On Thursday's edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys reacted to discussion surrounding Drake Maye, and his leadership being on full display after organizing off-season workouts a few weeks ago. Bertrand makes the point that organizing workouts is the standard for quarterbacks in the NFL, and that this is not any special occasion.

00:00It's day number two, Patriots training camp in Foxborough.
00:03He was talking about Drake May, talking about his leadership,
00:07talking about the fit with Josh McDaniels.
00:09A few days ago, Mike Rabel said that the offseason get-together
00:13for Drake May and the receivers was 95% on Drake May.
00:1995%. Not 100%. 95%.
00:22Heard Felger on this yesterday.
00:25He thought it was kind of odd that Mike Rabel was dishing out
00:29of percentage on that.
00:30And I hadn't really given it much thought, but I do kind of agree.
00:33That is odd, isn't it?
00:34Yeah.
00:35Why would he do that?
00:36Well, it makes you ask the question, who's the other five?
00:39Yeah.
00:41Is it another player or is this McDaniels?
00:43I think it's McDaniels.
00:44Yeah.
00:45I think it's clearly McDaniels because that was a Brady thing.
00:48It's a Brady thing.
00:49They did it in Montana, they did it in Florida, they did it in L.A.
00:52Yeah.
00:53And so, you know, you can look at it any way you want.
00:56But if it's the coach pushing the quarterback, which I don't think
01:00that's what it is.
01:00Do you know what I think it is?
01:01It's not the right thing.
01:03This is what guys in the league do, you know, when you're at this level.
01:07I actually think it's Rabel trying to give McDaniels a little bit of credit
01:10there without saying his name because I don't know what the rules are
01:13if you can actually give him credit.
01:14Because he can't be there.
01:15I think he's trying to give a tip of the cap to McDaniels.
01:17I think there's a weird dynamic between those two, by the way.
01:21I think it's weird.
01:22Not that it's a problem.
01:25I think it's odd that you've got Mike Rabel in his second head coaching job
01:28with an offensive coordinator that he's known for a long time.
01:35And as Teddy Bruschi told us, he would not be listening to because he used to
01:41pick up players at the airport.
01:42I think it was how Bruschi told us.
01:43Yeah, he's told of cards.
01:45Right, right.
01:45He kind of like chuckled about Josh McDaniels in our Super Bowl interview.
01:49Yeah, I was like, all right.
01:51But anyway, I just think it's kind of an odd dynamic that they're going to have
01:55to find a way to work through.
01:57Josh McDaniels has been a two-time head coach in the league
02:00and is a long-time coordinator.
02:02He's got a lot more experience than Mike Rabel,
02:05even though his head coaching years, I think,
02:08doesn't amount to the six that Rabel had in Tennessee.
02:11But his number of years coaching in the NFL at a high level
02:13does far exceed what Rabel's is.
02:17And I'm sure there's kind of a trust-building process going on there,
02:23and that might have been a part of it, him trying to give McDaniels his due.
02:27Like, hey, this guy is organizing things on the offensive side for us to be the best
02:32possible team.
02:32That's what I think it is because they're still in that honeymoon phase on an episode
02:38of Married at First Sight.
02:40Okay, like, they're an arranged marriage.
02:43They're together, my opinion, opinion, opinion,
02:46arranged marriage, and they're still finding their way forward.
02:51And they're on that honeymoon with all the other couples.
02:53You know, everyone's acting a little bit awkward, a little strange.
02:57They just got married to someone they don't know all that well.
03:00All of that stuff.
03:03So I think that's what it was.
03:05I think that was less about trying to take a dig at May,
03:08and it was more about just trying to give a tip of the cap to McDaniels
03:11because he probably had heavy influence in it,
03:14and he didn't want to go out there and say, oh, that was all Drake May.
03:16Yeah.
03:17When McDaniels would be like, come on, I mean, come on, guy.
03:19You know?
03:21The stride stretch is unusual.
03:23Normally when you get, when you have your on the line like you just did there,
03:28pre-practice, a little bit of one-on-one, some special team stuff,
03:30now you come together as a team, and everybody spreads out and stretch.
03:34They're moving the whole time.
03:36I haven't seen a team here in over 10 years.
03:38Get in line, and then we're going to just do a little flexibility and agility drills.
03:43Or you're going about 10, 15 yards, doing a side shuffle, just to get the blood going.
03:47Just give him another half a win.
03:49Is that what you just did over there?
03:49That's it.
03:50I said, you just give him another half win for that?
03:52No.
03:53I was trying to do my legs.
03:56No, I'm saying, what's that worth once things get going?
03:59Oh, it's coming.
04:00Nine and a half?
04:00He's going to be at the double digits by the end of the week.
04:02They got a good stretch routine.
04:05Half a win.
04:05No, it's just like, even the stretch routine moves.
04:08You're saying fluidity, movement, constant motion.
04:11Guys, you don't sit on a ground.
04:12No, sitting around.
04:13Drop that.
04:13Drop that.
04:14Sorry.
04:14Can't say that word.
04:15I said that bad word.
04:16That's okay.
04:17I wish we were a podcast sometimes.
04:19I wish the FCC would drop these silly rules.
04:21That wasn't a bad word.
04:22No, you should be able to say that one.
04:24Yeah.
04:24You know, not a lot of guys like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:26I can see if they told us you can't say the F word.
04:28Yeah.
04:28That one's out.
04:29Or the, you know, see you next Tuesday word.
04:31You know, the upper echelon of bad swear words.
04:34Oh, that one.
04:35Like, if, okay, fair.
04:38All the others fly.
04:40Yeah.
04:40You want to call someone an a-hole?
04:44You should be able to do it.
04:45Still moving.
04:46Still moving.
04:47Okay.
04:48Back to this off-season training thing, though.
04:51The off-season training.
04:53Now I lost what I was going to say about it.
04:56With the McDaniel stuff.
04:57I know.
04:58I don't remember now.
05:00I had another thought on it.
05:01Oh.
05:01And I forget.
05:02Ah, damn.
05:03I hate when that, you and your stretching.
05:05Yeah.
05:06The dynamic stretching.
05:07When I see things that's unusual, I speak up here.
05:10Can I say this?
05:12Are we giving Drake May too much credit, though, for the last two days?
05:17That was my take.
05:18That was the one from last night I wanted to say.
05:19This could be a story now.
05:22After this, like this week, no more of this.
05:25We're not going to give him credit in 2026 for getting together with his receivers in the off-season, right?
05:30No.
05:30It's notable only because it's the first time.
05:32Yes.
05:34Which is fine.
05:35He does deserve credit.
05:36Good for him.
05:36He's doing the right things.
05:38And he's getting pushed to do the right things by this coaching staff, which I love.
05:42Good.
05:42Push him.
05:43Tell him to get his ass in gear.
05:45Get throwing sessions together.
05:46And make it your standard operating procedure for the rest of your career.
05:50Right.
05:51But if you're the franchise quarterback that we think you are, that should be the expectation moving forward.
05:56Right.
05:56Agreed.
05:56Same thing as yesterday.
05:57This organization went out of their way to clear the runway for him to be that leader that we're talking about here, too.
06:02So that should be, again, kind of the expectation going into year two and moving forward.
06:09So, yes, we are giving him too much credit for this right now.
06:12It's okay.
06:13It's the first time.
06:14Next year, this shouldn't even be a mention.
06:17It doesn't matter.
06:18This is what you're supposed to do.
06:20That's the job.
06:21You want to be the franchise quarterback?
06:23You're going to do all the things you've got to do.
06:24Tommy Curran said last night, he goes, this is a guy who will be in line to make $60 million a year.
06:29We're going to throw a parade for this guy because he's doing off-season throwing programs?
06:33He goes, this is what's going to get you there, building trust with receivers, being a better team, winning football games because you did all those little things.
06:41We're not going to celebrate you for doing your job, which is what that becomes.
06:45You were going to say, what?
06:46I'm glad you brought that back up because that's another point I heard Tom talk about last night, too.
06:51It's okay.
06:51We will get to that point where we're going to be talking about, okay, what's the next contract for Drake?
06:5660, 65.
06:57They always go up from there.
07:00I don't want to sit there and have to break it down and feel like I'm talking about Trevor Lawrence, Chua, Kyler Murray.
07:09Right, that group of quarterbacks.
07:09Where it's like the gun to the head.
07:11Yeah.
07:11It's either you've got to give him the 65 or you've got to reset and start over.
07:16No one ever wants to start over.
07:18I want him to play his ass into that 60, 65.
07:21You want it to be an afterthought.
07:22Of course he's getting extended.
07:24Who cares?
07:24I want to feel like it's just a room.
07:25Right, not the, like, what else are we going to do.
07:27Yeah.
07:28Right.
07:28You want it to be like, oh, yeah, of course he'll get extended.
07:31It's just a matter of when they get it done.
07:32Right.
07:33That's what you want.
07:33Yes.
07:34Not to say where everybody's a bitch.
07:36I can't believe you're giving him 60 million.
07:37He's only a three-win quarterback.
07:39No.
07:40No, because I don't feel great about the direction that Trevor Lawrence is heading or Tua or Kyler Murray.
07:46Don't put him in that group.
07:48That's a good point.
07:49I want him to play his way out of that group.
07:50The nice thing, by the way, about him doing the throwing sessions at this point in time, how many guys were there?
07:57About nine.
07:59Was Brady thrown with that many guys at the end?
08:01No, no, no, no.
08:01And here's the big difference.
08:03Drake May is young.
08:04The kill they get to you.
08:05Drake May will oftentimes be the youngest guy in the group if he's throwing with veteran receivers.
08:10How old is Kyle Williams?
08:11Probably 23.
08:12Is Kyle Williams older or younger than Drake May?
08:15I meant to look that up last night when I was talking about this, and I thought, Drake May is the youngest guy.
08:21He's 22.
08:23And so he is, let's look at the birth dates.
08:27November 13, 2002 for Kyle Williams.
08:31Kyle Williams is two months older than Drake May.
08:35No, sorry, two months younger.
08:36My mistake.
08:37He's two months younger.
08:38Same age.
08:39They're two months apart.
08:41So what does that tell you?
08:43That tells you that he's the young guy in the group, and although he's a leader and he's becoming more vocal
08:49and he's operating with a lot more confidence, he brings everybody into the fold because he's not picky
08:56and he doesn't feel like he's earned the right to exclude players that he doesn't think can play.
09:04Right?
09:05He just wants to work with everybody and get as much work in as possible,
09:07and that's the nice thing of having a young quarterback again who's doing the right things
09:12because Brady at the end, Amendola Edelman can go to Montana.
09:17Right?
09:18Yeah.
09:19It's like, well, if you got six, maybe seven receivers on the team,
09:24maybe you should get six, seven, eight guys practicing with you.
09:28Get everybody a chance to practice and throw.
09:31So that is one of the positives of this.
09:33But yeah, you're right, McComb.
09:35Entirely too much credit.
09:36He gets it this year, but beyond this year, no go.
09:39This is now the standard.
09:42This is now the standard.
09:44This is now the standard.
09:45It's a standard.
09:45Let me see.
09:50Let's go.
