00:00There's big news for the Liverpool art scene. A major cash boost is breathing new life into one of the city's most iconic cultural landmarks.
00:08Tate Liverpool is getting a multi-million pound makeover thanks to a £12 million investment from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
00:18That's alongside donations from private trusts including the Garfield Western Foundation and the Ross Warburton Charitable Trust.
00:25The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority also awarded funding for the developmental phase of the project via its Strategic Investment Fund.
00:33The gallery which first opened in 1988 is being reimagined for the 21st century.
00:39Plans include a striking new public art hall, a greener energy efficient design and expanded exhibition spaces to showcase world class contemporary art.
00:48Director Helen Legg called it a once in a generation renewal, a cultural investment that will boost Liverpool's economy and bring global art closer to the local communities.
00:58The gallery was temporarily closed from October 2023 and was originally set to reopen this year.
01:05The gallery is now set to reopen in 2027 with a major retrospective of artist Sheila Kumari Singh Berman leading the relaunch programme celebrating northern creativity and culture.
01:16Designed by 6A Architects, the renovation will open up spaces to display the incredible variety of Tate's collections and host world class exhibitions.
01:25These galleries will sit alongside new public spaces for play, relaxation and learning with views right across the Mersey helping to connect the gallery with the city and communities that surround it.
01:35Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy says the transformation will help secure Liverpool's place as a global cultural hub for generations to come.
