02:23From ABC News World Headquarters in New York, this is World News Tonight with David Muir.
02:35Good evening.
02:36And we begin tonight here with several breaking stories.
02:38There's an urgent homicide investigation unfolding right now.
02:41A top American Idol producer and her husband have both been found dead.
02:45But we start with the deadly flooding in the northeast, the states of emergency, the terrifying images from the New York City subway,
02:51passengers trapped in cars, subway stairs turned into waterfalls with more than two inches of rain falling in an hour.
02:57A geyser at the 28th Street stop, the conductor of the subway train telling passengers it was too dangerous to open the doors.
03:04There was so much water on the platform and in the tunnel.
03:07On New York City's east side, FDR Drive was turned into a river.
03:11Dozens of water rescues in Union County, New Jersey, families saved by boat and high water vehicles as well.
03:17In Wayne, New Jersey, a bolt of lightning too close for comfort for one delivery driver right there.
03:22He didn't survive at all.
03:23And a home explosion as this emergency was all playing out in North Plainfield, New Jersey.
03:28Tonight, there are new flood watches and warnings.
03:30Ginger Zee is here at ABC's Janae Norman with the harrowing images right here in New York.
03:35Tonight, states of emergency in the northeast after deadly record-breaking flooding.
03:40In New York City, more than two inches of rain falling in just an hour, the highest hourly non-tropical rainfall ever.
03:49Subway stations turned to waterfalls.
03:52Geysers erupting inside the 28th Street subway station.
03:55Thank you passengers, I'm going to call this one in.
03:57I can't open the doors, it's not safe.
04:00The storms inundating roads all around New York City and into New Jersey, right in the middle of rush hour.
04:06How you guys doing?
04:08Good.
04:08In Scotch Plains, New Jersey, first responders used rescue boats and high-water vehicles to bring families to higher ground.
04:15In North Plainfield, New Jersey, cars in the water, one of them on fire.
04:21Neighbors were told to evacuate around 5 p.m. Monday.
04:23You can see in this house how high the water was coming up.
04:26So high.
04:27Look here at the house next door.
04:29This home exploded overnight.
04:31Fortunately, that family made it out safely.
04:33The house still smoldering this morning.
04:36Sadly, not far from here, receding water revealing tire tracks that are believed to be from a vehicle swept off the road with two women inside.
04:44They didn't survive.
04:46In Wayne, New Jersey, this delivery driver almost struck by lightning.
04:52Roads swamped in Maryland.
04:54And outside Richmond, Virginia, some 50 people had to be rescued after waterways in Petersburg rose 10 feet in just a few hours.
05:02Authorities declaring a state of emergency there, too.
05:06And, David, here in North Plainfield, authorities are still investigating the cause of this house explosion that happened right in the middle of this flood emergency.
05:14A major cleanup effort is underway.
05:16The ground still saturated here, David.
05:19And this area is under a new flood watch starting tomorrow.
05:22So let's get more on that, Janae.
05:23Thanks so much.
05:24Let's get to Chief Meteorologist Ginger Z.
05:25And, Ginger, as we heard Janae say, the flood threat in the east is not over.
05:30No, not at all.
05:31Petersburg, Virginia, that you saw in her piece there, getting that flooding again in a flood watch until midnight tonight.
05:37They're not alone.
05:38Those flash flood warnings are for areas that have already seen two to three inch per hour rainfall rates again tonight.
05:44From North Carolina right up through that flood watch in Maryland.
05:48So that's through midnight tonight.
05:49But by tomorrow afternoon, that same area that Janae was in has a flood watch for those storms that will come through in the afternoon.
05:55On that already saturated three to even eight inches that you had, it's going to be really hard for the creeks and rivers.
06:01So tomorrow afternoon, watch that in northwestern New Jersey.
06:04Then we have to talk about that area of interest, that low pressure system crossing the peninsula of Florida at this moment.
06:09It has a chance at becoming our next named storm, which would be Dexter.
06:13But whether it becomes something or not, it will bring a lot of rain.
06:16Looks like New Orleans already in a flood watch from Thursday to Saturday.
06:19Louisiana is going to be that target for the heavy rain.
06:21David, we'll watch it right here with you, Ginger.
06:23See you first thing in the morning on GMA.
06:25We turn now to the breaking news from Los Angeles.
06:27The chilling double homicide we're learning about right now.
06:30A top American Idol music producer and her husband have both been found dead in their home from gunshot wounds to the head.
06:36Found in separate rooms.
06:38Trevor Ault is on the scene for us.
06:40Tonight, authorities in Los Angeles announcing an arrest in the stunning double murder of an American Idol music producer and her husband.
06:48The victims were ruthlessly shot multiple times.
06:51Police say Thursday, the suspect, 22-year-old Raymond Budarian, scaled one of the fences at the home of Robin Kay and her songwriter husband, Thomas DeLuca.
06:59The couple returned home while Budarian was inside, and he allegedly shot and killed both of them during a struggle.
07:06Yesterday afternoon, officers discovered the couple in separate rooms.
07:11Police came to do a wellness check, and the family said they hadn't heard from him in four days.
07:16Police had responded to a possible burglary at the home last Thursday.
07:20But the LAPD says at the time, there were no signs of trouble, and the house was highly fortified.
07:26Police now believe the murders happened that day.
07:28The motive is unknown.
07:30We're still looking into whether he has any type of relationship with the victims.
07:35Right now, it is an apparent random attack.
07:38David, a spokesperson for American Idol, says Robin had worked with the show since 2009,
07:43and she was loved and respected by all who came in contact with her.
07:46They say they are devastated by her and her husband's passing.
07:49David?
07:49Yeah, horrific discovery.
07:50Trevor, thank you.
07:51Next tonight here, President Trump this evening now weighing in on the Jeffrey Epstein controversy,
07:56now saying Attorney General Pam Bondi should release, quote,
07:59whatever she thinks is credible.
08:00And Pam Bondi has now been asked, will she do it?
08:03Here's our Chief Washington Correspondent, Jonathan Karl, tonight.
08:05Today, amid a growing Republican outcry over the Justice Department's refusal
08:11to release the files from their investigation of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein,
08:17President Trump said his Attorney General Pam Bondi should release, quote,
08:21whatever she thinks is credible.
08:22Whatever she thinks is credible, she should release.
08:25For years, vocal Trump supporters, including Cash Patel and podcast host Dan Bongino,
08:31fired up the Trump base by stoking shadowy conspiracy theories
08:35about Epstein.
08:36After he won back the White House, Trump rewarded both of them,
08:40naming Patel FBI director and making Bongino his deputy.
08:45As Attorney General, Bondi promised to release the Epstein files.
08:48But then earlier this month, the Justice Department and the FBI released a memo saying the case
08:53was closed and no further information would be made public.
08:57That triggered an avalanche of outrage on the right.
09:00Even the President's daughter-in-law, Laura Trump, said, quote,
09:04there needs to be more transparency.
09:06I would like to see that also.
09:08But I think the Attorney General, the credibility is very important.
09:12And you want credible evidence for something like that.
09:15The President, like many New York celebrities, had some association with Epstein.
09:20When Epstein was arrested in 2019, Trump said he had had a falling out with him and hadn't spoken
09:26to him in 15 years.
09:27Today, Trump told ABC's Catherine Falders that Bondi briefed him on the Justice Department's
09:33review of the Epstein files.
09:34What did she tell you about the review?
09:36And specifically, did she tell you at all that your name appeared in the file?
09:40No, no.
09:41She's given us just a very quick briefing.
09:45And in terms of the credibility of the different things that they've seen.
09:49Reporters then asked Bondi if she's now ready to release the files.
09:53Our memo speaks for itself, and we'll get back to you on anything else.
09:57I haven't seen all of his statements today.
10:00But on Capitol Hill, a growing number of Republicans are sounding off on the Attorney General.
10:04I'm not happy.
10:05Nobody's happy about it.
10:06Nobody knows what's going on.
10:08The President's effort to put out this fire is not working, at least not yet.
10:12Mr. Epstein was a sex trafficker.
10:15I think it's reasonable for the American people to ask who he sex trafficked these young women
10:25to, if anybody.
10:28Democrats say this is all a problem of Trump's own making.
10:31The whole country is saying, release the files.
10:34That's what Donald Trump said.
10:35That's what J.D. Vance said.
10:37That's what the Attorney General said.
10:38That's what the FBI Director said.
10:39And now, suddenly, they want to sweep the whole thing under the rug.
10:43Today's Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, said that Attorney General Bondi should come
10:47forward and explain her inconsistent statements about the Epstein files.
10:52And at least two Republican senators close to Trump are calling for congressional testimony
10:58from Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's longtime associate, who is now in prison for conspiring
11:04with Epstein to sexually abuse young girls.
11:07David, John Carl on this again tonight.
11:09John, thanks.
11:10We're also tracking those major fires burning near the Grand Canyon, now destroying more
11:13than 70 buildings, many of them historic in the canyon, including the famous Grand Canyon
11:18Lodge.
11:18And tonight, they are now calling in reinforcements.
11:21ABC's Faith Abube is on the scene with that smoke right behind her.
11:24Faith?
11:26David, you can see behind me those heavy plumes of smoke.
11:29That is the Dragon Bravo fire pushing into the canyon.
11:32Extreme summer temperatures fueling the flames here.
11:35Officials now calling in reinforcements, doubling the number of helicopters doing water drops
11:39and requesting additional firefighters from multiple states.
11:43This fire is still 0% contained.
11:46Some historic parts of the canyon, though, already destroyed, including the Grand Canyon
11:50Lodge.
11:51And in Colorado, incredible new images from the Turner Gulch fire quadrupling in size.
11:56Evacuations are underway.
11:58Back here in the Grand Canyon, crews have been battling two wildfires for days now.
12:02But officials tell me it is still too soon to say how quickly they can get the fires under
12:06control.
12:07David?
12:08Yeah, even with that smoke, a stunning scene behind you, Faith.
12:11Now to the Colorado dentist on trial, accused of killing his wife of 23 years by allegedly
12:15poisoning her slowly.
12:17And what prosecutors said today, he was putting in her protein shakes.
12:20That trial now underway.
12:22And here's our chief national correspondent, Matt Guppin tonight.
12:24Tonight, prosecutors laying out their case against the former Colorado dentist, accused of murdering
12:30his wife with protein shakes laced with cyanide, arsenic and a chemical commonly found in eye
12:36drops.
12:37Intentionally, people deliberately over the first 10 days ended her life.
12:42Prosecutors say that in March of 2023, James Craig's wife of over 20 years, Angela, the mother
12:47of his six children, began experiencing dizziness, headaches and vomiting.
12:52Investigators say James Craig used his dental clinic's computers to research poisons, logging
12:57searches such as how to make poison and is arsenic detectable in autopsy.
13:03Angela Craig was hospitalized at least three times over 10 days before she died in March
13:08of 2023.
13:08But there isn't no, and you ask yourself, is it my involvement of other women?
13:15Yes.
13:16We exclusively interviewed the so-called other woman, a respected orthodontist named Karen
13:20Cain, their relationship playing out in texts and phone calls, though she says it never
13:25got physical.
13:26Do you think that James Craig allegedly poisoned his wife to clear the deck so he could be with
13:33you?
13:33There's no way I motive.
13:35There's been no planning a future together.
13:39And in court today, the defense attorney for the dentist tried to paint the picture that
13:43James Craig's wife, Angela, may have been suicidal.
13:46She was broken.
13:48And in fact, by her own words, she was broken.
13:52She was struggling.
13:54And David, the prosecution says that that is just another lie from James Craig.
13:58They say he also tried to fabricate evidence to show that his wife was suicidal, even plotted
14:04to try to have the lead investigator in this case killed.
14:08James Craig has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges, David.
14:11Matt Gubbin following this trial for us.
14:13Thanks, Matt.
14:13We turn to the war in Ukraine, and tonight, President Trump denying reports that he told
14:17President Zelensky to strike deeper into Russia and Vladimir Putin's response.
14:22Let's get right to Ian Pannell reporting from Ukraine again tonight.
14:24Ian.
14:25Yeah, David, President Trump flatly denying reports.
14:29He asked President Zelensky whether he could strike deeper into Russia.
14:32Trump saying Zelensky shouldn't target Moscow and that the U.S. isn't planning to give him
14:37long-range missiles.
14:38But Trump saying he's increasingly disappointed with Putin's ongoing heavy bombing of Ukraine.
14:44More weapon systems now to be given to NATO to help Ukraine.
14:48And the clock started running on this 50-day deadline for Russia to agree to a peace deal.
14:53But for Ukrainians, 50 days is too long.
14:56It means more bombing.
14:57And the Kremlin's response has already been heard.
15:00More attacks tonight.
15:01David.
15:01Ian Pannell, our thanks to you again tonight.
15:03When we come back, the plane right into a neighborhood.
15:06Witnesses racing to save the passengers on board and what they did to get them out.
15:10Also, the 911 call involving Beyonce's stolen new music.
15:13The recordings on video in a computer taken from an SUV.
15:17You're going to hear that 911 call.
15:18And the images tonight, the boat in flames.
15:20Five people on board.
15:21A dog also on board this boat.
15:23What they did to save them in a moment.
15:25Tonight, we are now hearing from the neighbors who raced in to save those passengers after that terrifying plane crash in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
15:33You remember the video showing the small plane slamming into the neighborhood.
15:36Neighbors then using an axe, a fire extinguisher, and a hose to rescue everyone.
15:41It was that loud.
15:42It was like a big boom.
15:43So I walked outside, you know, and I see a plane on fire.
15:48So I immediately jump into action.
15:51All four people on board survived.
15:53Tonight, dramatic video showing the race to rescue five people and a dog from a burning boat.
15:57This is Jacksonville, Florida, the sailboat on the St. Johns River.
16:00A father and son on a nearby boat rushing over to help.
16:03Everyone and the dog were all saved.
16:06When we come back here tonight, the incredible images coming in.
16:09Saving a dolphin here in the east.
16:11And the 911 call involving Beyonce's new music stolen from an SUV.
16:15In a moment.
16:15To the index of other news, the 911 call reporting Beyonce's unreleased music stolen in Atlanta.
16:22The suspect breaking into her choreographer's SUV, stealing hard drives with the music and video footage.
16:28Like I work with someone who is like of a high status and I really need my computer and everything.
16:39Beyonce was in Atlanta for her Cowboy Carter tour.
16:42A remarkable dolphin rescue in South Carolina's Bluffton Lagoon.
16:46A dolphin named Lucky stranded in the lagoon.
