00:00Hi, everyone. With so much turmoil in the world today, many families are considering moving to Ireland.
00:05Welcome back to Ireland in View, a regular deep dive into Irish life today.
00:10So here's the bad with the good.
00:13Ten bad things followed by the ten best things about living and working in Ireland in 2025.
00:18So let's give you the facts and not the myths.
00:21We will also give you some useful tips to ease your transition.
00:25So grab a cup of tea and let's get started.
00:28You will find Ireland works at a slower pace from what you might be used to.
00:32First, let's quickly give you some staggering numbers to put things in perspective.
00:37From 2020 to 2025, Ireland welcomed a vibrant mix of new residents.
00:42In April 2024, Ireland had a net population increase of nearly 99,000 people over the previous year.
00:49The total population was 5,380,000, the highest since the potato famine of the 1840s.
00:58149,200 immigrants, which was a 17-year high.
01:03This was the third successive 12-month period where over 100,000 people immigrated to Ireland.
01:09Of those immigrants, 30,000 were returning Irish citizens.
01:1327,000 were other EU citizens.
01:16And 5,400 were UK citizens.
01:19The remaining 86,800 immigrants were citizens of other countries, made up of those fleeing war in Ukraine and those who were economic and genuine asylum seekers.
01:28Secondly, that has put a huge strain on Irish government resources, with housing, education and health care being particularly under strain.
01:36Ukrainian immigrants being responsible for the large increase in numbers due to the war.
01:42This has led to the far-right exploitation of the situation, with street protests and blockades of buildings housing immigrants.
01:49Thirdly, add to this the chronic housing shortage with high rents and moving to Ireland is not for the faint-hearted.
01:55However, inward emigration is expected to fall in coming years.
01:59And fourthly, renters are now paying sometimes 50% of their income on rent.
02:04Dublin rents are now around €2,300 per month on average.
02:09So if you can, avoid Dublin, unless it's essential as you will struggle to find accommodation.
02:14It is one of the factors starting to limit business growth currently.
02:18And fifthly, our cost of living, which might surprise you.
02:21The first thing that often catches newcomers by surprise is the high cost of living, particularly in Dublin, where housing shortages lead to sky-high rents.
02:29Currently, we are building 30,000 housing units per year when we need 50,000 units.
02:35And the government, despite its efforts, does not look like getting on top of it anytime soon.
02:41So unless you have deep pockets, keep an eye on that one.
02:44Dublin homes range in price from $450,000 upwards, while the average for Ireland as a whole is now $350,000, with a rise of 7% a year in Dublin alone.
02:55Number six on our list, to be aware of if you want to move here.
02:59On top of that, the healthcare system, while accessible, can mean long waiting times for non-urgent procedures.
03:06And number seven, our famous climate.
03:09And yes, the infamous Irish weather, wet and often overcast, can be quite the adjustment.
03:14On top of all that, number eight, the bureaucratic visa process can be daunting, with many facing rejection due to incomplete paperwork.
03:22Number nine, car insurance, and number ten, getting a driver's license, unless you already have one from the UK or the EU.
03:30An American license cannot be exchanged for Irish, but some Canadian licenses are accepted here.
03:35In rural Ireland, you do need a car.
03:38Plus, newcomers often find themselves navigating steep car insurance rates and the labyrinthine driver's license process.
03:45But it's not all bad news.
03:47Let's shift to the positive aspects of making Ireland your new home.

03:54We have a large number of helpful videos on our playlist to help you visit Ireland.
03:58Useful links will be in the description.
04:01First and foremost, the Irish are renowned for their friendly and inclusive communities.
04:06You'll find a welcoming atmosphere in a vibrant cultural scene that offers a healthy work-life balance.
04:11High salaries in tech, pharma, and finance are certainly a sweetener,
04:15as is the possibility of applying for citizenship after five years of residency.
04:19If your grandmother was Irish, you can get Irish citizenship eventually down that route.
04:24And don't forget about the safety and low pollution levels.
04:27Ireland is known for its low crime rates and clean air.
04:30Plus, there are no power blackouts to worry about.
04:33Now, if you're thinking about making the move,
04:35here's what you need to know about visas and the skills Ireland is currently looking for.
04:39You'll need to pick the right visa type, whether it's for work, study, or family reunification.
04:45The application process involves submitting documentation online,
04:49and it's crucial to have everything translated and complete.
04:52Ireland is particularly interested in professionals in IT, pharmaceuticals, finance, engineering, and healthcare.
04:59But be aware that not all qualifications obtained abroad will be accepted in Ireland.
05:03So make sure that you check your degree first before thinking of coming here.
05:08And here are some quick tips.
05:09If you're considering the move, check the latest critical skills occupations list to see if your profession is in demand.
05:17Make sure your financial paperwork is in order.
05:19Arrange temporary accommodation ahead of time.
05:22Consider getting private healthcare insurance.
05:24Join local expat forums for advice and support.
05:27For those seeking a different experience, some expats choose rural Ireland for lower costs and a quieter lifestyle,
05:34albeit with fewer job opportunities.
05:36Entrepreneurs and non-EU students also find Ireland appealing,
05:40but should be prepared for challenges like bureaucracy and high tuition fees.
05:44As of July 2025, the Irish government is debating whether to increase yearly tuition fees
05:50back to the previous year's rate of €3,000 a year.
05:54And so far, no one has been able to say, definitively, a debacle of the government's own creation.
05:59Students will also find higher accommodation costs.
06:02There you have it.
06:03A comprehensive look at the immigration scene in Ireland.
06:06Whether you're drawn by the opportunities or the culture, there's a lot to consider.
06:10In conclusion, if you want to live in Ireland, you really need to be independent financially.
06:15We have a number of infrastructure issues that the government has not addressed.
06:19The two main ones are the lack of new house building numbers
06:22and the large incoming immigrant numbers, which are not sustainable.
06:26We are training Irish teachers, nurses, and others who cannot afford to live, pay rent, or buy a home.
06:32So they are emigrating.
06:34So think very carefully about Ireland as your forever home.
