00:00Welcome back to Ireland in View. Planning a trip to Dublin, Ireland?
00:04In this video, we will show you what not to do in Dublin as a tourist,
00:08from overpriced tourist traps to misunderstandings about Irish culture.
00:13There are 1,500 more hotel beds in Dublin in 2025,
00:17so with cheaper rates, what better time to plan a visit?
00:20Let's see if we can show you how to navigate the city like a local.
00:24Let's start by telling you the most obvious thing but least understood.
00:27The first thing you don't need in Dublin is a rental car.
00:31It's a walkable city and for €2 a time, the bus and tram line, the Lewis, will get you around.
00:37Some buses run all night.
00:38Getting from the airport to the city, air coach or Dublin bus do a great service for under €10.
00:44So, number one, you don't need a car in Dublin.
00:46By the way, if you want more factual information on how best to visit Ireland, please subscribe and follow.
00:52We publish up-to-date videos every week. Thank you.
00:55Number two, taxis are metered.
00:57Never assume your driver is honest.
01:00The meter should only be switched on when you are in the car and not before.
01:04That's a trick some drivers pull.
01:06But be aware, the rate changes with time of day and at weekends.
01:10Passenger numbers also make a difference.
01:13Use Google Maps on your phone with your hotel in the search and track your journey, especially if it's long.
01:18If it differs from your phone route, you should query it with the driver.
01:23Some drivers will give you a fixed price for long journeys, for example, intercity, so you know where you stand.
01:30Taxis will be marked with a large yellow marker on each side.
01:34Uber will be a taxi also.
01:36Free Now is a taxi app on your phone for hailing cabs, which can be useful.
01:40Links, as always, in the description.
01:43If you are in a taxi, you can pay by credit or debit card, despite what some drivers might try and tell you.
01:49Cash is king no more.
01:51By law, they must accept cards.
01:54Number three, like any large city anywhere, never take chances with your mobile phone or purse.
01:59Unfortunately, in crowded places, pickpockets can be operating.
02:03Keep all bags closed and valuables in view at all times.
02:08Number four, we have a large number of beggars on our city streets.
02:12Some are genuine, but many are not.
02:15What you do with your hard-earned cash is up to you, but we would advise if you want to help those in homeless,
02:21give to the homeless charities, such as the Simon Community or Focus Ireland.
02:25It's a controversial subject, and this is only our view.
02:28Yours may be totally different.
02:31Number five, eating out in Dublin, the etiquette.
02:34Never assume tables are available without booking.
02:37There are some great restaurants in Dublin and new ones coming on every year,
02:40from Chinese to Japanese to Thai to traditional Irish restaurants.
02:45Many good restaurants like the famous Trocadero on St. Andrew's Street, which we highly recommend.
02:50Need booked particularly for Friday and Saturday nights?
02:54Generally, now booking online is the usual method.
02:57Others, it's come when you're hungry and it's more casual, tipping usually 5% to 10% for good service.
03:04Certainly no more.
03:05Number six, getting round the city on public transport.
03:08As we said earlier, public transport in Dublin is good.
03:11Never assume you need a car.
03:13It's a walkable city and easy to get around.
03:16But if you do need to use the bus in Lewis, the tram system, it's pretty simple.
03:21A leap card is handy and cheaper, but for visitors, it's hardly worthwhile.
03:25Cash and coinage is the preferred payment on buses.
03:28They cannot take notes or give change.
03:31The good news is a lot of this change goes to various charities, so it's not swallowed up by corporate greed.
03:37The Lewis will take notes and give change on the platform ticket machines.
03:41Punch in your destination and the fare change and ticket will drop into the basket.
03:46You can even hire bicycles at various locations.
03:49Links again in the description.
03:51By the way, when getting off the bus, the age-old custom of thanking the bus driver still exists.
03:56Don't forget that one.
03:57It's important.
03:59Number seven.
04:00Never assume a three-star hotel will have five-star facilities.
04:04Irish hotels are rated three, four, and five-star.
04:07Three up to five with rising facilities where five will have a higher room rate.
04:11Never book into a three-star and expect five-star quality.
04:14You will get what you pay for.
04:16Some three-star hotels are extremely good.
04:18All Irish hotels and all buildings are smoke-free.
04:21If you smoke cigarettes in a hotel room, they can charge you up to a 250 euro fee.
04:28Be aware of that one.
04:29All rooms are fitted with smoke alarms and it's easy to catch you out.
04:33Here is some useful information.
04:35Most hotels have family rooms for up to five people.
04:38And if you arrive off the red-eye but can't check in until 3 p.m., they will store and look after your luggage so you can explore the city.
04:47Number eight.
04:47Never ignore your round.
04:50Bar etiquette.
04:51How to annoy people.
04:52If you meet strangers in a bar and they offer to buy you your favorite drink, never drop out of buying them one back.
04:57Even if you are leaving, always make sure if someone has bought you your favorite drink to thank their hospitality, buy them one back.
05:04It's our friendliness and hospitality and it's the way we do things always in Ireland.
05:09Our advice for travelers is never travel with huge cases unless for a weddings.
05:14Dublin has shops where you will get anything you need.
05:17A light plastic Mac to rainproof you and a few layers is all you need.
05:21We have Arnott's, Brown Thomas, Penny's here in Dublin and they go from the most expensive to the cheaper ranges of clothing.
05:28There are also shops selling hiking gear and anything else you may want.
05:32A carry-on bag is all we ever use when traveling.
05:35Never go to Temple Bar.
05:36Well, no, not really.
05:38Just be aware that the price of drink is high.
05:40Even great crack with some plastic patty as it always is.
05:43With a five-minute walk to South William Street or off Grafton Street prices will be much lower and you won't feel ripped off.
05:52And in the suburbs of, say, Klontarf, even lower again.
05:56Just so you are aware.
05:58This is a silly one, but a serious one.
06:00Crossing the street and the city always look right.
06:03As we drive on the left, traffic will be coming at you on the right, not the left where you might be used to.
06:08A simple one, but we don't want our visitors to get hurt or worse, killed.
06:12That's nearly it for this one.
06:14We hope we have helped you and enticed you to come to Dublin, our home in Capital City.
06:20We have loads more from all over Ireland on the playlist and there will be another next week.
06:25Take care.
06:25Thank you for watching Sláinte.
