00:35Uh, Drake May got more reps than your typical backup

00:37Evan Washburn has details on exactly how much work he got

00:40Jacoby's the starter, he won the job in the off-season in training camp

00:45Drake May's the number two

00:47But during the week, he gets 30% of the first-team reps

00:50And for those that don't know

00:52A backup in a normal NFL situation

00:56If they get 5-10% of the first-team reps

00:59That would be a lot

01:01On top of that, when he's running the scout team

01:04He's not getting a heads-up of what he's going to face

01:07So, it's not a situation where he's there just to help out the first-team defense

01:12They want to use that as live game reps, if you will

01:16For Drake May to face what appears to be, after what we saw yesterday in Cincinnati

01:21A top-tier defense in New England

01:23So he's getting 30% of the reps

01:25And he said in that clip, you probably know this anyway

01:28When Brady was there, the backups were getting zero reps

01:31Because why would they?

01:3230% and he's not just running scout team reps

01:36He's going out there and getting live reps

01:37Where he doesn't know what the defense is running

01:39Which is typically what you do on the scout team

01:41Hey, this defense runs this, scout team, go run it, mimic it

01:44Typically, he knows what they're doing

01:46Or a backup quarterback would know that

01:48Or you're running their plays, you're running your plays

01:52So they're running his plays against a live defense

01:54And they're putting him to the test

01:55Now, he wouldn't commit to a timeline

01:57I still think if things go south the next few weeks

01:59Which is not what I'm forecasting, but if they do

02:01That Miami week is still in play, week 5

02:04It is

02:05But it sounds like they're giving him more reps than normal

02:08They're still not fully sold on Jacoby Brissett

02:10And it's a pretty aggressive plan for Drake May

02:12So if you are like that texter

02:14Hey, unlock the passing game, get May in there

02:16I still think that's right around the corner

02:20Assuming they hit a rough patch at any point

02:23Well, I kind of read it now as

02:25Maybe the win-loss record doesn't matter as much

02:27Maybe they could be a decent team

02:29And they still make the change

02:31You know who did that? The Dolphins

02:33We talked about this with Tua and Fitzpatrick

02:35The Floors kind of butchered that

02:37And then Fitzpatrick won a couple games later

02:39Went to Tua, then they kind of yo-yoed him

02:41Then there were some injuries

02:42And that really did become quite a bit of a mess

02:44But we don't know exactly what the plan is

02:46But they've always referenced this plan that they have for Drake May

02:48And maybe it was just, hey, we're going to get them ready

02:50We're going to get them ready during the season as well

02:52And if the rest of the team

02:54I think that's also an important piece

02:56If the offensive line isn't a disaster

02:58And at least through one week, it wasn't a disaster

03:00And Romandre Stevenson looks great

03:02If you can maybe get some of the other skill guys

03:04To play a little bit better

03:06You know you have a good defense

03:08So you're not just throwing them out there

03:10Into the worst situation in the league

03:12Which, before the year started, it was in the mix

03:14But if you compared their performance

03:17As an overall team, to Carolina

03:19The Giants, and some of the other things we saw on Sunday

03:21They're above them

03:23They're better than those teams

03:25So maybe they're like, hey, Jacoly Percet, you can play well

03:27Maybe in your scenario, maybe they're 3-2

03:29After 5 games

03:31They could still make the switch

03:33I thought, well, if they keep winning, that's going to kind of postpone it

03:35Now I'm not so sure

03:37If he's getting that many reps, I think they might have a plan

03:39Like, we think we can get him ready for week 6

03:41Because they don't have to worry about Percet

03:43Letting the world on fire

03:46We're all applauding Percet because he threw for 120 yards

03:48And didn't turn it over

03:50That is such an insanely low bar

03:52And he's lucky he didn't turn it over

03:54And he's not Mac Jones, so that is a big bonus

03:56But if he plays like that

03:58And they win these close games

04:00The Patriots know

04:02Gerrard Mayo, even though he's a defensive guy

04:04And Alex Van Pelt, even though he's a run guy

04:06He knows that they drafted this guy third overall

04:08You do need to be able to throw it

04:10Even if it's Drake Mahan hitting the ball off a lot

04:12You need that threat to pass

04:14So I would love to believe that

04:16I don't believe that

04:18If they're 3-2 and they're winning games

04:20They'll keep their hands at 10-2

04:22And they will leave Jacoby Percet in there

04:24That's what I think

04:26What if it's still $1.20 every game

04:28They'll keep Percet in there

04:30I think you could see the switch

04:32We're getting by

04:34We joked last week about that year

04:36Tim Tebow won all those games

04:38How are they doing this?

04:40They knew it wasn't sustainable

04:43Now you have the third overall pick

04:45He might be looking great in these practices

04:47We don't know

04:49But if he's getting 30%

04:51And he's looking like the better guy

04:53At some point, you owe it to the 3-2 team

04:55Or the 4-2 team

04:57To say, we're actually better than we thought

04:59And we might be able to improve

05:01And upgrade quarterback

05:03I think you have to do it

05:34But I think they can win these games

05:36If they don't, and I'm wrong

05:38And they're 1-3, then I think they'll make the switch

05:40I think it has a lot to do with the team's success

05:42So we disagree on that
