00:00July 15th, The Precious Blood, The Seal of Covenant Love

00:04When God makes a covenant, He seals it with blood.

00:08From the Old Testament sacrifices to the Paschal Lamb,

00:12blood was always a sign that something sacred and binding had taken place.

00:16But no covenant was more perfect, more enduring,

00:20or more intimate than the one Jesus made at the Last Supper.

00:23This is my blood of the new and eternal covenant,

00:26which will be poured out for you and for many.

00:31This covenant is not a contract.

00:34It is a total giving of self.

00:37Jesus bound Himself to us not only by promise, but by sacrifice.

00:43The blood He shed ratified that promise forever.

00:48It is a covenant not written on stone, but on hearts.

00:51It is renewed at every Mass, offered at every altar,

00:56and received in every worthy communion.

01:00His blood is not merely a sign.

01:02It is the living seal of His love.

01:04And it is eternal.

01:06Earthly covenants can be broken, forgotten, or changed.

01:10But the covenant sealed in Christ's blood cannot be undone.

01:14Even when we are unfaithful, He remains faithful.

01:18His blood does not accuse, it pleads.

01:20It does not grow cold, it burns.

01:24And it calls us to respond, not with obligation,

01:28but with love that mirrors the gift we've been given.

01:31St. Bonaventure, whose feast we celebrate today,

01:35was known as the Seraphic Doctor,

01:37because of the burning love he held for the crucified Christ.

01:40His writings are saturated with devotion to the passion and the blood of Jesus.

01:46He taught that contemplation of the wounds of Christ

01:49leads the soul into union with God.

01:53He who desires to go on advancing, he wrote,

01:56should meditate continually on the passion of Christ.

01:59For Bonaventure, the blood was not only theology,

02:03it was the lifeblood of prayer,

02:05the doorway into divine intimacy.

02:08The blood of the covenant invites us into that same intimacy.

02:12Jesus did not die simply to forgive us.

02:14He died to unite us to Himself forever.

02:17The next time you receive the Eucharist, remember this.

02:21You are receiving the blood of the eternal covenant.

02:24You are holding in your soul the promise of eternal love.

02:28Let us pray.

02:30Jesus, I praise you for the blood of the new and eternal covenant.

02:34Let it never become routine to me.

02:37Help me, through the wisdom of St. Bonaventure,

02:40to enter more deeply into the mystery of your passion

02:42and to live in covenant love with you.

02:46Bind me to your sacred heart

02:47and let your precious blood be the seal of our union now and forever.
