02:03From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight.
02:14Good evening, everyone.
02:15Thanks so much for joining us on this Sunday.
02:17I'm Lindsay Davis.
02:18We begin tonight with fast-moving developments in Los Angeles.
02:21President Trump deploying 2,000 National Guard members after violence and chaos erupts during
02:26immigration protests outside a federal building just moments ago.
02:30Police declared it an unlawful assembly.
02:32Those troops descending on the streets of L.A.
02:35Governor Gavin Newsom is blasting the move, calling it, quote,
02:38purposefully inflammatory and an alarming abuse of power.
02:42Nearly a dozen arrests overnight as some protesters tossed objects at officers.
02:47Police using tear gas and flashbang grenades to disperse the crowd.
02:51Today, protesters were back out on the streets for the third consecutive day.
02:55Some marching in downtown L.A.
02:57And police and protesters also squaring off here in New York City.
03:01Tonight, the Trump administration says California officials could face federal charges over their
03:05response.
03:06NBC's Matt Gutman is in Los Angeles and leads us off.
03:10Tonight, hundreds of National Guard troops are deployed on the streets of Los Angeles.
03:14A convoy of heavily armed and camouflaged troops arriving overnight,
03:18establishing staging areas at downtown federal facilities.
03:21President Trump calling up 2,000 members of the National Guard in an effort to stamp out clashes
03:26that broke out over the weekend between law enforcement and demonstrators protesting ICE
03:31deportations.
03:33Tensions boiling over after immigration authorities conducted a series of sweeps in recent days,
03:38arresting more than 100 immigrants in Los Angeles over the course of last week.
03:43Dozens of demonstrators arrested since the clashes broke out Friday.
03:46Officers in riot gear using tear gas and flashbangs to disperse protesters, some of whom hurled
03:52projectiles.
03:53And in an extraordinary scene Saturday afternoon, a Black Hawk helicopter landing in the parking
03:59lot of a Homeland Security office.
04:01Agents unloading supplies for law enforcement.
04:05And we were there this evening as that standoff continued outside a federal facility in downtown
04:11Los Angeles.
04:11This is one of the tear gas canisters that was just deployed against some of the couple
04:16of hundred people here.
04:17And on this side, there are about 100 federal law enforcement, California National Guard.
04:22The president bypassing California's governor, authorizing the troop deployment for 60 days
04:27late Saturday, saying in a memo, the protests constitute a form of rebellion against the United
04:32States.
04:33Secretary of Defense Pete Hexeth adding on social media that the administration is also considering
04:38mobilizing active-duty Marines if the clashes continue, an idea the president did not rule
04:44out late today.
04:45What is the bar for sending Marines?
04:48The bar is what I think it is.
04:50I mean, if we see danger to our country and to our citizens, we'll be very, very strong
04:54in terms of law and order.
04:56Local officials blasting the White House in response.
04:59Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass writing, deploying federalized troops on the heels of these raids
05:03is a chaotic escalation.
05:06And California Governor Gavin Newsom calling the troop deployment purposefully inflammatory,
05:11adding the idea of deploying active-duty Marines on U.S. soil is deranged.
05:16Today, Trump's allies in Washington defending the president's decision.
05:20Do you have any problem or any concerns about the president sending in the National Guard to
05:25a place where local authorities say that they're not needed and could be harmful?
05:29I have no concern about that at all.
05:30I think the president did exactly what he needed to do.
05:33President Trump is putting the safety of the communities that are being impacted by these
05:38riots and by these protests that have turned violent.
05:41And he's putting the safety of our law enforcement officers first.
05:44You can see the intensity of what has happened here in downtown L.A.
05:48Police arresting this man.
05:49He was walking on stilts.
05:51They've taken him down.
05:52There are projectiles being thrown.
05:54You can hear flashbangs, water, and all over there are these flashbang canisters that
06:00have been strewn here on the street.
06:02Police continue to try to push the crowd back beyond these federal buildings.
06:07Now, a reminder that this is the first time since 1965 that a governor has been bypassed
06:12in the deployment of National Guard.
06:14That's in the federal building just to my left.
06:16So we're seeing something that hasn't happened in quite some time here in downtown Los Angeles.
06:21Still an active situation there.
06:23Matt, thank you.
06:24Here in New York City, nearly two dozen people were taken into custody.
06:28What started as a protest to ICE deportation operations turned into a standoff, with demonstrators
06:33coming face-to-face with NYPD officers.
06:35Many were led away in zip ties.
06:38Tonight, nine of the 22 people taken into custody yesterday are facing charges.
06:42Now to that late-breaking news.
06:44A skydiving plane with 20 people on board crashed about 60 miles south of Nashville.
06:50Multiple injuries are reported, and some had to be airlifted to a local hospital.
06:54One witness says it happened shortly after takeoff.
06:57Here's ABC's Faith Abube.
06:57Tonight, multiple people airlifted to the hospital after the skydiving plane crashed 60 miles south
07:05of Nashville, just minutes after takeoff.
07:08Police say the plane was carrying 20 people when it came plunging down in Tallahoma, Tennessee
07:13around 12.45 p.m. local time.
07:17Flight trackers showing the 58-year-old plane going in circles just before the crash.
07:22The DeHavilland Canada DHC-6 twin otter badly damaged with the tail ripped off.
07:27Parts of the plane littered across this field, just 1,000 feet from the end of the runway.
07:33Crews rushing to the scene, airlifting some of the victims to the hospital, while others
07:37were treated on site.
07:39And Lindsay, despite what we're seeing of that wreckage, remarkably, police say no one
07:43died.
07:44The NTSB and FAA are now looking into what caused that crash.
07:48Lindsay.
07:49Faith, thank you.
07:50Now to the severe weather threat.
07:51More than 40 million are on alert from Texas into the East Coast.
07:55The storm's turning deadly, killing at least two people in Georgia and Mississippi.
07:59Downed power lines and trees leaving tens of thousands without power across the South.
08:04Let's get right to meteorologist Jeff Smith from our New York station, WABC.
08:08Jeff, can you time this out for us?
08:11It's going to be a very volatile evening across multiple parts of the country, Lindsay.
08:15We start along the East Coast.
08:16We have a tornado watch in effect for northern Virginia into Maryland, including the D.C.
08:19area.
08:20Could be isolated tornadoes within that zone.
08:23We've had damaging thunderstorms over the Carolinas.
08:25Those are moving offshore of the outer banks right now.
08:27The bigger concern is what's going to be happening from southern Oklahoma into northern Texas, including
08:32Wichita Falls and Dallas.
08:33It's a level four out of five moderate risk of very large hail and destructive wind gusts.
08:38We could have 80 to 100 mile per hour winds along a vicious line of storms, maybe hail to
08:44the size of baseballs or larger.
08:46Heading into tomorrow, that severe risk will shift into the southeast, including parts that
08:51have already gotten hit during the past 24 hours.
08:53Lindsay?
08:53Many in the thick of it again, Jeff.
08:56Overseas now to the assassination attempt on a presidential candidate in Colombia.
09:00Miguel Uribe Turba is in critical condition and said to be fighting for his life after he was
09:05shot three times during a campaign rally in Bogota.
09:08The event has shaken the country with a long history of political violence.
09:12And we want to warn you, some of these images may be disturbing.
09:15Here's ABC's Marcus Moore.
09:17Tonight, authorities investigating an apparent assassination attempt in Colombia.
09:22Graphic videos posted on social media capturing the moment Colombian senator and presidential
09:27hopeful Miguel Uribe is shot multiple times during a campaign rally in Bogota on Saturday
09:32night.
09:33In Colombia.
09:33Uribe was speaking to a crowd of dozens when he was apparently targeted from behind.
09:39Bullets hitting the 39-year-old in the head and thigh, according to officials.
09:43Two others were injured.
09:44Uribe rushed to an area hospital for emergency surgery.
09:48He has since been transferred to intensive care, according to the hospital, where his condition
09:52is considered to be, quote, of maximum severity.
09:55Authorities have arrested a 15-year-old suspect who they say was found in the area of the shooting
09:59with a 9-millimeter glock-type firearm.
10:02The attorney general's office taking the lead on the investigation, calling the shooting
10:06an attack on Democratic participation ahead of next year's presidential election.
10:10Lindsey, Colombian officials vowing to get to the truth and prosecute not only the alleged
10:15shooter, but also, quote, those in charge.
10:18Lindsey.
10:18That shooting hearkening back to a darker time.
10:20Marcus, thank you.
10:22Now to politics and President Trump's so-called big, beautiful bill.
10:25The legislation is at the center of that feud between the president and Elon Musk.
10:29It narrowly passed the House, and now all eyes are focusing on the Senate, but Musk is not
10:34the only critic.
10:35Here's ABC's Alex Perche.
10:37Tonight, as the fallout continues between President Trump and Elon Musk over the so-called
10:41one big, beautiful bill, the fate of Trump's signature legislation now lies in the Senate.
10:47The legislation passed by just a single vote in the House, and Republicans in the Senate,
10:51where the margin for dissent is already razor thin, are still struggling to get on the same
10:55page.
10:56Big, beautiful bill the president has offered, I think I call it the big, not yet beautiful
11:01bill, needs some changes.
11:03Looming over the debate, the world's richest man, tech billionaire Elon Musk, publicly breaking
11:08with the president last week, calling the legislation a disgusting abomination that would
11:12add trillions to the national debt.
11:14Musk, who spent more than a quarter billion dollars on Trump's last campaign, even suggesting
11:20that next November, we fire all politicians who betray the American people.
11:24Some Democrats would welcome a Musk conversion.
11:27I would be supportive of anybody, including Elon Musk, putting resources forward right
11:32now to let more Americans know, sound the alarm, treat this like a Paul Revere moment.
11:39President Trump reportedly threatening that Musk would pay very serious consequences if
11:43he were to support Democrats running against Republicans who supported the legislation.
11:47And administration officials say that days after their intense public feud played out
11:52on social media, Trump still has not communicated with his former ally.
11:56No, he hasn't.
11:57And frankly, I don't think the president intends to.
11:59The president is very much focused on delivering on his priorities for the American people.
12:04And that includes passing the one big, beautiful bill.
12:07And Lindsay, tonight, another major development.
12:10At midnight, the president's latest travel ban goes into effect.
12:14This executive order puts four restrictions on 12 countries, partial restrictions on seven
12:19others.
12:19And it's reminiscent of the 2017 Trump travel bans that impacted majority Muslim countries.
12:25And like those, this latest round is likely to face legal challenges.
12:29Lindsay.
12:29Alex Preshay from the White House.
12:32Now to the war in Ukraine and more of our exclusive interview with Ukrainian President Zelensky.
12:36The new details about those brazen drone attacks deep inside Russia.
12:40ABC's chief global affairs anchor Martha Raddatz is in Ukraine.
12:44Tonight, this drone's eye view of Ukraine's remarkable attack on a fleet of Russian strategic
12:50bombers, revealing the devastating and intricate planning.
12:55And the key, inexpensive Ukrainian-made drones.
12:58And we were allowed to see exactly how they are made and where.
13:02This is one of many drone production facilities across Ukraine, spread out across the country.
13:08We can't tell you exactly where we are, because obviously these facilities are Russian targets.
13:13We saw where the explosive unit is placed on the quadcopters and shelf after shelf of the
13:19parts.
13:20Production is expected to hit one million by the end of the year.
13:24Ukraine's President Zelensky telling me that these inexpensive drones wiped out some of
13:31Russia's most expensive bombers.
13:34For Russians, more than $7 billion.
13:37And the drone's not very expensive.
13:40Yes, not.
13:42Yeah, we use cheap drones.
13:45Zelensky describing the planners of the secretive Operation Spider-Web as brilliant and saying
13:51with pride that no details had leaked.
13:54Even the U.S. was kept in the dark.
13:56Does President Trump believe that Russia is winning this war, do you think?
14:03Yes, it's not true.
14:04It's not a victory when you spend, really spend, one million people.
14:12Well, President Zelensky is urging President Trump to support stronger sanctions to put
14:17more pressure on Vladimir Putin.
14:19As for those ceasefire talks, they are scheduled to resume tomorrow.
14:23But so far, no progress has been made.
14:26Lindsay?
14:27Martha, thank you.
14:28Back here in New York, attorneys for Sean Diddy Combs are once again asking a judge to
14:32declare a mistrial in a sex trafficking racketeering case.
14:35Prosecutors are expected to respond before the trial resumes tomorrow morning.
14:39Let's bring in ABC's Ike Adjachi.
14:41Give us a sense of what prompted this request.
14:45Yeah, Lindsay, for the second time in just over a week, Combs' legal team is asking the
14:50judge to declare a mistrial.
14:52They're accusing prosecutors of misconduct after presenting what they're calling materially
14:57false testimony, specifically claims that Combs dangled Breonna Bongolin, a friend of
15:02his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, off the 17th floor Los Angeles balcony before slamming
15:07her into furniture in 2016.
15:09Defense attorneys say hotel receipts prove Combs was in New York at the time, calling
15:14Bongolin's account perjured testimony motivated by money.
15:17Last week, jurors heard dramatic testimony from witnesses under the pseudonyms Mia and Jane, both
15:24women attempting to paint a picture of coercion, control, and alleged sex trafficking, with
15:29Jane testifying about disturbing sexual encounters with Combs and male sex workers, where she claimed
15:36she was pressured into sexual acts, often suffering bruising and infections as a result.
15:41And in courtroom drama, the judge threatening to remove Combs from the courtroom after he
15:46was seen making facial expressions and eye contact with jurors, saying he'll take actions if it happens
15:51again.
15:52Lindsay Combs denies the allegations.
15:54The prosecution is expected to respond to the motion for a mistrial before court resumes tomorrow,
15:59when it enters its fifth week of testimony.
16:03Lindsay?
16:03So much interest in this case, Ike.
16:06Now to sports in Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
16:08The Oklahoma City Thunder is looking to even up the series after losing the first game to the Indiana Pacers.
16:13Let's bring in ABC's Will Reeve in Oklahoma City for us tonight.
16:17Will, no doubt this is a significant game for both teams.
16:22Absolutely, Lindsay.
16:23Good evening.
16:24And Game 2 just moments away here in Oklahoma City.
16:27And Game 1 was a stunner.
16:29The Oklahoma City Thunder heavily favored.
16:32They had control of the entire game.
16:35But as the Pacers have done now five times in these playoffs, they come back from a 15-point
16:41deficit, led by who else, Tyrese Halliburton, hitting that shot with three-tenths of the
16:46second remaining.
16:48They go on to win.
16:50And if the Pacers can steal Game 2, the odds are in their favor because teams that go up
16:552-0 in the Finals go on to win the series and the title 86% of the time.
17:01Only twice in NBA history has the road team won the first two games in the Finals.
17:07It hasn't happened in 30 years.
17:09The Thunder here still heavily favored at home with their raucous crowd behind them.
17:14But we'll find out together what's going to happen in this amazing series.
17:17Game 2 coming up on ABC at 8 Eastern, Lindsay.
17:20Pressure is on.
17:21We'll be watching.
17:22Will, thank you.
17:23There's so much more ahead on World News tonight this Sunday, including a frightening
17:26scene when a boat went up in flames with nearly two dozen people on board.
17:31Coco Gauff's secret.
17:32What she did to convince herself she could win the French Open.
17:35A dangerous situation in New York City last night.
17:40A boat caught fire near the Bronx with nearly two dozen people on board.
17:44Most suffered injuries but were able to swim ashore.
17:47One is reportedly in critical condition.
17:49Police say the boat's captain was arrested for allegedly operating a vessel while intoxicated.
17:54When we come back, an instant classic at the French Open.
17:57To the index now, and what a final today.
18:02The French Open defending champ Carlos Alcares lost the first two sets but then stormed back
18:08to beat Yannick Sinner in five sets.
18:10The match lasted nearly five and a half hours.
18:13Meanwhile, the women's champ Coco Gauff says self-persuasion played a big role in her victory.
18:18Gauff wrote on a piece of paper multiple times, I will win French Open 2025.
18:23When we come back, a victim of war gets to rewrite his own story.
18:30Finally, a young man's journey from the horrors of war to a new life in a new country.
18:37Ivan Shaban never dreamed this day was possible.
18:40Ivan Shaban!
18:42The 18-year-old graduating from high school in San Diego, California,
18:46just three years after being left for dead on the side of the road in his native Ukraine.
18:51When I got hit by the tank, at first I felt nothing, just darkness.
18:55As he was searching for food, a Russian tank ran him over.
19:00Ivan says he thought he was going to die.
19:02When I woke up, I couldn't feel my right food.
19:05Despite losing his right leg, Ivan was determined he wanted more out of life.
19:11A medical team flew him to San Diego, where he relearned how to walk.
19:15Ivan is now embracing what he calls a rebirth, a new life without a leg, but with much more opportunity.
19:22Fitted with a running prosthetic, Ivan competed on his track team.
19:26I feel that I'm very lucky that I stayed alive, because now I'm here.
19:31Be it land or sea, Ivan is now taking on extraordinary new challenges.
19:36This is my surfing leg.
19:39Hitting the waves, grateful for this second chance at life.
19:43The worst thing that can ever happen in your life sometimes can turn out to be the best.
19:49And you never know until you move forward.
19:52An inspiration.
19:53Thanks so much for watching.
19:54I'm Lindsay Davis.
19:55Good night.
19:56Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Muir, America's most watched newscast.
