00:00Welcome back to Ireland in View. Visitors ask, do we really need a higher car in Ireland?
00:05Most of the time we answer yes, but come with us as we see if Dublin to Kerry without a car in seven days is possible.
00:13How can I get from Dublin City to my first stop Wicklow National Park? Tag along as we have a look.
00:20Dublin to Enniscary is an hour and a half drive, but with this handy app transport for Ireland on your phone, we can find alternatives.
00:28The dark train to Wicklow Station and the bus to Enniscary or a taxi is one route.
00:35Powerscourt House is a short walk from Enniscary Village.
00:38To Powerscourt Falls and Glendalough Village, you either take a taxi onwards or small group tours directly from Dublin.
00:45There is a bus to Glendalough directly from Dublin connecting the 65 and the 183 through Blessington to Glendalough Village,
00:54which is a fabulous scenic route over the Wicklow Gap.
00:58So it is possible to get to the heart of Wicklow on public transport from Dublin.
01:03Getting to Kilkenny might be more difficult.
01:05But while you are here, let's walk around.
01:08First off, let's look at Powerscourt House.
01:10Open from 9.30 to 5.30 in high season, seven days a week.
01:15With 47 acres of manicured gardens, a garden centre and much more.
01:19The highest falls in Ireland, close to Powerscourt, are also open and charge a small entry fee.
01:26Again, there are specific bus tours directly from Dublin.
01:29An ideal spot for a Sunday barbecue or a picnic.
01:34It has been the setting for many movie productions over the years.
01:37With travelling back to Dublin, that's one day done.
01:39But in fairness, you really need two days and stay in the Glendalough Hotel in the village.
01:45The Glendalough settlement dates to the 6th century.
01:48For walkers, the trails through the valley are so varied and cater for all physical strengths.
01:55There is a visitor centre between the lakes with catering, etc.
01:58So next stop, Kilkenny, and the only way is back to Dublin and the train out of Euston Station on the Waterford Line.
02:06Book your train tickets about three weeks ahead and reserve your carriage and seating.
02:11Luggage space is available in most carriages.
02:13Even bicycles can be catered for.
02:16Kilkenny is a walkable city.
02:18Its main attraction are the castle, home of the Butler dynasty, who sold it for £50 to a preservation committee.
02:26And it's now under the control of the Irish state.
02:30Built in 1260, but now mostly decorated from the Victorian era, it has an extensive collection of antiques and open parkland.
02:39A short walk away is St. Canis's Cathedral, run by the Church of Ireland with Norman influences and really ornate windows.
02:47Beside it is a well-preserved round tower that you can climb, a relic of the earlier civilisation that was sited there.
02:54The round tower dates from the 9th century and is only one of three in Ireland, which can still be climbed to the top.
03:01After a day in Kilkenny, as we journey on, you have a number of choices.
03:05To visit the Rock of Cashel, you need to travel by bus.
03:09And then if you would like to see another castle, connect with the bus to Caghir and stop off at the castle there.
03:15Decisions, decisions.
03:17We can show you both and you decide.
03:19Caghir Castle, like so many, including Kilkenny, was built by the Normans after the 12th century invasion.
03:26Caghir has been used in movies and is very well preserved.
03:29The last movie filmed was in 2020.
03:32The last do.
03:33So at this stage we are around four days from Dublin, and after seeing through the Rock of Cashel, we will make our way to Kenmare by way of Killarney.
03:42So at this stage we are going to be able to see.
