcolm Jamal Warner.
03:04Be right there.
03:05Who charmed TV audiences for years as the lovable Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show.
03:11Police say the 54-year-old died in an accidental drowning off Costa Rica's Caribbean coast,
03:17where he was reportedly on a family vacation.
03:19Investigators say Warner got caught in a strong current while swimming,
03:23and that beachgoers tried to rescue him, but it was too late by the time first responders reached him.
03:28You cannot joke around when it comes to a woman like Lana Herman.
03:32Okay.
03:36For all eight seasons, Warner made America laugh as the only son in a house with four daughters.
03:42Hi, Theo.
03:44What is this?
03:46What do you mean?
03:54Is this my shirt?
03:56Is this the shirt I paid $30 for?
03:59Is this the shirt that you're supposed to think is important for trail?
04:02Warner went on to act in films and dozens of TV shows,
04:05from sitcoms like Malcolm and Eddie and Read Between the Lines,
04:09to dramatic roles in Sons of Anarchy and The Resident.
04:12This baby needs surgery in the next few hours.
04:14Warner even winning a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
04:18It made me realize that...
04:19His most recent project, a podcast,
04:22looking at the experiences and identities of blacks in America.
04:25Years after The Cosby Show...
04:27Hi, hi.
04:28Warner said he was proud of the life he made after that iconic role.
04:33Is this your brother?
04:34No, he's my boyfriend.
04:39I've had such an awesome life.
04:40You know, I've got my ups and downs and all of that.
04:44But, like, if I die tomorrow,
04:46I know I would go with a smile on my face.
04:51I know I haven't wronged anybody.
04:54I have peace of mind.
04:55And for me, you can't put a price on that.
04:58And, David, the heartbreaking reaction tonight.
05:03One of Warner's co-stars, Tracee Ellis Ross,
05:05saying he made the world a brighter place.
05:07And actor Jamie Foxx writing, he is speechless on this one,
05:11adding, rest in power, my brother.
05:14David?
05:14He was so joyful and he brought so much to that show.
05:17Victor Akendo leading us off tonight.
05:18Victor, thank you.
05:19We turn now to the terrifying moments for passengers on board a Delta passenger jet
05:23after a close call with a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber.
05:26The Delta pilot saying he was forced to make a sudden hard turn to avoid the bomber.
05:31Passengers now describing the plane on its side.
05:33They could actually see the ground.
05:35The incident under investigation tonight.
05:37And the Air Force now confirming a B-52 aircraft
05:39did conduct a flyover of the North Dakota State Fair at the time of the flight.
05:44Here's Gio Benitez.
05:45Tonight, the FAA and the Air Force are investigating how a Delta regional jet
05:50coming in for landing at Minot International Airport in North Dakota
05:53got on a collision course with a B-52 bomber.
05:57It's unclear how close the two jets came to each other,
06:00but the military jet seen here had its location turned off
06:03and was executing a flyover at a state fair about half a mile from the runway.
06:09Moments later, you can see the Delta flight operated by SkyWest
06:13on approach with 76 passengers on board.
06:17The pilot telling passengers he had to perform an aggressive maneuver
06:20to land the plane safely after that military aircraft
06:24became visible in their flight path.
06:26For those of you on the right-hand side,
06:27you probably saw the airplane kind of sort of coming at us.
06:29Nobody told us about it.
06:30So given his speed,
06:32I thought that was the safest thing to do to turn behind us.
06:34This is not normal at all.
06:36Monica Green was on that flight.
06:38All of a sudden, we just kind of jerk really hard to the right.
06:41And it goes from like this to just like almost sideways completely.
06:45And we're like looking out the window, I'm facing the grass.
06:49The tower either failed to communicate or the B-52 crew failed to communicate
06:52that they were going to be cutting across the runway center line.
06:55And so this was obviously quite a shock for the pilot of the regional jet
06:59to see this massive, fast-moving B-52 coming across his flight path.
07:04And, David, it is critical that we find out exactly what happened here
07:07because, of course, it was just six months ago
07:09when a military helicopter collided with an American Airlines jet
07:13killing all 67 people.
07:16David.
07:17Our aviation correspondent, Gio Benitez, with us here tonight.
07:20Thank you, Gio.
07:20Now to the life-threatening heat.
07:22More than 90 million Americans under heat alerts at this hour.
07:25In New York City, it'll be in the high 90s by week's end.
07:28It'll feel well above 100.
07:29And the storms tonight across several states at this hour moving east.
07:32A dramatic water rescue in Kansas City, Missouri.
07:35A woman clinging to a tree in Indian Creek.
07:37First responders arriving by boat.
07:39In Maine, the moment a roof was ripped off a house
07:41nearly hitting a driver in this car right here.
07:44Chief Meteorologist Ginger Zee tracking it all on a Monday night for us.
07:46Hi, Ginger.
07:48Hi, David.
07:49We've got a severe thunderstorm watch from Billings, Montana
07:51right to the state line of South and North Dakota, parts of Wyoming, too.
07:55Then you see that flood watch along the Nebraska-Kansas state line.
07:58Those storms are producing one to three-inch per-hour rainfall rates.
08:02So watch that just north and west of Kansas City.
08:04And Rui Doso, New Mexico, once again in a flood watch today and tomorrow.
08:08Then we've got to talk heat.
08:09The extreme heat warning for day two or three, depending on where you are,
08:13focused in on Memphis, Little Rock, Kansas City.
08:17Look at all that hot pink on the map right down the Mississippi River.
08:20Some of the fields lights could go up to 111.
08:23You'll also notice that extreme heat watch up for Chicago.
08:26Well, that's because numbers will well surpass 100 in the feels-like category.
08:31Look at St. Louis 113.
08:32And yes, David, like you said, New York, Washington, D.C.
08:35We get it by Friday.
08:36All right, Ginger Zee with us here on a Monday night.
08:38We'll see you first thing in the morning, Ginger.
08:40Just in tonight, disturbing new video obtained by TMZ showing the moment police say a driver
08:45intentionally plowed into a crowd in Los Angeles.
08:48What led to this moment in Hollywood?
08:50And authorities say it was a miracle.
08:51No one was killed.
08:52Here's our chief national correspondent, Matt Gupman, with the video tonight.
08:55And a warning, it is disturbing.
08:58Tonight, that horrifying video showing multiple angles of the moment a man drove his car into
09:03a crowd outside a club in Hollywood, California.
09:06The horror unfolding at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning with dozens of people standing outside
09:11the venue.
09:12According to the LAPD, the suspect had been kicked out of the club, drove away, then made
09:17a U-turn onto the sidewalk.
09:19The vehicle struck a food cart and then came to rest at a light pole.
09:25It was an intentional act.
09:27And these 30 people were hurt.
09:28Bystanders then pulling the driver out of the car, beating him, and one of them even shooting
09:33the suspect before fleeing on foot, according to police.
09:37Police then releasing this photo of that suspect.
09:39They have also identified the man they say rammed the nightclub as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez,
09:44who was taken to the hospital to treat his gunshot wound and then booked on suspicion of assault
09:50with a deadly weapon.
09:51And David, if that suspect is charged and convicted on multiple counts of assault with
09:56a deadly weapon, he could face dozens of years in prison.
09:59As for the victims, David, thankfully, all of them are expected to recover.
10:03It is a miracle no one was killed there.
10:06Matt Guttman tonight.
10:07Matt, thank you.
10:08This evening to the Jeffrey Epstein files and after President Trump told the attorney general
10:11that Justice Department should release some of the grand jury testimony in the Epstein case.
10:16Tonight, the White House is now asked, why not release the full Epstein files?
10:20Here's Mary Bruce.
10:22President Trump was out of sight today, but appears eager to change the subject from sex
10:27offender Jeffrey Epstein, firing off a flurry of posts on social media on a wide range
10:32of topics. The president has ordered the Justice Department to ask the courts to release grand
10:37jury testimony in the case, but he's stopped short of telling DOJ to release the full Epstein
10:43files as promised.
10:44Why hasn't the president just ordered the FBI to release the full Epstein files? Just get
10:49it all out there.
10:50The president has said if the Department of Justice and the FBI want to move forward with
10:54releasing any further credible evidence, they should do so. As to why they have or have
10:58not or will, you should ask the FBI.
11:00But does he still anticipate releasing more information, Caroline?
11:03It's up to the attorney general.
11:04Trump and some of his top allies like FBI Director Kash Patel and his deputy Dan Bongino
11:09spent years stoking shadowy conspiracy theories about Epstein. But now Trump attacking his own
11:16supporters for wanting more information.
11:18They're stupid people.
11:19The president's reversal has amped up scrutiny of his own relationship with Epstein. The two
11:24men were friendly for more than a decade, socializing in New York and Palm Beach.
11:29In 2002, Trump told New York magazine,
11:32I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. It's even said
11:37that he likes beautiful women as much as I do. And many of them are on the younger side.
11:42No doubt about it, Jeffrey enjoys his social life.
11:46The Wall Street Journal reports that in 2003, Trump allegedly sent Epstein what the paper describes
11:52as a, quote, bawdy letter for his 50th birthday.
11:55Trump now filing a $10 billion lawsuit against the journal and its owner, Rupert Murdoch,
12:01alleging they falsely claimed that he authored, drew and signed a letter containing salacious
12:06language within a hand-drawn naked woman, which was created with a heavy marker,
12:10and insisting no authentic letter or drawing exists.
12:15ABC News has not independently corroborated the letter. The journal stands by its reporting.
12:20When Epstein was arrested in 2019, Trump said they'd had a falling out and hadn't spoken
12:25in 15 years.
12:27And now some Democrats are joining Republicans in Congress, demanding the files be released.
12:33Even Speaker Johnson has said they should come out, but now he says he won't call for a vote
12:37on a resolution to back that up, saying the administration, quote, needs to have the space
12:42to do what it is doing. David.
12:44Mary Bruce, live at the White House. Mary, thank you.
12:46We turn next here to a horrific case in upstate New York. The father who told police his nine-year-old
12:51daughter was abducted in a white van, then leading to an Amber Alert, is now charged himself
12:56with her murder. Tonight here, the daughter's last call to her mother, and here's our chief
13:00investigative correspondent, Aaron Katursky.
13:02Tonight, this father is in custody, charged with killing his nine-year-old daughter
13:07after telling police she had been abducted near Lake George in upstate New York by a
13:11stranger in a white van.
13:12The email was taken approximately 15 minutes ago. He believes it was the exit 22 rep stop.
13:18They stopped for a bathroom break for her.
13:21Police issued an Amber Alert Saturday night, but say they quickly determined Luciano Fretolin's
13:25story did not hold up. Melina Fretolin was found dead Sunday morning in a remote pond.
13:30The two had been driving home to Montreal from a seemingly normal vacation in Connecticut
13:35and New York City. At about 6.30 p.m., she spoke to her mother on the phone and told her
13:39she and her father were in route back to Canada. The child appeared to be in good health and to not
13:45indicate she was under any duress. Sometime after that phone call and her father's report about an
13:50abduction three and a half hours later, police say Fretolin murdered his daughter. Melina lived with
13:55her mother, who was estranged from the father. Police say the mom had not been worried about the
13:59father-daughter trip. No word on a motive tonight, David. Police said the father has no criminal history and no
14:05history of domestic violence. He's charged with murder and concealing a corpse. No comment from his
14:10attorney. David. Aaron Katursky with us here. Aaron, thank you. Overseas tonight to the horrific images of
14:15fighter jet crashing into a school in Bangladesh. At least 20 people killed, many of them children. And the stories now
14:21coming in of students rushing in to help. Here's ABC's Tom Sufi Burridge. Tonight, a devastating scene in
14:28Bangladesh after a fighter jet slammed into a school. At least 20 people killed, more than 100 injured.
14:35Students rushing in to help as fierce flames and heavy smoking golfed the building in the capital, Dakar,
14:41trapping many inside. First responders pouring water on the wreckage, searching for survivors. Officials say
14:47the jet crashed into the second floor of the building, filled with third and fourth graders. The youngest
14:52victim, just five years old. The Chinese-made jet suffering a technical malfunction shortly after takeoff,
14:59while on a routine training mission. Authorities say the pilot made a valiant attempt to avoid densely
15:04populated areas before crashing into that school. David, the country's interim leader calling the loss of life
15:10irreparable, as authorities launch a full investigation. David. All right, Tom Sufi Burridge with us as well.
15:16Tom, thanks. Tonight, Israel expanding its operation into Gaza. Dozens of Palestinians reportedly killed
15:23while they were seeking aid. And it comes just days after the Catholic Church there that the late Pope
15:27Francis would call daily was hit in Gaza, too. Here's Ian Pannell. Tonight, nearly 100 people killed
15:35trying to get food aid in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The Israeli military accused of
15:41opening fire on desperate crowds. Hospitals overwhelmed with the dead and wounded.
15:47This man saying they raised their hands in peace to the soldiers, but the bullets came anyway.
15:55Israel disputing the death toll, saying they fired warning shots to remove an immediate threat,
16:00but they haven't said what the threat was. And with supplies running out, the need is crushing.
16:06Our team meeting Loran and her severely malnourished five-month-old baby daughter Haya at the hospital.
16:13The deep pain and frustration of not being able to look after my baby is indescribable, she says.
16:21It comes just days after that deadly Israeli strike on Gaza's only Catholic Church,
16:26the same church the late Pope Francis would call nearly every day.
16:30David, the White House tonight admitting President Trump caught off guard by that church attack and
16:36quickly phoning Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel. Netanyahu then issuing a statement saying the
16:43church attack was an accident that Israel deeply regrets. David?
16:47Our Ian Pannell with us tonight. Ian, thank you. When we come back, a lot more news ahead,
16:51the case that rocked New York City in the nation, the Eitan Pates case. And what a judge has now decided
16:56tonight. All these years later, it's making news. Also, a top college football recruit has been
17:01killed, an 18-year-old freshman. And tonight here, we remember a well-known actor. He appeared in more
17:06than 70 TV shows, and you'll definitely remember his work.
17:11Tonight, a major turn in the missing child case that shook New York City and the nation,
17:15the disappearance of Eitan Pates, one of the first children to appear in a milk carton. A federal
17:19appeals court today overturning the conviction of Pedro Hernandez, ruling he should either be retried or
17:24released from prison. Hernandez confessed to luring the six-year-old into a basement in Manhattan and
17:29killing him in 1979. His body was never found. The court, finding the trial judge's jury instructions,
17:35prejudiced the verdict. Tonight, authorities are searching for the suspects after the deadly
17:39shooting of a top college recruit, a football recruit at Ole Miss. Authorities say freshman Corey
17:44Adams was shot and killed just 10 minutes after arriving at a party outside Memphis. He was just 18 years
17:49old. When we come back tonight, we remember a well-known actor, more than 70 TV shows.
17:57To the index, we learned today that actor Tom Troop has died. His career spanning decades, movies,
18:01TV, theater, more than 70 TV shows, including the original Star Trek and Mission Impossible.
18:06A Korean war vet, he received the bronze star for a service. He was 97. When we come back tonight,
18:12the world's top-ranked golfer celebrating his big win, but it was his little guy who stole the show.
18:19Finally tonight, American Scotty Scheffler, his big win, but it was his little guy.
18:23Folks, we're rooting for two. Tonight here, the baby who stole the show. 29-year-old American
18:29Scotty Scheffler winning the British Open, but it was his 14-month-old son who adorably stole the spotlight.
18:35And Scotty Scheffler has his Open Championship.
18:40Golfer Scotty Scheffler winning his first British Open in Ireland. The crowd erupted.
18:45Walking over to his wife Meredith and their 14-month-old son Bennett for a hug.
18:50To my family, couldn't do any of this without you.
18:52Bennett pointing at Dad and then all eyes on Bennett. Dad watching his son trying to walk
18:57up to him on the 18th hole. Bennett is on the loose. There he comes. No!
19:04It's not easy up those slopes. Little Bennett taking a little tumble.
19:08One of the officials helping him up and handing him off to Dad.
19:11The crowd loving it. Dad carrying Bennett in one hand, his trophy in the other.
19:17It was kind of bad for him. He just kept falling down, but that's part of the learning curve and
19:22growing up. Tonight, Scotty Scheffler now just one major away the US Open from winning a career
19:27Grand Slam, saying he is thankful to have his family and, of course, Bennett right by his side.
19:33At the end of the day, there's more to life than playing golf, but I'm pretty excited to go home
19:38and celebrate this one.
19:38A win for Dad and son. And by the way, ABC News and its first newscast exclusively on Disney Plus.
