01:52Good evening.
01:52Thanks for joining us on this Saturday.
01:54I'm Witt Johnson.
01:55We begin tonight with breaking news.
01:56The desperate search for the missing after catastrophic and deadly flash flooding in central Texas.
02:02More than 40 people are dead in Kerr County, including more than a dozen children swept away in the fast-moving floodwaters.
02:09These new images showing the devastation and destruction at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp where dozens are still missing.
02:18But the total number of those unaccounted for is unclear.
02:21The floodwaters swiftly washing away homes and vehicles, leaving behind a trail of mud, debris, and heartbreak.
02:28In neighboring Travis County, flash flooding also turning deadly, with several still missing.
02:33The severe weather threat in Texas is not over yet.
02:36And now a new tropical storm, Chantal, taking aim at the southeast.
02:40Our weather team is standing by with the forecast.
02:43But first, ABC's Mireya Villarreal leads us off tonight from Kerrville, Texas.
02:48Tonight, deadly flash flooding engulfing several parts of Texas.
02:52Authorities say at least 40 killed.
02:55Three deaths are being linked to major flooding in Travis County overnight, and at least 11 are still missing.
03:01The San Gabriel River today also overflowing.
03:04Flash floods there prompting evacuations.
03:08And in Kerrville, just northwest of San Antonio, first responders continue to battle treacherous conditions
03:13as the death toll rises to at least 43, 15 of them children.
03:19Authorities now saying they are moving from rescue to recovery.
03:24What makes you feel like this has gone from rescue to potential recovery?
03:29Because there is a difference.
03:30We will eventually get to the recovery.
03:32Crews searching for the countless still missing from those devastating Fourth of July floods.
03:37But those still missing include over two dozen young girls from Camp Mystic.
03:42These images showing the devastation at the campsite.
03:45The beds in the cabins completely upended.
03:48An all-girls Christian summer camp that hosted over 750 kids.
03:54As far as unknown other missing, we do not have an accurate count, and we don't even want to begin to estimate at this time.
03:59The Waterlooper River rising 26 feet in less than an hour.
04:02This video showing some of the aftermath.
04:05Debris stuck in the upper branches of these trees in Centerpoint, Texas.
04:10Help is coming!
04:12This woman clinging onto a tree after she was swept downriver.
04:16Lorena Guillen runs Howdy's Restaurant nearby.
04:19For the Fourth of July in Kerrville, when it was perfect weather for fireworks, this place was packed.
04:27I mean, every single hotel, RV park was full.
04:31She says all the RVs here were washed away.
04:34We had all the EMS and rescue team trying to save a family that was at the river, clinging for life, and I couldn't get to them.
04:43You heard them?
04:44We all heard them.
04:46This area got more than a foot of rain in a matter of hours, swelling the Guadalupe River,
04:51sending floodwaters streaming into neighborhoods and communities, overwhelming campgrounds.
04:57You can see the absolute power of this storm and the raging floodwaters by looking just right behind me.
05:03You can see a trailer wrapped around this giant tree, and across the river, you can see what looks like a mobile home.
05:10Pierce Boyette and his brother Ruffin managing to escape from nearby Camp Lahuna with the help of heroic staff.
05:17The flood started getting bigger, and it was going up to, we had bunk beds in our cabins,
05:22and it was going up to the top bunk, and we had one choice, and we had to swim out of our cabins.
05:28The White House monitoring the situation, the Trump administration saying they intend to help.
05:34The federal government needs to be here for the support and extra resources on the ground as well, and that is what we are doing.
05:41Maria Villarreal joining us now from Kerrville.
05:44Well, Maria, we can see some of that debris behind you.
05:46Give us a sense of what people there in Texas are going to be facing in the hours ahead.
05:52Well, you know, Whit, as of right now, we do know the disaster declaration has been expanded for the state of Texas,
05:57adding six more new counties.
05:58The federal government also saying they're going to issue their own disaster declaration to help out as well.
06:03But as you just mentioned, this is all about the community.
06:05You can see right behind me, people are cleaning up.
06:08These are all volunteers doing whatever they can to pick up the debris,
06:12knowing that over the next few days, we're going to see more weather hitting this area.
06:17Whit?
06:17A long and difficult road ahead.
06:19Maria, thank you.
06:20Let's get right to meteorologist Danny Beckstrom from our New York station, WABC.
06:24And, Danny, you're tracking both the flood emergency in Texas and the new tropical threat in the southeast.
06:29Yeah, well, we have the updated track for tropical storm, Chantal,
06:31but we'll start first with the rain in central Texas because heavy rain continues to fall near Austin.
06:36I know that's not what we want to hear.
06:38This does wrap up tonight with the flash flood.
06:40Watches expiring around 10 p.m. local time.
06:42But for now, the flooding continues in parts of Travis County, Williamson County and Burnett County.
06:47Now let's talk tropics as tropical storm, Chantal, crawls toward the coastline.
06:51Conditions will deteriorate tonight with landfall expected between about midnight and sunrise tomorrow morning.
06:56Heavy rain, gusty wind.
06:57We have tropical storm warnings in effect near the coast, including Myrtle Beach.
07:01Again, the heavy rain, 2 to 4 inches, can produce flash flooding.
07:04The gusty wind can cause problems as well.
07:07Continued to see the scattered showers and storms through Sunday morning in the Carolinas.
07:11But even as the remnants move inland with rough surf and rip currents will continue to impact the southeast coast through the remainder of the holiday weekend.
07:17Multiple threats will be watching.
07:19Danny Beckstrom, thank you.
07:20We appreciate it.
07:21And as we just noted there, Chantal is bringing the risk of dangerous rip currents to parts of the east coast.
07:26Coming as many are flocking to the beaches over the long holiday weekend.
07:30Some beaches advising people to stay out of the water.
07:33And several people were injured after fireworks exploded on a boat in Alabama during Fourth of July celebrations.
07:39It's just the latest in a series of fireworks mishaps, some of them deadly.
07:43Here's ABC's Morgan Norwood.
07:46Tonight, as tropical storm Chantal gains strength off the southeast coast, parts of northeast Florida to the Outer Banks of North Carolina on alert for dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents as millions flock to beaches over this July 4th holiday weekend.
08:00Watch as this lifeguard frantically swims out to help two surfers on Myrtle Beach caught in the chop.
08:06In Florida, severe weather creating even more danger.
08:09A family of three struck by lightning.
08:11A 17-year-old girl rushed to the hospital.
08:13And it's not just the storms keeping people out of the ocean.
08:17More than two dozen beaches closed across the country due to harmful levels of bacteria.
08:21And while many gathered to celebrate on the water, a series of boat explosions rocking popular hotspots.
08:26In Tennessee, a massive explosion setting off the entire arsenal of fireworks on this barge.
08:32Oh my God!
08:35No!
08:36No!
08:37This pontoon boat on Alabama's Lake Martin exploding Friday during what officials say was an unpermitted fireworks display.
08:44Six people rushed to the hospital.
08:46We're contacting an outside agency to assist with the injuries.
08:50It's going to be multiple injuries.
08:52And in neighboring Georgia, flames tearing through this boat after a blast injuring seven people, including a five-year-old.
08:58Another celebration turning tragic in California, where an eight-year-old girl was killed after authorities say illegal fireworks misfired in her direction.
09:06One person arrested.
09:09And with the holiday weekend wrapping up, the focus now is on getting home Sunday.
09:14Tomorrow expected to be the busiest travel day, both in the skies and on the roads.
09:18Experts say it's best to get going early or leave late when you'll run into that heavy traffic between 2 and 6 p.m.
09:25Yeah, got to plan ahead.
09:26Morgan Norwood, thank you.
09:28Now to the union strike in Philadelphia.
09:30Negotiations resuming today after garbage workers were among the nearly 10,000 people to walk off the job five days ago seeking better pay and benefits.
09:39The trash is now piling up and 4th of July celebrations impacted when major stars canceled their performances.
09:47Here's ABC's Perry Russell.
09:49As bags of garbage pile up in Philadelphia.
09:52It's starting to smell already, as y'all can see.
09:55Tonight, contract negotiations resume for the thousands of union workers on strike.
10:00More than 9,000 members from District Council 33 demanding higher wages.
10:04Their jobs include fixing roads, answering 911 calls, and picking up trash in the city.
10:12Grammy winners Jasmine Sullivan and LL Cool J, headliners for the city's Independence Day concert, canceling their performances.
10:19There's absolutely no way that I could perform across a picket line.
10:25Members of D.C. 33 reportedly make on average $46,000 a year.
10:30Union president Greg Boulware says he wants incremental wage increases.
10:33Our place right now is $555,000 over the course of three years.
10:37Mayor Sherelle Parker says the city offered a more than 13% wage increase over her four-year term.
10:43I will not put the fiscal stability of the city of Philadelphia in jeopardy for no one.
10:49The mayor striking a softer tone yesterday.
10:52We are working extremely hard doing everything that we can do, Philadelphia, to reach a fair and fiscally responsible contract.
11:00A judge ordered workers from the medical examiner's office who were on strike to get back to work.
11:05The city says there were delays in picking up dead bodies.
11:09A 19-year-old was shot and killed on Thursday, his body lying in the street for hours.
11:14Whit?
11:14Wow, just awful news.
11:15Perry Russom, thank you.
11:16We head overseas now to the American aid workers injured in Gaza.
11:20Authorities say militants threw grenades at two workers with a controversial operation backed by Israel and the U.S.
11:27It comes as hopes for a ceasefire deal are fading what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now saying about the latest proposal from Hamas.
11:36Here's ABC's Inez De La Quaterra.
11:39Tonight, ceasefire negotiations facing a new setback.
11:43The Israeli Prime Minister's office saying in a statement,
11:45The changes Hamas is requesting to make to the Qatari proposal were delivered to us last night and are unacceptable to Israel.
11:53This after Hamas said it had submitted a positive response to the U.S.-backed 60-day ceasefire proposal
11:59that would see the release of 10 living hostages and 18 hostage bodies
12:03in exchange for the release of a still undetermined number of Palestinian prisoners.
12:07President Trump just yesterday saying,
12:09I'm very optimistic, but you know, look at changes from day to day.
12:13But the big sticking point remains.
12:15Hamas wants any ceasefire deal to lay out an end to the war,
12:18something that, so far, the Israelis have not budged on.
12:21Meanwhile, two Americans working with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation were injured today
12:26after two grenades were thrown at an aid distribution site south of Khan Yunus, according to the GHF.
12:32The workers are now in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.
12:35But the GHF's practices have been widely criticized.
12:38According to the U.N., more than 500 Palestinians have been killed over the last four weeks
12:44on the way to collect food at GHF sites in Gaza.
12:48The Israelis will still be sending a team to Doha to continue negotiations,
12:51while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will be meeting with President Trump in Washington next week.
12:57Witt.
12:58Inez de la Quaterra, thank you.
13:00Now to President Trump's so-called Big Beautiful Bill, ramping up the immigration crackdown
13:05with $170 billion, a massive and historic infusion of cash for detention and deportation.
13:12Here's ABC's senior White House correspondent, Selena Wang.
13:16Tonight, the first image of the eight Trump administration detainees heading to South Sudan
13:21after the Supreme Court cleared the way for their removal to the war-torn nation.
13:26The undocumented migrants had been held at a military base in Djibouti as the legal battle played out.
13:32All of the men have been convicted of serious crimes, but only one is from South Sudan.
13:38This comes as President Trump celebrates a major political victory,
13:43signing into law a sweeping domestic bill that makes a historic $170 billion investment in immigration enforcement.
13:51So you have the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending cut, the largest border security investment in American history.
13:57We want to have strong borders.
13:59The new law includes funding for the border wall, more detention beds,
14:03and $100 billion for immigration and customs enforcement.
14:07The administration promising more detention centers like this,
14:12dubbed Alligator Alcatraz by state and federal officials, opening this week in Florida.
14:17Two hundred Marines also sent to the state to help with immigration enforcement.
14:23We've got to work with the farmers.
14:24But the president acknowledging the hardships for farmers who employ a large percentage of undocumented workers,
14:30floating the idea for allowing those migrants to stay in the U.S.
14:34If a farmer is willing to vouch for these people, in some way, Christy,
14:39I think we're going to have to just say that's going to be good, right?
14:41We don't want to do it where we take all of the workers off the farms.
14:45Despite Trump's repeated promises to protect farmers,
14:49immigration raids like this one on a strawberry field in California have continued.
14:55We wake up in fear, this farm worker says.
14:58Many are concerned that if they go to work, they won't ever come back.
15:03And with those immigration raids are putting cities across America on edge,
15:07especially in Los Angeles, where some of those July 4th celebrations were canceled.
15:11Fear is keeping many undocumented migrants inside, skipping school, work, even family gatherings,
15:18afraid of being swept up and detained.
15:21Whit?
15:21Selena Wang, our thanks to you tonight.
15:23Now to Wimbledon and the American knocking out the defending champ,
15:27Emma Navarro, taking down Barbara Krychikova.
15:30Let's get right to ABC's Ashton Singh.
15:32And Ashton, the Americans having an impact.
15:34That's right, Whit.
15:37Another intense day of matchups here as Wimbledon wraps up its round three.
15:40Only four Americans remain, though, as 34 seed Brendan Nakashima lost in a match that lasted over five hours.
15:47Ben Shelton's serve, though, was too much against Hungary's Marton Fuchovic as he beat him in straight sets.
15:52He now joins Taylor Fritz as the only American man to advance to the round of 16.
15:57The last time an American man has won Wimbledon was Pete Sampras back in 2000.
16:01On the women's side, American Emma Navarro came back after going down in the first set
16:05to defeat defending champion Wimbledon champion Barbara Krychikova, who's playing through injury.
16:10Navarro now joins American Amanda Amenasova as the only American women to be in that round of 16.
16:16You can catch more Wimbledon action tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. right here on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN+.
16:22Whit?
16:23All right, we'll be watching.
16:24Ashton, thank you.
16:25There's much more ahead on World News Tonight this Saturday.
16:28An emotional farewell in Portugal.
16:29Teammates honor the soccer star Diogo Jota with a poignant tribute.
16:35And the fast-growing wildfire raging in California affects now being felt 100 miles away.
16:41Next tonight, California's largest wildfire of the year exploding in size.
16:46The Madre Fire expanding to 79,000 acres in just 72 hours.
16:51The flames 10% contained, tearing through rural parts of Los Padres National Forest.
16:56Smoke drifting 100 miles south to the Los Angeles area, prompting air quality alerts.
17:03The fire's cause still undetermined.
17:05Today, friends and loved ones saying their final goodbyes to soccer star Diogo Jota.
17:10Teammates from Portugal's national team and his Liverpool club filing into a church near his hometown.
17:16One holding a wreath bearing the number 20 he wore in England's Premier League.
17:20Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, laid to rest two days after dying in a car crash in Spain.
17:27A former coach saying their spirit will be with them forever.
17:31When we come back here, remembering Julian McMahon, a former co-star, reflects on the actor's death.
17:37To the index now, fellow actors remembering Julian McMahon, the Nip Tuck star, died Wednesday in Florida after battling cancer.
17:46The Australian-born actor's first big U.S. TV role was in the series Charmed, co-star Holly Marie Combs posting on social media.
17:55I hope you find our lady friend and dance in those rose petals, a reference to late co-star Shannon Doherty, who died from cancer last July.
18:04Julian McMahon was 56.
18:06Still ahead, the shark attack survivors now turning pain into purpose.
18:14America's wrong tonight.
18:15The shark attack survivors adapting, then uplifting.
18:20We first introduce you to J.J. Reeder Jr. nearly three years ago.
18:2411 years old at the time, he was bitten by a bull shark while snorkeling with family in Florida.
18:29I'm happy to be alive.
18:31Undergoing four surgeries, eventually losing his lower right leg.
18:35Speaking to our Victor Okendo.
18:36I want to get back in the ocean.
18:39Ten weeks after the attack, he went back to that same reef.
18:42I did not want the hospital or the shark attack to be my greatest fear.
18:46And recently, J.J. got his first surfing lesson from adaptive surfer and fellow shark attack survivor, Mike Coots.
18:53Shortly after my 18th birthday, went out for a surf session like any other morning.
18:57As the shark came out of the water and grabbed onto me, I became an amputee right then and there.
19:01Mike turned his pain into purpose, now teaching other amputees to do things they never thought possible.
19:09Mike and J.J. connecting in Oceanside, California.
19:12And we're both going to go surfing today.
19:14I look up to him because of him facing his fear and going back into the ocean.
19:19But this lesson about much more than surfing, a clinic on how to inspire and overcome challenges.
19:27I feel in some sense like the luckiest amputee in the world.
19:29Days like today of surfing with J.J., these are the reasons why I'm here.
19:34Amazing work.
19:35Keep it up.
19:36I'm Whit Johnson in New York.
19:37Have a great night.
19:38Thank you for making World News Tonight with David Muir, America's most watched newscast.
