Is Drake Maye Primed For a Year Two Leap?

On Tuesday's edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys questioned whether or not Drake Maye is primed for a second year jump. Bertrand makes the case that the Patriots signal caller already looks vastly improved since the last time fans have seen Maye out on a football field.

01:39super bowl if you're making the big year two leap i would say what's his competition caleb williams

01:45in chicago the word out of chicago is not good not good on caleb williams so who is he competing with

01:51for best year two leap of quarterbacks is it caleb williams and bo nix is it michael penix

01:58who are we talking about for that year two leap those are the guys right like jj mccarthy obviously

02:12you yeah especially with uh the surroundings better offensive line another weapon on the

02:23outside and digs and josh mcdaniels it all makes sense yeah in a lot of ways i'm happy uh to think

02:31that the patriots ended up with that third pick and didn't have much of a decision at quarterback

02:38two years ago that that denver game you know flying home for christmas game you know they could

02:46have had a better pick in some ways i'm happy they didn't end up with the number one pick that year

02:51because you look back on that now they would have taken caleb williams if they had ended up with the

02:58number one pick like a lot of teams would have right and the fact is they didn't have a decision and

03:03because they didn't have a decision to make on quarterback they probably ended up with a much

03:08better player than what chicago got that's probably how this goes how about what jim miller told us

03:14yesterday that um out in denver sean payton didn't even have caleb williams on his board

03:20as far as quarterbacks that he wanted didn't even look at him had no interest in him had him off the

03:26board nope and he was right but i don't think it's all we've seen i don't think the patriots

03:44back to this sure remember when the patriots were floating the idea of trading that pick that third

03:50overall pick how disastrous would that have been had they moved on from that pick well based on the

03:55way the rest of the draft went an absolute disaster unmitigated disaster and how thankful we should

04:02be that a team didn't come along and make a better offer i mean their job because the pick out there

04:08you have to do that which i think in you know retroactively again this is going back a couple

04:13of years on this pick as we talk about that quarterback class how stupid did they look for

04:18even floating the idea of moving that pick and how little credit do they deserve for actually taking

04:23drake may one they didn't have to make a decision on him number one he was the third quarterback they

04:28had the third pick and number two they had even flirted with the idea of trading the pick

04:32so that tells you that there wasn't this strong belief in drake may being the guy that could lead

04:40their franchise which means i want to blame the patriots for getting the pick wrong even though they

04:45ended up with the right guy can i do that i just did i just did it why were you guys floating

04:51around floating the idea of moving that pick that's your job but if you felt great about drake may

04:57which they should have yep and i think we're at a point now where yes the what do you call it like

05:02the the juice or the the vibe or whatever it is out of trade your patriots training camp is real

05:07drake may's gotten better as a player what you're seeing in this camp he looks better than he did

05:11when he was on the field in games last year drake may is continuing to get better he is going to

05:16make a big year to leave and every time he gets better i'm going to say how silly were the patriots

05:21for thinking about moving that pick how silly was that that they were trying to take calls on that

05:25thing listening to the giants i believe it was who really wanted drake may like the fact that they

05:30picked up the phone they didn't know he was going to be this good they didn't feel this strongly about

05:35him and they didn't even make a decision on him this is my long way of saying ellie wolf is he still

05:41here today he's still running things yes and that's all and i'm looking forward to this because

05:46i think that pick this year is only going to look better and better and caleb williams in chicago is

05:53going to be a guy that we constantly compare him to along with jayden daniels that's only fair yeah

05:57but the first pick in that draft is going to look bad and the two guys that are come out are going to

06:03come out of that draft are going to be picks two and three it's going to be daniels and it's going to

06:07be this guy i am not a bo nicks guy not a huge believer in bo nicks i think he could be a starting

06:13level guy in the league i don't think he's a star sorry no i'm with you on that and i like michael

06:18pennix as well by the way don't know what he's going to be i think not as convinced on him i think

06:24nicks is like a bailey zappy i think he's that level a little bit better oh he's better than bailey

06:31zappy you can't you can't bailey zap bailey zappy is barely a player in the league

06:36is zappy even on a team this year was he in a camp somewhere yeah city he's still there still there
