93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia. I'm Pierre Robert. Our guest this afternoon, it's safe to say,
00:05
has music running through his veins and has since he was a very young child. Most people would know
00:11
him through two of the giant bands he was a huge part of, certainly Guns N' Roses and Velvet
00:15
Revolver, but there have been so many more musical projects through the years. If all of that's not
00:20
enough, he's also a best-selling New York Times author. His last book in 2015 was called How to
00:25
Be a Man and Other Illusions. He and another amazing musician by the name of Shooter Jennings
00:31
have collaborated on what will be his third solo album. It's called Tenderness. We're also lucky
00:36
because they start their tour introducing this music and this new record right here in Philadelphia
00:41
at the TLA. Joined today by John Schreffler on guitar, it's a great pleasure to welcome Duff
00:46
McKagan to WMMR. Thank you, guys. I'd like to dedicate the song to Scott Weiland, Prince,
00:53
Chris Cornell, and Chester Bennington. It's called Feel.
01:10
You're here, still here. Some are gone, brothers, sisters, and moms.
01:22
Someone you love. He had enough. He went back to drugs. I guess he had enough. Feel when the lights
01:43
go down. You are still here. All you hold dear remain. I feel when the lights go down. You
01:59
You are still here. All you hold dear remain.
02:04
Hard knocks, bad luck. You've been knocked down. You got back up. Rise up. Shine on. You keep on fighting the war.
02:09
The war is almost done. But then I hear you go.
02:16
Hard knocks, bad luck. You've been knocked down. You got back up. Rise up. Shine on. You keep on fighting the war. It's almost done.
02:36
But then I hear you go. Feel when the lights go down. You are still here. All I hold dear remain.
02:53
I feel when the lights go down. You are still here. All you hold dear remain.
03:08
You're still here. Some of the lights go down. You'll see.
03:29
Your style never fades
03:37
Your style never fades

Your style never fades
03:59
All that remains
04:02
Is the love in my hands
04:10
I feel
04:14
When the lights go down
04:17
You are still here
04:20
All I hope to remain
04:23
I feel
04:28
That first picture framed
04:31
My heart remains
04:35
From that first day the same
04:38
I feel
04:42
When the lights go down
04:46
You are still here
04:49
All you hold dear remain
04:52
I feel
04:56
When the lights go down

All you hold dear

Remake
05:09
The song is called Feel from the latest album, Tenderness.
05:21
Duff McKagan is with us and John Schreffler on guitar.
05:24
I was going to save the heavier part still later, but you opened by dedicating that to Chris Cornell.
05:29
And the song is about a lot of those that we have lost over the last few years.
05:33
Obviously, you knew Chris.
05:35
What was your experience of Chris?
05:37
Yeah, except for Prince, I knew all those guys very well.
05:41
And Chris, you know, I go back a long time.
05:45
We're both from Seattle.
05:46
So before I moved to L.A., I knew Chris.
05:49
And early 80s, we're the same age.
05:55
Our wives were pregnant with our babies at the same time.
05:59
So we had, you know, little babies together and did all that stuff.
06:03
That new fatherdom, nerdy stuff you do and have really great, wonderful memories of him.
06:08
And still kind of find myself going, you know.
06:15
I did a gig with him just a couple of years ago with McCready and Barrett Martin.
06:19
We did a Mad Season show.
06:22
And Lane's gone.
06:23
So Chris filled Lane.
06:26
And Baker, the bass player, is gone.
06:27
So I filled in Baker's slot.
06:29
And we played with the Seattle Symphony Mad Season at the Benray Hall.
06:33
It was amazing.
06:34
So that was just, I mean, a couple of years ago.
06:38
It seems that was 2015.
06:40
Well, he sat right where you were sitting and has played for us a number of times on this program.
06:45
And I didn't know him well, but I was crushed by it.
06:48
You know, and you could see that he had demons, as a lot of the people do, that have been affected by addiction.
06:55
And it seemed like he had conquered them.
06:57
And then yet, you know, out of the blue comes, you know, this mystery as to what took place as to, you know, why we lose him and Chester.
07:05
And, you know, some of the others are a little more obvious, like, you know, Scott or even Prince.
07:10
I didn't know that he had a drug problem.
07:12
But, you know, we discover these things sometimes afterwards.
07:16
But the ones that you think have dealt with the monsters, particularly Chris and Chester come to mind.
07:21
And then all of a sudden, they haven't.
07:25
Yeah.
07:25
I mean, it's something I deal with.
07:28
And they're stark reminders to me to wake up every morning, look yourself in the mirror and go, okay, today is going to be a good day.
07:38
And I keep it sitting over on the table.
07:41
I recognize it.
07:42
I look at it.
07:43
It being the monsters.
07:45
The monsters, yeah.
07:47
You've got to recognize it.
07:48
If you ignore it, that's when you get into trouble.
07:51
I've found.
07:52
You've been sober how long?
07:55
25 years.
07:56
Wow.
07:57
That's great.
07:58
That deserves congratulations.
07:59
Congratulations.
