Peep Show: The Mall is Not a Drive Thru

Dave & Chuck the Freak fire up the 'Symphony of Destruction' after an elderly Massachusetts woman drove her car into the second level of an indoor mall trying to get to the Apple Store.

00:10Quite a day at the mall.

00:14I love the mall. I'm going to go to the mall.

00:17In Massachusetts, at South Shore Mall,

00:21a 78-year-old woman decided she wanted to go to the Apple store,

00:25which in itself is crazy.

00:27Do you think they sell actual fruit?

00:28Maybe, perhaps.

00:30One of them Honeycrisp.

00:31I am hungry.

00:33So she decided she would drive her SUV there.

00:36I got a big, big, big SUV.

00:41Unfortunately, the Apple store is on the upper level of an indoor mall.

00:47Well, I don't want to walk.

00:51Are you serious right now?

00:54First of all, thank you to the literally hundreds of Boston listeners

00:57that sent us this story.

00:59But a 78-year-old woman who was attempting to go to the Apple store

01:02drove her SUV through the upper walkway of the mall into the mall.

01:09That's a new one.

01:10Like an Apple store?

01:12Yeah.

01:12What do we have never, if you'd have said, hey, guess where this person crashed into?

01:16An Apple store on the second level?

01:18It's the only time.

01:19It's not on the list.

01:20To be honest, if I had to make a list of the least likely stores to ever be hit by an old person,

01:26the Apple store would have been one of the top pick.

01:28Top pick.

01:29Top pick.

01:29Absolutely.

01:29Now, luckily, she did not actually crash into the Apple store.

01:32They stopped her on the upper platform of the mall.

01:36Oh, that's good.

01:36But she was right in front of stores and people were walking there.

01:39Oh, man.

01:39Did people get video of this?

01:41There is a little bit, and especially the aftermath of an officer talking to her in the car.

01:48On the second story of the South Shore Mall, and some people that worked there filled us in on some details, too.

02:05But here's the story of what happened from WCVB-TV.

02:10Let's take a listen in.

02:11Literally had to drive from all the way down there to over here.

02:15This would be a great parking spot if this were an outdoor mall.

02:20Excuse me.

02:21But this car had to drive through automatic doors to wind up on the second floor of the South Shore Plaza.

02:27Apparently someone out there, she had asked for directions to the Apple store.

02:31They were like, it's inside.

02:32And then she drove inside.

02:33I pushed my granddaughters up against the wall, and I moved, and I stopped her.

02:39And she says, do you know how to get out of here?

02:42And I said, stay right here.

02:45I'll get somebody.

02:46Witnesses say the 78-year-old woman kept driving, even taking a left turn inside,

02:52ultimately traveling about 60 yards as people jumped out of the way.

02:56And then she lodged on the carriage holder.

02:58Oh, yeah, she didn't even see that.

03:00What the hell?

03:01She put her foot on the gas, and her wheel was spinning.

03:04A concrete post in the parking garage could have prevented the off-road odyssey,

03:08but police say it was missing after a recent accident.

03:12Tonight, the driver's sister tells me I don't know how she did it, but she won't be driving anymore.

03:17And now police are working to suspend her license.

03:21It's a blessing that no one got hurt, and I hope the woman is all right.

03:25She's reached the age in life.

03:28It was over 80 degrees yesterday in Massachusetts.

03:31She's reached the age that she's wearing a winter hat in the summer.

03:34She's not a typical 78-year-old.

03:38Well, I believe there is a shot.

03:40Well, yeah, you can kind of see her right there.

03:42Her eyes are at the steering wheel level, where the steering wheel is like basically you're

03:50looking just slightly over top of where the steering wheel is.

03:54I'm impressed that she could do that, though, driving there.

03:56I don't know.

03:57Like, how did she even do that?

03:58She did a good job.

04:00She didn't do anything.

04:01Well, right, she'll be in there.

04:02It's funny.

04:03The police officer's treating it like an actual traffic stop is what that looks like.

04:09Driver's license and insurance, ma'am.

04:11That's bizarre.

04:12There's hardly any room on either side of that vehicle, though, on this upper level

04:16of this mall, so it's all pretty crazy.

04:18I'm sure people were just flabbergasted.

04:19What's nuts, though, is she must have hit that thing and then finally figured it out,

04:25like how to get off of it.

04:26She was just spinning her tire or whatever, but it's not in front of her right there.

04:29That seemed like there was a lot of room wherever she hit that.

04:33That was, I believe, at the entrance.

04:34At the very entrance, right?

04:35Coming from the parking garage into the mall, where you'd get normally either a stroller or

04:39a cart, right?

04:40You'd put your money in and you'd push one of those things out.

04:42My God.

04:43That's what it looked like it was, and she just rammed through it.

04:46Yeah, she rammed through it and then just kept going.

04:48And I hope the woman is all right.

04:52And thankfully, that woman is doing okay tonight.

04:54Police tell us that the mall plans to replace that safety post as soon as it can.

05:00Well, yeah.

05:02I guess I better.

05:03So their senior blocker was taken out by an earlier accident, and that is what allowed

05:08her to get through the main entrance to the upper level of the mall.

05:11When your senior blocker is taken out, everything, all other jobs need to be canceled until the

05:19senior blocker is put back in place.

05:21Like, it's there for a reason, and it worked.

05:26Like, you can't put off, oh, we'll install that.

05:30One of the odds, another accident's going to happen right here.

05:34It is convenient, though, if you could just drive right up to the store.
