I visit city's newest market at Stanley Park

Located in the heart of one of Liverpool's most famous parks, the city's newest market in Stanley Park sells a wide range of products.

00:06Located in the heart of one of the city's most famous and beautiful parks,

00:11the city's newest market in Stanley Park sells a wide range of products.

00:15We're going to go around today and take a look.

00:18I love markets. I love the market vibe. I love to be in outdoors.

00:22I love the sense of community.

00:24I love the fact that traders, in theory, are all in competition with each other.

00:29But we absolutely support each other.

00:31Have a little look around. These people are all out, having a nice day out,

00:36walking around, getting a couple of bargains and having a little laugh with the traders and you too.

00:42Operating on Wednesdays between late March and December,

00:46the weekly market hosts up to 100 stalls.

00:49Visitors can expect a local feel with a big welcome for all.

00:53They almost appear in the morning, disappear at the end of the day.

00:57But I think it's just that the sense of community, it brings people together.

01:02And they're very old. It's a very old way of dealing with things.

01:05There's nothing fancy.

01:09Everyone's sort of make-do and end and putting things together.

01:12People are just trying to get by.

01:14If you're wondering exactly where it is, the market's located at the top end of the large Stanley Park car park,

01:20next to the Anfield Roadstand of Anfield Stadium, the home, of course, of Liverpool Football Club.

01:26Due to its proximity to the home of the Reds and the Blues,

01:29it's important to mention the market does not operate when Liverpool Football Club or Everton Football Club has a match scheduled that night.

01:36What's not to enjoy? We're outside. It's sunny. It's a glorious day.

01:41We've got loads of people walking around. We've got the two football grounds here.

01:45This should be on the tourist information boards, absolutely.

01:49This may be the city's nearest market, but a lot of the stallholders here have been working at markets around the city for decades.

01:57So my granddad started it about 60 years ago, and then my dad recently retired, so then I'm doing it now.

02:05Always selling rugs as well, so yeah, it's been a long time.

02:09If this turns out to be like Race Home Street, it'll be well good, because Race Home Street is not only a marvellous,

02:17it's a place where people come, and it's a social environment.

02:21I think a market like this is important because they're all small businesses, you know, supporting local people.

02:28I think the majority of the traders are all, you know, from Liverpool or surrounding areas, so I think that's super important.

02:35Liverpool's early development as a major port city in the 18th and 19th centuries was closely linked to its market culture.

02:41Markets were the central hub where goods arriving at the docks were sold and distributed,

02:45and as a multicultural city, markets serve as a cultural bridges between communities.

02:51And it's great, it's great, and it's a great leveller as well.

02:55You know, don't come with your ears and graces, because no one's interested, you're on a market, mate.
