AccuWeather forecasters are keeping a close eye on the Caribbean for possible tropical development before the hurricane season officially begins.
Transcript
00:00We're still keeping an eye on Central America and officially just in two and a half to three days we're into the East Pacific hurricane season.
00:08It begins May 15th. We technically wait until June 1st for the Atlantic.
00:12We're watching a zone of moisture here. There's also a trough over parts of the Yucatan.
00:16There will be an increase, increase in moisture through this weekend and even into the next week with tropical downpours.
00:23And this is going to be increasing through the second half of the month with tropical downpours across much of Central America.
00:28Now, there is often this thing that we call a gyre that forms over Central America.
00:35It's a large swirl of often disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
00:39It's a little bit broader than your typical low-pressure system, so it's not necessarily focused over a really easily plotted point.
00:46It's just kind of a broad circulation zone, often near Central America.
00:49But when we get a strong trough to push through the Gulf, which only really happens in the early or very late part of the season,
00:57but we often look to this in the early part of the season, this can push a little bit more flow from northwest to southeast.
01:03That can help to kind of spin this up, and it works in tandem with the easterlies, the trade winds that help to fuel some of this on the north side.
01:12So we'll be watching this area of interest here from around the end of this week in through the following week here as, again, there's a small chance we could see a gyre develop.
01:22In fact, if we look at the modeling here, the maroon is where we have abundant moisture.
01:27And look at this, lots and lots of moisture out here.
01:29And this particular depiction of the future does show that we might begin to see an area of circulation form and drift west on the Pacific side,
01:38ultimately out of this big zone of moisture.
01:40So we're going to be watching both the Atlantic and the Pacific side between May 17th, that's the end of this week,
01:46through the following week for some potential low chances of development.
