00:00a recap of the end of the eastern conference final and what awaits in the nba finals bright
00:05and early to start off a new week on this monday morning with our coach jy james young
00:10who is here to join us for the next three segments we'll talk about game number six
00:15in indianapolis how the pacers got it done and also what it means for jy's knicks as they look
00:22forward to now a long summer and off season and if they can get back to the mountaintop in the nba
00:28finals once again was it a successful season jy will tell us in summation in just a matter of
00:36moments but before all that jy we first say thank you for being here to start off a new week
00:40it's great to be with you i'm prepared for donnie to rip on my new york knicks but it's always a
00:46pleasure at least glad to see you as always i mean drs will rip on them rightfully so maybe if we
00:53consider it you'll give us the context that is necessary as well jy there is no doubt about that
00:58but before we go big picture on where indiana is entering the nba finals and where new york will be
01:05the remainder of this summer we talk about how game six played out competitive in the opening half jy
01:11but the pace was pulled away in that third quarter to take a 14 15 point lead into the fourth and final
01:18quarter and we did see a single digit margin with just over 10 minutes remaining but in those final
01:2412 minutes the game never really in balance the pacers win big to win the eastern conference finals
01:30for the first time in two and a half decades 125 108 what was the key to the pacers closing out the
01:38knicks in game six on saturday night honestly it was the it was the play of how they did it in regards
01:45to their offense but you saw it right off the bat first position of the game they were pick and roll
01:50to get uh brunson involved in pick and roll action i think naysmith got a layup or a dunk early on
01:56but then they went at cat high ball screen a lot of confusion kind of odd for a team coach by tips
02:03have such confusion on ball screen coverage that continued to go drop in that scenario uh that
02:10indiana took advantage particularly in the third quarter going seven out of 13 from three point land
02:15the knicks lost the game for a couple of reasons number one the three point shot right obviously
02:20indiana shot the ball extremely well from three throughout the entire game uh number two i've never
02:26and i mean never seen a team get beat not once not twice not three i believe four times in transition
02:34off of a made shot so that's how quick they got the ball down the floor and then obviously just
02:41exposing the knicks what they are which is a top heavy team at which their zero their minus defenders
02:46are their two best players they went at them all game and at the end of the day indiana where rick
02:52carlisle had enough counter punches to tips to go ahead and win the eastern conference title
02:57coach i want to talk about pascal siakam here going to indianapolis take a look at last year around that
03:01trade deadline that move gets made and it worked out in spades particularly even in this you know
03:06eastern conference finals three games over 30 plus points the man was a machine you take a look at
03:11their close to 25 points five rebounds and three and a half assists here that's one of those moves
03:15that really worked out in the pacers favor it looks like he's only getting better in that uniform
03:19here coach yeah i think honestly donnie the biggest takeaway from from pascal siakam in the series
03:25is the fact that he had three games in which he shot the ball and hit three threes and shot i think
03:30over the series over 50 percent no one had that in their bingo card but at times you step on that
03:36pascal siakam is funny there was a lot of talk before the series is whether pascal siakam is a
03:42superstar well obviously he delivered because i think he had the biggest performance was the 39 point
03:48performance in game number two which got indiana at that 2-0 series lead he was absolutely dynamic
03:55here's a guy that can beat you in any different ways usually we think of pascal siakam
03:58as more of a point forward in regards to like generating offense for his teammates but his
04:04scoring ability his ability to take bigger guys to the perimeter smaller guys inside off the bounce
04:09what a performance by pascal siakam and what though he was walking towards the podium he shouldn't have
04:15been they were right pascal siakam was the mbp of the eastern conference finals oh so that was going to
04:22be my question we'll talk about it in just a second but pascal siakam 15 plus in all six games in the
04:28eastern conference finals the only guy to score in double digits for indiana in every single game
04:35of that set against the new york knicks the guy that was the hefty favorite however jy to win eastern
04:41conference finals mvp tyrese halliburton you saw the price on pascal to win ecf mvp entering game six
04:5020 to one tyrese halliburton was a hefty minus money favorite and delivered in game six 21 points
04:5813 dimes six rebounds a historic performance in game four 32 points 15 assists 12 rebounds without
05:07committing a single turnover but a couple of disappointing games in the two losses that indiana
05:12suffered throughout the eastern conference finals so jy you're okay then with pascal siakam
05:19not tyrese halliburton winning eastern conference finals mvp yeah because i think the fact of you know
05:25two games of of of uh obviously of um you know halliburton going under 15 points including the first two games
05:32of the series where you go down 2-0 or go up 2-0 with pascal siakam with a 39 point performance
05:38let's put it this way he had he had the best game of the series pascal siakam had the more consistent
05:45series in my opinion and it sets up an interesting dynamic with i'm not mistaken i in this playoffs i
05:53don't know of his career tyrese halliburton when he gets a 10 plus assist they don't lose so he was
05:58obviously fantastic and every win they had uh obviously you know people were talking about oh
06:03the shot in game one remember folks in game one he was only you know he didn't shoot the ball
06:08particularly well early on the game got going late but to me you know it was more about the play of
06:13siakam over the totality of the series more than like the two or three big spots of tyrese halliburton
06:21yeah we'll get into the knicks how they fared in the season coach and also what we think about
06:25the future but you as a knicks fan looking at this playoff run did it leave you wanting more
06:30because i i don't mean to answer that question because of course you wanted to win a championship
06:33and make the finals here but was that a satisfying outcome for a playoff run as a new york knicks fan
06:38well if you look at the how they lost in their defensive problems no but if you really pull the
06:45curtain back and i want knicks fans to think about this you know it's been 52 years but folks we haven't
06:52been the knicks haven't been this close since the mid 90s this is the first time since the mid late
06:5890s that the knicks have had a playoff run of at least two years where they've gotten past you know
07:03the to the second round to the point where you thought hey maybe this can be something but now
07:09becomes the hard part right get how do you get over the hump there's people that want to panic as
07:15knicks fans and say you get rid of tips get through this guy right guy and there's other people want to
07:19come that want to bring it back to me it's a little bit more in the middle what you do in new york
07:24but you also look at the fact donnie that if new york would start swinging for trades particularly
07:29because of the michael bridges trade they don't have a lot of draft capital to put into trades to
07:34bring back another superstar yeah they did make history right for the new york knicks they reached
07:39the eastern conference finals for the first time in two and a half decades i think blanket statement
07:44you say that to a knicks fan before the start of this year they give you a round of applause and
07:49say heck yeah nixon seven but jy in the manner that new york did that slaying the boston celtics
07:56and doing so in comeback fashion in those first four games even before jason tatum suffered that
08:03gruesome injury the knicks really got past that playoff uh dragon for them that really stood in their
08:11way so for the new york knicks to be the celtics and then an outright favorite to win the eastern
08:16conference finals that's where the disappointment is is that where your disappointment stands and how
08:22does new york take that next step next season well i think the disappointment is the fact that the
08:27goalposts got moved right because when you went into the celtics series a lot of nicks fans said they
08:31weren't going to be this i'll say this this is more unprecedented than a 99 run when they were
08:36an eight seed people thought the knicks were going to be good if to go to a finals in 99 just so i had
08:40a poor shortened regular season it was this run that was a little more unprecedented because of the
08:44fact that boston oklahoma city cleveland beat them up all year so what do they have to do tie up the
08:50defense they have to get a stronger bent and uh but there's a lot of things that new york can do
08:55tinkering i don't know if you have to go swing and try to hit a home run because you may strike out
09:00jy jy five word answer or less is tom thibodeau back as the knicks head coach next season
09:06because he's got brunton in his quarter and leon rose worldwide west absolutely okay absolutely would
09:13be the one word answer a little bit more than five a little more than that but we'll give you the
09:16benefit of the doubt still before we got the break more jy next the indiana pacers will play for the
09:23larry o'brien trophy for the first time since the year 2000 that is two and a half decades our coach
09:29jy james young is back with us here on this monday morning on the early line on sports grid jy this
09:36was a pacers team that beat the knicks in seven games a postseason ago in that seventh game inside
09:43madison square garden and reached the eastern conference finals two straight appearances for
09:49indiana in the eastern conference finals now a new and even more significant stage in the nba
09:55finals but we did not expect indiana to be back in this moment entering this season 21 to 1 to win
10:02the eastern conference crown before the year got started seventh best price around the eastern
10:07conference 28 to 1 before the playoffs got going which was the fourth best number but of course even
10:15longer are you surprised jy about where the pacers have been and where they are going now playing in the
10:23nba finals yeah you have to be surprised man with the fact of how they look you know the beginning of
10:28the season i mean beginning of season they look god awful but if you take the second half of the year
10:33particularly the play of terry's halliburton they played phenomenally they may play much better and
10:38then when you get down to the playoffs is this you know when we got to the playoffs we just everybody
10:43automatically thought boston cleveland boston cleveland and there's this whole adage of well indiana
10:49well they get lucky they beat everybody they beat the next game seven where they you know they were
10:53hurt they beat this team where hurt they beat uh you know uh milwaukee first round after dame got hurt
11:00they you know uh obviously cleveland wasn't healthy enough well we're gonna put all that nonsense to bed
11:06because the new york knicks i don't care about cat limping around with his knee they were healthy
11:11they were the better team and i think what you saw is a team that evolved honestly been better
11:17defensively than we thought that was ever possible out of this team and a team that collectively could
11:23share the ball and you got to give credit to rick carl and i've been saying this for weeks
11:28like can we put rick carl we never talk about this guy being a top five coach in the nba
11:32well i well can we put that to bed now for what he's did with indiana and back-to-back years making it
11:39to the eastern cop finals and now nba finals this is a well coached team this is a deep team
11:44now listen did i have thomas bryant hitting three quarter threes in my bingo card on saturday night
11:49absolutely not but bet at the end of the day when you're a coach that believes in your players
11:54and you give your players opportunity to get better and prove and coach them up you get situations like
12:00you did with thomas bryant where you get naysmith being an absolute pest even though he hadn't been the
12:06primary uh defender on brunson you get a naysmith getting red hot in the game one of the series
12:11because you believe in your players ben that is the biggest takeaway i've taken out of this
12:17rick carl out group his coach believes in his players they believe in him they believe in his
12:21system how come the people though coach weren't believing in the indiana pacers again as you
12:26stated last year making the eastern conference finals coming into this you're not playing great
12:29basketball but even at the beginning of the playoffs like hey i think if the bucks get it together and
12:33dame is healthy they could be a fun team or we were always talking about myself the cavaliers and also
12:37boston you never heard the pacers creeping the conversation nick's got much more talk
12:41than the pacers entering into the postseason as if they were the team that could knock them off
12:45next talk about that when you have a basketball team that understands that you're not getting the
12:49respect and you're taking the respect game by game and series by series now well i think that's a huge
12:55thing is you go get you go take respect from people now at the end of the day you know i thought that
13:01they were going to beat milwaukee because i thought milwaukee was widely overrated and that was before the
13:05game injury but particularly what they did to cleveland uh what was was shocking and how they
13:11did it and here's the thing this is a young team that hadn't been to a finals they did a lot of their
13:15damage on the road that that's the big takeaway is they were not scared of an environment of going on the
13:22road as a big underdog and taking teams out night in night out that is something that is shocking the
13:30most shocking part about it is it's because the team that we talked about offensively it was their
13:34defense like i said that became really really important and set up obviously game number one
13:40where they're a heavy underdog i mean part of me is like oklahoma city could roll them but then
13:44the apartment was like they keep doing it like they keep doing it can indiana compete and maybe steal a game
13:51one six and two for the pacers on the road throughout this playoff run that has reached the nba
13:57finals for the first time in 25 years seven and three outright as an underdog in this playoff run
14:04as well for the pacers to find the odds makers throughout the entirety of it so jy let's start
14:11to take that early look at oklahoma city and indiana now the thunder have been the odds on favorite to win
14:18an nba championship for about the last three weeks oklahoma city as the one seed in the best team in the
14:25nba throughout the regular season in the western conference has been a hefty minus money favorite
14:31to win that nba championship after the chaos ensued in the eastern conference okc is a minus 750
14:39outright favorite to knock off the indiana pacers in the nba finals and win that larry o'brien
14:46trophy there is no doubt uh jy that the thunder should be a hefty minus money favorite they have home
14:53floor advantage in the nba finals but should the line be this strong in favor of okc
14:59it shouldn't and that's the only thing i think about is that it's minus 750 such a wild number
15:06could i see it being four to one max five to one yes but seven and a half to one basically says they
15:12don't think the pacers have a shot and you know what and i wonder ben crazy it sounds if the pacers
15:19would have beat the celtics right in the eastern conference finals and ran through those two top
15:24teams wouldn't be better odds for the pacers it would be they would be closer to you know not even
15:31money but maybe at that five to one four to one price because of the fact of who it's a matter of
15:36how oklahoma city has done it it's a matter of how the five game beatdown of minnesota i know they got
15:43challenged by denver but a lot of that to do with how oklahoma city did and how indiana got to this
15:49spot and that will be the conversation for us jy certainly as we dive even deeper on the other side
15:56of the break but you saw it right there okc laying two and a half games the most likely option is the
16:02thunder winning this in a gentleman's sweep will we see more than five games in the nba finals
16:07it's hard to go against the pacers but i'm going to go against them and say yes it's going to go
16:13five games or less uh i wouldn't be shocked if the game they steal could be thursday night
16:18okay so we'll talk about the key matchups then that could lead to the thunder winning an nba
16:24championship for the first time in oklahoma city and why okc is even such a hefty favorite for the
16:31nba finals in the first place we'll do that with jy on the other side of the break live right here
16:37on the early line live right here on this monday morning on the early line on sports grid plenty
16:42of off days to decide how the nba championship will play out in the nba finals that begins on thursday
16:50between the thunder and the pacers jy right before the break i ask you will the nba final see more
16:57than five games the odds makers are not expecting it oklahoma city is laying two and a half games in
17:03the series spread the most likely outcome is the thunder in five at plus 210 even over five and a
17:11half total games in this series has plus money at plus 106 you said that more than likely you see the
17:19nba championship decided in five games or fewer what matchup advantage does oklahoma city have
17:26against indiana to be such a strong favorite and maybe wrap up in a larry o'brien trophy rather quickly
17:33honestly it's the fact that indiana has not seen a defense like this the entire postseason
17:39this defense of oklahoma city is top notch and they have the off the defensive flexibility to go
17:46ahead and give indiana problems when you look at the fact of how tyrese halliburton is going to be
17:52able was able to get loose versus new york well look at the fact that the mccall bridges is not as good
17:58of defender as lou dort uh you know no one is as good of a defender and in regards to caruso so to
18:04me i think that and then when you look at the front line of hartenstein and hongren as rim protectors
18:09i think that gives them a decided advantage and and what we think uh they could do defensively i think
18:17the other thing that people have to look into a fact of is is when you go to the other side of the
18:22ball even having a guy like a naismith or a ben shepherd or you know obviously a number guarding
18:29someone like an sga this is a completely different animal than jalen brunson you know you look at sga
18:35being six six versus six one longer wingspan not being able to be bumped off the ball as much as much
18:42all the advantages that indiana had with new york in regard to size and how they could defend
18:47they get thrown out the window versus okc because i think okc does everything indiana does
18:53better and is better defensively take a look at the marketplace here for mvp in the finals obviously
19:01sga is the lead dog here to minus 550 price if you think okc wins he's probably going to get that
19:06it's a lower price than just picking okc overall followed by halliburton and siakam here for the
19:11indiana pacers and then you go down the list the reason i bring up lou dort 500 to one could we have
19:17a series like we saw from andre godala where all he did was foul lebron james the entire length of
19:21the series and be left wide open for three point shots where nobody covered him because he's a
19:26terrible shooter could we get that type of performance from lou dort taking an mvp coach how
19:30about that i don't know if he's trying to get his buddy kevin waltz fired up for money a little bit
19:37i don't know i don't know i don't know but listen i don't know about lou dort winning mvp odds
19:47but lou dort to lead the series in threes at five to one now that is intriguing to me because if you
19:55think about it you get a high caliber to plus 155 they're they're going to get up on him and they're
19:59going to have tall defenders to deal with him nay smith he's going to maybe get into foul trouble
20:04because he's got to guard h sga so the next guy down the line is lou dort and if you're thinking
20:09about defensively and you're rick carlisle right you don't want sga to go off you're going to try and
20:13continue williams you know chat's a problem isaiah hartstein's in the middle so if there's a guy that
20:19you may give the shot to and a guy that's got shot volume lou dort not to win mvp because of
20:26iguodala injuries and fakeness and all that stuff whatever conspiracy theory you have i'll just go with
20:31lou dort five to one to hit the most threes in the series yeah jy it will be interesting and maybe
20:36donnie should not have slandered lou dort and that three-point range that he possesses in a comparison
20:42to andre iguodala by the way to be the series leading scorer shea gildress alexander minus 6 000
20:50it would seem likely that if the thunder win the nba championship as we anticipate sga adds to the
20:57hardware mantle of this historic and incredible season jy game number one thursday night in okc the
21:05thunder a nine point favorite of course we expect okc to have the lopsided advantages throughout this
21:12nba final set i ask you about rest the thunder will be off for seven full days entering game one
21:20the pacers off for four full days entering game one how will these two teams look from the very start thursday night
21:27i think indiana may be more dialed in in the beginning here and you get the comebacks here's where i'm going
21:34indiana patients plus a five and a half first half then jump one okc the second half they make the runs in the third and fourth quarter
21:41i am sure that at some point this week jy before game number one tips you'll be back on for many more
21:49handicaps around the nba finals and the opening game on a thursday night
21:53live right here on this monday morning on the early line on sports grid it is our pleasure as always
22:06to provide that prop perspective from the very start of a new week with the man known as tv tom
22:13vecchio of sports grid the jack of all trades joining us here to look at the nba finals matchup
22:19now set between the oklahoma city thunder and the indiana pacers how does tom approach a series with
22:25such such a hefty and lopsided favorite we'll talk stanley cup final with tv tom as well and maybe even
22:32some plays on this monday around mlb vecchio as always we appreciate your time thanks for being
22:39here to start a new week thanks for having me yeah we have a lot to get to the nhl and nba playoffs
22:45start this week obviously there's multiple different ways to attack it not really just on a first game
22:50basis obviously with a larger spread but the series prices the series props are far more interesting to
22:56me uh let's get going still a few days off vecchio until we get to game number one of the nba
23:01finals on thursday game number one of the stanley cup final on a wednesday night as well so let's
23:07start around the association vecchio we assume that if oklahoma city were to match up against indiana
23:13the thunder would be a hefty favorite to win the larry o'brien trophy crowned in nba champ and that's
23:19exactly what the odds makers are anticipating minus 750 oklahoma city also a two and a half game favorite
23:27at minus 118 to lay the two and a half games with the thunder for okc to cash that ticket
23:33it would be winning in at most five games so vecchio i asked what would the approach be from a betting
23:39perspective with such a lopsided favorite in the nba finals what's your answer you have to do it in some
23:47type of series bet so if you think you know okc gets done quickly i think 4-1 is a realistic outcome
23:53maybe 4-2 you know 4-1 is at plus 210 and 4-2 is at plus 4-10 so theoretically you could play both at
24:00an equal unit on both and as long as one of those hits you will come out net positive because at
24:05plus 210 they're both plus money you just need one of them to cash now if it is going to four to two
24:10that means it's going over five and a half games that means okc again covers a minus one and a half
24:15series spread whatever it might be so again you can go bet in multiple ways my favorite bet for the
24:19series would be over five and a half games and that would you know kind of imply okc winning four
24:25to two and then if we are in a spot where they're up three one in the series and you know they could
24:29close out obviously in that fifth game i could simply play them on the money line and then get
24:33back to you know my initial bet obviously probably be juiced over you know heavy money line but i could
24:38come out net even at a certain point so that's how i always approach playoff series have a full a full
24:44series bet and then once we get to that deciding game figure out what you need to do to at least come out
24:47net even yeah i'm with you i think it does go six games in this because i think we're shorthanding
24:52again the indiana pacers which has been that way for the regular season and into the playoffs where
24:56that's a good squad where you just need to get one on oklahoma city's floor and they'll see if they
25:00can do that but if we do let's just say have a five six or even a seven game series somebody's going
25:05to be the mvp here of this year is a heavy favorite for sga at a minus 550 price here at the
25:10fan duel sports book here tom halliburton siakam williams home green behind them is it sga is to win of
25:15course he's heavily favorite but could you see somebody else stealing this even if it was
25:19a pacers victory who could it be from their side you know honestly i would make the play on siakam
25:26this is just like if you're asking me what if i had to pick someone it would be siakam because
25:30that's absolutely significantly longer price than their series price so if we do get to a seventh
25:36game which i don't think will happen siakam is probably going to be a driving force in that and
25:41if you have been 19 to 1 now he'd probably be let's call it what six to one seven to one if we
25:46do hit that seventh game and that's just a great opportunity to have in terms of the odds
25:49differential so i don't think it'll go seven games but if you're okay i just want to root for a little
25:53bit of chaos i want some interesting stuff to happen take a little bit of a longer shot at siakam in 19 to
25:58one yeah follow up there vecchio on the minus 550 price for the nba mvp the western conference finals mvp
26:05and shea gilgis alexander his team to win a championship is minus 750 sga individually
26:12is minus 550 is that considered value at all and i ask a follow-up to the follow-up can anybody else
26:20on oklahoma city if the thunder win an nba championship in health remains stable when the
26:27nba finals mvp award not named gilgis alexander i don't think i don't think there's enough value
26:33differential and this is something we've always talked about especially for nfl season right like
26:36we've talked about mvp betting on that at the start of the playoffs and i just don't think there's
26:40enough differential if all stats are equal jalen williams and sga they both put the exact same
26:46stats team if jalen williams has these 30 point games they're still going to give to sga like
26:50that's what it comes down to and i don't know if people will be factoring in the voters will be
26:53factoring the entire playoff run which technically should it should just be the nba finals mvp
26:58but sga like the story right the storyline has been written where he wins mvp and now he's on
27:03the path to win finals mvp okc wins in five maybe six games sga comes away with it like it is a pretty
27:09chalky outcome this year how about the game number one as we take a look at a pretty chalky outcome
27:14anticipated here at the fandul sportsbook how about a nine point favorite for okc but a total we love
27:19230 and a half we're expecting points and possibly a blowout what are the expectations for you tom
27:25on thursday in game number one if there's any chance for indiana it's going to be catching them
27:30in game one as we saw denver do like they got to come out they got to punch them in the mouth
27:34and they so i'm interested in just taking the nine points with indiana i think they would be live on
27:38the money line and it's kind of one same situations like listen nine's a lot for oak for okc yeah
27:43they've been blowing out teams by 15 20 points consistently in the playoffs the regular season
27:47whatever it is i honestly think you can play both sides play indiana now at nine and if they do get
27:52off to hot star awesome grab okc live at minus two minus three and then you have the best of both
27:56worlds i think we see some points in that first game but man if there's any chance for indiana
28:00they got to win game one and then honestly you could play the series again different series props
28:04and okc still comes out to victory
28:06okc still comes out to victory
