Wolves in Portugal: A newcomer to camp and GK update with Liam Keen and Nathan Judah
Transcript
00:00Hello Nathan Juder, I'm here as ever with The Wolves Report, it's Mr Liam Keane,
00:04day five from Portugal and it's not got any cooler keynote. My word, it is hot today.
00:10I'm struggling, I really am. Imagine playing in it. We're just sat trying to get any kind of shade
00:16possible and these guys are busting their gut for a good two-hour session. One of the staff
00:21over there said to me it was about 32, it feels hotter and the humidity is through the roof.
00:28I mean it's not fun. Everyone at home is feeling sorry for
00:32ourselves. I was just about to say that, I don't want to make it seem like we're whinging too much
00:35but my god, I mean even stood here doing this video, there's a little breeze now which makes
00:39me feel a little bit better. It's not easy. A long session for the boys there, worked hard
00:42though didn't they? They did, they did. It was just over an hour and a half wasn't it?
00:47And as we came out here we were wondering whether they might cut it short a little bit or slow it
00:53down, just not because the players couldn't do it but just to sort of safeguard them a little
00:57because the weather's intense and they did an afternoon session yesterday which we weren't at
01:01and apparently it was even hotter then but they didn't, they didn't take their foot off the gas
01:04at all. Vito had them going through their paces big time. I feel tired watching them do it and
01:10you see all the goalkeepers and all their skins and joggers so that they don't obviously get burns
01:15diving around and stuff and I just don't know how to get through it. It must be incredibly difficult.
01:19But yeah lots of really good stuff, lots of intensity based around one, two touches,
01:24releasing the ball quickly, pockets of space, attacking drills and yeah you pick out a few
01:30individuals and they you know it starts to look promising from maybe some people that we aren't
01:34expecting to do well. No and one new participant today. Yes, obviously Wes Ogudu which we'd already
01:41reported went home with a minor knee injury so they replaced him with another young lad from the
01:45academy. Ethan Sutherland who's been around it a little bit before, been out on loan as well and
01:49is a sort of similar position, one of the wing back, full back positions and you know he came
01:53out and seemed to do relatively well from what we saw. You don't want to big up young lads that
01:58haven't had a chance too much because it's probably a little bit unfair on them but I have to mention
02:02that I thought Leo Lopez did really well again today. We saw him in the game against Santa Clara did
02:06well, a couple of nice goals, really good crosses and again it's a training scenario so you don't
02:11want to go too overboard but yeah I thought he did pretty well. Sam Johnson made some good saves
02:15by the way as well, I think that's worth mentioning and they started to set up you know looking ahead
02:21to further training games, starting to set up in some 11s and work through some formations. Yeah,
02:26exactly yeah so yeah looking good. And with the recruitment and look we hope that Arias will be
02:31here sooner rather than later and I'm sure there'll be a few more to come, they need to be versatile don't
02:36they need to adapt there'll be different scenarios of different players can can fill different positions as
02:40well and this is a great place to practice it. Yeah and not just in terms of personnel but in terms
02:45of starters as well. We know having spoken to Leo Lopez, that interview is out at the moment,
02:49he's spoken about you know the the manager wanting to you know control possession and we saw a lot of
02:54that under V12 last season as well obviously certain games that isn't possible but you have to you know
02:58adapt the game plan depending on how you're gonna best win that game and we've seen that a lot in
03:02training but what we also saw today was a lot of long ball stuff as well um Agbadi with one hell of a
03:08ping on him by the way from the sort of taking the goal kick hitting it to Kalajic or Larson.
03:13They were on the offence straight away weren't they? Exactly and to be fair to Larson and Kalajic
03:17I saw some really good knockdowns from both of them into the path of the likes of Leo Lopez,
03:22the likes of Lima, Keanu, Hooper, any overlapping tens as well so they're sort of working on different
03:28scenarios for different um for different games and different oppositions yeah which is exactly what
03:32you'd expect in this season. Yeah it's interesting I mean look they do need a few more but I think for the
03:36younger guys as well it's great because they might be training with the 21s or whatever regularly in
03:40the season they might not get a lot of first team action but to be in there with Vito on their
03:44shoulder if they if they do something good then he's praising them do something bad he's talking
03:48to them tactically as well and that information is invaluable for those. Yeah absolutely um he's
03:52also not afraid to tell them as well um there was moments out there where um definitely not you know
03:57getting angry or going mental. Not just the youngsters I mean even for Lopez as well. Yeah exactly but also
04:01telling people look you're doing this wrong no no this is how we're doing it. Yeah um so he's he's
04:05firm he's demanding but he's also as we know and as fans know and the players know you know a good
04:10person to get along with an easy going guy but that doesn't mean that he's going to be a walkover
04:13doesn't mean he's going to allow the players to to get away with it um and he's been firm with you
04:17like that including some of the other lads as well because it's difficult for them young guys when
04:22you know the squad does need a little bit of work they're coming out to make the numbers they're not
04:26obviously going to be at the level of someone who's played 50 100 Premier League games yeah and they're having to then
04:31step up into that and there's a couple of them that have done really well uh in those moments
04:34we mentioned Alfie Ponte with that Santa Clara game um despite the goal obviously which is all
04:39out there but um it's not easy for those players to do that but Vito's also trying to get the best
04:44out of them as well um and that can only be good for their development but also for the team's
04:47benefit during training. Let's talk a little bit about the goalkeeper situation before we go um
04:50four goalkeepers out here and we reported yesterday Jose Saar's got a slight eye injury doesn't
04:54seem to be serious but won't take any further part of this trip yeah uh so you've got Sam
04:58Johnston he's still here by the way he's still here yeah he's doing some yeah work and stuff like
05:02but uh Sam Johnston like you said did very well today in training uh you've got Tom King you've
05:05got Dan Bentley who you're going to speak to later on at the team hotel in terms of the game then
05:09they've got one more game to come in pre-season Tom King and Dan Bentley were the two keepers in 45
05:14minutes it'll be interesting to see if we do see Sam Johnston because the goalkeeping department
05:18there's a bit of speculation there you can understand why he didn't quite work for Sam Johnston last season
05:22whether he moves on or not if he does play then it'll be interesting to see how he does but if he doesn't
05:28you can kind of read between the lines two games he's out here he's fully training he hasn't been
05:32part of it yeah yeah exactly and I think we all expect he probably will get a move somewhere
05:38because look he's not going to play the age he's at the experience he's got it hasn't quite worked
05:42since he's been here at Wolves I don't think that's um you know a new thing to say everyone's aware of it
05:46to his credit I think this is also fair to say he's carried himself relatively well I think in training
05:53um we were finding a way in the shade over there and he came to hide away with us now that we had a
05:59quick chat about dealing with the heat and look he's a nice guy he's you know decent enough guy to get along with
06:04um we've also got to be objective with what we've seen and didn't go well last season um he's clearly not a bad goalkeeper
06:09but the move just didn't quite work and we will be interested to see if he plays any more part in
06:15training games here while we're still here and of course going into games back in England as well
06:20but I think it's still fair we're probably expecting to move on as well as well you doubt there's four
06:25keepers here at the start of the season I think so I mean don't get me wrong it's a tiny group and
06:30it's a decent group of goalkeepers um good characters obviously they're helpful with the leadership
06:35and things like that there's obviously lots of pros to it I was not sure you necessarily need
06:39to have before um but it would depend on if you know if they decide to bring someone in it depends
06:43who that fourth one is if it's a 21 year old lad who's gonna you know build his way up and that
06:47doesn't necessarily mean mean it's a bad thing but um yeah I think to have four senior ones is probably
06:52not quite the way to go and then just describing the rest of the day we're going to go back to the
06:56team hotel now we're going to speak to Dan Bentley and we've got a sit down with Jean-ric de Bellegarde
07:00JJ as they call it a rare sit down yeah very rare which is great for us because
07:04I've actually never interviewed him before doesn't do a lot of interviews doesn't do a lot
07:07with the club or um external media um he's been getting getting there with his english um and fair
07:14play to him for doing it so we're really looking forward to that there's lots of really good
07:18topics that that we're gonna gonna cover with him and hopefully uh get some good answers
07:22plenty more to come on expressastar.com
