Transcript
00:00So we're here in Albrighton and we've just had some rain which means it's an
00:04excellent time for planting. Rachel who do you represent here I can see is that a
00:10Scouts logo I've got? First Albrighton Scouts. Yeah and who've we got with you?
00:15Elsie. And there's a whole gang of you isn't there is this all Scouts and parents is it or is it a bit of
00:23villagers chucked in us? Parents and other helpers. We've got the wider community
00:28involved if they're not here planting they've definitely grown plants. Okay yeah
00:33yeah so what's what's this all about then so this is kind of the entrance to
00:38the village isn't it as you come from Cosford kind of way and is this all
00:42about brightening the place up yeah? Yeah there is the visual about
00:47brightening the place up but there is a bit more sort of ecological value so
00:51improving the biodiversity of the verges to help the pollinators and then in
00:56turn sort of helping the invertebrates birds and mammals. Fantastic. The Verge is a
01:04nature corridor we've got the nature reserve over there yeah and we've got a
01:08coronation garden just around the corner where we've done a real wilding project
01:12and the idea is to connect all of these wild spaces together and we want these
01:18young people involved because you know they're going to be the custodians of
01:23these wild spaces in the future. Yeah and it's it's are you learning that you know
01:27just a little patch of grass next to a road it can be a lot more than that
01:31can't it? It can be something you know more special if you put a bit of work in. So
01:35Elsie you've been putting your back into it have you? How many plants do you reckon you've planted?
01:3820. 20? Good going. Albie how many?
01:431440. Okay good I thought you were going to say 21 then. So what have you been planting? Can you remember the names of some of the plants you've been planting?
01:52Buttercups. You buttercups yeah. Cornflowers. Cornflowers. Cool yeah.
02:01Natweed. Natweed. Natweed.
02:06Oxide daisies. Yeah look at that. Oxide daisies, there's red campion, white campion, there's a bit of a superhero of a plant called yellow rattle.
02:17Okay yeah I've heard of that yeah. So it's semi-paracety corn grass. Yeah. So it helps to sort of manage the grass in the future. Okay. So we've got a few of those sort of jotted about.
02:28So these are all specially selected plants then for the hard work that they do. How many plants do you reckon you're going to be planting in total then Rachel?
02:36What do we reckon? Do you think we've got about a thousand? Or we've got more than 200? I'm hoping that along this stretch we've got a thousand odd plants.
02:46A thousand odd plants. That sounds like a lot of hard work and a few sore backs for mums and dads.
02:51I think so. But you've been having fun though?
02:54Yes yeah. Yeah so you're all involved in scouts you guys? Yeah. I've got cubs. Cubs as well.
03:00So it's great isn't it? You do some great stuff with cubs and scouts. Cool. You're getting out and about.
03:07And what's the best thing been about today? I really like planting all the plants.
03:13Yeah. Do you think you might be getting involved in the garden at home a bit more after today?
03:17Yeah I used to do a lot of planting. I'm going to start doing that.
03:20Okay. Okay good stuff. And Elsie do you do much at home in the garden?
03:24I do help my mum make a flower bed around the massive tree in my garden.
03:30Oh well that's good. Well done. Well done. Well thank you for all your hard work that we can all enjoy.
03:35I mean I don't live in Old Brighton but I drive through here so I should be looking next time I come past here to see.
03:39Are they flowering? I guess it'll be next summer we'll see them shining won't be at the best do you think?
03:44I don't have something this summer. Yeah yeah. But it'll be a few years before we get a real sort of flower.
03:51I think one plant that does have a little flower. I think it's one of the corn flowers.
03:55Okay yeah yeah. How cool is it that like for years to come even when you're driving you'll be able to drive past and go
04:03see all them flowers there? Well I planted them years ago.
04:06Years time driving past it would look really nice.
04:08Exactly yeah. Well thank you guys for all your hard work. Well done. Thank you.
04:12Thank you. Thank you.
04:15All right I planted.
