00:00In a sleepy Hampshire village, battle lines have been drawn.
00:07Five Chinese teachers have come to shake up the British education system.
00:14Discipline is really important. Without discipline, you don't learn well.
00:21British pupils are falling behind in the international race.
00:25Our students' academic achievement is three years ahead of you. Why?
00:32The Chinese have come to prove that even a high-achieving school has a lot to learn.
00:38Cheers!
00:40We are here to bring you the unique Chinese style of teaching.
00:46Class begins!
00:49Good morning, class!
00:52Everybody can get full marks. Just use your brain.
00:56What brain?
00:58Spend your life.
01:00But just one week into the experiment...
01:02X is the size of AB.
01:05I don't get it.
01:07Things haven't gone quite to plan.
01:09This is why you guys learn less than the Chinese students learn.
01:13The Chinese way of teaching has produced a rebellion in the class.
01:17Who the hell does she think she is, saying that I'm dumb?
01:20And now the Chinese teachers face an uphill battle...
01:23Phoebe, listen to me!
01:25..to bring 50 British teenagers under control.
01:28You embarrass all Wuhan students at a school.
01:36OK, I can see you.
01:38One, two, three!
01:41At Bow Hunt School in Hampshire, the Chinese school is entering its second week.
01:5750 Year 9 pupils, aged 13 and 14, are being taught the Chinese way.
02:04But so far, the regime of discipline, hard work and competition isn't quite working.
02:11Guys, can you be quiet, please? Everyone, keep it down!
02:15Guys, keep it down!
02:17Alex, be serious!
02:19In China, students are taught from an early age to respect their parents, their teachers and their country.
02:26Chinese education is not only delivering the subject knowledge.
02:30Chinese education is to cultivating a human being.
02:35We teach them how to be a sensible, responsible citizens of the country.
02:41Because we serve our country. That's what we say.
02:45In China, the week starts with the important flag-raising ceremony.
02:52For flag-raising, first, it's a way to show the respect to the country.
02:59A sense of belongings.
03:02We're raising flags because it reminds you, you are a citizen of China.
03:07And you have the responsibility to serve this country when you've grown up
03:12and to make this country better, richer.
03:16So, every day, raising flags, singing the national anthem,
03:20that gives you that sense of responsibility.
03:25Stand still, please!
03:27And face that way!
03:30Face the national flag.
03:34But respect for the flag and the national anthem doesn't seem to cut it
03:44with the average British teenager on a cold Monday morning.
03:52I don't see the point in raising a flag, but what we do, so...
03:57You know that's your flag. You don't need to see it every day.
04:00You might sing the national anthem.
04:14It was pretty boring, to be honest.
04:16I didn't really see the point in it either,
04:18because it's just raising a flag into the air.
04:20And, yeah, nobody's really going to see it
04:22because we're not allowed on the field, so...
04:24Walk with purpose, walk with purpose.
04:33Emily, put it away.
04:35New cell phone in class.
04:37Li Aiween works in a large school in Nanjing.
04:41This is her first taste of teaching British kids.
04:44Now class begins!
04:46Stand up!
04:47Chinese pupils all study social education.
04:50A subject designed to pass on traditional cultural values
04:54to the next generation.
04:56Confucius is an ancient sage to the Chinese people.
05:00OK.
05:01And I bet his philosophy will influence you too.
05:07The first one means, if you don't want it,
05:10please don't give it to others.
05:12Understand?
05:13The second one is, you need to be very smart,
05:18very quick at things,
05:19but you need to be very careful with your words,
05:22so that it will not hurt others.
05:24According to our culture,
05:26students are born to obey the rules
05:30and respect the authority.
05:32That's also, you know, a part of Confucianism.
05:35So everybody knows that.
05:37It's very important for us to listen to the teachers
05:42and the parents.
05:47In China, kids are under huge pressure from their parents.
05:51The one-child policy means that in many parts of the country,
05:54almost everyone is an only child.
05:57The parents know they just have one child.
06:02So they spend all they can spend to investing on their children.
06:09So whatever they need, they will buy for them.
06:13A lot of parents give their kids extra classes and extra homework.
06:19Some of the students, they go to school five days a week,
06:23and they spend the whole weekends outside to attend different classes.
06:28How much do you do today?
06:30Yes.
06:31How much time do you do?
06:33I have to do two hours.
06:35Do you do two hours?
06:36I do feel it's a lot of pressure on us.
06:40Not only your parents are watching you,
06:42your grandparents are also.
06:44And that makes a child, a single child in a family,
06:48feels very difficult.
06:50But I do think that's out of love.
06:54Children should follow their parents and love their parents, right?
06:59You know, according to Confucius, in Confucianism,
07:02parents are always right.
07:04Parents aren't always right.
07:06You have to adjust yourself to be suitable to the society
07:13instead of everything to suit to you.
07:17For some of the free spirits in Bowhunt Year 9, like Angelina,
07:21this is a tough message to take.
07:24Angelina, stand up.
07:26In my opinion, I think that's right.
07:28I think you should be your own person and not just...
07:30Yeah.
07:31You should have to conform while the people don't be.
07:35You should be who you are.
07:42I really dislike how they teach social education in China.
07:46Your parents are always right.
07:49No.
07:50Yeah.
07:51If they're...
07:52No.
07:53They could be racist.
07:54They could be homophobic.
07:55They could be sexist.
07:56They could be misogynistic.
07:58What's that?
07:59Against women, basically.
08:00Oh.
08:01No.
08:02But if they say...
08:03If their opinion is always right...
08:05Yeah.
08:06No.
08:07Faced with this alien culture, a quintessentially British rebellion is brewing.
08:18Josh, get ready.
08:20Josh has brought in some tea and a kettle.
08:24Oh, that's hot.
08:25Really hot.
08:26Here we go.
08:27Here we go.
08:28I'm normally super hard working.
08:37And Chinese school, this hasn't happened.
08:40It's just sort of a complete personality change.
08:43If you can rebel against something, can, you know, be different.
08:49Whoa!
08:50Didn't even spill one drop.
08:53I'm being a bit of a rebel at the moment, as you do, you know.
08:58I'm just not that into the Chinese methods of teaching.
09:03And so I was like, oh, I'm going to bring in a kettle,
09:07because I cannot go a few hours without tea.
09:10Where's my tea?
09:11Where's my tea?
09:12Oh.
09:13Josh finds it easier to smuggle in his hot beverage,
09:17because he's at the back of a class of 50.
09:20Now, these elements are the basic MPK.
09:24Do you notice sometimes when you buy fertiliser,
09:27a big bag says MPK?
09:30Yang Jun has taught science in Britain before,
09:33but she's sticking rigorously to the Chinese methods,
09:36delivering notes from the front of the class.
09:39It's really difficult to write and listen to her screeching voice
09:42at the same time.
09:43And like many of the kids, Josh is struggling to adapt.
09:47I definitely think it is more suited for a really hard-working student
09:51who is sort of completely motivated with their education.
09:55Not that I'm not, it's just I find I'm not to that degree
09:59or I'm not in that certain way.
10:01I don't find that funny, Rosie.
10:03Do you not?
10:04I'm actually trying to educate myself.
10:05Well, are you actually? By organising your pins.
10:08I love my pins.
10:10And two, nitrogen in the air is no good.
10:14I really enjoy science and I really like Miss Yang.
10:16I think she's my favourite teacher.
10:18I just love writing and it's just so good.
10:21Like, you're just writing and writing
10:23and then like she's talking and then like you understand it
10:26and then it's really good.
10:27I really like it.
10:29But yeah, I like my English science lessons as well.
10:32But yeah.
10:33I hate it.
10:34I know you hate it.
10:35I'm sorry.
10:39I cannot write a whole paragraph and listen to her.
10:49It's literally impossible.
10:51I'm joking.
10:53Where did you make that?
10:54Where did you get the mark from?
10:55I have never ever seen a student have a cup of tea in the classroom.
11:07It wasn't mine.
11:08Look, next lesson you never, you don't take anything like that anymore.
11:12Where is your mark?
11:14This is not going to happen.
11:16No.
11:17Cheers.
11:18No.
11:19This is not all.
11:20Listen.
11:21It's not that comfortable.
11:23You can't even learn.
11:29And now I'm behind on this
11:31and now she's going to explain some concrete stuff.
11:35I swear you don't bring teens across, Josh.
11:39For four weeks, the pupils in the Chinese school are being taught six different subjects.
11:49They make your heart stronger.
11:51What is your heart here?
11:52Okay.
11:53Objective.
11:54Good.
11:55At the end of the experiment, they'll sit exams in maths, science and Mandarin Chinese.
12:01Their results will be compared to the rest of Bowhunt Year 9 to see which education system
12:06performs best.
12:07What we're going to do today, so we're going to look at finding the surface area of a shape.
12:12So can you write down in your books today's title, which is surface area.
12:16But going into the second week, the Chinese teachers are under pressure and many of the
12:21kids are acting up.
12:23Okay.
12:24Be seated.
12:26Be seated.
12:27This is a test paper.
12:30Keep quiet.
12:31No.
12:32Maths teacher Zhou Heilian is teaching at a much faster Chinese pace.
12:39Okay.
12:40You can start now.
12:41Even the most able students have struggled to keep up.
12:45The level of students quite behind my expectation.
12:52I think the syllabus we're teaching now is kind of slow compared with what we are doing
13:04in China at the same age.
13:06Mr. Zhou teaches in one of China's most prestigious schools and he's proud of his track record when
13:15it comes to results.
13:16Look at this one.
13:17This is part correct.
13:18Yes.
13:19Last year, all but one of his A-level students got an A or A-star.
13:28In China, they have a strong willing to learn.
13:33The parents want their children have the most advanced education.
13:38Who can give me the equation of this line is Y equals 12X.
13:45I've taught so far IGCSE mathematics, Elevore mathematics and further mathematics.
13:53And I would like to be the best in China to teach Elevore math.
13:58Do you think you can make it?
13:59I can make it, yes.
14:01K minus six squared.
14:04And Mr. Zhou is popular with his pupils.
14:07Mr. Zhou's class is quite organised.
14:10And every topic is covered in a well-run way.
14:16So we can almost handle every question in the tests easily.
14:23Mr. Zhou is a very nice teacher and he's very responsible.
14:27He's very patient and helps students a lot.
14:31My math is really awful, but he always helps me with my studies and he's really nice for me.
14:38Homework is to review what you learned today, OK?
14:43Thank you all for today.
14:53OK, class begins. Sit down.
14:55But in the heart of Hampshire, Mr. Zhou's finding that British students aren't quite as appreciative.
15:01He's asked Bohunt's head of maths, Pete Whitworth, to come and observe his class.
15:07What time is the lesson start?
15:09Now.
15:10Now.
15:11What's the lesson?
15:13Maths.
15:14Get in.
15:15I'm hoping to see a good lesson.
15:18Students learning.
15:19They like to think that Bohunt, they want to learn maths.
15:22And they want to do well at it.
15:24So I'm kind of hoping that when I go in, they are focused.
15:27They're still wanting to learn.
15:28They're still enjoying maths.
15:30Shalala.
15:31OK, be seated, please.
15:33I don't know how you play this game, so you know.
15:36No.
15:37What do you do?
15:39OK.
15:40Let's start.
15:41Attention.
15:42Hello.
15:43Absolutely no one is listening.
15:55This is the angle X, which is unknown.
15:59Which is unknown.
16:01Despite his best efforts, Mr. Zhou has completely lost the class.
16:06What did you type into your calculator?
16:11Where is your calculator?
16:12At what point does it become acceptable to use a phone in a maths lesson?
16:16I said it was a phone.
16:17Shocking.
16:19Attention.
16:22So if you look at this one, why will it be, why will it be?
16:29I wasn't prepared for what I saw at all.
16:32They're just sat there talking from the minute they get in to the minute they leave.
16:35Not listening to a word the teacher's saying, and they're saying they don't understand.
16:39Well, you know, listen, stop talking, and I'll put your hand up and ask a few questions.
16:45I will hand out some consolidation homeworks.
16:49Sir, it's our break.
16:50Wait, wait, let me finish.
16:53No.
16:54Attention, please.
16:56Attention, please.
16:57Oh, my goodness.
17:03OK, that's all for today.
17:05OK, all right?
17:06Unbelievable.
17:07Awful.
17:08Genuinely awful.
17:09If I was a teacher and I delivered that lesson, I'd be livid with the students for the way that they've behaved.
17:29It was just like he was teaching a lesson essentially to himself.
17:38As the days pass, the behaviour of the kids gets worse, and the Chinese teachers simply can't control them.
17:45Hello.
17:46Please go back to your seat.
17:52There are a few students.
17:56They're not willing to learn.
17:59They might be willing to learn in Bohang school, but at this particular stage, they just want to have fun here.
18:09I'm worried about their learning.
18:12Luca, put down your wall.
18:16Luca.
18:18I didn't do anything.
18:22That's very rude.
18:24I'm a little bit disappointed by the levels of the students here because I was told that it is one of the top schools in Britain.
18:37Some of the kids have even started leaving the grounds during school time.
18:41It's becoming clear that there's a huge clash of cultures.
18:45Chinese teachers do not have experience in discipline students who have got their freedom of speech and are free to express opinion and are free to challenge authority.
18:59And we are not used to this.
19:02That's why we don't know how to handle it.
19:04I don't think the class really care about the rules, to be honest.
19:08I think it's going to carry on being the way they are.
19:10They're just messing around and not listening, doing stuff they would never do in front of a normal teacher, like just completely blatantly talking over them.
19:19It's just so annoying.
19:22Right, Josh, can you please get out of my room with your mug, please?
19:31Together with your mug.
19:33In Britain, the parents and the whole society doesn't have that high expectation on the children of this age.
19:45They just live the life, you know, as they like.
19:49They can be just to do whatever they want.
19:54They don't have a lot of pressure.
19:56And it doesn't seem like the attitude is about to improve.
20:03No, no, no, you cannot take this to the class room.
20:06This is who?
20:13Who is this?
20:14I have no idea.
20:15I don't know.
20:16Sorry?
20:17Why?
20:18Yes, it's not allowed in the class room.
20:20I don't have a clue who that is.
20:21I don't know who that is.
20:22I've never seen him in my life.
20:24I've never seen him in my life.
20:25A kettle.
20:26Go back to your seat.
20:27It was almost boiled as well.
20:28I had everything ready.
20:29Attention.
20:30Attention.
20:31Attention.
20:32So, Sophie, I can read what you say in your mouth.
20:49It's very rude, okay?
20:51I do hope that our experience of UK students will be mainly based on you.
20:58And we do hope, when we go back, we'll use some unique and a very positive experience.
21:05Okay?
21:06okay but sometimes we do find something not in the right place i don't know who is this but this
21:17electrical scenes totally not allowed in class who would do that it's dangerous
21:28okay we kind of have a responsibility for your safety in school
21:32and i never expect your behavior like this i can tell you be very honest
21:42no no separation anxiety he's gonna lock it up like i'm gonna defy him
21:52i don't think they really like us very much i feel sorry for the teachers we're horrible
21:57this group of 50 is that we're not nice
22:08with things reaching crisis point bowhunt school has decided to intervene
22:14stuart vaughan is bowhunt's head of school and is in charge of enforcing discipline
22:20he believes it's time to step in okay please
22:30these are well-behaved students um even lovely students are being actually quite disrespectful
22:39and that's been quite a shock to us and quite disappointing to us and we think we've probably
22:45reached that point where we need a little bit more additional bowhunt support alongside the chinese
22:52teachers we thought at this point it would make sense for us to take a slightly bigger role
23:01in terms of behavior management
23:06now what i don't want to do is come here today and just tell you what to do or impose an english
23:15behavior management system on you because i think that defeats the purpose of what we're trying to
23:20look at with this experiment but i think there is one thing that we have to work on together
23:26and that is very simply under no circumstances should they be talking when you are talking
23:33so what i'm going to ask you to do is to stop and to wait and to make it clear that you're not going
23:41to carry on if students are carrying on with their own conversations and not showing you enough respect
23:48okay okay if a student carries on you give them a warning and if they carry on after that you refer
23:57them to a bowhunt member of staff and that's all designed to give you more space to do your chinese
24:04teaching what i am going to do is come in tomorrow morning and make that expectation very clear to the
24:13students no matter how they say in a polite way we haven't done our job properly we are here to bring
24:24them the unique chinese style teaching and try to enrich their experience but all we suffering is
24:33the class discipline i might fear how to say a sense of disappointment
24:53no job is easy but i didn't expect teaching here to be so hard
25:03we cannot manage it's a shame on us it embarrasses all of us
25:13dead too dangerous
25:16mild-mannered mr zo has finally been pushed to breaking point
25:25get down get down get down come out
25:28you embarrass all bullhunt students at a school i've never seen a student like yours
25:44you embarrass the bullhunt
25:46i'm not
25:53everyone has limitations
25:56it's a shame
26:00maybe this is something i'm not i cannot handle
26:06but i do my best i tried
26:16real signs of stress are beginning to show in all of the chinese teachers
26:28i feel the chinese discipline is the best in the world
26:36but this is a shame everybody know we're good at discipline we're here need help from external teachers
26:46that's poor that's terrible
26:50that's not all
26:53if our disciplines cause so much concern
26:58got to be wrong
27:00that's a red light on in my book
27:03no one can help them
27:06if they don't want to learn
27:07if they don't want to be positive
27:10to be a part of the school
27:14of course they can change now very quickly
27:18but i don't think we can
27:20achieve or we can make
27:22personally i'm not that sure now
27:25we've got to work together to turn this chinese school around
27:30we have to work
27:32as a team it's not about him it's not about her it's not about me it's about a chinese school it's about china
27:39it's about a nation
27:42that is my bottom line i will do everything in my power to make sure this chinese school is not failing
28:02nearly halfway through the experiment and the kids of the chinese school think it's just another day
28:07morning
28:13they're about to get a nasty surprise
28:22morning good morning
28:27good morning hello
28:29okay let's go
28:30good morning everybody can i have your attention this way now please
28:40so if we can close books put pens down i need your full and undivided attention now
28:46eyes this way please eyes this way please
28:56okay folks i'm here this morning because some things have cropped up that i think i need to talk to
29:02you about at this stage of the experiment when a member of staff like i am now is stood in front of you
29:10explaining giving instruction teaching you and you're not focused and you're off task and you're not
29:17listening and you're distracting other people then there will have to be consequences
29:22we wouldn't tolerate that in any normal lesson at bow hunt and it has to apply here irrespective of any cultural differences
29:31does anybody
29:33does anybody
29:34not understand what it is i'm asking of you this morning
29:41does anybody have a problem with what i'm asking of you this morning
29:46okay well thanks very much have a good day
29:55thank you the proof of the pudding will be in the eating it's very easy for them to sit there
29:59because they know me it's very easy to sit there because they know the expectations we have as a
30:03school and nod compliantly the challenge will be whether they go back into chinese lessons and take those expectations on board
30:11i love you so much i'm a best friend
30:18It will be better, I think it will be better, but...
30:25Look, just a little bit.
30:28They are also 50 people.
30:30You can have 100% of your attention.
30:33You're not standing in front of me.
30:35You're standing in front of me,
30:36everyone's eyes are looking at him.
30:38He's very good.
30:39He's very good.
30:41Luca,
30:43all of those,
30:44I've seen the last few of them,
30:46all of them are really good.
30:47It's not that much of our usual classes.
30:50So they can do good things, right?
30:53Yes.
30:56Luca, you don't give me good luck, huh?
30:59Good luck.
31:03Despite their reputation for discipline,
31:05Chinese teachers like Li Ai-Win
31:07are not used to raising their voices in class.
31:13When you talk, I will wait.
31:17I feel very surprised.
31:21Why was this morning so quiet when Mr Vaughan was here?
31:26Because we're scared of him, frankly.
31:28Yeah.
31:29There's no one likes him.
31:30Honestly, I'm not exactly scared of you.
31:32I don't think you need respect if you go on like this.
31:38Class begins.
31:39Stand up.
31:40Stand up.
31:41Stand up.
31:42Stand up.
31:43Stand up.
31:44Stand up.
31:45Stand up.
31:46Stand up.
31:47Stand up.
31:48Keeping control is even more difficult when the subject you're teaching is English grammar.
31:53Sit down, please.
31:55Stand up.
31:56But despite their problems managing the class, the Chinese teachers are doggedly sticking
32:00to their guns.
32:01The formation of the passive voice of the verb is verb B and PP.
32:10Who can tell me what PP means?
32:12What do you mean by PP?
32:13You said PP.
32:14You said PP.
32:15Look at here.
32:16Object.
32:17Grammar is very important in learning a language.
32:22It is especially important to the foreigners, but it is still important to the native speakers.
32:29What is present continuous?
32:32What you are doing now at the moment?
32:36For example, Miss Li is talking about grammar.
32:40We are listening to her.
32:43So far, they don't have a lot of knowledge on grammar, which made me surprised.
32:50In China, we learn more grammar than British people.
32:55And our students do better in the international tests in grammar.
33:01So, at the moment, we are all absolutely fantastic analyzing language.
33:06You are very good at starting to evaluate it, but what I am not getting is a clear point
33:11of view within your answers.
33:12I am not really getting a voice or an opinion behind your answers.
33:16In Britain, drilling the rules of grammar was phased out of most secondary schools in
33:21the 1960s to make way for a more creative approach.
33:26I want you now to come up with a list of what you think writing to argue does involve.
33:31Jot that down in your books, and in three minutes, I am going to give you, we will take some feedback.
33:36I give the students more responsibility for their own learning.
33:39So, I like to have a little bit of my own input at the start of the lesson, but then I like to set tasks up
33:45and let the students go with it.
33:47So, there's quite a lot of inquiry-based learning in my lessons.
33:50It's giving the students the tools to learn with, but then making them do a bit of learning on their own
33:56before I sort of give them the answers.
33:59So, yeah, I think a bit more active.
34:02When we learn verbs, tenses and voices are very important.
34:07Why do we need to learn this? Like, seriously, we can only speak English.
34:12Grammar is something British students will have to get used to.
34:15It will be making a comeback in 2016, forming a greater part of English GCSE.
34:21We talked about the verb tenses, right? Okay. Let's just go over them one by one.
34:28I hate grammar so much.
34:33I just don't care about predicates and verbs, and I can't even remember some of them.
34:39What else do we have learned? I learned this before.
34:42Present perfect. But what about the irregular ones? You need to learn them by heart.
34:47For example, see, saw, seen. Swim, swam, swam.
34:53Who says swam? Some people didn't know swam was a word.
34:57Swam? Yeah, he swam. Swam. Swam isn't a word. Swam is a word. Swam is not a word.
35:02Swam is a word. I'm going to check my dictionary. Swam isn't a word.
35:05Swam isn't a word. Huh? Swam isn't a word. S-W-U-M.
35:09Swam isn't a word. Can we have a minute break? Just really quick.
35:12Are you going to check your dictionary on your phone? Yes.
35:16Swam isn't a word. It's swam. This is a verb. Swam.
35:22Oh, it's a word. It's a word? I told you it's a word.
35:25Swam isn't a word.
35:33I think that's a very important thing.
35:38Some are more than just like China.
35:42China has a term for the world.
35:45It's not like this concept.
35:47It's not a good idea.
35:49It's a very powerful tool.
35:51It's a national security system.
35:53If I am going to put these things in England,
35:57I'll put it into a little bit.
35:59You're more than Chinese.
36:01Zhao Wei has taught in British schools before,
36:07and she has some very pointed views
36:09about why she thinks the Chinese system is better.
36:13The reason why the British students fall behind is their attitude.
36:19They don't realise that study is not only a right,
36:24it's also a responsibility.
36:27The country offers you this opportunity,
36:29and you need to value it.
36:31You can't just say, because I can't be school free,
36:33I don't need to pay for it, that's why I don't need to value it.
36:37In fact, you do pay for it.
36:39It's from the tax your parents pay, from other parents pay.
36:43It's not from... The money is not from the sky, right?
36:51But even Chinese education isn't all about chalk and talk.
36:55After two weeks in the classroom teaching Mandarin,
36:58Miss Wei wants to give the kids a taste of Chinese culture.
37:02When you talk about culture for a country,
37:05you always talk about food.
37:07Like, when we talk about UK, fish and chips, obviously.
37:11So when you talk about China,
37:13I think dumplings will be a very important food you need to mention.
37:18I remember when I was just a little girl,
37:22I would just stand beside, you know, my parents,
37:25where they will make dumplings.
37:27It's really nice, you know, family time, get together,
37:30enjoy the food together.
37:32Because my mom makes the best dumplings, you know,
37:35much, much better than me.
37:36Mom's food is always the best.
37:38Yeah, mom's food, yes, it's always the best, you know.
37:40It's not only the taste of dumplings,
37:42it's the moment you spend with your family.
37:45And we are a big group, you know, like a family.
37:49Hurry up, stay here. Hurry up, hurry up.
37:52Move in, move in, please, move in.
37:54Move in, hurry up, move in, hurry up.
37:56You're not having a mug of tea.
38:00Now sit yourself down, please.
38:02We choose dumplings because it's a family work, you know.
38:07We do want them to experience that, you know,
38:09that family life in China because the students in group,
38:13so they work as family, you know.
38:15Some make the skins, some do these things,
38:17and, you know, while they're doing it,
38:19they can talk with each other, you know, laughing,
38:22and say, oh, look at your dumplings, it's ugly,
38:25look at mine, mine's brilliant, you know.
38:27That is the same way as what we do in China.
38:31I feel like a Chinese Paul Hollywood.
38:37This is the best, definitely.
38:40This is a better one, which I didn't make.
38:44It's funny, it's funny, it looks like a fetus in a world.
38:50Yeah, that's good. Well done.
38:53By doing this, they're not only learning the Chinese culture
38:56and make a bit of dumplings for themselves,
38:58and I hope they will, you know, encourage them,
39:00and build a better, positive relationship
39:03in delivering our academic subjects as well.
39:09Come and try your dumplings.
39:13Ah, no, no, no, no, no!
39:19That's good.
39:21Cheers!
39:22Everything in the Chinese school is aimed at instilling a sense of collective responsibility.
39:44At the end of each day, pupils have to clean their own classroom.
39:49It's so dirty inside.
39:51Anyone who can help, we need help.
39:57In China, we teach our students about their duties.
40:03It's the student's duty to clean up the classroom.
40:07For majority of the students, they will think it's an honour to help the teachers.
40:13But here, teenagers, do they realise their duty?
40:17Do they have any idea about their duty?
40:18Stop!
40:19Stop!
40:20Stop!
40:21I'm so curious.
40:22I'm absolutely so curious.
40:23When you go to society, they will tell you all kinds of duties you need to do.
40:29You need to pay your tax, you need to do this, you need to do that.
40:33So if before you didn't prepare the children about these things,
40:36how can they cope this difference?
40:37Mr Zhou still needs to deal with the scandal of Josh and his kettle.
40:50He's decided to use the ultimate sanction to call in Josh's mum.
40:55So is this the block? This is where you're...
40:58In China, a teacher calling a parent into school would bring great shame to the family.
41:04So, you know this, right?
41:08I do know that it exists.
41:09Do you know the story?
41:12Josh told you?
41:13Yes, the tea person.
41:15Tea person, but also, he said, I think it's a human right,
41:19because 12 hours without a hot drink.
41:22And I said, well, if you take the kettle in, I explained it might be a health and safety issue.
41:26So there you go, that's the nature of the beast.
41:29So the kettle is coming home.
41:32But thank you for your teaching anyway.
41:34No, no problem.
41:35So.
41:36OK.
41:37Yep.
41:38All right.
41:39Take care.
41:40Enjoy the next two weeks.
41:41OK.
41:42Thank you very much.
41:43Take care.
41:44Nice to meet you.
41:49It's an experiment, but I'm kind of glad it's finishing in two weeks' time.
41:53I felt like he would be entering a kind of draconian environment, and we had a damn good laugh about it prior.
42:02I said, oh, you'll be, you know, nose to the grind here, and there's me thinking, well, do him some good, you know.
42:07You know, put a bit more pressure on.
42:09And what I've seen is him kick like a mule at a system that he feels unsure about.
42:15And I think what he's saying is, I'm an individual, I'm sitting in the back of your class, and maybe this is his way of sticking his hand up and waving, because he doesn't feel he can ask.
42:26And although this is supposed to be Chinese methods, there's still Chinese methods in a British classroom, and you can't escape that fact.
42:34And I think the children are loudly and clearly saying, we're British, and we're doing it our way.
42:49This is becoming a familiar walk for Bowhunt headteacher Neil Stroger.
42:53Off to check up on the pupils of the Chinese school.
42:57I am quite upset, and professionally I am very nervous at what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing is going on in some classrooms,
43:07because it's just absolutely not what would be tolerated from a normal Bowhunt teacher.
43:16Right, here it goes, now there we go, there's a fire regulation problem.
43:20Mr. Stroger has wheeled in head of school Mr. Vaughan to pay a surprise visit to the science lab.
43:27Oh my days. Oh my god, I don't even have a pen.
43:30Daniel. Daniel. Daniel.
43:32Daniel. Do you have a spare pen?
43:34Do you have a spare pen?
43:37Now, let's look at today's lesson. Thank you. Can you take the title down please?
43:43Full chin and full wear.
43:44When Mr. Stroger comes in the room, you know you have to behave.
43:49He just like, walks around the classroom like, and you know you have to be quiet,
43:56because he's got the face on.
43:59Some animals eat plants, some animals eat each other.
44:03Do you know what you're doing?
44:04Always...
44:05Do you know what you're doing?
44:06...with green plants.
44:08Why aren't you doing it then?
44:10It's a bit like having a prime minister in your classroom.
44:14It shows the pupils who are being a bit disruptive.
44:17This is very serious. This is a month of learning that should be happening.
44:25It's starting to dawn on the bow hunt bosses why things are going so wrong in the Chinese school.
44:32I wouldn't say that we were pleased with what we saw,
44:36but that's possibly got more to do with the teaching and learning,
44:40rather than any other disruptive behavioural concerns.
44:44Can we write that down please?
44:45Just copy the food chain.
44:49I'm feeling quite irritated actually that the students are being subjected to such a tedious diet.
44:56You've got a teacher stood at the front, basically talking to a PowerPoint.
45:02I was only in the room for 20 minutes and I was ready to bang my head on the desk,
45:08so I have the deepest, deepest sympathy for some of those students.
45:11If you want to make notes of where I'm talking to you, now it says here...
45:16Oh, they're gone. They're gone.
45:18Oh, my days.
45:20Do you know what I reminded me of?
45:22Go on.
45:24The Thursday afternoon class of my childhood.
45:25Dying a thousand deaths in the heat, barely able to get your head off the desk with somebody droning at you incessantly.
45:35Yeah.
45:36I have a strong feeling that at the moment the Chinese school is going to fail, and fail by a margin.
45:47And I actually, genuinely now, hope it does.
45:50Because if that is the way we are going to have to teach, if that is the most successful way of teaching, then God help us.
45:58I want a beard. Like, a nice one, though.
46:03With the headteachers safely out of sight, normal service resumes in the classroom.
46:08Oh, we live together, everyone.
46:13Excuse me.
46:15Shh.
46:16We will see you.
46:17We're all in this together.
46:20Phoebe, listen to me.
46:23Listen to me, to teacher.
46:29We cannot be nice.
46:31We haven't got time to be nice anymore.
46:33We've got to take action, and we have to be tough to be able to get this Chinese school back to track.
46:43Miss Yang is keeping some of the troublemakers behind, but it's having precious little effect.
46:49Miss, why are we here?
46:50You, you're not concentrating at all.
46:53You just muck about.
46:54And you are singing.
46:55You were singing.
46:56Have you been singing?
46:57Yes, I was.
46:58That's it.
46:59End of story.
47:00Yeah, but...
47:01Okay?
47:02That's bad enough.
47:06Now, I'm going to set your time.
47:07You're going to be quiet.
47:08And set your time.
47:10Oh, sorry.
47:11Didn't mean to do that.
47:13Phoebe, for that one, you go one more minute.
47:18I'm going to face the wall.
47:19Don't take it.
47:21Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
47:23Now, you stand still, please.
47:25No talking.
47:26Oh, my God.
47:27Stand still.
47:28Kill me now.
47:29The time starts.
47:31Now.
47:33When the students are not listening, misbehaving, and talk to each other, it's frustration.
47:41And in my head, I saw them asking myself, am I going to manage it or not?
47:47Am I going to give up or not?
47:49It's just in that edge.
47:51It just pushed me to that edge.
47:55Hey, guys.
47:56Coming back for self-study, please.
48:00Discipline has almost completely broken down.
48:04The self-study class is half empty.
48:06Hey.
48:07Where are other people, please?
48:10Miss, they're all late.
48:11Skiving.
48:12Skiving?
48:13It means they're bunking their lesson.
48:15They're not coming in because they don't see the point.
48:18The absent kids are now roaming across the school grounds.
48:19It's a science teacher.
48:20She keeps picking on me.
48:21I wasn't doing anything that no-one else was doing.
48:22And then she keeps going, Phoebe.
48:23And then sometimes I was actually working.
48:24I did all the work.
48:25And then it's just annoying.
48:26It's also because the Chinese teachers aren't that fair.
48:27They'll pick out people that they don't like and they'll constantly tell them off.
48:30But I don't think it's very fair.
48:31I think others feel it, too.
48:32Like, Alex.
48:33What do you think?
48:34Alex.
48:35Alex.
48:36What do you think?
48:37Alex.
48:38What do you think?
48:39Alex.
48:40Alex.
48:41Alex.
48:42Alex.
48:43Alex.
48:44Alex.
48:45Alex.
48:46Alex.
48:47Alex.
48:48Alex.
48:49Alex.
48:50Alex.
48:51Alex.
48:52Alex.
48:53Alex.
48:54Alex.
48:55Alex.
48:56Alex.
48:57Alex.
48:58Alex.
48:59Alex.
49:00Alex.
49:01Alex.
49:02Alex.
49:03Alex.
49:04Alex.
49:05Alex.
49:06Alex.
49:07Alex.
49:08Alex.
49:09Alex.
49:10Alex.
49:11Alex.
49:12Alex.
49:13Alex.
49:14Alex.
49:15Alex.
49:16Alex.
49:17Alex.

49:22way of teaching i got to deliver i got to do i got to present the chinese teaching the best i can
49:37my dad always told me when he was still very healthy
49:47he said to me what i have left to my three daughters
49:52are knowledge qualifications good ability to survive in in a tough society
50:12and i cannot forget i can never forget about that
50:15i want to pass this to my students
50:25because i think my dad is the best teacher in my life
50:28and i want to teach my students what i have been taught
50:47it's over halfway through the four-week experiment and tonight is parents evening ladies and gentlemen
50:54can we mop a little bit we only have 10 minutes please be quick
51:00with the chinese school facing failure this could be the last chance to turn things around
51:13the hope is that the parents can make their kids behave
51:17parents in britain they may be not as determined as the chinese in
51:26getting their kids to do very well at school but they may cooperate with us
51:38in a typical chinese parents evening the parents sit in rows
51:42and the teachers address them from the front of the class
51:47their speeches could be their only hope of saving their school
51:53hello good evening i'm very glad to see you here
51:58you know the children just of this age they are not that serious but i think
52:04and uh uh yes we have problems too you know when they sit in a big classroom with 50 students
52:14it's very easy for them to get chatty or something and what is very important is that we have a final
52:21test next week so we hope that you can help to push our students a little bit so that they can do
52:29well in the examination in the final test so i really need your support let's push them to be quiet and
52:36concentrated so that they can focus on the study thank you very much and i really hope to get your
52:44support here okay thank you very much
53:02i find the difference between the students here and in china
53:06in china sometimes i don't need to push my students because
53:09the reality of the society will push them but here you got a very good social insurance system
53:17you know even you don't have a job the government will give you money
53:20but in china sorry no money no job no money no food and one day your children will maybe face
53:31the competition with the chinese students okay i don't mean your children you know your children are not
53:38lazy they are also intelligent in fact they are very clever and lovely students but just the big
53:46environment let them feel too comfort they don't feel any dangerous one day when when they need to face
53:55the challenge from the outside what should they do what can they do it's a challenge we will face
54:03our children will face sooner or later okay thank you
54:18good evening everybody i got a bit cold i'm sorry um my name is um miss young i'm nobody i'm just a little
54:30chinese woman from a little village i'm no one and now i'm so privileged to stand in front of this many
54:40parents who have the faith in the chinese education and send your students to our class
54:48currently i'm not very sure about which direction this chinese school is going
54:57are we going to be succeeding or not um because of the discipline the discipline going down the drain
55:06and i want them to make the most of it and our philosophy is that struggle is not
55:14a son of weakness struggling is a son of strength that means you don't give up you keep trying you try
55:22you try you try until you get it and i promise you that i do all my best to help your child children
55:30just fully stand behind them to help them thank you very much
55:41you know i was questioning should i have let josh get involved this at the end of last week

55:59enjoy my experience here it was great to hear those teachers and it was good to hear their experiences so
56:09so i for one had a lot of confidence in these people i understood what was important to them
56:15what they were trying to achieve and i started to get a glimpse about the hard work and dedication
56:21that they've put into this experiment thank you thank you thank you bye-bye i thought that was really
56:26moving actually that latest speech i think it's such an amazing experience with the kids
56:32we cannot give up we have the trust we have the support and it gives us more confidence in doing
56:40our job better should we go for a glass of wine and discuss how we're going to reprimand them
56:46it is a great relief to know that the british parents are behind the chinese teaching and learning
56:53this is my lifetime dream come true i want my country to be successful i want
