The first tropical depression of 2025 is taking shape off the coast of western Mexico as of May 29. It is likely to form into Tropical Storm Alvin as the first named storm.
Transcript
00:00We have our first tropical depression here. This is tropical depression 1E. This is going to become
00:07Alvin here by this afternoon, we think, as it moves to the north-northwest here. In fact,
00:13the exclusive vacuum with the forecast does have this wrapping up to a tropical storm. Wouldn't be
00:17shocked if this tried to become a hurricane at some point later tonight or Friday. Now,
00:23as it moves northward, it's going to start weakening a little bit, although there can be
00:27some rain and some rain and some wind across the southern tip of Baja, California. And
00:32eventually, as you get this little upper low to form off the California, Southern California coast
00:38this weekend, that'll pull some of the moisture northward. We're going to start seeing some
00:41showers and thunderstorms in the Four Corners area. Not the worst news in the world. It's been dry
00:46there, but sometimes with those thunderstorms and lightning, you can start a fire. But we think
00:52there's enough moisture that there could also be some flash flooding here. All right. We're also
00:57getting into the Atlantic hurricane season. That'll be on Sunday. Now, early season development
01:02different than development that you see during the heart of hurricane season, because the way you get
01:07development this time of the year is an interaction between the jet stream and the tropics. How does
01:11that happen? When the jet stream dips southward here, and it does a couple of things. It either
01:16brings an upper low that can sit over warm water, or it brings a frontal boundary that can form over
01:21warmer, that sits over warmer water, or you get the Central American gyre, an area of low pressure,
01:26to develop. Either way, you can get an area of low pressure. You start getting showers and
01:31thunderstorms as moisture feeds northward. Eventually, you get an area of low pressure to
01:36form, and that's how it can develop. Now, it usually takes some time. This process of this
01:42dip in the jet stream is starting here. Nothing right now, and I don't think there's anything this
01:47weekend. But as we get in the Sunday and Monday, watch this dip in the jet stream. Here it comes.
01:52And then eventually, by the time we get into early next week, there it is. Now, it'll take a few days
01:58for develop if it does. But this is an area to watch. The Northern Caribbean, then the Gulf of Mexico,
02:05at the very least, there's going to be moisture coming northward into Florida.
02:08But let's keep an eye on this area late next week.
