Like yesterday, today is going to be be hot and sunny across the UK. However, there will be a few showers in central England at midday and these will move north-eastwards and affect northern England and potentially southern Scotland and as well later in the afternoon. These showers could be quite thundery in places. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the afternoon of 21/06/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Jonathan Vautery.

00:00Hello there, good afternoon. It certainly has been a warm and muggy start to the weekend.
00:06Provisionally, Northern Ireland has recorded its warmest June night on record, Friday into
00:10Saturday. And this hot and humid air is being dragged up a little bit from parts of continental
00:15Europe. But we also have low pressure out in the Atlantic, and that is driving weather
00:19fronts across the UK, providing instability in the air and the perfect conditions to start
00:25sparking off some thunderstorms as that hot and humid air rises rapidly. So as we head throughout
00:31the day today, you could see some sharp showers pushing their way steadily northwards, a few
00:36rumbles of thunder on a more isolated basis, at least during daylight hours. There will still be
00:41some sunny spells in between all of that, perhaps a little hazy at times. But in that sunshine, it is
00:46certainly going to be feeling hot for many of us. Central eastern areas of England likely seeing the
00:52highest temperatures today, at least 31 to 32 degrees Celsius. If we see enough sunshine into
00:58the afternoon, we could creep up a little bit higher than that as well. Whilst Wales, Northern
01:03Ireland and Scotland all recorded their warmest day of 2025 yesterday, for the latter two, it is going
01:10to be a slightly less warm day today, a touch fresher, but still certainly around the mid-20s is possible
01:16for parts of Northern Ireland and into central areas of Scotland. Also worth bearing in mind that
01:22grass pollen levels are going to be very high for the vast majority of us today. So if you do suffer
01:28from hay fever, it's definitely something to be wary of when you're heading out this afternoon.
01:34It's particularly into this evening where we hold the greatest potential to see some severe
01:39thunderstorms developing. And there is a thunderstorm warning that comes into force this evening across
01:44parts of Northern England and into southern areas of Scotland. It's here where we have the potential
01:49for some large hail, frequent lightning, gusty winds around 50 miles an hour, and some torrential
01:54downpours as possible as this system slowly pushes its way northwards. So do take care over the course
02:00of this evening and into the night. There is the potential for a few isolated thunderstorms to
02:04develop elsewhere as well. We could see a band of sharp showers pushing across Northern Ireland
02:08and eventually into parts of Western Scotland overnight as well. For the northwest though,
02:13it should be a fresher, less humid night to come, around 13, 14 degrees Celsius for some locations
02:20here. But we are still holding on to that heat and humidity, particularly across the east.
02:25Locally, parts of south eastern England could be around 20 degrees Celsius as we start off Sunday
02:30morning. Despite some of that early cloud that will gradually clear its way off the southeast,
02:36it is these areas that will hold on to the best sunshine over the course of Sunday. Another bright,
02:41hot day to come here. Up towards the northwest, there will be more cloud, rash of showers pushing
02:46their way in, again potentially on the sharp and heavy side. And for all of us, it will be a breezier
02:50day, and that breeze may actually make it feel more comfortable compared to the hot conditions we've
02:55had around of late. The heat though is still in play across the southeast, whilst not as warm as likely
03:01we're going to be seeing today. 27 degrees Celsius is certainly possible here. Up towards north and west,
03:07where we've seen that wind change to more of a westerly direction, it is going to be feeling
03:12fresher. Temperatures, particularly for parts of Northern Ireland and western Scotland, closer
03:16towards average for the time of year, now around the mid to high teens. Those showers will continue
03:22to push their way through as we head into Sunday evening, and that sets us up for a rather changeable
03:28week to come. There'll be further showers around at times, potential for some thunderstorms in places
03:33as well, and longer spells of rain, but also some sunny spells trying to poke their way through.
03:38For all of us, it'll be fresher and less hot compared to this weekend, but still pleasant when
03:44we see any of those sunnier spells developing. There'll be plenty more updates on all of that
03:48on our YouTube channel, so do subscribe, and we'll see you again here very soon. Enjoy the rest of your
03:52day. Bye-bye.
