So we're here in Albrighton and we've just had some rain which means it's an
00:04
excellent time for planting. Rachel who do you represent here I can see is that a
00:10
Scouts logo I've got? First Albrighton Scouts. Yeah and who've we got with you?
00:15
Elsie. And there's a whole gang of you isn't there is this all Scouts and parents is it or is it a bit of
00:23
villagers chucked in us? We've got the wider community involved if they're not
00:29
here planting they've definitely grown plants okay yeah yeah so what's what's
00:35
this all about then so this is kind of the entrance to the village isn't it as
00:39
you come from Cosford kind of way and is this all about brightening the place up
00:44
yeah and yeah there is the visual about brightening the place up but there is a
00:49
bit more sort of ecological value so improving the biodiversity of the
00:53
verges yeah to help the pollinators and then in turn sort of helping the
00:59
invertebrates birds and mammals. Fantastic. The verge is a nature corridor
01:05
we've got the nature reserve over there yeah and we've got a coronation garden just
01:10
around the corner where we've done a real wilding project and the idea is to
01:14
connect all of these wild spaces together and we want these young people involved
01:19
because you know they're going to be the custodians of these wild spaces in the
01:24
future yeah and it's it's are you learning that you know just a little patch of
01:28
grass next to a road it can be a lot more than that can't it it can be something
01:32
you know more special if you put a bit of work in so Elsie you've been putting your
01:36
back into it have you how many plants do you reckon you've planted 20 20 good going
01:41
I'll be how many? 1340. Okay good I thought you were gonna say 21 then so what have you been
01:48
plant do you can you remember the names of some of the plants you've been planting?
01:51
Buttercups. You buttercups yeah. Cornflowers. Cornflowers. Cool yeah.
01:59
Natweed. Natweed. Natweed.
02:04
Natweed. Oxide daisies. Yeah look at that. Oxide daisies there's red campion white campion
02:13
there's the bit of a superhero of a plant called yellow rattle okay yeah I've heard of that yeah
02:19
so it's a semi-parasitic corn grass yeah so it helps to sort of manage the grass in the future
02:25
okay so we've got a few of those sort of jotted about so these are all specially selected plants
02:31
then for um for the hard work that they do how many plants do you reckon you're going to be
02:35
planting in total then Rachel what do we reckon do you think we've got about a thousand or we've got
02:41
more than 200 I'm hoping that along this stretch we've got a thousand odd plants a thousand odd
02:47
plants that sounds like a lot of hard work and a few sore backs for moms and dads but you've been
02:53
having fun though yeah so you're all involved in scouts you guys so we're cubs as well and what's um
03:01
so it's it's great isn't it you do some great stuff with cubs and scouts
03:05
cool you're getting out and about and what's the best thing been about today
03:10
I really like planting all the plants yeah do you think you might be getting involved in the garden
03:16
at home a bit more after today yeah I used to do a lot of planting okay okay good stuff and Elsie
03:22
do you do much at home in the garden um I do help my mum make out like the flower bed around
03:28
a massive tree in my garden oh well that's good well done well done well thank you for all your
03:33
hard work that we can all enjoy I mean I don't live in Old Brighton but I drive through here so I
03:38
should be looking next time I come past here see are they flowering I guess it'll be next summer
03:42
we'll see them shining won't be at the best do you think I don't have something this summer yeah yeah
03:47
but it'll be a few years before we get a real sort of get established I believe one plant that does
03:53
have a little flower I think it's one of the corned flowers okay yeah yeah how cool is it that like
03:59
for years to come even when you're driving you'll be able to drive past and go see all them flowers
04:04
there well I planted them years ago yeah exactly yeah well thank you guys for all your hard work
04:11
well done thank you thank you
