00:00
For the third time in around a month we are talking heatwave.
00:04
Temperatures are going to be ticking up through the rest of this week.
00:07
Now there's not a lot of sign of much heat to start the week.
00:11
Temperatures generally on the cool side through Monday and Tuesday's values are still at or around
00:16
or even touch below average for most places.
00:19
But starting to see a bit of warmth across the south, 24, 25 degrees possible here.
00:24
But generally on the cool side because we've got low pressure sitting to the east
00:27
and the breeze has been coming down from the north.
00:30
These weather fronts providing a few heavy showers overnight.
00:33
But we need to take a look at the bigger picture and out to the southwest.
00:36
This area of high pressure is slowly going to be creeping towards us.
00:40
At the same time though we've got these weather fronts creeping towards us from another area of low pressure.
00:45
They'll be edging in during the course of Tuesday bringing cloud and a little bit of rain at times
00:50
into the west of Northern Ireland and pushing into the Western Isles all set.
00:54
Still a few showers just grazing into Lincolnshire and Norfolk perhaps on Tuesday morning.
00:59
But they'll be clearing away for the vast majority.
01:02
It is a dry and a sunny day and the winds will be lighter than they were on Monday for most as well.
01:08
These weather fronts though aren't going away.
01:10
They'll continue to creep their way into parts of Scotland, maybe sink a little further south.
01:15
And that high pressure, yes, it's trying to get in but it's not fully with us yet.
01:20
So again on Wednesday quite a lot of cloud in Western Scotland, outbreaks of rain and drizzle
01:24
perhaps along the north coast of Northern Ireland too.
01:27
And some thicker cloud across England and Wales, maybe even the odd shower come the afternoon
01:31
for the Midlands, perhaps South Wales.
01:33
But they'll be very isolated.
01:35
For most, again, it's a dry day.
01:38
Temperatures starting to pick up.
01:39
28 degrees across the southeast and many places by Wednesday will be above average.
01:44
The main exception will be the west coast of Scotland where we stay on the cool side with
01:49
a fairly brisk wind and some light rain and drizzle.
01:52
But even here, the high pressure takes control and pushes those weather fronts further away
01:57
to the north by the time we get to Thursday.
01:59
So again, for most places, it's going to be dry and certainly under the influence of this
02:04
high pressure.
02:05
That means the air is sinking.
02:06
There'll be a lot of fine and sunny weather.
02:08
Could just be a little bit of low cloud at times on these eastern coasts and still a few
02:12
showers, particularly early on across the Western Isles and the highlands of Scotland.
02:17
But with that weather front shimmies away, we should see things turning drier here.
02:21
Better chance of seeing more sunshine.
02:24
Certainly going to see those temperatures ticking up under the influence of that high
02:27
pressure day on day.
02:28
The sunshine will lift those numbers high on Thursday.
02:32
Probably the first day this week, we'll get up to 30 degrees Celsius.
02:35
A little bit cooler perhaps on some of these coasts to the east, particularly so if we do
02:39
see any of that mist and low clouds and again cooler across the northwest of Scotland.
02:45
The bigger picture for Friday shows that high pressure completely in control, just edging
02:50
a little bit further east.
02:52
We may again see a bit more of an easterly breeze, which could keep things a little cooler
02:56
around the coast of East Anglia and the southeast.
02:59
And again, the potential for some mist and low cloud on those eastern coasts.
03:03
But for most places, dry and sunny sums it up.
03:07
Again, a bit more cloud maybe in the far northwest.
03:09
But even here, I'm hopeful for a bit more sunshine and temperatures ticking up.
03:12
Look at that, open up into 23 degrees Celsius.
03:15
So the warmth is moving north as we go towards the end of this week.
03:19
And in the south, those temperatures, again, a little higher on Friday.
03:23
Probably get to 32 somewhere, certainly 30, 31 in Birmingham and London.
03:28
And even the east coast, as that breeze starts to ease, we'll see those temperatures lifting.
03:32
This map shows the temperature compared to the average, the mid-month average.
03:38
And a subtle shift further west with the temperatures for this particular heat wave.
03:42
So it's going to be more noticeable, I suspect, for East Wales, westernmost counties of England,
03:47
from Dorset, Somerset up to Lancashire, but also in and around parts of Yorkshire as well.
03:52
That's where we'll see the highest anomaly, the biggest difference from the average temperature.
03:57
So a bit of a shift compared to the last one, which was more focused across the east.
04:01
Notice the east coast will be much closer to average with a bit of a breeze coming in.
04:07
And the warmth is extending further north.
04:09
So by the end of the week, we're well above average across eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland too.
04:14
Will it last into the weekends?
04:15
Well, yes, it should do.
04:17
The high pressure is moving to the east and these weather fronts are getting closer.
04:22
This is a cold front.
04:23
So behind it, that's where the cooler, fresher air is.
04:27
But we're still with the warm, very warm air across the UK on Saturday.
04:31
And although it looks as if that cold front could push across, it's not going to.
04:34
It's going to get a bit of a ripple on it.
04:36
The high pressure maintains its strength.
04:38
And that weather front looks like wiggling, staying away to the west for the time being.
04:42
And the heat likely to persist through Sunday again across the UK.
04:47
Signs that the cooler air may start to push in through the early part of next week.
04:50
But a bit of uncertainty about timing on that.
04:53
A couple of things to note this week.
04:55
UV will be high or very high.
04:57
Grass pollen levels will also be high or very high.
05:00
Lots of good advice on the Met Office website about how to deal with that.
05:03
If you're a hay fever sufferer.
05:05
And if you're out for any length of time in the sunshine, make sure you've got a hat on and the sunscreen.
05:09
