00:00Welcome to the picturesque town of Dalkey, a 40-minute drive from Dublin city centre and the Irish home of the stars.
00:07In a little while, you will be amazed to see how many international stars of music, film and arts live here or have rented in one of the most wealthy towns in Ireland,
00:18where the quality of life comes before everything else.
00:23First, a look at the town they all chose to live in.
00:26It's a small, compact heritage town on the Irish east coast.
00:31The streets are narrow, so it's not the place for large SUVs.
00:34It's built just off Killiney Hill, and no matter where you look eastwards, the sea views are spectacular, particularly out eastwards towards Dalkey Island.
00:44A small, uninhabited island with a church and a martello tower, built for coastal defence between 803 to 808,
00:53primarily to thwart any French invasion.
00:56The 25-acre island is currently uninhabited, but there is evidence of human occupation dating back to the Neolithic period.
01:04The remains of field systems, a church dedicated to St. Benedict, a cairn burial, a gun battery which had three 24-pound guns,
01:12and the martello tower still exist.
01:14The Dart train line runs along the coast.
01:17Dublin area, rapid transit to give it its correct name, and this train is worth taking just for the views alone.
01:24It runs along the edge of the cliffs and the sea.
01:27Starting in central Dublin, you can board at Terra Street Station and finish up in Bray or Wicklow.
01:32Dalkey Town itself is compact and easy to walk around, with lots of pubs like Finnegan's, frequented by U2's Bono occasionally.
01:42On the Coleymore Road is the Club Bar restaurant, where the food is good.
01:47Beside it is Ragazzi Italian Restaurant, a busy little bistro.
01:51It is the perfect place to enjoy some traditional Italian food.
01:56Also, the Coleymore and the Dalkey Duck are two more.
01:59Traditional Irish pubs, outside tables make dining a pleasure as traffic is light,
02:05and when the Irish sun shines, it makes a perfect setting for family get-togethers in summer.
02:09Dalkey is a very unspoilt town.
02:13One of the many attractions in Dalkey after you have visited its hospitality is Dalkey Castle,
02:19at the north end of the town as you arrive from Dublin.
02:22It is a heritage town, and has one of the remaining small townhouse castles,
02:27dating from the 14th century, one of the remaining of seven rare, fortified, medieval townhouse castles.
02:35Its tours are interactive, with a touch of theatre on every tour.
02:40It is a genuine medieval Irish castle, with professional local guides and actors in period costume who perform for you.
02:47Closed on Tuesday and booking advised.
02:51If after all that, and you like walking, check out Killiney Hill and Dalkey Hill Park,
02:57a small public park overlooking both Dalkey and Killiney Villages.
03:02The views of Dublin in all directions are spectacular from this vantage point,
03:07especially from atop the pyramid or wishing stone.
03:10You can see Wales in the UK on a clear day.
03:13The unique obelisk sits for all to see from miles away.
03:18Check out its history.
03:20The hill is just a 16-minute walk from Killiney Dart Station.
03:24Finally, let's look around Collymore Harbour.
03:27It's set beneath the rock cliffs down Collymore Road, and it's small.
03:32Amazingly small.
03:33It's stunningly sheltered by the hill behind.
03:35On certain days, you can take a boat trip out to Dalkey Island when the sea is calm enough.
03:40We were not brave enough, as it was fairly windy, and we had no warm clothes.
03:45In conclusion, Dalkey Heritage Town is a place we would recommend you visit.
03:50With lots to do visiting Dalkey Heritage Town, don't forget the lobster and book festivals held each year.
03:57We hope that covers an in-depth look around Dalkey, and you enjoyed it.
04:01You are liable to bump into Bono or the Edge, and living nearby is Enya at Manderley Castle, and also singer Krista Berg.
04:11And the Belfast man, Van Morrison.
04:14It was the home of famous Irish writer the late Maeve Binchy.
04:18Former residents include the actress Jane Seymour, and the list reads like a who's who of international celebrities,
04:24from musicians to film producers like Neil Jordan and racing driver Eddie Irvine.
04:29Pierce Brosnan, Mel Gibson, have all lived in the town.
04:33Please follow us and share if you like what we are doing.
04:37Take care, and we hope to see you in the next one.
